Title: Why to keep the beads covered?

User: Swami Gaurangapada Date: 2006-12-16 19:09:00

YAKSA RAKSASA BHUTANI SIDDHA VIDYADHARA GANAH

HARANTI PRASABHAM YASMAT TASMAD GUPTAM SAMACARET

Some people have told me the beads should be covered when chanting. Is this correct and if so what is the reasoning behind it?

Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:

(HARI BHAKTI VILASA 17/144 from YAJNAVALKYA SMRTI)

"If one chants japa while keeping his japa beads outside of his bead bag, then his japa is taken by semi-demigods, demons, ghosts (who don't have gross bodies), perfected living entities from Siddhaloka and Vidyadhara residents of the heavenly planets. Therefore one should not keep his beads outside of his bead bag."

Note: This is the ideal situation but there are no hard and fast rules for chanting as Lord Gauranga says. Inside or outside the bead bag, the main thing is to chant as much as possible. If one wants to chant for the benefit of the other souls mentioned above, then one can do loud kirtana or singing of the Holy Names of Nityananda, Gauranga and Hare Krishna.†† 07/01 14:55:13
