The Tota Gopinatha Temple
By His Holiness BRS Swami Gaurangapada

The Tota-Gopinatha Temple is situated in a remote area on the Cataka-Parvata sand dunes near the beach, and a tall city water tower; a 15 minute walk from the Samadhi tomb of Haridas Thakur. The Gaudiya Vaishnavas accept that Shri Gauranga Mahaprabhu ended His manifest transcendental pastimes in Jagannatha Puri by entering into this Deity of Tota-Gopinatha.

Lord Gauranga ordered Gadadhara Pandit to take care of the Tota-Gopinatha Deity and remain in Jagannatha Puri as a Ksetra Sannyasi. However, due to intense affection for Lord Gauranga, Gadadhara Pandit wanted to give up his life's vow to serve Shri Tota-Gopinatha. Finally, he accepted Shri Gauranga's order, and returned to his deity service in Jagannatha Puri. (M16/130-148)

Gaudiya Vaishnavas accept that Shri Gauranga Mahaprabhu ended His manifested pastimes in Jagannatha Puri by entering into the foot of the Tota Gopinatha Deity.

On the far left altar is Lord Balarama and His two wives Revati and Varuni. The middle Deity is Tota Gopinatha, with black Radharani (on the left of Gopinatha) and a black Lalita (to the right of the Lord). Lord Tota Gopinatha is in a sitting position (cross-legged, padmasana). On the right altar are the Dei¬ties of Radha Madana Mohan and Gaura Gadadhara. Shrila Gadadhara Pandita who is none other than Shrimati Radhika Herself in Gauranga’s lila used to worship Lord Tota Gopinatha. He remained in Jagannatha Puri as a Ksetra Sannyasi (one who never leaves the Dham).

According to the priest, this temple is called Tota Gopinatha because Lord Gopinatha appeared within this garden, or tota. In the courtyard of the temple there is a miniature marble impression of feet. These footprints are said to be Radharani's.

On the south eastern corner of the temple of Lord Jagannathdeva near the Sanddunes is the most holy place named “Yameshwar-Tota” . In the oriyan language,Tota means Garden.

Lord Yameshwar Shiva is a form of Lord Shiva other than the five forms of Lord Shiva who are the gate keepers & watchman of Lord Jagannath.Adjoining the temple of Lord Yameshwar Shiva on the southern side there is a most beautiful garden known as Yameshwar Tota. Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu awarded this most auspicious garden as a place of residence to shri Gadadhara Pandit, who is Shrimati Radharani herself in Gauranga’s pastimes.

gadadhara pandit rahila prabhu pashe

yameshwar prabhu jare karaila avase

{Chaitanya Charitamrita ,15.183}

In order to have direct audience of Shri Gadadhar Pandit & to hear his supremely sweet expalnations of Shrimad-Bhagvatam, Lord Shri Gaurangasundar would daily come to Yameshwar Tota. On holding the exquisite beauty of The Yameshwar Tota Garden , Lord Gauranga would immediately remember the divine Grooves or Nikunjas around The Radha-kund & Shyama-kunda in Vrindavava. On the holding the nearby Chataka Parvata Sanddunes , Lord Gauranga would remember the Govardhana Hill of Vrindavan.

Seeeing the gigantic Banyan tree in Yameshwar-Tota , Lord Gauranga would remember the holy place of Vanshivata where Krishna is eternally playing his flute in Vrindavan dham. Seeing the Salt water ocean next to Yameshwar Tota, Lord Gauranga’s rememberance of the Yamuna in Vrindavana was awkened . Thus we can conclude that this Holy place of Yameshwar Tota in Jagannath-Puri dham is completely non-different from Shri Vrindavan Dham & Lord Tota-Gopinath is the self same Vamshidhari Lord Krishna as He manifests in Vrindavan. Shrimati Radharani, Lord’s Hladini Shakti personally resided & served Lord Tota Gopinath in the form of Shri Gadadhar pandit for more than 24 years. Thus there is no doubt, whatsoever that this Temple of Lord Tota Gopinath & the garden of Yameshwar Tota is the direct manifestation of Shri Vrindavan Dham, within the 80 square miles area of Shri Jagannath Puri Dham.

The descriptions of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu coming to visit Lord TotaGopinath & his sweet pastimes there are mentioned in Shri Chaitanya Charitamrata, Antya Lila 4.116 :

jyeshta mase prabhu yameshwar tota aila

bhakta anurodhe taha bhiksa je karila

The pastime goes like this that Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu arrived in Yameshwar Tota one day & became overwhelmed with MahaBhava ecstasy & started calling out “ Where is my Prana-nath Lord Krishna?”

In this way , being absorbed in pure love of his own form of Lord Krishna, he started to dig the sand with his two Lotus hands, searching for Krishna. At that time Shri Gadadhar Pandit caught hold of the two lotus hands of Lord Gauranga & humbly inquired from the Lord the reason for his digging the sand. At that time , Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu asked Shri Gadadhar pandit, “ O Gadadhar ! If this holy place contains some Supreme wealth, Will you accept it? ” Shri Gadadhar Pandit replied , “ O Prabhu !I will accept as the honour the wealth which will be found & offered by you personally as my Life & Soul & as an ornament for my head”. Hearing this, Lord Gauranga replied, “Look Gadadhara, Please behold in this dust here . Don’t you see the tip of most gorgeous hair topknot of my Prana-nath Lord Gopinath here in the ground? Please come & touch it .”

And Low & Behold Shri Gadadhar could see the tip of the head of the most necterean & mellowful deity of Lord Krishna in the ground where Lord Gauranga had indicated. All the devotees became jubilant & ecstatic to see Lord Gopinath burried in the ground & immediately started excavating the deity out of the ground on the orders of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu. Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu then personally established this deity of Lord Krishna on the banks of Salt water ocean which is considered non-different from River Yamuna on the banks of Vrindavan. Since the Lord always saw the place of YameshwarTota as Shri Vanshivata , He gave the deity the name of “Gopinath” & instructed Shri GadadharPandit to render Nitya-Seva {Daily Worship & Service to Lord Gopinath}.

shriman rasa rasarambhi

vamshivata tatasthitah

karshan venur svanair gopir

gopinath shriye stunah

This is the verse to offer obeisances & glorification to Lord TotaGopinath, when one arrives at this most holy place.

Translation- “ I exclusively worship & glorify the most astonishingly opulent Lord Gopinath ,The Lord of Shri Radha & the Originator of The Supreme mellows of the Rasa-dance, Who stands in his Most Enchanting Three fold Bending form on the banks of theYamuna at Vanshivata. He plays his divine Venu{Flute} & attracts the Gopis for the Rasa-dance with the transcendental sound vibration of his flute.”

The beauty of Lord TotaGopinath is described by VyasaAvatar of Gaura-Lila, Shri VrindavanDasThakur in Shri Chaitanya-Bhagvat, Antya khanda, 1.114-116 :

gadadhar bhavane mohan gopinath

achena je hena nanda kumar sakshat.

“ In the home of Shri GadadharPandit at YameshwarTota, is the most enchanting deity of Tota Gopinath. He is directly Lord NandaKumar Krishna himself”.

apne chaitanya tane kariya chena kole

ati pashandiu vigrah dekhi bhule .

“ Lord Gauranga himself personally took Lord Tota Gopinath on his lap in great happiness. The characteristic feature of Lord Tota-Gopinath is that the hearts of even the most evil , cruel & sinful people {ati pashandiu}melts in love by seeing this deity. ”

dekhi shri muralimukha anger bhangima

nityananda ananda asrura nahi sima.

“Seeing the beauty of the flute on the lotus lips of Lord Tota-Gopinath & the charasmatic well formed bodily limbs of the Lord, there was no limit to the tears of loving bliss flowing from the lotus eyes of Lord Nityananda Prabhu”.

Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya

So today we will hear about the glories of the Supreme Personality of Godhead who is residing in Shri Jagannatha Puri Dhama with the name of Lord Shri Shri Radha-Tota-Gopinatha along with Shrimati Lalita devi the foremost assistant of Shrimati Radharani.

So I will read in Bengali first and then translate into English.

So in the south western corner of Lord Shri Jagannatha’s temple, in the sandy path of the sea is a very, very beautiful, enchanting garden which is known as Yameshvara-tota. “Tota” in Oriya means “garden”.

So in the Oriya language “tota” means garden or udyan which is like a past time place.

So the door keepers of Shri Jagannatha temple are the five Shiva’s and the five Shiva lingas. The five Shivas they are guarding the Jagannatha temple from all sides.

Shiva is having five forms and Yameshvara-Tota is one of them.

So just next to the temple, south of the temple of the temple of Lord Yameshvara Shiva, is this beautiful garden of Yameshvara-Tota.

So in this garden is the place where the Supreme Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu himself gave Gadadhara Pandita the place of residence. He granted Gadadhara Pandita his home for staying there, the Lord’s mercy because Gadadhara Pandita has taken the vow that he will always remain near the lotus feet of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu wherever he is; in Navadvipa or in Puri because he is the incarnation of Shrimati Radha Herself, and Radha cannot leave Krishna even for one moment. So Gadadhara, when Lord Gauranga after the twenty-fifth year of his past times he came to Shri Jagannatha Puri Dhama Gadadhara Pandita followed him and Gadadhara Pandita also took ksetra sannyasa. Ksetra sannyasa means a vow never to leave Jagannatha Puri. Ksetra sannyasa; it is a sannyasa, the detachment, to always stay in the dhama.

So to hear, to give his sakshaath darshan to Gadadhara Pandita daily Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu used to come to this garden of Yameshvara-Tota where Gadadhara Pandita was residing. He used to, from Ghambira, he used to have Jagannatha darshana, meet Haridasa Thakura inside the bakula, and then come to Tota-Gopinatha during the daytime to hear Shrimad Bhagavatam from Gadadhara Pandita because Gadadhara Pandita was the topmost rasika, connoisseur reciter of Shrimad Bhagavatam. When he used to recite Bhagavatam even the stones would melt in love and even the birds- the non-moving things would become moving and the moving would become non moving!- the birds would get stunned in bliss they would remain, by hearing his Shrimad Bhagavatam, he used to sing it in different meters. So Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu did not want to lose this opportunity because ultimately Sukadeva Goswami is the parrot of Shrimati Radha, parrot. So Sukadeva has written Bhagavatam, so who can understand better Bhagavatam than Sukadeva Swamini Radha Herself? Only She can understand Bhagavatam perfectly because it has been written by Her servant, Sukadeva the parrot. So all the moods are there, so that is why in Kali Yuga Radha again came as Gadadhara Pandita to relish that same moods of Bhagavatam written by His servant Sukadeva, so Gadadhara here is a perfect…he is a perfect….

So Radha here is relishing the Bhagavatam written by his servant Sukadeva in the form Gadadhara Pandita in the most holy place of Yamersvara-Tota. It is such an auspicious place one can that imagine the most sublime singing of the Bhagavatam has been done here by Gadadhara Pandita which even attracted the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu to come there are hear.

A very beautiful explanation. That when the Lord would come into Yameshvara-Tota, seeing the beautiful forests of Yameshvara-Tota, the gardens, he would remember the kunjas around Radha-kunda in Vrindavana and Syama-kunda. There are eight kunjas around Radha-kunda, eight kunjas around Syama-kunda. Eight kunjas around Radha-kunda they belong to the eight Sakhis of Radha, and eight kunjas around Syama-kunda they belong to the eight Priya-narma Sakhas of Krishna. So, but even they have given their kunjas to the Sakhis as a donation. So Krishna would remember all the kunyas around Syama-kunda and Radha-kunda because those are the places which are the topmost past times of Radha-Krishna everyday from say 10:30 to 3:30 around are enacted there in Syama-kunda and Radha-kunda where even the sadhana-siddha gopis do not have entry there what to speak of even the great devotees like Narada and Brahma, Sukadeva and Lakshmi they are not even able to go there. It is inaccessible. Very, very intimate past times are enacted of Radha and Krishna which are the subject matter of meditation of rasika-bhaktas who normally chant in the afternoon, meditating on those past times, nitya-lila. So, when Gauranga Mahaprabhu used to come in Yameshavara-Tota he could feel that these gardens, he could remember the nikunjas. So he would come I think, from this we can understand that he would come to Yameshavara-Tota in the afternoon when those past times in Vrindavana were going on in Syama-kunda, Radha-kunda, so he would remember those kunjas and samudra-darshane yamuna he would see the ocean nearby he would remember Jamuna, his dear-most consort and just opposite in Yameshvara-Tota there is a sand dunes the Lord would see those sand dunes and remember Govardana, perfect I mean he would be so immersed that’s why Jagannatha Puri Dhama is so auspicious because Gauranga Mahaprabhu has manifested Vrindavana Dhama here by his divine mercy, that also in the mood of separation which is the most intense mood for which Krishna Himself comes to Jagannatha Puri in the form of Gauranga to relish this vipralambha, separation. In the Vatta-rksha there is a very gigantic banyan tree there and seeing that the Lord remembered vamshi-vatta in Vrindavana where Krishna’s playing the flute inviting all the gopis for the rasa dance, there is also a very big banyan tree there. So the Lord remembered vamshi-vatta and….in that way Lord Guaranga was totally in the mood of Vrindavana when he reached Tota-Gopinatha. Shriman Mahaprabhu, he is

we can understand that very, very regularly Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu used to come to Tota-Gopinatha if not daily, from this following verse from Chaitanya Charitamrta

So one day Shriman Mahaprabu came to Yameshavara-Tota gardens and he was totally absorbed in mahabhava the highest mood, the highest level in bhakti-yoga, which can only be achieved by the assistance of Radharani in madhurya rasa. So he came there in divine mahabhava in the mood of Radha, and he started crying out,

“where is my prananath, where is my prananath, amara prananath kotai”

“Prana” means “soul” and “nath” means “the master”; “where is the master of my soul? Where is he? Where is he?”

So though Gauranga is Krishna Himself in the mood of Radha, so in the mood of Radha he is crying out for himself. ‘Where is he? Where is my prananath?’ and in that mood he suddenly bent down in the ground and he started removing the dust the baluka in the ground. Uparsaretha; removing and throwing it in another place, karetha-lagile.

So Gadadhara Pandita caught the lotus hand of Gauranga and said, “My dear Lord why are you digging the ground suddenly today? Please tell me the reason for this transcendental action which you are performing today.”

Very beautiful. Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu looked at Gadadhara and told Gadadhara Pandita, “My dear Gadadhara if at this, in this ground here if I find a very great treasure, will you accept that treasure? Nidhi; if I get a get a big nidhi; treasure, will you accept it?”

Gadadhara Pandita said,

“My dear Lord Gauranga Prabhu, whatever you give me; your mahaprasad, your treasure is become the crown of my head, I accept it on my head as a crest jewel of all my life.”

So in the ground, Lord Gauranga said,

“See, some here. See, here my prananath, Gopinath Krishna you can touch his chuda- “chuda” means in the top of the head- you can touch it come here. Try to touch it, touch him.”

So in that way Gadadhara Pandita really could feel the Lord’s chuda, his top of his head, his crown, his hair, he could feel. So immediately he became very, very ecstatic in pure love and all the devotees they got together to quickly remove the dust, the sea sand around the Lord deity. Actually it was a very, very rasamayi deity, full of transcendental mellows vigraha. Just by touching the chuda, the top of the head, Gadadhara could make out the Lord is full of divine mellows, very special, very beautiful, very divine.

So Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu told Gadadhara Pandita that, ‘che murti shri gopinathera’ you will please Lord Gopinatha. I give him the name of Gopinatha. Gopinatha is the prayojana deity, the ultimate sambhandha. First we connect our sambhandha that is Madana-Mohana, then abide means we render devotional service, that is Govinda. And Gopinath is prayojana. Madana-Mohana is because in the sambhandha stage one is captured by cupid of the material world, so when one tries to develop a relationship with the Lord then one can conquer the cupid of the material world by Madana-Mohana; Madana means cupid and Mohana means Krishna who is the attractor of cupid. So Madana-Mohana is the form of Krishna for the beginning stage of devotional service. We have to sambhandha first, connect ourselves with Madana-Mohana, get attracted to Him and then Govinda, means when we engage in His devotional service then Govinda; Go means senses and our senses become very blissful by engaging in devotional service. One who gives pleasure to the senses of Radha that is why his name is Govinda. Or one who gives pleasure to our own senses, or one who maintains the cows, gives pleasure to the cows of Vrindavana. So that is Govinda. And then ultimately, the ultimate stage is to become attracted to Gopinatha; prayojana level where in the stage of pure love one will become a confidante of Shrimati Radharani and become attracted to Gopinatha, the master of the Gopies. Ya Gopinath vamani vedanas. Bhaktivinode Thakura is saying,

Oh Gopinatha! All the asuras who came to kill you they achieved you! But I am trying to be a devotee, why am I still not delivered? Why have I still not got your mercy?

Vinode takilo vashi Vinode; still sitting and waiting for your mercy, why is your mercy not coming to me? I am at least trying to become a devotee, you delivered the demons; you gave Putana a direct place in Goloka Vrindavana even though she came to kill you, so why?

So one can sing that songs actually, Gopinatha, when one goes to Gopinatha temple. Even Bhaktivinode Thakura used to spend a lot of time when he was in Jagannatha Puri for many, many years in Tota-Gopinatha temple. He used to come there for chanting. In Harinama Chintamani he has mentioned the process of chanting which he has seen in Jagannatha Puri from various great souls of that time. One was Svarupa das Babaji Maharaja and…

So, Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu told Shrila Gadadhara Pandita. He established Lord Gopinatha there and he said, “this is the best place for Gopinatha because utkale jamuna datta. Jamuna is the ocean and this is vamshi-vatta this is the nikunjas of Vrindavana this Yameshvara-Tota gardens so please worship him here very nicely.”

So the glories of Tota-Gopinatha have been described by the Vyasa of Chaitanya lila Thakura Vrindavana das in Chaitanya Bhagavat where he says,

gadadhara bhavane mohane gopinath achena je hena nanda kumara sakshath

“Gadadhara bhavane mohane gopinath” in the home of Gadadhara, the Mohana, all enchanting Gopinatha is residing and hena nanda kumara sakshaath; he’s appearing he’s kumara sakshaath; the son of Nanda Maharaja. So,

apane chaitanya aniya karia chena khole athi pasandira che vigraha deke bhule

Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu took Lord Gopinatha in his lap before installing him so it’s very, very auspicious, the Lord is very dear to Lord Gauranga that is why athi pasandi those who are athi pathaki athi, too much sinful and degraded people of this world they will also forget all their sinful activities. Vigraha deke bhule, they will forget their sinful life and they will become wonderful devotees of the Lord simply by seeing Lord Tota-Gopinatha face to face. Tota-Gopinatha Bhagavan a-ki jaya!

dekhi shri murali mukha angera bhangima nityananda ananda ashrura nahi sima

Seeing the murali mukha shri murali mukha angera bhangima. Very beautiful Bengali used by Vrindavana das, he’s a born poet. angera bhangima, bhangima means the three fold bending form, transcendental form of Gopinatha, with the beautiful flute on his lips. nityananda ananda ashura nahi sema; there was no limit to the tears which came out was rolled down from the eyes, the lotus eyes of Nityananda Prabhu when he came to Tota-Gopinatha. He always used to come to meet Gadadhara Pandita whenever he was here in Jagannatha Puri for four months of catur-masya when all the devotees from Bengal used to come. So ananda ashru, Nityananda Prabhu’s ananda ashru continuously were rolling seeing the most beautiful form of Gopinatha.

One day, suddenly Lord Nityananda Prabhu came to Yameshvara-Tota without any prior intimation.

At that time Gadadhara Pandita was reciting Shrimad Bhagavatam for the pleasure of Lord Shri Gopinatha.

So it is described that even if one is reciting Bhagavatam which is grantha bhagavan if sakshaath bhagavan Nityananda comes, is coming or if some very advanced vaisanava is coming one should get up from the seat of even Bhagavatam and one should offer obeisance’s to the great personality. Here is the Lord Himself, Nityananda Balarama, who is the subject matter, vishea, of Bhagavatam. So, Gadadhara Pandita who is very expert in vasinava etiquette, he immediately parithaga, he gave up the reading of the Bhagavatam and immediately came before Lord Nityananda Prabhu and offered his obeisance’s. They both offered obeisance’s to each other and glorified each other and then both of them started crying in love, prema kandana karithe lagilen. We saw in Shrimad Bhagavatam how Romaharshana suta, he was reciting Bhagavatam on a very high seat to very, very qualified bhramanas and when Lord Balarama came there, Romaharshana suta did not get up to offer his pranam. He was so foolish he did not understand the Lord whom he was talking about is actually come there! So, Balarama to teach a lesson to this world he a ____?? grass, a piece of grass, he just touched Romaharshana suta and he died.

So Gadadhara is Shrimati Radha Herself, how can commit such a mistake.

So beautiful scene was created in the Tota-Gopinatha temple. Both the Lords were looking at each other, Nityananda and Gadadhara and both bodies became covered with ecstatic symptoms of bliss; goose bumps and tears and choking of the throat, hairs standing on the end and all the devotees assembled around these two Lords and they also started crying. ananda ashru visurgan karithe lagilen, ananda ashru.

So both the prabhus they became a little steady, they steadied themselves and then they came before Gopinatha and they engaged in the kirtana of Lord Gauranga’s Holy Names. Chaitanya kirtan, chaitanya mangala kirtan. Auspicious kirtan of the Holy Names of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

So they engaged in, Gadadhara and Nityananda engaged in, chaitanya mangala sankirtana.

So Gadadhara Pandita gave invitation to Nityananda Prabhu to have mahaprasad of Lord Gopinatha, Tota-Gopinatha.

So Nityananda Prabhu had brought the most finest white rice from Bengal, ekman, ekmana, for Lord Gopinatha he offered it to Gadadhara a very beautiful colourful cloth, he offered it for Lord Gopinath. Gopinathji is so sublime and so great that even Lord Nityananda Prabhu wants to serve him. So,

So with Gadadhara’s hands, two lotus hands, these offerings were offered to Lord Gopinatha. When Gadadhara Pandita welcomed, invited Nityananda Prabhu for mahaprasad he still had not cooked, he just invited him that “please be here”. So,

So Gadadhara he cooked beautiful various ingredients, nija, he took the leafy, the leaves, this particular type of spinach leaves from this garden of Yameshvara-Tota. And, dattvara gaura priya shak; that that shak is very dear to Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu. So he cooked that shak and, su komala tentula patra; the leaves of tentula which are very delicate, he made them into paste and he put some salty water of the sea; samudrera rona jaldia ek prakara amlavanjan, kind of a sour vegetable he prepared for Gopinath. An then he cooked the beautiful, exquisite white rice which Nityananda Prabhu had brought for Lord Gopinatha and he offered that. He brought those offers in front of Lord Tota-Gopinatha.

Just at that time from nowhere! As if from nowhere Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu appeared there and He was shouting ‘Hare Krishna! Krishna! Haribol!’ and he came there, bolite bolite akasmat datta upasit aya, and he started shouting for Gadadhara, “Gadadhara, where are you? Gadadhara, where are you?”

So Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu had become so much attracted to the divine, this topmost affection of Gadadhara that without invitation the Lord has come there. See this is the greatness of pure devotion that Duryodhana offered chapan bhoga to the Lord in Hastinapura, he offered so many different varieties of food but there was no devotion so the Lord did not accept his invitation. But the Lord went to Vidura without any invitation! Vidura had not invited because Vidura was thinking that there was Duryodhana, Bhishma, Dronacarya and all great personalities in Hastinapura, why will the Lord come to my lowly home? The Lord went there without invitation. That is the power of devotion. Here also, Gadadhara cooked beautiful for Gopinatha and Nityananda’s offering was there and so Lord Gauranga, he appeared at the speed of mind, wherever he was, the Lord does not have to walk. So he became attracted to the offerings of Gadadhara, to the love of Gadadhara, to the offerings of Lord Nityananda. The Lord thought “when will I, where will I get a chance to taste such sublime mahaprasad?”

So Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu continuously was praising the divine cooking of Gadadhara Pandita, the divine offering of Nityananda Prabhu and the divine mahaprasad of Tota-Gopinatha, was a perfect combination. He was praising these three all the time and he accepted the mahaprasadam of Lord Tota-Gopinatha. Somebody request the pujari give a donation the pujari will give a nice laddu mahaprasad Tota-Gopinatha. That is very, very fortunate to have that because Gauranga Mahaprabhu himself is praising.

So Advaita Acharya, why he should miss out in such a transcendental occasion? So he also was present. And Nityananda and Advaita they sat on parshua one side of Gauranga Mahaprabhu and on the right, Nityananda is always on the right. And they accepted the mahaprasadam of the Lord along with Lord Gauranga Himself and all the devotees were waiting to loot, to steal, the remnants, the maha-maha prasada because this is a double, triple mercy; mahaprasada of Tota-Gopinatha and offering of Nityananda, cooking of Gadadhara and then remnants of Lord Gauranga! I mean so much mercy, they were waiting and immediately when it was over all the devotees they loot and they simply pounced on the mahaprasadam.

This was the past time which occurred in Tota-Gopinath we will recite the Bengali verses for that at one stretch;

Gauranga is saying, ‘see Gadadhara, ami kena amendrena bitar; why you have not invited me, why am I not included in the invitation? You gave to Nityananda Prabhu to have this mahaprasad, why I was left out of this invitation? Amita tomara douy hoita bina nahe; I am not different from both of you we are all members of the Pancha-Tattva, I am also member of the Pancha-Tattva we are all none different; pancha-tattva vatmagam krishnam bhakta rupa svarupagam bhakta avataram bhaktakyam namami bhatka saktikim. So why did you leave me out of the invitation? Nadile tomara baline amilai; if you don’t give me, if you don’t invite me, I will forcibly eat your mahaprasada. Because where will I get chance mahabhava?

[second part of lecture]

Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya

So we saw the past times of Tota-Gopinatha yesterday. Today we will continue his glories.

One time when Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu was just going towards Yameshvara-Tota to meet Gadadhara Pandita to hear Shrimad Bhagavatam from his lotus mouth there was a devi dasi. Devi dasis they perform for Jagannatha, dance. She was singing in the gurjani ragini in a specific raga the beautiful Krishna krishnok tida the beautiful verses of Gita Govinda by Shrila Jayadeva Goswami. Because that is what they are trained to sing for the pleasure of Jagannatha. So she was singing,

From far the Lord heard that beautiful singing of Gita Govinda. The Lord did not know who was singing, male or female. She was totally absorbed in divine transcendental consciousness so he manifested love, loving symptoms all over his body and he was astonished.

So Gauranga Mahaprabhu not at all in external consciousness. He could not, means he did not, think who is singing male or female, stri or purusha singing, he did not anyway, you know he remembered the Gopies because the singing female voice. So, he has no external consciousness whether male or female is singing and, prema aveshe dat prathe lakshana karia mahaprabhu, prema aveshe; he became in the ecstasy of prema, he started running towards that person who was singing with the desire to embrace the singer who was singing. Because such glorious Hari katha, Hari lila, Radha-Krishna’s lila was being sung.

So in the Yameshvara-Tota area, garden, there is a lot of forest and kata and lots of thorny plants and Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu did not even consider what was coming in his way because he was so absorbed in the subject matter of Gita Govinda. And he was actually in Vrindavana, in his own abode relishing his own past times as Krishna. So he was running with speed, very fast speed, walking towards the singer.

Even his body had thorns, went inside his body and blood was coming. I mean it was struck by thorns but the Lord did not even understand what was happening. Such, such is the example he has shown; how much ecstasy of Krishna consciousness we should be in. We should go above the bodily platform; that is real bhakti.

So Govinda, Lord Gauranga’s servant, seeing this that Lord is running to Yamsehvara-Tota, Govinda also started running behind the Lord very fast. Actually it was his duty to protect the Lord from these thorns, to hold the Lord, but if the Lord does not want to be held then who can hold him?

So when the devi dasi was just very near to the Lord, the Lord has reached there and Govinda knowing that the Lord is exhibiting the past times of a sannyasi, he was very eager to protect the Lord. So Govinda from the back side, he could not catch up with the Lord because Lord was walking very speedily, but Govinda said from the back, “stri lokera ghan”, he said that it is a woman singing my dear Lord. Immediately when the Lord heard it he came into external consciousness and he caught hold of Mahaprabhu and stapan koria, made the Lord steady.

Just by hearing the word stri or ‘woman’ the Lord Gauranga came to external consciousness.

Mahaprabhu looked towards Govinda and profusely thanked Govinda and said, “Govinda you have saved my life today”. That was one of the past times which happened in Yameshvara-Tota.

Third past time,

So the great acarya of the Vallabha sampradaya started by Rudra, Lord Shiva himself and the Acharya Vishnuswami, the acharya in Rudra sampradaya. Vallabha Acharya came in that sampradaya. Vallabha Acharya came to Jagannatha Puri to understand Gauranga Mahaprabhu as Krishna Himself, he has heard that he is Krishna Himself; he wanted to see with his own eyes. So that Vallabha Bhatta, Vallabha Acharya, he was very interested in hearing Shrimad Bhagavatam because he had written his won suboninitika commentary of the Shrimad Bhagavatam so he was interested in hearing the topmost narration of Bhagavatam directly from the lotus mouth of Shrila Gadadhara Pandita in Tota-Gopinatha temple. So he used to come here everyday to hear Bhagavatam, whenever he used to be in Jagannatha Puri.

So Vallabha Bhatta was a little bit proud that he has written a big commentary on the Bhagavatam surpassing the Acharyas’. He was saying that “my commentary is better than Shridhara Swami’s- orginals commentary”. So, Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu was a little displeased internally. And one day he came to Gauranga Mahaprabhu and asked a question, “why do you chant Krishna’s name loudly? Because all the souls are the energies of Krishna, the wives”- like a soul is a kind of a prakriti and the Lord is purusha- “so a wife should not take the name of the husband loudly. So why the soul, why are you chanting the name of Krishna loudly?” He asked Advaita Acharya actually. Advaita Acharya said, “see Vallabha Bhatta, you are in the direct audience of the supreme personality of Godhead, Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu. He will answer your question.”

So Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu said, “See my dear Vallabha Bhatta, a wife should not chant the name of the husband loudly, but if the husband orders the wife to chant his name, that order is more important than that etiquette.”

So normal is that one should not chant the name of the- but if the husband orders, similarly Lord Krishna has ordered in the Gita, sastham kirtanayan tohamah ajana pari upashate; always do my kirtana loud, kirtana means loudly.

He said in the purana that where my devotees are singing loudly, evam vrata svapriya nama kirtayah jatan o rago d’chito au chea hastite rodidthe rothe gayathe oun madavanditiyavah lokha bhaya

Bhagavatam says that, “where my devotees are chanting my name loudly, with melted heart”- evam vrata svapriya nama kirtayah jatan o rago d’chito, dutacito means melted heart, with love and devotion- “that place I reside there always.”

So Gauranga said, “that is the higher order of the Lord, so that should be followed first before seeing all this moral rules and regulations.”

So Vallabha Acharya was very satisfied, but then he was not, he still wanted to make the Lord hear his commentary which he thought was higher than Shridhara’s commentary. So Gauranga Mahaprabhu was, so all the devotees also in Puri were not very favorable towards Vallabha Bhatta. But Vallabha Bhatta would come to Tota-Gopinatha and catch hold of Gadadhara, because Gadadhara was very simple devotee, simple hearted pure devotee.

So Tota-Gopinatha, Vallabha Bhatta came to Tota-Gopinatha and said that, “you please hear my vyakya of Krishna naam, of Bhagavat”. So Gadadhara Pandita folded his hands and told him,

So Gadadhara Pandita said, “see my Lord Gauranga is antariyime; he knows everything, so if he did not want to hear any, if I start hearing your vyakya then he will know my, he will know what has happened. And I don’t fear the Lord, the Lord is very dear he is very priyah to me we are very intimate, he will not consider it, but his devotees are very vishum in Jagannatha Puri, they will start criticizing me, my dear Vallabha.”

So Jagannatha Bhatta sorry- Vallabha Bhatta was worshipper of Bala Gopala mantra in vatsalya rasa, worshipping the Lord as a child, Bala Gopala. But in the association of Gadadhara, who is Radharani Herself, he had a change of mind, change of, and he got attracted to kishora lila, madhurya lila rasa.

So by association of Gadadhara he wanted to relish the kishora rasa, the rasa lila, the past times and he wanted to take diksha from Gadadhara in madhurya rasa, Hari Naam. And he repeatedly, again and again, requested Gadadhara Pandita, Shrila Gadadhara to give him mantra diksha in this rasa.

Shrila Gadadhara Pandita said,

“I am surrendered to Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu, without his desire and his permission I cannot give you diksha, I cannot do anything.”

“Because you are coming to me, that itself, Lord Gauranga will chastise me. So how can I act without his permission?”

But gradually, in the ratha yatra, when Vallabha Bhatta saw Gauranga Mahaprabhu dancing in the highest ecstasy, bliss of mahabhava, he expanded into seven forms in the seven sankirtana parties, Vallabha Bhatta realized he is Krishna Himself. His faith awakened in the Lord and Gauranga Mahaprabhu became pleased towards Vallabha Bhatta. And Gaurahari and Gadadhara, both the shaktiman and shakti. They are non-different from each other, just like the sunlight is non-different from the sun.

That is why Gauranga Mahaprabhu is famous as Gadadhara prananath and as Gadhai-Gauranga.

Gadhai-Gauranga jaya Nitai-Gauranga.

So he’s Gadhai-Gauranga and Nitai-Gauranga. His names are famous because he’s very dear to Gadadhara.

So one day, Vallabha Bhatta invited Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu to his home for maha prasadam. And after serving the Lord very, very nicely, very, very menially, very humbly, he asked the Lord permission for taking diksha in the kishore gopala mantra from Gadadhara Pandita, and the Lord gave him permission.

So we will see further past times tomorrow.

Shri Shri Tota-Gopinatha Bhagavan a-ki jaya!

Shri Shri Gauranga Mahaprabhu a-ki jaya!

Shri Shri Nityananda-Balarama-Revati-Varuni ki jaya!

Shri Shri Gaura-Gadadhara a-ki jaya!

Shri Shri Radha-Madana-Gopala a-ki jaya!

Shri Shri Bhaktivindode Thankura, Bhaktisiddhanta, Shrila Prabhupada, Shrila Gurudeva a-ki jaya!

Samaveda bhakta vrinda a-ki jaya

Nitai-Gaura premanande

So we will continue the past times, transcendental past times which have taken place in Tota-Gopinatha, Yamehsvara-Tota during the prakata lila of Lord Shri Gauranga Mahaprabhu and Shri Gadadhara Pandita.

So, when Tota-Gopinathaji was discovered from the ground by the Lord Himself, he was in the standing position, very high, very high, almost we can see that now he is in sitting position still he must be at least four to five feet high. So when he was standing he must have been seven feet. So in that way, Shrila Gadadhara Pandita was serving and later after Gadadhara Pandita, Gadadhara Pandita had given the service to Mamu Thakura Goswami, he was also a great devotee. So either of them, it is not very clear, it is not very sure whether it was Gadadhara Pandita or Mamu Thakura, because both were pure devotees. And both were serving Tota-Gopinatha- Gadadhara Pandita’s mercy.

Mamu Thakura Goswami, he took the seva of Tota-Gopinath after Gadadhara Pandita.

They used to do the shringar-seva of the mustaka, the divine head of Lord Tota-Gopinatha and the lotus face of Tota-Gopinatha was also decorated very nicely by Gadadhara Pandita and Mamu Thakura.

So, asamathar hovai; what happened is, some devotees say that actually after Gauranga Mahaprabhu disappeared from this lila Gadadhara Pandita became old very quickly, in separation from the Lord he was heaving sighs, he was constantly feeling tremendous pangs of separation from Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu. He could not bear the fact that he could not see Gauranga in front of him in his prakata lila.

So it was extreme separation, extreme vipralambha viraha bhava, Gadadhara Pandita started ageing very quickly, because he was thinking, “why should I stay in this world any longer when my Lord Gauranga is not there?”

So because of that Gadadhara could not stand up and decorate the lotus face of the Lord or could not put the garland, could not decorate the, even after maybe standing up he could not reach, reach out to the lotus head of the Lord for decoration. So Gadadhara started thinking, “what is the use of my life if I can’t serve Lord Tota-Gopinatha, do his shringar properly, decorate him?”

Some say it was Gadadhara Pandita, some say it happened to Mamu Thakura. So seva vahin, he felt that that seva was taken away from him he could not do that seva to serve the Lord in that way. So he decided to give up his life. That is how the devotees are attached; to serve the Lord.

So seeing that desire of his pure devotee, and the pain he was feeling for not serving him, the Lord could not tolerate it. So the Lord was standing, he decided to sit down. He bent his legs into padma asana and he sat down so that, because as much as a devotee’s- Gadadhara and Mamu Thakura, they wanted to serve him by doing his shringar-that much the Lord also wanted to receive that service. Both were greedy! The devotee was greedy to serve the Lord and the Lord was greedy to receive the service; this is known as bhakta-vatsalya shri krishna akarshini, it is the sixth stage in the Madhurya Rasamrta Sindhu it is described that the sixth stage of bhakti is where Krishna gets attracted to you, to the devotee.

And, shri krishna akarshini, and moksha labrugatta; these are the six stages; kleshagini and shubada are experienced in sadhana bhakti and moksha lagrugatta and sandrananda vishesatma, sudurlabha. Sudurlabha and moksha lagrugatta are experienced in raganuga stage and sandrananda vishesatma shri krishna akarshini perfects the stage where the Lord becomes attracted to the service. Like the Pandavas, the Lord never used to leave their palace because akarshini; the Lord was attracted by their devotion, the Lord became their chariot driver, He became their messenger, He became their advisor, He became their family relative, He became their uncle, He became everything to them. The Lord was attracted to their devotion.

So similarly here, Lord Tota-Gopinatha, he showed that he is not made up of stone,

Chaitanya Charitamrta says that he is not a pratima he is sakshaat, vrajendranandan.

So, he desired to accept the service so he sat down.

So, remembering this past time one poet from South India has composed a drama to describe this past time which occurred.

So from that drama there is one verse which was composed in Sanskrit;

So it is also known widely that Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu has entered into the transcendental body of Lord Shri Tota-Gopinatha. Because Lord Gopinatha was found by Mahaprabhu Himself and it was worshipped by Gadadhara.

So Shri Thranganatha deva Goswami Mahashe he was the previous mahantha of Tota-Gopinath temple. He has described the past time of how Lord Gopinatha was discovered by Lord Gauranga, and how the Lord sat in padma asana, and how prakatir, the appearance of gauravarana, Krishna varana. Normally Radha is Gauravarana, kanchan, here She is black; Krishna varana radha. So here She’s so absorbed in Krishna consciousness, Krishna’s remembrance that She’s turned black. Just like Krishna sometimes gets absorbed in Radha consciousness and becomes golden, like Gauranga. In Imlitala in Vrindavana there’s a spot where Krishna sat and became golden. So in the same way here in Tota-Gopinatha temple, Radha has become black in intense remembrance of Krishna.

So he is giving a very extraordinary description that Gauranga Mahaprabhu came to see Gopinatha and he became so absorbed in Radha bhava that from him manifested a murti of Radha. It’s blackish in complexion, the mood of Radha, and She stood the left side of Gopinatha and at that time Svarupa Damodara Goswami who was also present, he started playing the flute.

So seeing that Lord Gauranga going into mahabhava and manifesting the form of Radha, Svarupa Damodara also took up a flute in his hand. So here there are many Acharyas give different opinions. Karanarapura in Chaitanya Gour Ganesh Dipika, he says that Svarupa Damodara is Vishaka, incarnation of Vishaka. Some Acharyas say Svarupa Damodara is the incarnation of Lalita. And Svarupa Damodara is also incarnation of Arjuna, sakha arjunia gopi, another Arjunia gopi in Vrindavana. So four, five divine personalities have merged in one form of Svarupa Damodara Goswami.

Seeing the vipralabha rasa even Lalita also became blackish, because of seeing Gauranga’s mahabhava, Svarupa Damodara also assumed that complexion.

So actually he manifested into Radha and Lalita, Lord Gauranga- Svarupa Damodara-but then Gauranga Mahaprabu became very engrossed in mahabhava and he was thinking, “where will Krishna hide? Where is my Krishna?” Then he surely thought that Krishna should be covered in gold, should be under the golden sand somewhere of the sea beach. So he went to the Yameshvara-Tota Garden nearby and he started digging the garden, because the sea sand is golden in color. So he started digging that and gradually from there he found Lord Tota-Gopinatha and also Lalita and Radha; they were found from inside the ground.

[Question from audience]: But they were manifested from this…?

Answer from His Holiness Bhakti Ratna Sadhu Swami Gaurangapada: No, they were found from the ground, and the Lord merged into them; Radha bhava. The lord manifested Radha bhava and Svarupa Damodara and Lalita only for some time. But actually the murtis were found in the ground.

So that is another view that actually the Lord was sitting with his folded padma asana only in the ground itself because of being absorbed in the love of Radha in gopi bhava the Lord could not remain standing. He was sitting in the folded padma asana. He was meditating on Radharani and Krishna- Gopies- in padma asana.

After the disappearance of Shrila Gadadhara Pandita, Shrila Mamu Thakura Goswami took over the service of Lord Shri Tota-Gopinatha. Gauranga Prabhu used to call him “mama”. “Mama” means “uncle”. So in that way he became famous as Mamu Thakura in Jagannatha Puri Dhama; purva range utkale mamake mamu bole.

In Oryia language ‘mama’ is known as ‘mamu’.

So his actual name was Shri Jagannatha Chakravarti. And shri sacimatara pitrudeva; the father of Saci devi, the Lord’s mother, is Nilabhara Chakravarti- his brother’s son.

[Question from audience]: so his brother’s son; so like cousin?

No, mama; his brother’s son, on the level of Jagannath Mishra, the Lord’s father. The Lord’s father’s cousin.

His original home was in Faritpura district, Magadora village.

So the guru pranali of the present seva its there in Tota-Gopinath is like this; it comes from Gauranga, Shrila Gadadhara Pandita Goswami who is Shrimati Radhika. matastari saubhagya manjari, there is some view that Gadadhara Pandita is Radha Herself, that is also true. And other devotees also say that Saubhagya Manjari, one of the manjari gopies also entered the body of Gadadhara. So the second after him is Shri Jagannatha Chakravarti or Mamu Thakura Goswami. Then third is Dattajuna Ragunatha Goswami, fourth is Ramachandra Radhavallabha, fifth is Krishna Jivana- fifth is Radhavallabha, sixth is Krishna Jivana, seventh is Syamasundara, eighth is Satamani, ninth is Harinatha, tenth is Navinchandra, eleventh is Matilal, twelfth Dayamayi and thirteenth is Kunjabihari.

So Dayamayi the twelfth descendant had two daughters; Vrajasundari and Rami.

So when this was written at that time Shri Gopinatha deva Goswami, he was the son of Vrajasundari, the daughter of Dayamayi the twelfth descendant.

So, when Kunjabihari Goswami disappeared then the widow, wife of Kunjabihari, she turned over the service of Shri Gopinatha to her own brother Shri Ranganatha deva Goswami.

Previously Lord Tota-Gopinatha did not have any treasure of his own.

So in the times of Patapudra five hundred years ago when Gauranga Mahaprabhu was present there was a tradition is Orissa that every temple the king would bury some wealth in the ground somewhere near the temple so that the- in case of an emergency- the seva of the Lord will not stop. So king Patapudra wanted to, because Gopinatha was so dear to Gauranga and Gadadhara. King Patapudra who was a disciple of Sarvabhauma and who had a direct audience of the Lord, he-mercy of the Lord- he wanted to bury some wealth for the seva of Lord Tota-Gopinatha.

But Gadadhara Pandita said to him,

Said, “I do not want to accept the wealth of a king. I will beg, madhu kare, and I will serve Lord Tota-Gopinatha.”

And when Mamu Thakura Goswami took over the service of Tota-Gopinatha he also followed the footsteps of Gadadhara Pandita and he also did not accept the wealth from the royal king.

In the continuing generation after Mamu Thakura, one of the sevaeta of Gopinatha they accepted the service from the king.

So he accepted and there is sambati, the land is around four miles from Tota-Gopinatha, mangala ghatera, near mangala ghat. That land belongs to the Tota-Gopinath temple because the king donated. And from that land grains and whatever are cooked. Whatever come that are used in the service of Tota-Gopinatha.

So, various festivals celebrated in Tota-Gopinatha is Baladeva abhir bhava; Lord Balarama’s janma. Janmastami ananda ustava; the next day after Janmastami. Shri Radhastami, shri Govardhana utsava anna kuta shri gadadhara pandita goswami ratirobha utsava; the disappearance day of Gadadhara Pandita Goswami, shri dola utsava dola yatra shri gaura janma utsava gauranga mahaprabhus gaur purnima pravita utsaveka ne yatha riti anushita haia take.

That way these celebrations are done in the Tota-Gopinatha temple.

So in that way daily three times the Lord is offered bhalya bhoga anna payasanna bhoga in the noon. In the evening is the utkalana bhoga and in the night anna bhoga again, that is four times there is offerings to Tota-Gopinatha.

So some say that Lalita is Ananga-manjari, the younger sister of Radharani, who is the guru of Bhaktivinode Thakura. So Ananga-manjari - Janhava, Janhava devi, Nityananda Prabhu’s wife; consort, she was Ananga-manjari in Krishna’s lila, RadhaKrsihna’s lila. So some say she is Ananga-manjari some say she is Lalita, and they are situated in the centre of the temple. In the southern side of the temple is Lord Baladeva; Lord Balarama; Lord Nityananda Balarama with his two eternal consorts and wives Shri Revati devi and Shri Varuni devi. These deities were established later.

And on the right side, the northern side, the left of Tota-Gopinatha our right, there are the beautiful deities of Shri Shri Gaura-Gadadhara and Shri Shri Radha-Madana-Mohana which were established by, worshipped and established by Shri Mamu Thakura Goswami himself.

When we enter gadadhara mandivera prangana when you enter on the southern side uttara purve we can have the darshan of Lord Shri Gopineshvara Mahadeva. That is the Yameshvara-Tota from whose name, this garden has got the name Lord Shiva and he also gets an offering daily in the morning, daily once.

In that way we conclude the past times of Tota-Gopinatha. There are unlimited past times. In Chaitanya Mangala it has been described that Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu used to go there daily, regularly to hear Shrimad Bhagavatam and he specifically wanted to hear the past times of Dhruva and Prahlada. He heard them one hundred times at least from the lotus mouth of Gadadhara Pandita and the Lord would be full with tears like streams, almost five to six streams of tears would roll from his eyes simultaneously when he would hear and he would always think, since he was always in the bhava of vipralambha of Radha-bhava, he would always think that how much determined Dhruva was to achieve Lord; in six months he performed severe austerities in Maduvava in Vrindavana. First month he lived on fruits, second month he lived on leaves, third month he lived on air, the last two months he didn’t even breathe. So fruits, water- one moth he lived on water. So in that way he performed severe austerities and when Gauranga would hear that he would feel that how much, in the mood of Radha, he would feel how much, feel great attraction for Krishna. It is very difficult to describe the mood of Gauranga because he is the Supreme Lord, but he used to feel inspired because when one is absorbed in Radha-Krishna’s madhurya prema, this conjugal love, then whatever one hears, whatever the past times one hears, whatever one chants, everything becomes imbued with madhurya rasa; everything becomes imbued with conjugal past times. Just like in Vrindavana even the santa, dasa, sakyera, vatsalya, all rasas are tinged with madhurya because madhurya is the topmost mellow in Vrindavana dhama. So similarly Mahaprabhu would hear the past times of Dhruva and Prahlada and get absorbed in madhurya rasa, Gadadhara’s mouth.

So one hundred times Dhruva, Prahlada and maybe Kapila; Kapila’s past times and instructions to his mother Devahuti. Very beautiful; full of pure devotional service.

In that way Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Goswami he came to Jagannatha Puri, he was very much attracted to Yameshvara-Tota, Tota-Gopinatha and he wanted to establish Shapushotam Gaudiya Matha in Yameshavara-Tota.

[Inaudible question from audience]

His Holiness Bhaktiratna Sadhu Swami Gaurangapada: Yes, he purchased the land there.

So this Purushottama-Dhama, Jagannatha Puri is very, very significant, very special for the followers of Shrila Saccidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura and Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Prabhupada because very long ago Vyasadeva he predicted in the Padma Purana, that all the four sampradayas’ teachings will be spread from Jagnannatha Puri Dhama in Kali yuga;

From utkala dhama, it is a verse from the Padma Purana which states that Purushottama Dhama, the devotion, pure devotion to Lord Gauranga Krishna will spread in all the four corners of the world. So therefore the Gaudiya Vaishnava’s in our line, this prediction is not only fulfilled because Gauranga Mahaprabhu- he is the origin of all the sampradayas- he stayed here for twenty four years and he preached the conclusion of all the sampradayas through the chanting of his own holy names, sankirtana, and his deep philosophy and instructions to his great devotees. And Haridasa Thakura’s residence here, Namacharya, the ultimate science of chanting of the holy name was also established in Jagannatha Puri Dhama. Not only that, but the most dear devotee of Gauranga also took birth here, who was really going to take his message, his names all over the world and his name is Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada so this Dhama assumes great significance because even more than the birth of the Lord, the vaishnava’s birth is even more auspicious according to Chaitanya Bhagavata because a vaishnava actually spreads the mercy of the Lord.

So Shrila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada, he was very keen to come to Yameshavara-Tota to do his bhajana there because the worship of Gaura-Gadadhara is the highest worship, in some cases it is even higher than Radha-Krishna worship; Gaura-Gadadhara prema vichitra vilasa. So Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati was very eager to establish a matha near Tota-Gopinatha. So, Gorbath Shahee, the area is called Gorbath Shahee under the water tank there. So he established a- and also all the unique features of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu were revealed in Jagannatha Puri Dhama, that is why

The personified form of Gauranga’s mercy Shri Shrimad Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada, he began his prakata lila in this holy place of Puri Dhama and this Puri Dhama remained very dear to his heart till the very end of his past times. In fact in the last one month he spent here in Puri Dhama his last visit to Puri took place, he only left Shri Purushottama Matha on the ocean beach on the morning of December 7th 1936 just twenty four days before he concluded his past times. So in the years since his disappearance many of his disciples, his grand disciples they’ve established mathas and temples all over Jagannatha Puri to beautify the town, increased his glories, glories of the saints and Chaitanya Gaudiya Matha is the birth place of Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura where Bhaktivinode Thakura and his family resided from 1870 to 1874, four years while he was deputy collector and magistrate of Puri Dhama. He totally systematized the offerings and the temple worship of Lord Jagannatha.

Bhaktivindode Thakura himself-the Supreme Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu; that’s a big, long past time maybe some other time- Bhaktivindode Thakura was preaching all over Bengal, Orissa, wherever he used to go but he was not, people would become devotees, but he was not very successful the way he wanted to he went to Mayapura Dhama, the birthplace of Lord Gauranga.

He cried to the Lord, “My dear Lord what should I do? How should I preach your holy names?”

He did not get any answer there, he came to the beach in Jagannatha Puri and he was rolling on the beach and crying to the Lord, “my dear Lord, please give me an answer”.

And then Gauranga Mahaprabhu appeared to him in a vision and said, “hoa sajana toshini- oh great devotee, oh my dear devotee please understand that when you are preaching this philosophy to the conditioned souls their hearts are full with lust, greed, anger, envy, so all this philosophy is striking their ears and rebounding from their ears it is not entering into the heart. So I would suggest that you stay in Jagannatha Puri Dhama and preach nama mahima; first preach about the glories of the holy names, my holy names. By hearing nama mahima repeatedly the jivas will get punya sukriti; piety to actually understand the philosophy.”

Nama mahima is very, very auspicious to hear. So by hearing nama mahima- that is why we have composed Nityananda Gauranga mahima mahastotra- nama mahima as much as we hear, it gives us the qualification to understand the scriptures, it gives us the qualification to chant the Holy Names with great faith.

So the Lord told Bhaktivinode Thakura to reside here. So Bhaktivinode Thakura built a wonderful, simple bhakti kuti just near to the Haridasa samadhi on the ocean beach and to fulfill the desire he wrote Harinama Chintamani, the great classic book; science of chanting the Holy Names.

And in that way Bhaktivinode Thakura said,

So in order to remember the Holy Names of Lord Gauranga Krishna Murari he, who is known as Bhaktivinode, he has given up everything and come to this land of Puri Dhama. In the land of Gauranga’s past times, he’s taken shelter of bhakti kuti. In 1903 Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura regularly gave discourses on Chaitanya Charitamrita in the presence of Bhaktivinode Thakura in his bhakti kuti.

In that way we conclude the past times of the Lord Tota-Gopinatha in Yameshvara-Tota. And there are so many unlimited past times we hope to continue later.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Shri Shri Lalita Radha-Gopinath Bhagavana ki Jaya!
