Title: Offences to the Holy Name

User: Neil LA Date: 2007-05-07 16:47:08

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

All Glories to Swami Gaurangapada!

All Glories to the Guru Parampara!

All Glories to the Vaisnavas!

How much does one have to worry about offences to the Holy Name when one chants the Holy Mantras of Nityananda and Gauranga as well as the Maha Mantra?

My understanding is that when one chants Nityananda and Gauranga as well as the Maha Mantra, all offences to the Holy Name are forgiven because Nityananda and Gauranga are so merciful.

On another place on the forum, someone quoted a verse from the Hari Nama Cintamani that says that inattention is the root of all offences to the Holy Name and that if one is inattentive, one will not recieve prema.

Now I know that I am a total beginner, but I have to admit that I am inattentive more often than not when I am chanting. I try to bring my mind back when it wanders away, but it really goes all over the place. I try to tell myself to do my best and don't worry about it. I tell myself that as long as I am actually vibrating the sound of the Mantras, that I will recieve benefit and that the vibration of the Holy Names are more powerful than me and as long as I don't stop chanting, I will eventually (over the long term, I'm sure) recieve prema.

I don't want to minimize the importance of trying to chant without offences, but I'm afraid that if I worry to much about it, that might also be an offence in itself.

Is my understanding correct?

Thank you

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Pranams  and Blessings !  Yes, the Holy Names of Nityananda and Gauranga are merciful and do not consider the offenses which are considered by Krishna Naam...aparadha nahi mane taarite nipuna. Simply hearing the sound vibration of the Holy Names is very beneficial to the soul and does lead to our spiritual progress.

Inattentive chanting arises basically due to a lack of meditation while chanting. So there is no mechanical formula or quick shortcut to stop inattentive chanting unless one starts meditating on the divine meanings of the Holy Names while chanting which in turn one can do only when one develops positive taste for the Holy Names. You don't have to worry too much while chanting. Just take a small precaution that whenever you find out that your mind has wandered away while chanting, please bring it back on the Holy Names. You should not let your mind wander even after you come to know about it while chanting. Then that will be a deliberate thing and thus unfavorable to Naam Prabhu. This small endeavor of bringing it back to the Holy Names while chanting is enough to gradually fix our mind on the Holy Names.

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

Thank you for your quick reply!

I will just keep chanting and bringing my mind back. I will trust that a positive taste for the Holy Names will gradually develop.

I will just keep chanting and be paitent. Patientce is difficult for me, I want everything to be perfect right from the start. I must keep reminding myself that I am a neophyte and that chanting is a lifetime endeavor.

Pranams to your lotus feet!
