Title: Questions about Gaura-Gadadhara

User: Igor†††† Date: 2006-12-31 06:14:06

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna

Dear Gurudeva, here are several questions about Gaura-Gadadhara.

††

1. It may be confusing for neophyte devotee - Lord Gauranga is "radha-krishna nahe anya" and Gadadhara is described in Gaura-ganodesa-dipika "person who in Vraja was the daughter of Shri Vrsabhanu Raja, namely Shrimati Radharani, is now celebrated as Shri Gadadhara Pandita."

So, it is confusing, two times - Radha(Gadadhara), Radha-Krishna (Gauranga). How to properly understand that?

††

2.Some devotees stays that highest ideal is to unite Gaura with Gadadhara. They are saying that such worship is only for advanced devotees, not for neophyte, kanistha devotees and that worshiping of Gadadhara is in madhurya rasa. They are saying that worshiping of Gaura-Nitai is in sakhya rasa. How to understand that properly?

††

3.Others states that Shrilla Prabhupada recommended only worshiping of Gaura-Nitai Deities, and that Shrilla Prabhupada never organized worshiping of Gaura-Gadadhara in any of his temples, so that all his followers should follow that example.

††

Could you please, when you get some time, elaborate more about this, for neophyte devotee a little bit confusing topics.

Thank you very much.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

1. It may be confusing for neophyte devotee - Lord Gauranga is "radha-krishna nahe anya" and Gadadhara is described in Gaura-ganodesa-dipika "person who in Vraja was the daughter of Shri Vrsabhanu Raja, namely Shrimati Radharani, is now celebrated as Shri Gadadhara Pandita." So, it is confusing, two times - Radha(Gadadhara), Radha-Krishna (Gauranga). How to properly understand that?

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Nice question. There are different ways to understand this. I will explain two of them today:

(1) I will give you some examples first to show how the same personality can appear in two different forms in Lord Gauranga's pastimes.

In Gaura Gannodesha Dipika it is said:

75. "Lord Brahma, the master of the universe, who is considered one of the members of the Navavyuha and who is the original teacher of the Vedas and Tantras, appeared in Lord Chaitanya's pastimes as Shri Gopinatha Acarya."

Also in Shri Navadvipa Dhama Mahatmya it is said that Lord Brahma came as Shrila Haridasa Thakura and chanted the Name constantly because he did not want to commit the same mistaken of kidnapping the cowherd boys of Lord Krishna which he had done in Lord Krishna's pastimes.

Also it is described in GGD verse 93:

"Rcika Muni's son Brahma Mahatapah, and Prahlada Maharaja combined to appear as Haridasa Thakur in Lord Chaitanya's pastimes."

And it is described that Shrila Prahlada Maharaja became Shrila Vasudeva Datta in Lord Gauranga's pastimes. So Shrila Prahlada took two forms in Gaura Lila.

112. "The learned devotees know that Candrasekhara Acarya was an incarnation of the moon-god and Shriman Uddhava dasa was an empowered incarnation of the moon-god."

So from the three above examples, one can understand that the pure Associates of Lord Gauranga can expand and incarnate into many forms simultaneously like the Supreme Lord Gauranga Himself who simultaneously appeared as Lord Nityananda, Lord Advaita and Lord Virabhadra, all of Whom were non-different from Him. So what to speak of the Supreme Pleasure Potency Shrimati Radharani. She can combine with Lord Krishna in the Holy Form of Lord Gauranga and at the same appear independently as Shri Gadadhara Pandita to assist the Lord in His sankirtana pastimes in Navadvipa and Puri.

===============

(2) GGD 26. Lord Chaitanya accepted Shrimati Radharani's golden complexion and ecstatic love for Lord Krishna, both of which had never before been seen in this world. Lord Chaitanya was actually Lord Krishna, the son of Maharaja Nanda.

Shri Chaitanya Charitamrita: radha bhava dyuti suvalitam naumi krishna svarupam...

Lord Gauranga is basically Lord Krishna Himself (krishna svarupam) with the mood and golden complexion (radha bhava dyuti) of Shrimati Radhika. Because the mood and golden complexion of Shrimati Radha is absolutely non-different from Her, that is why Lord Gauranga is said to be the combination of Shri Shri Radha Krishna. So it can be understood that Shrimati Radha personally and directly appeared as Shri Gadadhara Pandita and with Her mood and complexion She combined with Her Lord Krishna and appeared as Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

===============

Since Lord Gauranga is unlimited there are also some other ways of understanding but I think the above two are enough for now.

3.Others states that Shrila Prabhupada recommended only worshiping of Gaura-Nitai Deities, and that Shrilla Prabhupada never organized worshiping of Gaura-Gadadhara in any of his temples, so that all his followers should follow that example.

Yes, that is right. Shri Shri Nityananda Gauranga Deities and worship should be established widely along with the daily chanting of Their Names and Pastimes along with Hari Naam and Krishna Lila. Just establishing Deities of Shri Shri Nitai Gaura without daily chanting, reading or kirtana of Nitai Gaura Naam and Lila will not be most pleasing to the Lord. Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara Deities should be established be advanced devotees for their own Bhajana especially in the Dhaam. We see that Seventh Goswami Shrila Sacchidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura and Shri Shrila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura established the Deities of Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara mainly in the Holy Abode of Navadvipa and Puri. Shri Shri Nitai Gaura are more merciful and accessible to the fallen conditioned souls and gives us qualification for the worship of Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara and Shri Shri Radha Krishna.

I will answer this question later as it requires a more elaborate answer which I have partly answered previously but the basic direct answer is that NO, Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara do not have a madhurya relationship with each other or with Their devotees who want to artificially imagine Them as conjugal lovers. They together remember and meditate on Their own pastimes as Shri Shri Radha Krishna through Sankirtana but never enact those pastimes in Gaura lila. To enact those pastimes They appear as Shri Shri Radha Krishna and not as Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara. Madhurya rasa can only be reached in relation with Shri Shri Radha Krishna. Dasya rasa or the mood of servant is the highest mellow in the worship of Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara or Shri Shri Nitai Gaura and it will grant us our mellow in the pastimes of Shri Shri Radha Krishna. It is wrong to say that Gaura Nitai worship is in sakhya bhava and Gaura Gadadhara worship is in madhurya bhava as both worship are in dasya bhava for us and Lord Nityananda who is in a sakhya (brother) relationship with Lord Gauranga can surely grant us madhurya bhava i.e. lover relationship in Shri Shri Radha Krishna's pastimes...hema nitai vine bhai radha krishna paite nai...I am sorry to know that nowadays the relationships and pastimes of Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara is being made so cheap and is being misunderstood totally. This has the potential to create dangerous doubts in the minds of the sadhakas and they may give up Gauranga bhajana or greatly displease the Lord due to such a concocted understanding.

That is why Shrila Vrindavana dasa Thakura has warned to stay miles away from this wrong and perverted philosophy of Gauranga Nagaris and not to even hear that word because they offensively imagine that Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara exhibit conjugal love for each other so we can also connect to Them with the same conjugal love.

That Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Guru Parampara! Pranams :pranams: and Blessings :bless:!

There are quite clear. They mean that without Lord Nityananda's merciful glance, no one can attain Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara or Shri Shri Radha Krishna...nitaira karuna habe, vraje radha krishna pabe...only by Lord Nityananda's mercy one will Vraja Dhaam and then Shri Shri Radha Krishna. Thankyou for posting such nice verses from Shri Chaitanya Bhagavata. Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Guru Parampara! Pranams :pranams: and Blessings :bless:!
