Title: Why to sit on an asana
User: Swami Gaurangapada Date: 2007-03-14 06:51:36
I heard that while chanting one must not sit & chant on the plain floor and must use an asana otherwise the benefit of the chanting can be taken away by the demigods. Is it true & is there any shastric reference for the same. Also while hearing class & honouring prasadam one must not sit on the plain floor but on any cloth/asana. Is it true & any particular reason for the above and also is there any shastric reference for the same.
Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:
It is basically because the hearer of Gauranga-Krishna's Holy Names or Katha becomes a receptacle and absorbed in the Name or Katha, thus the Name and Scripture manifests in his or her heart. So for honouring the recepient of the mercy of the Holy Name and the Shastra, the hearer should not sit on the ground but on an Asana. Because respecting the hearer of the Holy Name and Katha is as good as respecting the Holy Name and Katha Themselves. Same is for honouring the Lord's mahaprasadam.
