Title: Why not permit pastimes within marriage
User: Swami Gaurangapada Date: 2007-03-15 08:58:18
I read Shrimad Bhagavatam and saw Krishna most of the time busy enjoying his past times with his 16000 plus wives/queens and Gopies. This any man or woman would like to indulge in and enjoy, in this world as per their genetic settings and nature gifted flow of hormones. But this will be immediately termed as lust and material activity and Krishna抯 past times are all divine and permissible.
Even in marriage when husband and wife enjoy sex, it is termed as illicit and a serious offence if they are doing it when not making babies. Can even a single married man or woman stand up and say that he or she has not faltered. Krishna is to set example for us, so why he did not tell that those past times were for him only, not to be imitated and strictly forbidden for others. He should have clarified himself rather than others who read it and justify it.
Why few past times are not permitted with in the fold of marriage with one person only, where they can have sex without guilt when not planning to have kids? (This is not to hurt any one憇 feelings. I am sure this doubt will be there in many people抯 mind specially married couples.)
Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:
Yes, for Lord Krishna and the Queens and Gopies it is pure unadulterated spiritual love with no tinge of any material contamination or lust that is why it is called Lila or Pastimes or Prema pure love because Their divine bodies are spiritual, not material like us. And if we do it, it is full of material lust and passion and it called as Kama or Lust and Karma not Lila. The happiness of lust in this world is very flickering and momentary but the spiritual happiness of pure love in Lord Krishna pastimes is eternal and ever-increasing.
In the 10th Canto, Lord Krishna states that He should not be imitated. His pastimes are for hearing and relishing not imitating. In our lives we have to follow His instructions in the Bhagavad Gita not imitate what He has done.
If we can lift the Govadhana Hill (millions of tonnes weight) on one finger for even one second then we can dare to imitate His other activities. He performed these extraordinary activities to prove that He is God. Who can maintain 16,108 wives in the present world?
On the other hand since Lord Gauranga came as His own perfect devotee, His activities are exemplary from the external material frame too.
The whole point is to reduce the indulgence and waste of time in mundane sex life and use it to cultivate spiritual bliss and happiness. That is why there are restrictions within married life also.
