Title: sravana

User: Matus  Date: 2007-05-20 10:24:10

Dearest Swami Gaurangapada,

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances.

i have one question regarding sravana:

Could You please explain what does sravana really mean? Some devotees have the understanding, that our progress mainly depends on the fact, if we get enough opportunity to directly (personal association) hear from a sadhu with the proper attitude. Directly because two benefits: transmission of sabda brahman and the merciful glance of the sadhu...

Thank You very much

Yours sincerely,

Matus

Dear Swami Gaurangapada,

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances.

In connection to this question;

is reading Srila Prabhupada's books and those of the Acharyas' sravana as well?

Is hearing recorded lectures and videos of the Acharyas sravana too?

Yours truly,

Amiya Gauranga dasi.

The Acharyas are fully present not only in their Vapu (when they are physically present in their manifest pastimes) but also in their Vani (books, audios, videos etc.). So when we read their books or hear their audios or view the videos, they recognize that we are trying to connect with them directly just like when we associate with them directly when they are physically present. There is no difference whatsoever between the two. When we hear their Vani, they know it and they award us their merciful glance at that time also. It is a misconception to think that the merciful glance can only be awarded to us if we go in their physical personal presence. In fact Shrila Prabhupada always stressed that Vani is more powerful than Vapu meaning that a soul may receive their merciful glance even faster by dedicating oneself to their Vani (divine words and instructions) than those who may be associating with the Acharyas directly by Vapu (physical presence). Hari Naam Chintamani states that all Acharyas are our Shiksha Gurus (adya acharya jini, shiksha guru tini) since we can connect with them directly by associating with their Vani at any time and receive their direct merciful glance. If this was not the case, why would the Acharyas go through so much pains to compose their scriptures if we would not be able to receive their direct merciful glance by reading them or if there is some deficiency in that process? Ofcourse this does not substitute the mandatory need of shelter under a living Diksha Guru.

Yes, absolutely. There is no difference between hearing Shrila Prabhupada or Shrila Gurudeva directly by sitting in the assembly when he was physically present and hearing him now by reading or in audio or video form. There is some miconception among some that the hearing or viewing from CDs and DVDs is not as powerful as sitting personally and hearing. But there is no basis of this in the scriptures. The spiritual sound vibration remains fully intact when you sit and hear personally or whether you hear or view the video on the internet or from DVD. Let me explain.

If one argues that hearing personally there is no material medium like internet or DVD or paper, then I would say that even while hearing personally the sound is transmitted via a microphone which is again a material medium. Even if there is no microphone, the sound is transmitted via air which is again the external material energy. So how is it different? There is no difference. The truth is that the spiritual sound vibration emanating from an advanced devotee's mouth has  the power to fully spiritualize the air, microphone, internet, DVD, paper or any other medium by which it is distributed to others so the full spiritual potency remains intact whether you view a video on the internet or you are there personally.

Ofcourse there is one advantage as mentioned in Hari Naam Chintamani that there are divine spiritual vibrations emanating from the heart of a pure devotee so to associate with him personally by sitting close, one also receives them, without even knowing about it, and makes spiritual advancement. But if one does not have that advantage, one can surely make up for it fully without any loss and get the fullest advantage by hearing the same Katha with rapt attention from the video on the internet or on DVD or by reading it, if one is sincere, because Vani always remains more powerful than Vapu. As Seventh Goswami Shrila Sacchidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Vaishnavas always fully live in the divine sound of their words and instructions and one can fully associate with them by sincerely associating with their words and instructions even now. Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Guru Parampara! Pranams  and Blessings !

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.
