Title: Health questions

User: Igor     Date: 2006-06-12 08:31:51

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Dear Swami Gaurangapada and devotees, please accept my most humble obeisances.

I have some general questions and some specifically related with my personal problem. Devotees are more merciful then like desire trees, so I am hoping that you can give me some advice. Sorry for taking your time and this time ask something that is not directly connected with Nitay-Gaura katha. Nityananda! Gauranga!

1. This body is net of ignorance and pain and due to our karma we may suffer different diseases and have different medical and bodily problems. Modern medicine has high achievements, but also has very heavy shortcomings. I personally know many devotees with different bodily problems – back pain, high blood pressure, headaches etc. Some devotees declare that we should not care about that – that is karma and we should accept it. Others say that we should do something in order to have health and strong body for service, that we should not neglect this body because it is given us to serve Lord, so we should maintain this body in well shape.  In ancient times, yogis maintain perfect health with different yoga practices, asana and pranayama, Surya namaskar etc. So, should devotee accept such or similar exercise in order to maintain his or her body healthy for chanting and serving Naam and devotees?

2. I have eyes disorder –keratoconus and I am using hard lenses for more then decade. That makes hard to me to see, read or use computer for longer periods of time. Recently doctors suggested eye purlin transplantation operation – keratoplastic to solve this problem. They said that this is progressive problem and that if I do not undergo this operation and transplantation I could become totally blind in future. How should devotee relate to such problem like transplantation of organs?

3. I do not know if you or devotees on forum have some knowledge in ayur-veda or hatha-astanga yoga. Maybe some practice like trataka or Surya namaskara should be beneficial for this problem?

Sorry for taking your time with such questions that are not directly related with Naam and Nitay-Gaura katha. Vancha kalpatarubhyas ca krpa sindhubya eva ca patitanam pavanebhyo vaisnavebhyo namo namah. Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

So, should devotee accept such or similar exercise in order to maintain his or her body healthy for chanting and serving Naam and devotees?

Sure. The four-handed Paramatma Lord Vishnu form is situated in our hearts near our soul so our body is a temple. Excessive pain to our body causes inconvenience to the Paramatma as it does to us (soul). So we should try to avoid it by taking all practical measures possible. Of course while doing this one should be careful that one does not come in excessive bodily consciousness as ultimately the bodily health is also temporary and lasts only till we die.

I have eyes disorder –keratoconus and I am using hard lenses for more then decade. That makes hard to me to see, read or use computer for longer periods of time.

I am very pained to hear that Igor. Thankyou for sharing it with us. We have to understand that actually we deserved much more suffering due to our past karma but we are getting just a sample of it due to the causeless mercy of Lord Nityananda.

How should devotee relate to such problem like transplantation of organs?

If one is going to engage in the devotional service of Lord Gauranga Krishna with the new translated organ, then there is no karma involved and it is very welcome and one should go ahead with it if it really going to work. I have seen cases where it becomes worse than what it was originally. So one should be very careful about that.

I do not know if you or devotees on the forum have some knowledge in ayur-veda or hatha-astanga yoga. Maybe some practice like trataka or Surya namaskara should be beneficial for this problem?

Trataka may not be good for weak eyes. Please check that. I have a very sharp acupuncture plastic plate on which I stand upon for 3-5 minutes daily while chanting the Holy Names and it keeps me aloof for all common day to day ailments. Shirshasana (standing upside down) is good for the eyes as it brings more blood to the eye nerves but again it should be done after checking up the requirements of one who can do it. Walking on a green grass lawn is very good for the eyes and so is taking beet root and other juices. It reduces the specs no. also. Putting very pure honey in the eyes totally cleanses the eyes and make it cool and so is sprinkling water on the eyes with cold water in the mouth. The heat of the eyes goes to the water in the mouth and the warm water can then be thrown out. Another very powerful exercise for the eyes is palming. Rub your palms till they are warm and then put the eyes softly in the palm cups. This measures will show effect gradually and not overnight. In a few weeks I will put online more simple household remedies for devotees to take care of their bodies in the service of the Holy Names and Lords Nityananda Gauranga. I hope this helps for now.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Dear Swami Gaurangapada, Thank you so much for your quick and elaborate answer. Pure devotees are more merciful then desire trees! Ohe vaishnava thakura doyara sagara! You are ocean of mercy!

Excessive pain to our body causes inconvenience to the Paramatma as it does to us (soul).

You said that wonderfully! And so many, many devotees do not have such understanding! Thank you for helping me to understand that. We should take care of every aspect of our life, not for our enjoyment, but to use it properly in Naam sankirtana. Shrilla Bhaktivinoda Thakura is singing manasa deho geho jo kichu more, my mind, my body everything I am surrendering unto You, O Krishna, Nanda Kisora.

we are getting just a sample of it due to the causeless mercy of Lord Nityananda.

Yes! It is only mercy of Nitay! My karma is surely much larger, gigantic, but Khoda Nitay, merciful Nitay allowed me to be here, to read, chant and even translate your words! I should probably be in hell but He saved me and put me in contact with you! He is most merciful! Jaya Nitay!

I have seen cases where it becomes worse than what it was originally. So one should be very careful about that.

Yes, you are right. That was one of reasons why I posted my question. Modern medicine is imperfect and in many cases cure becomes poison and huge problem.

Another very powerful exercise for the eyes is palming. Rub your palms till they are warm and then put the eyes softly in the palm cups.

Thank you for your kind advices. I did not know for this exercise, and I will do it daily. Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

In a few weeks I will put online more simple household remedies for devotees to take care of their bodies in the service of the Holy Names and Lords Nityananda Gauranga.

Modern world is in great need of remedies and you are distributing greatest medicine - Nityananda and Gauranga Naam! Therefore you are expert healer!

Beside that, modern world also should teach how to live simply and healthy in the service of Holy Name. Such simple but effective remedies will definitely help innumerous devotees in their lives and service to the Naam. Thank you very much.

I hope this helps for now.

Yes. Thank you. I am hoping that your health is all right, and that you do not have any medical problems so that you should fulfill this sublime divine desire of Bhaktivinoda to spread Nitay-Gaura Naam together with Hare Krishna all over this world. That will be greatest cure for all humanity. Thank you once again. Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakura is singing manasa deho geho jo kichu more, my mind, my body everything I am surrendering unto You, O Krishna, Nanda Kisora.

Yes, that is why we should take care of our bodies. Because it does not belong to us, it belongs to Lord Gauranga Krishna. He is proprietor of this body and we are only caretakers of this body on His behalf. So if the caretaker neglects the duty given to him or her by the proprietor than it is not good.

I am hoping that your health is all right, and that you do not have any medical problems so that you should fulfill this sublime divine desire of Bhaktivinoda to spread Nitay-Gaura Naam together with Hare Krishna all over this world. That will be greatest cure for all humanity.

I know of a yogi who was master of yogic asanas and in the peak of health and was going to give a lecture on "How to get Eternal Health" but he died in the plane accident on the way. So simply good health is not a guarantee to life. It is solely dependant on the supreme desire of Lord Nityananda Prabhu.
