Chapter 2: Bhagavan Alone Is the Supreme Truth
All Paths Do Not Lead to God
Commentary by His Holiness

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : Lord Gauranga says that if one becomes like a honey bee drinking the nectar from the Lords lotus feet, then such a person will attain Radha Krishna without performing any efforts or rituals. One simply has to be a honey bee drinking the nectar of the Holy Names Nityananda Gauranga

So we continue the 2nd chapter and the 9th question.

Q. What is impersonal consciousness?

A. First, the principle in the material world which separates all things is called visesa (distinction based upon material quality). By merely renouncing material thinking, one only gives up the conception of material distinction, and thereby one's consciousness falls into the realm of nirvisesa (non-distinction). In this condition, one is unable to perceive the differences between material objects, since the self is situated in nirvana or merging with the impersonal abode of Brahman. This state is not a happy one at all; being bereft of the natural bliss of the eternally conscious soul, the prema or ecstatic love for the Lord remains concealed. The eternal pastimes of Sri Krsna are certainly beyond matter; indeed, they are endowed with cin-maya-visesa, or divinely conscious distinction.

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : This is about nirvishesha. So we have seen how big an obstacle this is in the path of bhakti yoga trying to become 1 with God. It is a very interesting and deep topic so we will continue with it today.

So these people who are intoxicated with the desire to become God do not achieve any significant spiritual advancement, they degrade themselves more than the gross materialists. eg...if u peel layer after layer of an onion, ultimately there is nothing left except air and similarly these people who want to become God they become void.

But they do not know that in the spiritual mathematics of he Lord the equations are a little different, The Lord is not like an onion in this way

infitnity - infinity = infinity

1-1 = 1

In spiritual mathematics infinite - infinity = infinity, 1-1=1

Even though unlimited expansions and creations are coming from the Lord, it is inconceivable to our puny brains, it is beyond our imagination to comprehend the entire creation. By sending out a space shuttle we try to understand planets near to us, but the planets in Bumandala are very difficult to access. So it is very difficult to even find about a bit of this universe, so what to speak of the multifarious creations that are coming out from the lord. Still the Lord remains complete and full.

om purnam adah purnam idam

purnat purnam udacyate

purnasya purnam adaya

purnam evavasishyate

The Personality of Godhead is perfect and complete, and because He is completely perfect, all emanations from Him, such as this phenomenal world, are perfectly equipped as complete wholes. Whatever is produced of the Complete Whole is also complete in itself. And because He is the complete whole, even though so many complete units emanate from Him, He remains the complete balance.

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : He never becomes exhausted , he can have infinite emanations but still he remains perfect. The personality of godhead is completely perfect and so all the worlds made by him are also complete in themselves. So the supreme personality of godhead is not like an onion as people compare. It is not so easy to understand the Lord by just comparing with the onion.

They say that at the time of death ultimately everyone will get liberation as they say that the world is illusion, so ultimately at the time of death they will get freedom the illusion, irrespective of a pious or sinful life, they say that all will get liberation and join a stream of consciousness that leads to nothing.This is another false argument of these people. If that case was true then there would be no reincarnation.

yanti deva-vrata devan

pitriin yanti pitri-vratah

bhutani yanti bhutejya

yanti mad-yajino ’pi mam


yanti—go; deva-vratah—worshipers of demigods; devan—to the demigods; pitriin—to the ancestors; yanti—go; pitri-vratah—worshipers of ancestors; bhutani—to the ghosts and spirits; yanti—go; bhuta-ijyah—worshipers of ghosts and spirits; yanti—go; mat—My; yajinah—devotees; api—but; mam—unto Me.


Those who worship the demigods will take birth among the demigods; those who worship the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship ghosts and spirits will take birth among such beings; and those who worship Me will live with Me.

9.25 Bhagavad Gita

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : They think simply you die and become 1 with God, but if that were the case there would be no reincarnation. They dont believe in reincarnation, but that is rejected by Krishna in 9.25 of Bhagavad Gita, and 1 should take the answers of the lord himself

So we have to accept the words of Krishna that everyone doesnt get liberation at the time of death, but one gets the destination that one aspires for. He does not know that due to his past misdeeds he has already received a body which, although temporary, is the cause of his misery.

So because of our past deeds we achieve a body now which is temporary and a cause of misery and through our activities now we can achieve another body in our next lives. Not everyone achieves the same destination at the time of death

urdhvam gacchanti sattva-stha

madhye tishthanti rajasah


adho gacchanti tamasah


urdhvam—upwards; gacchanti—go; sattva-sthah—those situated in the mode of goodness; madhye—in the middle; tishthanti—dwell; rajasah—those situated in the mode of passion; jaghanya—of abominable; guna—quality; vritti-sthah—whose occupation; adhah—down; gacchanti—go; tamasah—persons in the mode of ignorance.


Those situated in the mode of goodness gradually go upward to the higher planets; those in the mode of passion live on the earthly planets; and those in the abominable mode of ignorance go down to the hellish worlds.

Gita 14.18

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : So this theory is falsified, whatever one acts like, whatever one achieves one will become 1 with God, this is false, just ike of one takes a flight from New York to London, does that person end up in germany? No, he will arrive in London. So whatever one performs one will receive a respective destination

ye yatha mam prapadyante

tams tathaiva bhajamy aham

mama vartmanuvartante

manushyah partha sarvasah


ye—all who; yatha—as; mam—unto Me; prapadyante—surrender; tan—them; tatha—so; eva—certainly; bhajami—reward; aham—I; mama—My; vartma—path; anuvartante—follow; manushyah—all men; partha—O son of Pritha; sarvasah—in all respects.


As all surrender unto Me, I reward them accordingly. Everyone follows My path in all respects, O son of Pritha.

Bhagavad Gita 4.11

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : So it is not that everyone will get the same destination after death. If one has not strived for liberation then why will the Lord give liberation. But if one is a devotee and asks the Lord for that then the Lord will give that. Lord Krishna again confirms this in

Those in the mode of goodness go to heavenly planets,those who are in the mode of passion are reborn on earth,and those under the mode of ignorance go to hellish planets.

Krishna says “As all surender into me I reward them accordingly.”

So as all surrender unto the Lord he rewards them accordingly, if someone does not ask him something he does not reward them, so those who are in the mode of ignorance he will let them go to hellish planets where they can enjoy that, passion to passionate places, and even the mode of goodness, he is sent to only the heavenly planets from which one again falls down. So that is why the intelligent person is not bewildered by the monistic people who say that after death everyone merges into 1, it is just word jugglery and they do not accept the scientific knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita As It Is.

So that si one argument, the third argument is that just as all the spokes of the wheel lead to the middle of the wheel, so they say that all paths lead too the same, that all lead to the ultimate reality of becoming God. We have already defeated this argument that all paths dont lead to the Lord

Those who worship the demigods will take birth among the demigods; those who worship the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship ghosts and spirits will take birth among such beings; and those who worship Me will live with Me, Krishna says in the Gita.

So all paths do not lead to God, God Himself says that in the Gita. Only the path of bhakti yoga is pleasing to he Lord, that path actually only leads to God. All other paths are leading to their respective destinations

apareyam itas tv anyam

prakritim viddhi me param

jiva-bhutam maha-baho

yayedam dharyate jagat


apara—inferior; iyam—this; itah—besides this; tu—but; anyam—another; prakritim—energy; viddhi—just try to understand; me—My; param—superior; jiva-bhutam—comprising the living entities; maha-baho—O mighty-armed one; yaya—by whom; idam—this; dharyate—is utilized or exploited; jagat—the material world.


Besides these, O mighty-armed Arjuna, there is another, superior energy of Mine, which comprises the living entities who are exploiting the resources of this material, inferior nature.

Bhagavad Gita 7.5

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : So the next argument is that..ok then...what about when we look in the mirror we see our reflections, but behind the mirror is nothing, so to realise God, you have to realise u r nothing and then u will be free to enjoy like God. But unfortunately these people dont know that the soul is neither nothing nor everything, the soul is an eternal soul. We are not nothing we are the soul, we are eternally a fragmental part of the Lord, we are true, the material world may be temporary but the soul is not and the nirvishesha buddhis confuse the soul with the material creation. They say that as the material world is temporary then we must also be temporary, they dont understand that the soul is a spiritual energy not a material energy.

All arguments can be defeated by Srila Prabhupadas Bhagavad Gita. In BG 7.5 Lord Krishna says

That apara shakti..the material energy of the Lord. Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and false ego—all together these eight constitute My separated material energies. Dead matter...the Lord explains in the previous verse 7.4 that the 7 elements constitute his separate material energies.

But the lord clearly says that the soul is different. Beyond this material nature , there is the soul, that the material energy is manipulated by the superior energy. The nirvisheshas think that because thye believe the matter is illusion that we are also illusion. The analogies they use that one becomes nothing or everything are incorrect. The soul will not change, the constitutional position of the soul will not change.

In the conditioned stae the soul is serving the material energy of maya, but in the realised stae he is serving the spiritual energy. That 1 supreme controller is the supreme controller for all souls eternally.

Their very favourite argument is that ultimately they want to become God because they want to become the enjoyers of all they see and all they possess, they dont want to bow down to the lord, that is why they use the titles of god in front of their names. They say that they are God and that their can be no conflict of interest because they are God, ultimately all energies are gods energies so that when they become god all energies will become their energies, this is what they say. They feel no need to chant his namesor hear his pastimes. All sense of devotion and bhakti is vapourised by hearing his impersonalistic philosophy. They say that by this mediatation they will become God, they say they can make you one with God, make you God, but if they are already God then how can they make anyone else God. So if they are God then why are they suffering and going to the drs.

Why would Gods need hospitals, why cant they produce money and gold, why do they have to resort to cheap gimmicks if they are God. God never suffers, Lord Gauranga never suffered, he nevered suffered, even at death he disappeared into the form of Lord Gopinath, but can we avoid the pain of death? If you cannot avoid the pain of death don't claim to be Gauranga Krishna,don't claim to be God.

They say that life is meant for enjoyment, that people should do as they please and just enjoy, actually the tendency to become God is the biggest sense gratification, as it puffs up the ego so much that one hardly even cares about the supreme Lord and devotional service.

The answer to theoir question when they ask why are devotees performing austerities and chanting, why dont they just enjoy like God? That argument , even in this world there is the saying no pain wthout gain, without any discipline noone can even become a disciple, people become like animals, when they want to eat they eat, they want sex, they have it, they want to pass urine and stool on the road then they pass, there is no discipline. If people are God then why do they have to have a job where they have a boss? They are under restrictions and iwthout discilines one cannot progress in life either materially or spiritually, neither way.

Why are they so deluded? Because they want to be deluded.It is like a sleeping man who is pretending to sleep A person who is pretending to sleep can never be woken up, even if u pull him push him and kick him, he will refuse to be awoken, they want to become deluded, do their own deluded things, making all their disciples into God, telling everyone that they will become gods.

who can never be woken up even if you kick him, jostle him,he wont wake up.They want to pretend as they want to continue their dirty things, telling everyone to that they are God.

Shrila Prabhupada' opinion is that if they call themselves GOD then they are DOG. It is ironical that GOD is opposite to DOG

So in Kali Yuga such preaching is very rewarding, as everyone wants to become God, so if one preaches these things. Anyone can have an opinion but that does not make it a fact. I can think i am Alexandra the great, but i am an insgnificant man in the terms of this world. One may call himself Alexander the Great,but does he become Alexander the Great?

If one goes to a mental hospital someone may use the logic that i am amercian and george washington was american, so 1=2 so 2=3...i am american and george washington was american and this is the logic they apply and the real truth is that the soul is sac cid and nanada, truth knwoledge and bless, and the lord is also sac cid and ananada. So they see this and say that and say they must be God, they dont see the qualitative differences. 1 american maybe as american as george washington, but GW had a greater quantity of the quality of power

So simply applying that logic doesnt work and so one has to understand the quantative difference. That has been taught, this sublime philosophy by Lord Gauranga Krishna. If he had not come we would also have been bewildered by the nonsensical theories so we have to thank him for coming in Kali Yuga.

Logically it is not right for a soul to claim to be God, just like a drop of water cant claim to be an ocean.

To end todays lesson i will quote a beautiful song from our great acharya Vasu Ghosh.

yadi gaura na hoito, tabe ki hoito,

kemone dharitam de

radhar mahima, prema-rasa-sima,

jagate janato ke

1) If Lord Gaura had not appeared in this age of Kali, then what would have become of us? How could we have tolerated living? Who in this universe would have ever learned about the topmost limits of loving mellows that comprise the glory of Sri Radha?

gao gao punah, gauranger guna,

sarala koriya mana

e bhava-sagare, emona doyal,

na dekhiye eka-jana

3) Oh, please sing again and again of the glorious qualities of Lord Gauranga! Just try to keep your heart simple. Not even one person within this ocean of nescience has ever seen such a magnanimous personality as He.


(ami) gauranga boliya, na genu galiya,

kemone dhorinu de

vasur hiya, pashana diya,

kemone gadiyache

4) Even though I chant the holy name of Lord Gauranga, somehow I still have not melted in ecstasy—how then have I maintained the burden of this body? How has the Creator fashioned this body with a stone in place of Vasu Ghosh’s heart?

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : The Most merciful name in Kali Yuga is the most merciful name of Gauranga and no offenses are considered, so why are our hearts not melting in the love of his name. So this intensity should be the intensity of our love for the Lords name and if we are not able to chant the name of the Lord with love, devotion and feeling, then what is the point of our existence?

Prayers to all in the world who are suffering, great rains have hit Mumbai in India and many there are suffering, in London many bombs are going off, the Tsunamis in Asia, there are many suffering right now and my prayers go out to them all.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Shrila Prabhupada, Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta, Shrila Bhaktivinoda, Shri Shri Nitai-Gaura Bhakta Vrinda and Shri Shri Radha Krishna Bhakta Vrinda! Jaya Jagannatha! Pranams and Blessings!

Pankaja dasa : Their argument is that they were god previously and now are playing out a lila, why are they so deluded?

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : But it is not like the lila of the Lord as it is very painful. Birth Death disease and old age is not lila it is ver painful.It is dosha and not lila. It is not under their control, lila means it is something we choose to do? Do they choose to become old and die. When they have an aching tooth that is not a lila. Lila means pastimes which are under our control. Have thay chosen to die,chosen to take birth, chosen to suffer. In pastimes their is only bliss no pain

Why are they so deluded? Because they want to be deluded !
