User: Igor†††† Date: 2006-07-20 07:22:20

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Yesterday I was in short visit to my friend Bojan who is vedic, Jyotish astrologer, disciple of astrologer Sanjay from Puri. I have never been interested in such things, but I got curious because he said that he belongs to line that is originate from Puri.

Can such Jyotish/Astrology advices or analysis be of any good for devotee? What should be our understanding of Jyotish?

Nityananda!Gauranga!Hare Krishna!

Jaya Shrila Vrindavana dasa Thakura

Jaya Shrila Prabhupada

Jaya Gurudeva

Gurudeva, please accept my humble obiesances at your lotus feet

dandavat pranams at lotus feet of all devotees,

I am a fool, and i hav no factual understanding of vedic astrology, some 3 years back I made an attempt to learn it.But my experiance is that learning Vedic but studying Astrology led me to worship Lord Krishna.

I had read that astrology is used to find out about past-lives n past karma and karmic reactions that influence the future,i.e find out about ones future. The planets, signs etc show the effect of past karma on ones life.Planets never trouble anyone and are never responsible for anyones life, they show the past karmic reactions and thier effects in ones life.

But all planet demiigods are actually pure devotes of Lord Krishna, this is what i read. Hence manytimes fortunate people in order to please demigods particularly Shanideva the (brother of Yamuna devi and Yamaraja) start worshiping Shrila Hanuman,Lord Ramachandra,Lord Krishna. Because in many many vedic astrology books,i had read it was said, that Shanideva is great devoteee of Lord Krishna, and whover is a devotee of Lord Krishna,is very dear to Shanideva and all planets.

While reading such statements from various astrologers and astrology books i had come to conclusion that main aim of evryone is to worship Lord Gauranga-Krishna,because evryone including all demi-gods are instructing evryone to worship the the Lord Gaurahari the master of all.

By mercy of Lord Nityananda this truth dawned to me tht the result/conclusion of studying astrology is to engage in devotional service to Lords Nitai Gauranga.

Chanting Nityananda Gauranga even once destroys karmic reactions of millions of birth.

This beautiful verse from Nityananda Gauranga Naam shows the greatest mercy of Supremely merciful Lord Nityananda

ek-bar dekhle cakse jal,

gaura bole nitai den sakala sambal

"When Lord Nityananda sees a tear welling in someone's eye upon chanting the Holy Name of Gauranga,He instantly gives His eternal support and shelter to that person;indeed He bestows all divine opulances upon him or her."

Please forgive me for any mistakes,

Aspiring to be humble servant of your lotus feet

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

I must say I agree with Bhushan Nityananda dasa's post.

I am also not an expert in this field either, but I have read a couple books on the topic and have done some readings on people I know and myself using the jyotish astrological methods. Jyotish astrology is extremely extremely accurate in predicting a person's activities, inclinations, bodily appearance, etc. You definitely can tell what kind of life a person will lead and how they act with even a basic understanding of Jyotish astrology. I also must say that Jyotish is much more accurate than western astrology because it deals more with one's internal tendencies and not so much with their external appearances because more importance is placed on the lagna and moon and not so much on the sun like in western "astrology".

But we must remember that these planetary influences only give full effect in our conditioned stage or when we are forgetful of our spiritual identity as being non different in quality from the Supreme Lord because the more we are engaged in the service of the Lord then the strength of the material elements are diminished in proportion. The more we identify with the body and mind and act on that platform then obviously the more we are affected by our past karma and accumulate more karma.

Another prevalent problem is the remedies that some astrologers give to counteract negative influences, like doing fire sacrifices and wearing certain gems to weaken or strengthen the influence of planets, or saying mantras to the deities of the planets. They are like the idiot gardener or the stupid pundit watering the leaves of the plant and not the root, and sticking food in the nose and ears, etc. Why not go to the source and try to please the controller of all these demigods, the Supreme Personality of Godhead? This way you will get a permanent solution and don't have to go through so much trouble. No more birth and death and no more speculation. Of course I'm sure there are many Vaishnava astrologers out there who aren't so foolish.

I remember reading a quote where Shrila Prabhupada forbade his disciple to study astrology, he said just be engaged in devotional service. He stated that Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta was a very very learned astrologer but when he took more seriously to devotional service he gave astrology up. So an understanding in astrology surely isn't necessary for the proper execution of devotional service and in many ways can impede pure devotional service if not used carefully, but it does seem like it would be a nice intellectual profession if done properly.

***These views expressed are only my opinion and are in no way indicative of the thoughts of Swami Gaurangapada, and as I said I am surely no expert on the subject***

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

:ty: dear Bhusan and JagganathaGauranga on very detail answers.

I was just curious about that practice. Astrology is also part of vedic system ( we can seeGargamuni in Bhagavatam, and also there is birth chart of Lord Gauranga).

It seems that it is quite accurate in determination of different planet aspect, but only shortcoming is that Astrology do not consider influence of most powerful planet - Goloka Vrindavana for persons who are always chanting Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna.

Thank you very much for answers.

If anyone wants to add something more about this topic please write.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Guru Parampara! Pranams! :pranams: and Blessings! :bless: According to Shrila Rupa Goswami Prabhupada in the Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu, First Wave, too much emphasis on astrology takes us away from the full dependance which we should feel for the Lord's mercy at every stage in our lives and spiritual practice. Always thinking about astrological calculations implies that we do not have full faith that whatever the Lord will do in our lives is for our benefit. When a devotee starts chanting, Lord Nityananda takes control of the life of that devotee according to the surrender of the devotee and orchestrates the purification of that devotee and the devotee is not fully under karma. So if a devotee dabbles too much into astrology, it means the devotee is not letting the Lord act in his or her life. In such a case, the Lord may then take away His direct protection and again the devotee may have to come under the karmic laws as per his or her prvious karma just like Lord Krishna started removing His little finger which was holding the Govardhan hill when the cowherd boys started trying to hold Govardhana with their sticks.

Shri Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada, the great Jyotish of all times and the ultimate expert in Surya Siddhanta and Shrimad Bhagavatam, gave up his practice of astrology after he became the Acharya of Gaudiya Math because he wanted to teach by his example that full dependance on the Lord's mercy at all times is the main principle of surrender or sharanagati to the Lord. All that said and done, one can sometimes refer to bonafide astrology (which is quite rarely found) for the ultimate goal to perform Bhakti and Naam Yoga better.
