Title: Disease and Name

User: Swami Gaurangapada Date: 2006-11-30 18:41:00

Lord Dhanvantari has said: Achyuta, Ananta,Govinda nama uccharana bheshajat nasyanti sakalah rogah satyam satyam vadamyaham. Thus if Gauranama and Harinama are the most powerful medicine why is our disease not getting destroyed even though we chant?

Question by Chandrika Gauranga dasi: Are the Acharyas subjected to illness and death?

Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:

No, they are not since their bodies are spiritual. This is confirmed in the Shrimad Bhagavatam by Lord Krishna Himself to Shrila Uddhava 11.17.27: na martya-buddhyasuyeta...The body of the Acharya is not material but same as the body of Lord (sat, chid and ananda) in quality though it is different in quantity from the body of the Lord which is infinite in quantity. So when the Acharyas appear old or ill, that is due to a curtain of the illusory energy Maya on our eyes which is there to ensure that only the sincere souls approach the Acharyas and to enable the atheists to reject them and get further bewildered by Maya which is what they desire.

††† Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:

It is because we do not have the full realized faith and devotion in the Holy Names of Nityananda, Gauranga and Hare Krishna. If we have 100% devotion to Nama then it will have 100% immediate effect and instantly destroy all our bodly diseases as a side-effect.††

The main result of Nama though is to award us with pure love for Lord Gauranga-Krishna. If we have 50% devotion to Nama, Nama will gradually help us 50%. Theoretical faith and devotion which we gain from reading and hearing from Guru and the Scriptures is very good but we also need realized faith and devotion in Nama which we gain by practicing the chanting of the Nama ourselves.

Ofcourse sometimes the Nama and the Nami Lord Gauranga-Krishna Himself may allow a disease to afflict a devotee for some time if the Lord feels it is necessary for the purification of the soul and for the soul's faster journey to the spiritual world. Even in such cases the Lord may significantly reduce the suffering experienced by the devotee. It is just like an Ayurvedic doctor prescribing bitter neem juice to a patient afflicted with an blood impurity problem to kill the germs in the body. The patient may find it very difficult to drink such a bitter juice daily but it is actually for the ultimately recovery of the patient and for curing the disease at the root. So the patient should not blame the doctor for the suffering of drinking the bitter juice. Similarly, bodily disease in the life of a devotee may be taken away by chanting or may not be depending on how the Lord wants to purify the soul. Nama Bhagavana always wants to ensure the soul's bright future in the spiritual world where there is no disease, old age, birth and death so we should totally surrender to the Holy Names of Nityananda, Gauranga and Hare Krishna while chanting and allow Them to handle our lives in whatever way They desire while being always thankful to Them.
