Title: Glories of Sadhu Sanga or
Devotee Association
User: Swami Gaurangapada Date: 2007-03-13 15:26:44
Q. I have seen several
pictures of ancient temples and shrines in the Holy Dhamas. On the altar stand
the Deities and below Them sometimes there are pictures of Krishna. I did not
see any guru-photos on any of these altars. Also, I read that in the tradition
of Vaishnavism food has always been offered directly to Bhagavan. So I wonder
if offering food to the spiritual master and putting picture of gurus on the
altar is a kind of new innovation? Also, these guru-pujas where devotees
worship a guru sitting on the vyasasan and distributing cookies, is that a
correct process? When we read the biographies of exalted maha-bhagavatas, we
see that the more advanced they were, the more they protested when someone
tried to worship or even serve them.
Answer by Swami
Gaurangapada:
mad-bhakta-pujabhyadhika
(Shrimad Bhagavatam 11.19.21):
"The worship of
my devotees is higher than even My own worship."
Thus is many cases the
pure devotees are even worshiped more than the Lord Himself because they are
most merciful and free distributors of pure love and the Lord's mercy.
The pure devotees may not
accept or desire the worship but it is our pre-eminent duty to do so. Even Lord
Gauranga Himself served and worshiped His own devotees.
There is a verse quoted
in the Hari Bhakti Vilasa that the Lord does not accept bhoga directly, He only
eats when the devotees actually put it in the mouth.
Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta
Prabhupada quotes:
Sri Ramanujacarya has
stated:

"The worship of
Vaisnavas is greater than the worship of the Supreme Lord. Insulting a Vaisnava
is more offensive than insulting Lord Visnu. The water that has washed the feet
of a devotee is more pure than the water that has washed the feet of
Gauranga-Krsna. There is no higher achievement than to worship a Vaisnava.
There is nothing more offensive than being envious of a Vaisnava, which results
in one's utter ruination. One should always converse with maha-bhagavata Vaisnavas,
and one should never see the lowest of mankind who criticizesVaisnavas. One
should never reside with a duplicitous person who is attached to sense
gratification and decorated with the signs of a Vaisnava."
Adi Purana:

" `Those who are

Shri Chaitanya

" `My dear Devi,
although the Vedas recommend worship of demigods, the worship of Lord Visnu is
topmost. However, above the worship of Lord Visnu is the rendering of
worshipful service to the Vaisnavas, who are devoted to Lord Visnu.'
SOME GLORIES OF
WORSHIPING PURE DEVOTEES FROM HARI BHAKTI VILASA:

One can attain the path
of liberation from material bondage only by rendering service to highly
advanced spiritual personalities. The personalities areimpersonalists and
devotees. Whether one wants to merge into the Lord' sexistence or wants to
associate with the Personality of Godhead, one shouldrender service to the
mahatmas. For those who are not interested in suchactivities, who associate
with people who are fond of women and sex, the pathto hell is wide open. The
mahatmas are equipoised. They do not see any difference between one living
entity and another. They are very peaceful andfully engaged in devotional
service. They are devoid of anger and they workfor the benefit of everyone.
They do not behave in any abominable way. Suchpeople are known as mahatmas.

(HARI BHAKTI VILASA 10/46
from VISNU PURANA Yamaraja instructs his
messengers)
Any person who does not
get disturbed by lusty desires and who is always
rigidly attached to the
lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, heis said to be a Visnu
devotee.
Srila Sanatana Gosvami
gives his Digdarsani-tika commentary on this verse,
saying anybody who is
really attached to the transcendental subjects of Krsna,he becomes very
purified and becomes free from all kinds of personal sense gratification, etc.
Any person who wants to hear the transcendental message ofthe Supreme Lord and
who wants to chant them with a loud voice and who feels this message is very
rarely achieved, one who is attached to the lotus feet of Lord Krsna and one
who wants his mind to be tied at His lotus feet, all of these personalities are
to be known as Visnu bhaktas or devotees of the Supreme Lord. The sign of a
clean devotee is that the devotee's mind is not disturbed. One who is engaged
in pure devotional service does not become disturbed in any condition. He sees
friends and enemies equally. He naturally develops a desire to not usurp
somebody else's property. Everything that he needs is provided by the Supreme
Lord, therefore it is said that one whose mind is not disturbed, he is said to be
a properly minded person. Thus, he is said to be a Visnu devotee. He does
everything. He does his own occupational duty without depending on others.
Whatever is possible, he depends on the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Unalloyed devotees, who
have no desire other than to serve the Lord, worship Him in full surrender and
always hear and chant about His activities, which are most wonderful and
auspicious. Thus they always merge in an ocean of transcendental bliss. Such
devotees never ask the Lord for any benediction. I, however, am in danger. Thus
I pray to that Supreme Personality of Godhead, Who is eternally existing, Who
is invisible, Who is the Lord of all great personalities, such as Brahma, and
Who is available only by transcendental bhakti-yoga. Being extremely subtle, he
is beyond the reach of my senses and transcendental to all external
realization. He is unlimited, He is the original cause, and He is completely
full in everything. I offer my obeisances unto Him.

For those who have
achieved the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of the pure devotees,
what is impossible to do, and what is impossible to give up?
Therefore, Yamaraja says
to his messengers:
TE

My dear servants, please
do not approach such devotees, for they have fully surrendered to the lotus
feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. They are equal to everyone, and
their narrations are sung by the demigods and inhabitants of Siddhaloka. Please
do not even go near them. They are always protected by the club of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, and therefore Lord Brahma, I, and even the time factor
are not competent to chastise them.

The Supreme Lord Visnu,
Who is praised by everyone, has created me for the benefit of the whole world
to discriminate the heavenly planets which are meant for meritorious persons,
and hellish planets which are meant to torture the sinful people. Therefore, I
control and manage those people who are against the lotus feet of Lord Hari. I
pay my humble obeisances at the lotus feet of Lord Hari.
As the moon which has a
rabbit mark on its chest cannot be defeated by
unlimited darkness,
similarly, any person who has developed pure devotion to Lord Sri Hari, even if
he is very dirty, he is still worshipable. In other
words, if an unalloyed
devotee accidentally engages himself in sinful
activities, he is not
considered a sinful person.

person who is actually grateful and will not worship the Personality of

place where pure devotees live, following the rules and

that place if one gets a

discussing material subjects like politics and sociology. In an assembly of
pure devotees, there is discussion only of the qualities, forms and pastimes of
the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is praised ad worshiped with full
attention. In the association of pure devotees, by constantly hearing such
topics respectfully, even a person who wants to merge into the existence of the
Absolute Truth abandons this idea and gradually becomes attached to the service
of Vasudeva.
