2.1.2 The Theory of Neo-Darwinism
Over the years a number of new observations have been made and the knowledge of evolution and the theory of natural selection have been reanalyzed in the light of genetics, Mendelism, population genetics and biological species concept. This has given rise to "Modern Synthetic Theory". This modern synthetic theory of evolution, also called "Neo- Darwinism" is the merger of Darwinian natural selection and genetic theory. It presents a combination of mutation, variation, heredity, isolation and natural selection. In a nutshell, as random genetic mutations occur within an organism's geneticcode, the beneficial mutations are preserved because they aid survival. These beneficial mutations are passed on to the next generation. Over time, beneficial mutations accumulate and the result is an entirely different organism, .

On the one hand there is the question of whether or not modern organisms have evolved from older ancestral organisms or whether modern species are continuing to change over time. On the other hand there are questions about the mechanism of the observed changes... how did evolution occur? Biologists consider the existence of biological evolution to be a fact. It is argued that it can be demonstrated and the historical evidence for its occurrence in the past is overwhelming. However, biologists readily admit that they are less certain of the exact mechanism of evolution; there are several theories of the mechanism of evolution, .
