Dear Maharaj

please accept my humble obesiances! all glories to Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga!

Smartas consider Puroshottam month as Mala masa.

I was talking to one devotee recently who is fasting Puroshottam month very strictly but I was surprised to know when he said ,we should not visit Holy Dhams during this month.

Kindly let me know what is true  for Vaisnavas Maharaj.

Pranams again

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Guru Parampara!  Pranams and  Blessings! Purusottama month, or adhika masa (extra month) is also called "mala" masa (so-called dirty month) by the frustrated performers of karma-kanda (smartas) because they cannot get any material fruitive results from their worship during this month. Only works of devotion (Gauranga Krishna Bhakti) give magnified results in Purushottama month. So it is actually the purest of all months for the devotees. There is no scriptural proof to even remotely suggest that one should not go to the Dhaam in Purushottama month. It is erroneous to think like that. The Holy Dhaams of the Lord are always transcendental and never become contaminated by any mundane conception.

The spiritual benefits attained by residence in the Dhaam are magnified thousands of times in the Purushottama Month. Some say that Purushottama Month is three times dear to Lord Krishna than even Kartika, the month of Shrimati Radhika. Thus in fact, it is recommended that one should either physically or mentally reside in the Dhaam for the month of Purushottama and increase our chanting and hearing and eat only prasadam.  Other details are mentioned here.

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

The Glories of Sri Purusottama Month

Excerpts from an article by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura (Rays of the Harmonist Summer 2001)

Two Divisons of Sastra ?Smarta and

The Vedic arya-sastras are divided into two sections ?smarta (literature based on smrti-that which is remembered) and paramartha (transcendental literature based on sruti-that which is heard).According to one activities, a person attains two types of adhikara (eligibility)?karma-adikara (eligibility for pious actions leading to material gain or promotion to higher planets) and bhaktiadikara (eligibility for unalloyed loving service to the Lord). As long as one maintains his karmaadikara, he derives benefit from the path shown by the smarta sastras. When he enters bhakti-adikara, by transcending the arma-adhikara, then he develops a natural inclination for the paramarthika (that which relates to the supreme spiritual truth) path. Therefore depending on their eligibility and inclination, the living entities will either follow the smarta or paramarta sastras. By remaining steadfast in following their respective sastras, the living entities make progress in their level of consciousness.

Adhimasa (The additional month) By dividing the year into 12 months ?the smarta sastras have ascertained the auspicious, religious, activities for these 12 months. In order to keep the lunar and solar months in tally, one month has to be included every 12 months. The name of that month is adhimasa. Smartas have discarded this extra month, considering it abominable and giving it a name like malamasa (impure month) and so on. On the other hand, the paramartha sastras acclaim the adimasa as the most outstanding month for transcendental activities. Since life in this world is temporary, it is not proper to spend any part of one life meaninglessly. It is imperative for the jiva to remain continuously engaged in haribhajana at every moment. Thus, the adimasa, which comes every third year, may also become useful for haribhajana. This is indeed the deep meaning of the paramarthasastras. Paramartha sastra says e jiva! During this adhimasa why should you remain lazy in hari-bhajana? Srimad Golokanatha Himself has ascertained that this month is the best of all. It is superior even to the greatly pious months of Karttika, Magda and Vaisakha. In this month, you should perform arcane of Sri Sri Radha Krsna with special

rules, or moods, for bhajana. You will thereby attain all types of perfection.?

The Glories of Sri Purusottama Month

The History and Glories of Adhimasa and how

it received the name Purusottama

The glories of adhimasa are mentioned in Chapter 31 of the Naradiya Purana. Adhimasa considered the sovereignty of the 12 months and saw that he was being slighted. He went to Vaikuntha and related his dilemma to Sri Narayana. Out of compassion Vaikuntha-pati took Adhimasa with Him and appeared before Sri Krishna in Goloka. After hearing about the distress of malamasa (the impure month), Sri Krishna heart melted and He spoke thus: e Ramapati! Just as I am celebrated in this world by the name Purusottama (the topmost Person), similarly, this Adhimasa too will be renowned in the world by the name Purusottama. Now I offer all My qualities to this month. Becoming like Me, from today onwards, this Adhimasa is the monarch of all the other months, and is the most worshipable and most adored in the world. All other months are sakama (they will

grant worldly desires), but this month is niskama. Anyone who worships this month, either without any desires or with desires will have all their karmas (fruits, reactions) burnt and then they will achieve Me. In this adhimasa, those greatly foolish persons who neglect to perform auspicious activities, such as japa, giving in charity, visiting and bathing at holy places and who are envious of the devotees are deemed, wicked, unfortunate and living at the cost of others. Thus, they will not attain a scent of happiness. Conversely, those who are filled with bhakti will take advantage of this Purusottama month to perform arcane to Me. After enjoying worldly happiness such as wealth, sons and so on, they will eventually attain residence in Goloka.?

Activities in the month of Purusottama

Sri Krsna is the presiding deity of Purusottama and His worship is the obligatory activity of this month. During this month one should not uselessly discuss worldly literature or mundane poetry or worldly sense enjoyment. And one should not criticise others. Giving up miserliness, one should give in charity to sadhus. One should perform service to Purusottama with all of one endeavours. Such service to Purusottama is superior to all other types of sadhana and fulfils all variety of desires. In a previous age, Kaundilya Muni repeatedly chanted the mantra ovardhana-dharma vande By chanting this mantra with devotion during Sri Purusottama month, one will attain Sri Purusottama Himself. One should devote Purusottama month to constantly meditating upon nava-ghana dvibhuja muralidhara pitambara Sri Krsna with Sri Radha. Those who do this with devotion will have all their cherished desires fulfilled.

Observance of Purusottama Month

(Excerpts of a class given by Srila Bhaktivedanta

Narayana Gosvami Maharaja on July

17 2004 in Badger, California.)

This is Purusottama Month. Lord Sri Krsna is Purusottama, and therefore this month is actually Krsna month. Among all the incarnations, Sri Krsna Himself is Purusottama, the Supreme Person. So this month is also  supreme among all months, as is the month of Karttika. In India we usually observe this Purusottama Month in the presence of Sri Purusottama (Lord Jagannatha), in His own place, Niladri (Jagannatha Puri). Devotees spend one month there, observing certain rules and regulations and rising early in the morning at 4:00 AM. Those who want krsna-bhakti, and those who want to observe this Purusottama Month, maintain many rules from the beginning of the month. You can follow by always hearing hari-katha and by observing those regulations which you can easily maintain. At least try to wake up very early in the morning, put on tilaka, perform arati, tulasi parikrama and kirtana daily.  Without the mercy of Tulasi, Vrinda-devi, you cannot enter in the realm of pure bhakti or the realm of Radha- Krsna yugala-seva, neither can you enter Vrndavana Even if you are outwardly in Vrndavana. Therefore, perform parikrama to her form as Tulasi at least in this month. You should offer all bhoga to Sri-Sri Radha-Krsna and then honour maha-prasadam. You should not ake?maha-prasada, and you should not at?maha-prasada. You should try to serve it. You should not hant?harinama, but serve harinama. You should not ear?harikatha, but you should serve hari-katha with your ears. Never go to ee?the Deities. Instead you can think, 揑抦 going before the Deity so that He may see me.?You cannot see the Deities, but you can pray, h, please see me. Please give me Your mercy. I cannot see You. With these eyes I see You like a statue made of stone, gold, copper or brass.?Krsna is not like this. Therefore, try to follow the rules and regulations, so that this month will be successful.
