4.3 Accept persons of other sect, lineage or religion
Thus, we must accept a person from a different lineage, or sect, or even of religion. Now, this seems to be the hardest thing to do, namely, accepting a person who is religiously 'other'. What to say of religion and sect, we have discrimination even due to Guru-lineage. Often, a Guru is worshipped like a god, there being only a small service towards the Supreme Divine. Disciples of one Guru hardly mix with that of another. This is really unfortunate because I have personally been in contact with many of the outstanding Gurus who came to America and found all of them to be excellent. I often tried to prod the students of one Guru to pay respect to another Guru, but the response has been lukewarm. The fact is that as people, most of the students of these Gurus are very nice and thoughtful people. But, there is too much of religion and less of spirituality, and this does not allow them to have the higher vision that Krishna says a good yogi eventually develops: Sarva bhootastham aatmaanam sarva bhootaani cha aatmani, eekshate yoga yukta aatmaa sarvatra samdarshanaa [The person who is accomplished in yoga has a vision of equanimity, seeing all beings in his own self, and his own self in all beings].
