First Chapter: Nava-prameya-siddhanta
(Nine Truths of Evidence)

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : The holy names have all the sweetness of the madhurya pastimes of Radha and Krishna, encapsulated in the tablet of the holy names. Always keep the names in your mouth and you can penetrate deeper into the pastimes of the Lord.

One has to chant with ultimate respect as the Lord is present in the transcendental sound vibration. If the Lord would come to our home would we think of something else, no never, we would be in bliss and ecstasy and rush to get him, and would not miss even a second. In the same way one should be in a very respectable state of mind whilst chanting the Holy Names.

In the modern times it is our great grandfather Bhaktivinode Thakur who reawakened the mercy of Nityananda and Gauranga to the world. Bhaktivinode Thakur dedicated his life to writing literature about their Lordships Nityananda Gauranga and Radha Krishna. He prayed to the supreme Lord Jagannath, Lord Gauranga, he prayed please send a divine associate of yours to this world
So the Lord being very merciful, sent Bhaktivedanta Saraswati Thakur. The divine sun who illuminated Kali Yuga.

He prayed and Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur appeared at the time of the Rathayatra festival of Lord Jagannath. When the cart of Jagannath was passing near the home of the new born child, the Ratha stopped there and even though the devotees performed a divine transcendental sankirtan, still Lord Jagannath would not move. Ultimately Bhaktivinode Thakur brought his divine son outside and then the garland of Lord Jagannath fell onto the child. He elongated his hands to reach for the mercy and then the procession moved forward, which indicated that it was actually Lord Jagannath whom sent Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati to the world to deliver the souls.

Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur went on to empower Bhaktivedanta AC Swami Prabhupada and many others. All of them were empowered to spread the Holy Names around the world, and here we are sitting in the association of devotees, all because of the mercy of the great acharyas such as these.

Vaishnava Siddhanta Mala

by Seventh Goswami Shrila Saccidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : Today we will start a beautiful book by Bhaktivinode Thakur which encompasses the whole philosophy of Gauranga Krishna Consciousness in 11 chapters. This book is "Vaishnava Siddhanta Mala". The Seventh Goswami Bhaktivinode Thakur wrote this so that devotees can easily grasp the teachings of Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

First Chapter

Nava-prameya-siddhanta (Nine Truths of Evidence)

Q. What command has the supremely worshipable Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu given to us?
A. His order is this: that we very carefully observe the nine instructions of truth that Sri Madhvacarya has given us through the guru-parampara (disciplic succession).

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : In our parampara the most confidential spiritual knowledge was first given by Krishna himself to Lord Brahma.
Later Lord Krishna came again as Gauranga Mahaprabhu, but before that Lord Brahma passed the knowledge to Madhvacarya, so that the knowledge would be transferred through the Brahma Madhvacarya Sampradaya.

So Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu chose this sampradaya , and he distributed the divine truths again originally given from Brahma to Madhvacarya. Even though the Supreme Personality of Godhead incarnates in this world, he accepts the guru parampara, he accepts the spiritual masters of the sampradaya.

The Lord does not have to accept any guru parampara as he is supremely transcendental, but he accepts so that he can show by example, because as the Lord will act, the common people will follow.

So the Lord accepts the guru parampara, as he knows that all the souls of Kali Yuga need to be connected to the parampara, the bonafide sampradayas.

Q. Who forms the guru-parampara?
A. The adi-guru (original guru) of all the spiritual masters in the disciplic succession is Bhagavan, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Showing His great mercy, He gave instructions in the truth to Lord Brahma, the adi-kavi (original poet). These truths were in turn taught by Brahma to Sri Narada, by Narada to Vyasa, and successively from Vyasa to Sri Madhvacarya. Such instructions received through this disciplic succession are called Guru-Parampara-Upadesa.

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : All is started from Lord Krishna himself, so in that way it is very important to know that the Lord is doing it to set up an example, in the Brahma Madhavacarya sampradaya.

Whatever the guru hears from his guru the guru repeats it to his disciples
the guru does not manufacture anything, and in this way the same knowledge remains intact and we can receive it in the disciplic succession as it is passed down.

It is like electricity coming from the power house, it comes to us via different electric poles and wires which have very little resistance. Preferably zero resistance, so that we can receive the full electricity with nothing lost.

So the guru in disciplic succession always quotes his own Guru, always quotes the words of Krishna and Gauranga, from Bhagavad Gita and Chaitanya Charitamrta, so that we can get the full power and the full knowledge exactly as it was originally given.

Q. What are the names of these nine instructions given by Sri Madhvacarya?
A. Their names are thus:
1) Bhagavan alone is the Supreme truth, one without a second.
2) He is the object of knowledge in all the Vedas.
3) The universe is real [satya].
4) Differences [between Isvara, jiva and matter] are real.
5) Jiva souls are the servants of Lord Hari.
6) All souls are different according to their different situations.
7) Liberation [moksa] is the name of attainment of Bhagavan's feet.
8) Bhagavan's pure worship [amala bhajana] is the only way to attain liberation.
9) Pratyaksa [direct perception], anumana [logic], and sabda [spiritual sound] are the three types of evidence.

1) Bhagavan alone is the Supreme truth, one without a second.

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : The Lord likes to propogate his teachings via his devotees, so he propounded the instructions through the mouth of Sri Madhvacarya. Lord Gauranga Krishna is actually Bhagavan, the Supreme Truth, no one is greater or equal to him, that is the essential truth of spiritual knowledge, he maintains all others.

The vedas say that their is one supreme consciousness who is the consciousness of everyone else
He is the one who is maintaining everyone and everything else, fulfilling all desires, we are all his parts and parcels and he is one single person.

Everything is not void at the top, at the top there is one person, the supreme truth, one without a second. As confirmed in Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says, "Arjuna please understand that no one is equal to or greater than me."

Noone can even become equal to the eternal servants of the Lord, for example, nobody can become the father and mother of the Lord, Nanda and Yashoda, Mother Shachi, Radha, Rukmini, Advaita Acharya, all these eternal associates are eternal. One should not try to become God or try to take the position of the Lord, simply try to become the servant of the servant of the Lords eternal associates.

The soul will get entry into the spiritual world only if the soul gives up the desire to become God, then only will the soul be happy. He must try not to usurp the position of the Lords associates.

So that one can enter into the spiritual kingdom the soul must give up trying to enjoy like God and instead try to give God enjoyment by chanting his Holy Names.

So in that way the soul will actually become eligible to enter into the Kingdom of the Lord.

2) He is the object of knowledge in all the Vedas.

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : He is the object of all knowledge n the Vedas. So once we understand he is a person and the supreme person in creation and his creation is unlimited, yet still he remains a person with characteristics and a divine form and performs divine transcendental pasttimes

3) The universe is real [satya].

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : Some sampradayas say that the world is an illusion, but our sampradaya, the Vaishnava Samradaya, says that this can not be so, as Bhagavan is true and real so anything coming from Bhagavan also has to be true and real.

How can the universe be false, it is true because Lord Krishna says that everything is emanating from him, he says that he is the superintendent of everything.

What we see around us is true, it is not false, but just a temporary arrangement so that we can try to enjoy like the Lord, it is actually real though, that is how it bewilders the souls.

As it is real and true,we can actually engage everything in this creation in the Lords service, all of it made of the elements, earth, water, fire, ether, etc .

The material creation, known as acit, is made of the Lord's separated energies.

The spiritual creation, known as cit sakti, is made of the Lords internal energies

.
The material world is a real and permanent creation of the Lord, created, maintained and destroyed....it is constant in that respect...constantly being created, maintained and destroyed. As Maha Vishnu lying in the causal ocean exhales, so are manifested the universes of the material creation. And as he inhales the whole material creations become unmanifest.

4) Differences [between Isvara, jiva and matter] are real.

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : The fourth principal given by Madhvacarya is that the Isvara (supreme controller) is the Lord and the jiva is the soul. There are qualitative similarities, but quantative differences between them.

The minute soul cannot become equal in quantity to the Lord, but each soul has an eternal connection with the supreme personality of godhead and so maintains some qualitative similarities.

The soul is sac cid ananda, the soul inherits the quality of the Lord, so there is an eternal connection present between the soul and the Lord. There is also difference between matter and the soul. The jiva, the soul, is said in the Bhagavad Gita to be 1/10000th the size of the tip of a hair.

The jiva is part of the spiritual energy of the Lord, but because it is infinitessimally small, the soul sometimes becomes overwhelmed by the material energy, so the soul is known as the marginal energy of the Lord, basically spiritual but because it has a tendency to be bewildered it becomes subordinate to the material energy.

The eternal associates of the Lord are known as eternal expansions of the Lord and they dont get overwhelmed by the material energy, they are not bewildered and when they do come down here, they only come to save the conditioned souls from the cycle of birth and death. The soul can be the manipulator of matter, the separated energy of the Lord, and this can cause the soul to think it is God as it can manipulate in this way.

But matter is the Lords inferior energy. The difference between Ishvara, jiva, matter is Cit, tatastha and acit respectively.

The material world is real, but the happiness here is very temporary and flickering and so it is illusory happiness that the material energy gives, everything is relative and full of dualities. Like when we put on the fan on in the heat, we think that we are happy for a while, but it is just a reduction of the heat from the fan for a while.

5) Jiva souls are the servants of Lord Hari.

Potentially every soul will start serving the Lord at 1 point or another, that is why Lord Krishna says, all the souls are heading in his direction, but the only question is time, if the soul is very rebellious, then it could take zillions of lives before a soul can even get an inclination to serve the Lord, to really connect with the Lord and chant his Holy Names.

The most fortunate thing for any soul is to come into contact with a devotee of the Lord, who is serving the Lord.

We should really start serving the Lord as soon as we know, as soon as we are told that its an emergency, that we may die at the very next moment. Immediately when we come to know this is the truth, we should take it up without looking back at the time we have wasted not trying to connect with the Lord.

All of us are part and parcel of the Lord and our constitutional position is to serve him by chanting his Holy Names. This chanting process is the inherent activity of the soul in the material and spiritual worlds.

The soul can serve the Lord in both places by chanting, all the gopis and other associates of the Lord are constantly chanting, all the great devotees in the spiritual world are engaged in sankirtan to serve Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

6) All souls are different according to their different situations.

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : Every soul is unique and has unique characteristics, Krishna said that all their were many Kings in Kurekshetra, all the souls there are unique and all have a unique relation with the Lord.

7) Liberation [moksa] is the name of attainment of Bhagavan's feet.

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : Real liberation is actually the attainment of the Vaikuntha planets where we can serve the lotus feet of the Lord.

There are five kinds of liberation, but merging into the body of the Lord is not accepted by any sane devotee. Srila Prabhupada says, "Krishna means two, Krishna and you"

Because the devotee does not want to merge with the Lord. Moksha, liberation is not to merge into some impersonal light
Again Srila AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada said
"Krishna means two, Krishna and you"

After real liberation the soul continues to serve the Lord in his own individual characteristic position. He does not merge, or become one with the Lord, in any impersonal way.

8) Bhagavan's pure worship [amala bhajana] is the only way to attain liberation.

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : Krishna can be understood if it can be understood that the soul has a separate identity and that he can serve the Lord. That is real moksha, real liberation.

The only way to attain permanent liberation from the cycle of birth and death is spotless bhajana,
to engage in bhakti yoga. Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita that, "Of all the yogis, the highest is the 1 who worships me with great love and devotion, one who worships me with sraddha, with faith," he says that one who worships him by chanting the Holy Names, that that person is actually the greatest yogi and achieves liberation from the cycle of birth and death and never comes back.

9) Pratyaksa [direct perception], anumana [logic], and sabda [spiritual sound] are the three types of evidence.

His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : Direct perception may be faulty, as if I see the sun with my eyes it looks like a small fireball, but in fact it is millions of miles in diameter, when the light goes off i cant see my own eyes, so my direct perception is faulty.

Logic also is faulty, the mind is prone to be in illusion and by dint of mental speculation we can not understand God.

Sabda means Sound Vibration. Because the mind is material and the Lord is spiritual, by logic one cannot understand the Lord. Sound vibration is the best method to realise the Lord.
Sound Vibration from the perfected souls, from Lord Krishna, Lord Gauranga and Bhaktivinode Thakur. From pure devotees who have no imperfections, hearing from such souls, and from the vedic scriptures. The vedas have no defects, so hearing such sound vibration, from guru is perfect.

Q santana : so the spiritual form of our is unchangeable like the material forms ?

A His Holiness Swami Gaurangapada : The material body is constantly changing, every seven years the material body changes, but the spiritual form is unchanging and eternal and is as per our relationship with the Lord, which we awaken by chanting Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
