Chapter 2: Bhagavan Alone Is the Supreme Truth
Nothing Cannot Create Everything
Commentary by His Holiness
BRS Swami Gaurangapada

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : I am singing from Chaitanya Chandramrita by Srila Prabhodananda , he is saying how the Lord has descended in this age as Sri Gaura Hari and that one should take advantage of this, that the jewels of love of God that are now available to all. Lord Gauranga has illuminated the ocean of love of God, by his names, his pastimes. And 1 can see clearly the jewels now that are these things and if one does not take advantage then one will remain the poorest of the poor. One must take advantage of this great opportunity, that we have been born in a time that he also came in, so please chant his names and chant his names regularly.

There has been a big flood in Mumbai, hundreds have been affected and we pray for them, but what about how we are drowning in the 8.4 million species of life. But Gauranga offers a flood of the love of God that we should drown in.

So today we will continue second chapter , the 9th question of Vaishnava Siddhanta Mala. We have been deeply discussing this question and today e will continue. We have been discussing how detrimental it is to bhakti yoga to think or claim oneself to be God. So Bhaktivinode Thakur has said about these 2 obstacles. jada buddhi- material consciousness and nirvishesha buddhi - impersonalistic consciousness. Bhaktivinoda Thakur is saying that becoming one with God is not at all happiness, the soul is deprived of its natural bliss of serving God. He says that the state of trying to become 1 with God is not a happy one, as the activities of that person become inpalatable even to the Lord himself. Our question to the impersonalists is that if they are really equal to God and that all the world is brahman, then why are they participating in material activities

Lord Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, ishvara parama Krishna.

If the whole material world is an ilusion then what is the need of opening hospitals or social work, and most of the impersonalists they get into social work as this is a way to make big money in Kali Yuga, but it is contradicting their own theory that everyone is God, as if that were so then why should they engage in such activities. If they are God why dont they make their followers God immediately. Why dont they make their followers God and then there would be no need to do social work as God can do everything. So they say they have become God, but they say they dont have the power to make others God, but if they were God they would have all power to do anything. So actually they are fake Gods as real God can do everything and is the controller of everything and can make unlimited forms equal to him and empowered by him.

One bogus man saying he was God, I asked him to show me his universal form, like Arjuna asked Krishna in the Bhagavd Gita, I asked him, where is your universal form. So he told me he wasnt in the mood that day to show that I asked when he would be in that mood and said i would go to him them, but he said he would not be in that mood for some years, so he was just cheating. If you ask someone to give proof they make excuses. He was wearing shoes, so I asked him to show me the symbols on his feet that the Lord has. So I asked him let us see, so he said, no he was feeling too cold to remove his shoes. So unfortunately because of the dull minded and dull spiritualness of people in kali yuga, people are not very intelligent, so all these fake Gods have a good chance to divert and cheat people in the world. People should understand that God is not cheap, he is the supreme controller of the whole creation.

So that man who was claiming to be God, I asked him what was his philosophy and he said, that you are God I am God, everyone is God, so I asked him why dont you take that watch you are wearing, why is it not in my hand, if we are all God, then it makes no difference which of us wears it. And he was shocked and so he handed me his watch. I cooly put the watch on my wrist and i walked away. And after i walked for 5 mins, he came after me saying swamiji please please return my watch as my wife will beat me up, she will ask me where is your watch? So I asked him what kind of God are you if you are afraid of your wife, God is fearless, so how can there be fear in you if you are God?

So I said I would give him his watch if admitted he was not God. God never begs from he caught hold of his ears and he said he was have defeated my philosphy I now realise that we are not God. So that is the situation, this concocted philosophy of the soul being God can be easily defeated. It is easy for the soul to claim to be God as he is already in illusion, but God is never overcome by illusion. Those who spend their life trying to concoct and understand these philosophies are committing spiritual suicide as they are not recognising that they are parts and parcels of the Lord, they are doomed as they want to believe they are equal to God and are committing a great disservice to the souls as this will elongate the time we have to spend in the material world . As we will stay here as long as we have this contamination of the mayavadi philosophy. If we have this contamination for this Mayavada philosophy then it will be very difficult for us to develop Love for Lord Gauranga Krishna.

For example when an ostrich is followed by a cheetar or a leopard, the ostrich may run for some time, and when the beast is ready to devour the ostrich, the ostrich tries to hide his head in the sand. Similarly these mayavadis say that their activities are for Gods enjoyment, and they will have to suffer life after life for doing sinful activity. They have to suffer the reaction for their activities life after life.

So we have seen so may mayavadis and impersonalists later become devotees when they understand that their path is wrong, but there is no example of a devotee becoming a mayavadi. Because why would one go from the path of bhakti to the dry path of speculative impersonalism

That would not happen. Like the great Sanat Kumaras, they were impersonalists, but when they associated with the Vishnudvaitas and when they smelt the Tulasi leaves on the feet of Lord Vishnu their hearts changed immediately. Lord Gauranga gave many exlanations to this verse from the Srimad Bhagavatam:

atmaramas ca munayo

nirgrantha apy urukrame

kurvanty ahaitukim bhaktim

ittham-bhuta-guno harih

sutah uvaca—Suta Gosvami said; atmaramah—those who take pleasure in atma (generally, spirit self); ca—also; munayah—sages; nirgranthah—freed from all bondage; api—in spite of; urukrame—unto the great adventurer; kurvanti—do; ahaitukim—unalloyed; bhaktim—devotional service; ittham-bhuta—such wonderful; gunah—qualities; harih—of the Lord.

All different varieties of atmaramas [those who take pleasure in atma, or spirit self], especially those established on the path of self-realization, though freed from all kinds of material bondage, desire to render unalloyed devotional service unto the Personality of Godhead. This means that the Lord possesses transcendental qualities and therefore can attract everyone, including liberated souls.

SB 1.7.10

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : Bhakti yoga is attractive even to the impersonalists.

hatha yogaists, mayavadis etc etc unalloyed bhakti attracts all. Bhakti is done due to the souls attraction to the transcendental qualities of Lord Gaura Hari.

So it is very easy to understand that compared to the devotee who is drinking from the sweet ocean of the nectar of the Holy Names of the Lord, why would he want to drink the salty water of the ocean of impersonalism and monistic philosphy. Why would a soul give up a wonderful thing and take a rubbish thing. A genuine soul will never fall for such a thing. A genuine devotee never becomes attracted to this mayavada philosophy.Infact he will try to deliver others from this crocodile philosophy, as when the soul claims to be God he is finished, he has no way,

Can anyone give me an example of some shape comingfrom a shapeless thing, or some form from a formless thing?

Candrika Gauranga dasi : only when a magician makes something appear, but its a trick

like mayavadi gurus do, they make things appear from nowhere, but it is a trick a slight of hand

this is what mayavadi gurus do to prove themselves...they make money etc appear into their hand....and people are fooled by them...the money was always there, just up their sleeve. i know a famous mayavadi guru who does that and gains so many followers like that.

Bhushan : In fact it is scientifically not possible.

Daniel : photons can be described trough the partical theory and the wave theory...

Bhushan : According to Einstien. Light is described using quantum theory.

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : there is ALWAYS a source behind every form, the source is the form, in every scientific theory. Can nothing create something? Non moving thing s cannot generate motion and formless things cannot generate form. They say that you have to become nothing in order to become everything..haha...they say merge into everything and then you will become universal consciousness, but it is is simply word jugglery, they know nothing of spiritual philosphy. But how can the soul ever become nothing, how can you negate your own existence, it is not possible, even if you can do it theoretically and philosophically, still one cannot do it actually.

By trying to become God, by trying to becoming nothing and everything, they put themselves into degradation and obscurity.

Thats why Prabhupada tried so hard to remove that philosophy that one needs to become nothing to become everything. The sunyavada philosophy. Actually their attempt to become nothing is fullfilled. One who tries to become God becomes nothing. He has to take birth in animal species. Like an example of a glove that one wears in the cold season, when one puts a glove on, the glove takes on the shape of the hand. Similarly if our soul has 1 face, 2 hands, 2 legs, 2 arms, 1 nose etc, our body has a form and our soul has a form. The subtle and gross body are coverings of the soul. So the soul has to have a form with these attributes. As the gross coverings are fitting the soul like the glove fits the hand

The soul has a form and God has a form, nothing is formless. The soul has a form that is conducive to serve the Lord and the Lord has a form to eternally accept service from the soul. But the impersonalists see that everything in the material world is temporary, they think that ALL forms are illusion and temporary as they have no idea of the spiritual form, the spiritual variety, the spiritual nature. So in that way, one has to understand this point. There is spiritual variety which the impersonalists are unable to understand. They say everything is one!! But then why are there so many mountains, buildings etc etc, and they say it is an illusion. There is variety, spiritual variety that these impersonalists cannot understand.

So I ask them, my dear sir when you see your own reflection in the mirror, then it means that the real person is their, even if the reflection is temporary only while he is standing there, it means that there must be a person there in the first place otherwise there would be no reflection. The reflection in the mirror actually proves the existence of the actual person whose reflection we are seeing. Similarly this material world we are seeing it is direct proof of the variety and the shape and forms of the spiritual world. If the spiritual world was not there, if there were no spiritual planets there would be no material planets, as the material world is a reflection of the spiritual world as confirmed in the Bhagavd Gita.

urdhva-mulam adhah-sakham

asvattham prahur avyayam

chandamsi yasya parnani

yas tam veda sa veda-vit

sri-bhagavan uvaca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; urdhva-mulam—with roots above; adhah—downwards; sakham—branches; asvattham—a banyan tree; prahuh—is said; avyayam—eternal; chandamsi—the Vedic hymns; yasya—of which; parnani—the leaves; yah—anyone who; tam—that; veda—knows; sah—he; veda-vit—the knower of the Vedas.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: It is said that there is an imperishable banyan tree that has its roots upward and its branches down and whose leaves are the Vedic hymns. One who knows this tree is the knower of the Vedas.

Bg 15.1

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : So the Lord confirms this in the Gita, that after going to the spiritual world that the soul will never again return to the material world, so the spiritual world cannot be negated by the insignificant impersonal theories, they cannot stop the devotees from entering into the spiritual world.

So these branches of the tree are down and the roots are upwards in the reflection. Similarly if one imitates the highest things from the spiritual world, they will be the lowest things, like love in the spiritual world, love to the Lord, but if it is applied in the material world, without the Lord involved, then it becomes lust, the lowest thing here.

So these people who are saying that everything is false, that we are all God, actually they are saying that everything is false except their nonsensical theories. If you try to defeat their theories they say words cannot describe God. They say their theories in words, but when one tries to explain to them the absurdity of their theories. They can speculate as much as they like, but they can never conclude that their voidless formless God is the only reality

Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu describes in Chaitanya Charitamrita 1.69, he warns us, to be very careful of hearing this kind of philosphy.

jivera nistara lagi’ sutra kaila vyasa

mayavadi-bhashya sunile haya sarva-nasa

“Srila Vyasadeva presented the Vedanta philosophy for the deliverance of conditioned souls, but if one hears the commentary of impersonal Mayavada philosophy, everything is destroyed.

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu is warning us, sarva-nasa means the opportunity of the soul to go to the spiritual world is lost forever. If one tries to become 1 with God, because just like you will not keep in your house those who want to throw u out and usurp you, so is the Lord. He will not keep someone in his house someone who is his competitor, someone who is not humble or wont serve him, but try to become him.Sometimes the impersonalist people they pose as if they are doing devotional service, they even sometimes do kirtan, but their chanting is like firing blanks from a pistol, their chanting is detrimental.

So it is like one is trying to act as a devotee, but inside they want to become God, they throw off God from his position, they want everyone to serve them and not Gauranga Krishna

That is their mentality.

avaisnava mukhodgirnam putam harikathamritam

sravanam naive kartavyam sarpocchishtam yatha payah

Just as milk touched by the lips of a serpent has a poisonous effect, hari-katha, when heard from the lips of non-devotees, is poisonous. Both those who speak it and those who hear it will suffer from the effects of poison.

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : Non devotees are of many kinds, the worst being those who want to be God, so even if Harikatha comes from their lips, it is like poison, it is like milk that is touched by poison, all the milk will become poisionous to drink. So when the speaker is an impersonalist mayavadi, then hearing from them will have a detrimental effect

This is a very important philosophy to understand so that we do not get lost in our spiritual quests , so we know what is ignorance and how to defeat this ignorance

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Hare Hare

hiyara majhare gauranga rakhiye , virale vasiya rabo

manera sadhete se rupa candere , nayane nayane thobo

keeping Gauranga inside my heart, I will sit alone and fix my mind on His enchanting moon like form while chanting His Holy Name. I will gaze in his eyes and become absorbed in His beauty.

Questions and Answers

Daniel : I've read in Harinama Cintamani that those materialists who chant for material benefit will eventually walk on the correct path to Godhead, if not sooner then later...

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : Materialists have a very good, a better chance to become devotees, as by chanting they will get proper association and sadhu sanga. But Harinama Cintamani says that mayavadis only get fruit in the form of liberation into merging into the brahmajoti. So in that way as they harbour a desire to become 1 with God, they are punished by going into the impersonal brahmajoti where there is no reciprocation with the Lord, where there is no love.

Mayavadis are unfortunate, tomorrow we will see how the materialists can be benefitted but how the mayavadis are doomed. Bhaktivinoda Thakur has written a very beautiful song about this that explains nicely. Tomorrow we will discuss. So now we will conclude until the same time tomorrow

Never forget to Always chant Nityananda; Gauranga; and Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare and become eternally happy by attaining the spiritual world!

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Shrila Prabhupada, Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta, Shrila Bhaktivinoda, Shri Shri Nitai-Gaura Bhakta Vrinda and Shri Shri Radha Krishna Bhakta Vrinda! Jaya Jagannatha! Pranams and Blessings!
