Shri Chaitanya Bhagavata Chapter 10........ yesterday we have seen the extraordinary mercy and the prayers of Shrila Mukunda which were offered to the lotus feet of the Lord, and the great pleasure of the Lord in hearing Mukunda's prayers. Today we will conclude this chapter, one of the Maha-Prakasha pastimes.

ei mata yata yata bhaktera mandala

yei kaila stuti, vara paila sakala

In this way bhaktera mandala, the society of devotees, each and every devotee, whatever benediction he wanted, that devotee received it by the mercy of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

Lord Gauranga was very, very merciful during this Maha-Prakash lila and wanted to fulfill each and every desire of his devotees. Those who offered prayers of the Lord, they also received special benedictions like Mukunda did.

shrivasa pandita ati maha-mahodara

ataeva tana grhe e saba vihara

Shrivasa Pandita is the maha-mahodara devotee of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu. The most fortunate of all the extremely fortunate because in his home Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu performed his supremely divine and transcendental pastimes of Maha-Prakasha.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu told Shrivasa that.....tested Shrivasa about Lord Nityananda. He told Shrivasa one day in the morning, " Shrivasa why do you keep this Avadhuta in your home, this Nitai, he will destroy your caste, he will destroy your life, family? Nobody knows where he has come from, where is his origin. Why do you keep him with you in your home?" Lord Gauranga tested Shrivasa, and Shrivasa Thakur replied, "My dear Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu, this is not proper that you want to test me. My dear Lord if Nityananda destroys my life, destroys my caste, destroys my family, takes everything away from me, still I have staunch faith in the mercy of Nitai, life after life." Bengali verse 3:57 "Even in Nityananda goes to a liquor den, my faith for him will increase constantly. Because I know he is going to deliver the people, the souls in each and every place wherever he goes. I will never doubt this most magnanimous personality. I will kill myself, but I can not give up the shelter of Lord Nityananda, Nitai." And Lord Gauranga got up saying Bengali verse 4:38 "O Shrivasa you have such faith in my Nitai, I am very happy today. I tested you and you have exhibited implicit faith in my Nityananda, that is why I will tell you I will give you benedictions, I will give you two benedictions. The first benediction is even if Laksmi Devi my consort even if by some unexpected calamity, if Laksmi Devi starts begging from door to door," Laksmi is the goddess of fortune of the whole creation, "but even if she starts begging from door to door, still Shrivasa I tell you, you will have no such scarcity in your home ever by my mercy, and secondly Shrivasa even the dogs and the insects, the children and the servants and all kind of living entities in your home are more dear to me than myself because you have such implicit faith in Lord Nityananda."

So that is why Shrivasa Thakura's home has been selected by Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu as his lila's tana, gopya lila's tana, the most confidential. In Vraja lila the most confidential lila's tana is Radha-kunda and Syama Kunda, every day in the noon from 10:30 to 3:30 around that time. Lord Krishna meets there with Radhika and the nitya-siddha gopis. Bhaktivinoda Thakura says in his Siddha Lalasa song, that after noon time the real rasika devotees they chant japa with a lot of meditation especially in the noon time because the noon time is Radha Kunda lila of Radha and Krishna which is the most sweetest of all nectar and even sadha siddha gopies do not have entry there and some few prema-rasika like Subala and Madhumangala, they can see by the tint of their good fortune.

Syama Kunda, Radha Kunda, just like Radha and Krishna manifested the most intimate pastimes in Syama kunda and Radha kunda, similarly Lord Gauranga and Lord Nityananda , Gadadhara, Shri Gadadhara, Lord Advaita, Shrivasa, they all manifested their most intimate pastimes in Shrivasa angan, the home of Shrivasa Thakura, the most confidential place described in the scriptures. The structure of Shrivasa angan will discussed at some other time, how many rooms are there, how many gardens are there; it's totally bejeweled.

Shrivasa Acarya Thakura had a vision of Shrivasa angan when he was in Navadvipa in Bhakti Ratanakara Shrivasa Angan is described in detail. So Shrivasa Thakura's house is full of Cintamani, every particle is touchstone there it is the ultimate desirable resting place for all living entities, in the merciful Nitai-Gauranga lila pastimes of the Lord.

yara yena-mata ista prabhu apanara

sei dekhe visvambhara sei avatara

The devotees saw Visvambhara in the same form which was the desire of their istadeva, their desire to see him, because he is Visvambhara and he is the avatari, the source of all incarnations, he manifested that form which was the dear most worshippable form of each devotee.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

?- Krishna 9:40, Radha-Krishna, Bala -Gopala Krishna, or Sita-Rama, Rama- Lakshman- Hanuman or the Catur vyaja the four handed form of Vishnu or Varaha, or Nrsinga, or whatever form the devotees Bengali 10:03 Lord Gauranga is present as the Supersoul Paramatma in every one's heart, so he could understand the specific desire of each and every devotee and therefore when they saw Gauranga, Lord Gauranga manifested that same form we can meditate on in that particular mellows according to their relation to the Lord. Ordinarily it would have taken millions and millions of lives of austerities to see that form that is so easily seen in the home of Shrivasa Thakur in the form of Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

Text 269

maha-maha-parakasa ihare se bali

ei-mata kare gauracandra kutuhali

So these pastimes are known as maha-maha prakasa.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

The Lord gave all kinds of benedictions, fulfilled all their desires and showed them all his different forms in his different incarnations to the respective devotees and in that way the Great Revelation, the pastime of Great Revelation and kutuhali and Gaurachandra, Lord Gaurachandra was ecstatic to make his devotees happy in this way.

Text 270

ei-mata dine dine prabhura prakasa

sapatnike dekhe saba caitanyera dasa

In this way day after day the manifestations of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu were seen by all the associates in Navadvipa along with their wives and their family. They were so fortunate.

Text 271

deha-mane nirvisese ye hayena dasa

sei se dekhite paya e saba vilasa

What is the qualification to see these pastimes? It is explained by Vrndavan Das Thakura here; Those devotees who are actually and factually dasa or servant of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu along with their body, mind, and heart, they fully surrendered their selves to the service of Gauranga Mahaprabhu's holy names, pastimes. They were able to see this vilasa, these pastimes of the Lord which are most confidential. The doors used to close, Shrivasa's doors, and ordinarily the people of Navadvipa were not allowed entry into Shrivasa angan just like in the other, even the eternal vraja rasis would not have entry because it is so confidential.

Text 272

sei navadvipe ara kata kata ache

tapasvi, sannyasi, jnani, yogi majhe majhe

So in that Navadvipa dhama, they were so many tapasvis, sannyasis, jnanis, yogis and so many different kinds of people who had the great fortune of being born in Navadvipa dhama

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapda:

Actually what happens is when the Lord performs his manifest pastimes in the material world, the eternal associates come with the Lord to serve him, but along with the eternal associates some living entities are also very fortunate that they take birth in that same dhama, and the Lord delivers them by his mercy.

Text 273

yavat-kala gita-bhagavata sabe pade

keha va padaya, karo dharma nahi nade

Some of them studied or taught Bhagavad Gita and Shrimad Bhagavatam for their whole lives, yet they could not change their religious practices, their impersonalistic religious practices, they could not change even after reading Gita and Bhagavatam. They could become absorbed in devotion to the Lord.

Text 274

keha keha parigraha kichu nahi laya

vrtha akumara-dharme sarira sosaya

Some of them took a vow not to accept any food or support from anyone else, that's why their bodies became totally shriveled and weakened by the performance of austerities, useless austerities, like celibacy, etc.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

But like we heard in Mukunda's prayers "Bhagavat bhakti henasya," if it is devoid of bhakti to the Lord, if they could not recognize their own Lord in Navadvipa, then all these activities became a total waste.

Text 275

seikhane hena vaikunthera sukha haila

vrtha abhimani eka-jana na dekhila

Vrndavan das Thakura is saying why didn't these people gain entry into Shrivasa anga, into Gauranga's lila? Because of their false ego.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

This yoga, jnana, karma, this kind of practices boost one's false ego, bhakti makes one humble, but all these other processes give a big boost to the false ego. One starts thinking, "I am going to achieve Gaura by my endeavors. I am a big yogi, I am a big jnani, speculator, I am a big karmi, I work so hard." The people become puffed up and that is why it is know as Bengali 16:36 the path of ascension, hard work, whereas bhakti yoga is know as the path of descension Bengali 16:42 means the devotee never feels he or she is qualified for the mercy of Gauranga Mahaprabhu and Lord Nityananda Prabhu and Radha Krishna. A devotee always prays to them and waits for the mercy to descend from them. A devotee never feels that he or she deserves that mercy. "Oh, I have performed so much sadhana bhakti, so much chanting, I deserve it now." No, that is not a devotee, a devotee never has an ego, a devotee simply serves the Lord with the hope that one day the Lord will glance mercifully upon him, and we saw in Mukunda's pastime that a devotee is willing to serve the Lord for millions of lives if that is the Lord's desire. Bengali 17:38 My dear Lord I only want your unconditional and causeless devotional service life after life. I do not care whether you put me into hell along with all the other sinful people, or whether you put me in heaven, or as a human being or an animal. Bengali 18:13 I do not want wealth, I do not want women, I do not want followers, I just want to render your causeless devotional service.

So some devotees take this verse and they interpret it saying that, "you see one should not even aspire to go back to Godhead." They say that one should not even aspire to go back to the kingdom of God and enter into the pastimes. One should just try to serve the Lord. But Bhaktivinoda Thakura explains that Gauranga Mahaprabhu in this verse of Siksastaka. He says," My dear Lord if you desire for me to stay in the material world, I am ready to stay. My desire is to come back to your abode and render direct service to you, but if you desire then I can even continue the cycle of transmigration, I am ready to wait forever to get your mercy." That is the patience and the perseverance of the devotee. A devotee should pray to go to eternity, Goloka Navadvipa, Puri dhama. A devotee should pray, surely, A devotee should not pray to always remain in this material world, but a devotee should be dependent, a devotee doesn't force the Lord. "My dear Lord I am such a great devotee of yours, please stop my cycle of birth and death immediately." No, a devotee doesn't force, a devotee proposes to the Lord, a devotee knows that ultimately it will be the Lord's desire, whereas the jnanis and yogis try to manipulate the Lord by the power of their sadhana, they think they can force God to reveal himself, or they think that they can become one with God. So that is why these kind of people are never able to, even one of such a person was not able to enter Shrivasa angan to see the most confidential pastimes of the Lord.

Text 276

shrivasera dasa-dasi yahare dekhila

sastra padiya of keha taha na janila

So Vrndavan Thakura is saying, "Those most fortunate servants and maidservants of Shrivasa Thakura, they were so fortunate that they got to see the pastimes of the Lord which are not accessible by even reading the scriptures. Which are not even accessible by sadhu sanga."

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

There is no more intimate pastime of the Lord than the Maha Prakasa in Shrivasa angan. Angan means courtyard, angan means the hall. So those servants and maidservants could see them face-to-face, personally, whereas the great learned scholars of the Vedic scholars could not see these pastimes. They all remained outside the house of Shrivasa Thakura. So Jaya Jaya we glorify the dasa and dasi of Shrivasa Thakura and we should pray to become the servant of their servants. To get the mercy of Shrivasa is difficult but to get the mercy of Shrivasa's servants is very easy, we should try to take the dust of their feet; we should roll in the dust of Shrivasa angan. Whenever we go there our bodies should be covered from the toe to the head with that dust, with the hope that one particle of dust that has touched the feet of the dasas and the dasis of Shrivasa's house can be touched on our body, so we can have visions of the Lord's pastimes which are still going on there. Bengali 22:45 Only very fortunate souls can see those pastimes, only by the mercy of Shrivasa and his associates.

Text 277

murari-guptera dase ye prasada paila

keha matha mudaiya taha na dekhila

Vrndavan das Thakur is saying, "That mercy that Murari Gupta and his servants, that mercy that they got, they saw directly the form of Lord Ramacandra. The Greenish form. That mercy, millions of people don't get even if they shave their head, matha mudaiya, millions of people shave their heads and try to worship Lord Rama, they try to see the greenish form of Lord Ramacandra, but they can't even approach the effulgence of the toenails of Lord Rama."

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

Bengali 23:50 Even the greatest munis, the most advanced munis, they shave their head or perform severe austerities but they cannot even approach naka, naka jyoti, the effulgence of the Lord's toenails. What to speak of seeing the form of the Lord, that form was seen by Murari Gupta and his servants without any big effort.

Text 278

dhane, kule, panditye chaitanya nahi pai

kevala bhaktira vasa chaitanya gosani

One will not achieve Gauranga Mahaprabhu by dhane, kule, panditye, by possessing great wealth, or by being born in a very aristocratic family, or by being a great scholar of the Vedas. If that was the case then the richest men in the world would be devotees of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, but they are not, they don't even have a cent, they don't even have a drop of faith in Lord Gauranga.

So one can see by that by wealth, by prestige, by scholarship one cannot attain Gauranga Mahaprabhu. "Kevala bhaktira vasa chaitanya gosani.""Chaitanya gosani," is he can only be conquered by devotional service and controlled by devotional service.

Text 279

bada kirti haile chaitanya nahi pai

bhakti-vasa sabe prabhu --cari-vede gai

By getting a very huge kind of popularity in this world, "bada kirti haile," one does not get Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, one does not achieve the Lord. The Lord becomes only controlled and only subordinate to the devotee who has pure devotion. That is the four Vedas singing this Absolute Truth.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

We see in the pastimes of Gaura Kisora Babaji Maharaja, the gurudeva of Shrila Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada how he used to totally shun this prestige and accolades of this world, because he knew by this kirti, by prestige, name, fame, whatnot, he would not be able to achieve the mercy of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu. To the extent that even when Thakura Bhaktivinoda wanted to have Babaji initiation from Gaura Kisora dasa Babaji, when he came to Godruma Babaji Maharaja heard it, he went, he left his bajan kurtira and he went and sat outside the house of a prostitute, where the fish were kept. So Bhaktivinoda Thakura searched the whole of Navadvipa, but could not, did not go in that area of the prostitute and the fish sellers. So he left back and Gaura Kisora dasa Babaji started chanting, "I cheated Thakura, I cheated the Thakura." So he was so much, of course Thakura Bhaktivinoda ultimately received diksha, paramhamsa, diksha, ..... and one couple they came from even Calcutta and many many rich men were coming to Gaura Kisora dasa hearing his bhajana, his sadhana, his depth, his realizations were all superexcellent. So one rich man came to him and Gaura Kisora dasa Babaji wanted to avoid him because if rich men, they come with materialistic motives it disturbs the bhajana,..... they display showbottle devotional service. Sometimes many rich men are sincere in their devotion but they are some rich men who make a show. So such a rich man came to Gaura Kisora dasa, and Gaura Kisora dasa Babaji knew that, "I will get a lot of name, fame, reputation because of this rich man, and also his intentions are not pure." So the rich man offered some services so Gaura Kisora dasa said, "You go to the Navadvipa market and buy me a very beautiful silk dress. I want a golden stick, and a golden turban, and golden shoes, special shoes, like a raja, like a king." So he went to Navadvipa and bought so rich clothes, and that Babaji who used to wear the clothes of the corpses, the dead corpses, he was at such a high platform of renunciation, he used to take some clothe and cover his body, that Babaji took that silken dress and dressed himself with that stick and golden turban and he walked on the streets of Navadvipa like a king, and this rich man developed doubts in him. "Why this Babaji, he has taken such a big money donation from me and bought the silken dress, why is he showing off?" And He left Babaji and Babaji started dancing "I am free from kirti, I am free from name, fame, now I can do my bhajana peacefully, now I can chant the holy names peacefully."

So though name, fame follow a Vaishnava, they call it the Vaishnava's attachment to Lord Gauranga or Lakshmi pati, it is known as Vaishnava kirti, but still a devotee tries to avoid it as much as he can so that it doesn't interfere,? 31:08 totally reject this name, fame, disciples, but the preachers of the holy names sometimes have to accept these kind of opulences of the Lord's seva, but at the same time Bhaktisiddhanta Thakura says that in their heart, they have to be totally detached. In their heart of hearts they have to feel constantly that they are insignificant servants of all living entities. They're accepting this worship, they're accepting this name, fame, they're accepting these opulences just so they can engage it in the service of the Lord and spread the holy names of Nityananda, Gauranga, and Hare Krishna. In their heart of hearts they should not feel themselves the guru of any living entity. In their heart they should think that they are the servants of all living entities. Even sannyasi, tridandi sannyasa is taken to become a bigger servant, not a bigger master. Sarvabhama tells Gauranaga in Chaitanya Bhagavata, " sometimes when a sannyasa holds the tridandi stick, the sannyasa becomes so proud, oh now I am the controller of my disciples, now I am the big renunciant." But that defeats the whole purpose of taking sannyasa, because sannyasa means to become the lowest of the low, most humble servant. A sannyassa should feel that, " I have renounced the world to render menial service to all living entities. Even though sannyasa ashram is considered topmost of all ashrams, but ultimately, because sannyasa is the lowest servant of all. The grhasta also, he's also supremely glorious, the grhasta also should feel he is the lowest servant of the Vaishnavas. Vanaprastha, bramachari, all varnas and ashramas are meant to please Lord Gauranga Hari by the humble mentality. If one is proud in any ashrama one cannot achieve any success. So one should become bhakti, full of bhakti and humble and then the Lord will be happy.

Text 280

sei navadvipe hena prakasa haila

yata bhattacarya, --eka-jane na janila

Such supreme revelations in Maha-Prakasha lila they were performed by Lord Gauranga in the home of Shrivasa Thakura but the biggest scholars of the bhattacarya's in Navadvipe were not even aware about it, they did not even know about it, they did not even care about it, what a misfortune.

Text 281

duskrtira sarovare kabhu jala nahe

emana prakase ki vancita jiva haye

Those people who are duskrtira, who are puffed up because of their wealth, aristocracy, or their high learning, or those who are engaged in abominable behavior and have rejected the bhakti of the Lord. They are known as miscreants and they cannot get any water in the reservoir, the lake of these miscreants, the lake is always empty, they don't have any water there. Otherwise how can a living entity who is so near to the Lord in Navadvipa, how can the living entity be cheated out of seeing such great revelations. They missed the opportunity to see these revelations because they don't surrender to the Lord in humility.

Text 282

e-saba lilara kabhu nahi pariccheda

avirbhava, tirobhava --ei kahe veda

All these pastimes, this Maha-Prakasha lila and other pastimes of the Lord in Navadvipa, Puri, and Vrndavan, these pastimes they never end actually. They become manifest in front of our eyes and then they become unmanifest, but they are always going on, nitya-lila, eternally.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

The Lord in performing nitya-lila in two places, one in the eternal spiritual world in his abodes of Navadvipa, Vrndavan, Puri and one in these material worlds when he comes he brings his abodes with him and he performs his pastimes. But when he ends his pastimes in one universe they began in another universe, in the material world. Like it begins in another universe. Like Maha Prakasa lila, the Lord completed this Maha Prakasa five hundred years ago in the home of Shrivasa, instantly that lila started in some other universe. It's going on eternally, nitya-lila. Because they are billions and trillions of universes and each universe will experience at least in that one day of brahma once when Gauranga comes, Krishna comes once, that is going on in all the universes. So even the Lord is performing his pastimes eternally in the material creation as well as the spiritual creation. So it is just like the sun never dies, it just appears and disappears, similarly the pastimes are avirbhava and tirobhava of the Lord, they manifest and they disappear. It is still going on.

Text 283

adyapiha chaitanya e saba lila kare

yakhane yahare kare drsti-adhikare

Even today even this very moment, Lord Gauranga's pastimes are going on in Navadvipa, Puri, and Vrndavan. "Yakhane yahare kare drsti." As per one's adhikare, as per one's qualification Gauranga imparts them the "drsti," the vision to see those pastimes which are going on. Only when the Lord gives the mercy the devotee can see.

Text 284

sei dekhe, --ara dekhibare sakti nai

nirantara krida kare chaitanya gosani

Those who the Lord wants to show will see them, nobody else has the power to see them. The Lord is eternally performing his pastimes in all his holy abodes.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

There is a beautiful verse in Laghu Bhagavatamrita, Rupa Goswami verse 91, Bengali 39:09 Even today, if one of the dear devotees of the Lord, Lord Gauranga Krishna desires intensely with great greed, wants to see some particular pastimes, the merciful Lord immediately exhibits these pastimes for him, because they are eternal they are always present. The pastimes never die.

Text 285

ye mantrete ye vaishnava ista dhyana kare

sei mata dekhaye thakura visvambhare

A very beautiful verse, unfortunately some people are presently trying to stop the spreading of the Gauranga mantra, the Gaura-Gopala mantra which is now spreading in this world. It was revealed by Thakur Bhaktivinode in his Amrta-pravaha-bhasya. But here Vrndavan das Thakura is saying that, " that devotee, that Vaishnava who worships his ista deva, his worshippable Lord, by chanting his particular mantra. In that way Thakura Visvambhara, Lord Gauranga reveals himself to that devotee."

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

Even Prabhupada when he went to the west he even told the christians and the muslims that they can chant their own name of God. He did not force anyone, he told them gradually, especially the bona fide mantras of Vaishnavas. Hare Krishna maha mantra is the maturian mantra for seeing the pastimes of Radha-Krishna. The Gaura Gopala mantra, the Gauranga mantra is the mantra that provides us entry into the Ashta Kaliya Lila, the eightfold daily pastimes of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu. And also the Nityananda mantra is the mantra which provides entry into the most merciful pastimes of Lord Nityananda Balarama which are very accessible to the conditioned souls. So by chanting Nityananda's holy name, one enters into Nitai's lila, and then one gets the mercy of Nityananda Mahaprabhu's great associates like Devotees names 42:07, and all the great Bengali 42:20, the 12 cowherd boys of Vrndavan became the 12 confidential friends of Lord Nityananda. So by chanting the Nityananda mantra one gets entry into Nitai's bhajana, Nitai's worship and when Lord Nityananda Prabhu places his lotus feet on our head that how he always gives the mercy. He placed his lotus feet on the head of Jiva Goswami, he placed his lotus feet on the head of Krishadas Kaviraja Goswami, he placed his feet on the head of all the devotees, Raganatha dasa Goswami after the Bengali 43:00 festival. So he placed his lotus feet on the head of all the great devotees, and he granted them access to Gauranga’s association, Gauranga's pastimes, Gauranga's names, and also to Radha-Krishna's pastimes. So Nityananda's name is very crucial for each and every devotee because Narrotama das Thakura says, Bengali 43:35 hold the feet of Nitai with lot of, dukane dukane, means you grasp them very tightly, don't leave them in the sadhana stage, in the stage of performing your sadhana bhakti.

So how do you grasp the feet of Nitai? It is not possible theoretically, it is only possible by chanting his holy name and by hearing his pastimes in Chaitanya Bhagavata. So hold his lotus feet tightly in the beginning stages so that we don't get disturbed by our offenses, we don't fall down from bhakti. Nityananda's name will protect us, will reveal the doors of pure love of God, and then we can approach Gauranga's lotus feet which are the personification of the divine nectar, pure bhakti. Bengali 44:38 And one who approaches the Lotus feet of Gauranga by chanting his name, Gauranga Gauranga Gauranga Gauranga. Gauranga's name is so beautiful, so sublime. Lochana das says," Nitai-Gaura nama anandana dhama." The names of Nityananda and Gauranga are the abodes of all supreme bliss for the offensive souls. Bengali 45:08 Those who do not worship these holy names, these two holy names, they will have to see the face of Yamaraja, gauranteed. So one approaches Gauranga’s lotus feet and then one beholds Gauranga’s lotus feet and then one gets bhakti in the heart, and then one can achieve Radha-Krishna. Whatever mantra one chants, Vrndavan das Thakura is authorizing, “ye mantrete ye Vaishnava ista dhyana kare.” “Ista dhyane,” one’s worshippable Lord, and the worshippable Lord of all conditioned souls in the conditioned stage should be Nityananda and Gauranga, they should be the ista, they should be the ista because they are the only incarnations who can help us to advance in this degraded condition of kali-yuga. Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya says in the Shataka that “I have read all the Puranas, I have read all the Vedas but without you my dear Gauranga nobody can deliver me. No other incarnation has the power to deliver me because I am so sinful. No incarnation will even look at me. If Nrsinga comes he will just rip me apart, if Varaha comes he will just kill me. I am so sinful and I cannot even face any incarnation, I cannot even stand before any form of yours except Nityananda and Gauranga. If Krishna comes he will just cut my head with the Sudarsana Cakra. If Rama comes he will consider me as a big Ravana, a deceitful Ravana, so my dear Lord my only hope is in Nitai-Gauranga. No other incarnation can help me in this Bengali 47:10 stage. My dear Lord your holy names I will take shelter and then I will approach Radha-Krishna in Vrndavan by chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. So Prabhupada says in Chaitanya Charitamrita that a guru can choose a mantra for his disciples as per the disciples qualification to chant specific mantras. Here Vrndavan das Thakura is also saying the same thing, that every devotee has an ista mantra, ista Lord, and Gauranga should be the ista of 99.99% of the people in kali-yuga. So the Gauranga name, the Gauranga mantra, the Gaura Gopala mantra is very critical for this world to worship Gauranga, and that will give qualification to the majority of the population to actually become Krishna unaka, Krishna devotees of Radha-Krishna. And it is not, is somebody chants the Gauranga mantra the Lord will manifest himself, it is “sei mata dekhaye thakura visvambhare.” Some acaryas may not have preached the Gauranga mantra openly but they have chanted Gauranga’s name in their heart of hearts because they have a spiritual body in Navadvipa and Puri. They have two spiritual bodies in Navadvipa and Puri and one body in Vrndavana, so they need to worship Gauranga by the Gaura Gopala mantra in Navadvipa and Puri, and they need to worship Radha-Krishna by the Hare Krishna maha mantra. So they need the chant the mantras constantly in both their spiritual bodies. Some people say without, because they don’t have any information or knowledge, these acaryas they did not preach the Gauranga mantra, but how do you know an acarya? Bengali 49:10 How do you know a Vaishnava, a great acarya, a mahabhagavata what he’s chanting within his heart in his spiritual body. How can a conditioned soul judge an acarya. When Nityananda Prabhu’s order to always chant Gauranga’s name, how can you say that this acarya did not chant Gauranga’s name? How can an acarya not follow the order of Lord Nityananda Prabhu, it’s not possible. All the acaryas and all the associates although they may not have openly preached because the time was not right, because the Lord’s desire was not there, the Gauranga mantra. All the acaryas have chanted this mantra and along with the Hare Krishna maha mantra because Gauranga is the ista deva of all of us.

Text 286

dekhaiya apane sikhaya sabakare

e sakala katha bhai, sune pache are

In this was the Lord manifested himself and he taught all of his devotees through his personal example. Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu and the devotees they heard and learned from the Lord and they taught it to others what they have learned from the Lord.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

Lord Gauranga’s specific characteristic is that he not only preached the holy names but taught how to chant by his own personal example.

Text 287

“janma janma tomara paile mora sanga

toma sabara bhrtye o dekhibe mora ranga”

Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu told all the devotees assembled in Shrivasa’s home that, “ you will all have my association birth after birth, janma, janma, you will be in my pastimes, because my pastimes cannot be performed without you, because of your extreme love for me. It is a catalyst to my pastimes and even your servants, the servants of your servants will see my pastimes, they will join in my pastimes.”

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

This is the way to get entry into Gauranga’s pastimes, not by trying to be a direct servant of Gauranga but by trying to become the servant of the servants of Gauranga and Nityananda. That is how one can enter into these pastimes, because the Lord, we cannot even approach the Lord directly, the Lord will never even wish to see us because he is so busy performing his pastimes with his eternal associates. But he’s giving a benediction to the eternal associates, “you will always be with me, and your servants, and the servants of your servants will always enter into my pastimes.” So if your are recognized by the associates as their servants as the servants of the servants then we can enter, we can chant their holy names.

Text 288

apana galara mala dila sabakare

carvita tambula ajna haila sabare

The Lord removed his own garlands, personal fragrant garlands and he distributed them to all the devotees and then the greatest good fortune, the betel nuts directly chewed by the Lord, which are more ambrosial than Bengali 52:55 combined. Those chewed betel nuts were given to all the devotees.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

There was a pastime in Madhurya Ratnakara how Shrivasa got the chewed Betel nuts of Radhika and Ravacandra Kaviraja and he opened his eyes and he was in Radha-Krishna’s lila. He opened his eyes and those chewed betel nuts which he got in his meditation from Radharini were still in his clothe, and those betel nuts were so fragrant that the whole house became fragrant, and his wife, isvaya devi she came running and all the devotees decided to get those chewed betel nuts of Shrimati Radhika. So those same betel nuts, Radha and Krishna have combined as Gauranga so Gauranga’s betel nuts, chewed betel nuts have the love of Radha and Krishna. So the devotees who got those betel nuts were most fortunate souls, and one day we hope that they will give us some small particle of them, if we please them Gauranga’s devotees.

Text 289

mahanande khaye sabe harasita haiya

All those devotees ate those betel nut remnants, mahanande with great bliss and happiness, and they were meditating on the lotus face of the Lord, lotus mouth which is more effulgent and radiant and brilliant than millions of moons combined together. And they were thinking themselves as so fortunate, they are getting the nectar coming out from that lotus face of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu which is more mollifying and soothing than millions and millions of moons.

So the remnants which were taken by the devotees, those betel nuts, and that maha prasada of the Lord. One girl called Narayani who was the niece of Shrivasa she received those betel nuts when she was five years, around five years of age.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

And in her womb the power of the betel nuts, in her womb was born the author of this great book Shrila Vrndavan das Thakura, and Vrndavan das Thakura got the remnants, the most rare and confidential remnants of the Lord, the Maha Prakasa lila, he ate it when he was even in the womb of his mother, and that is why he got the sakti, the power to describe so beautifully the pastimes of the Lord in Chaitanya Bhagavata, no ordinary mortal can actually write such a scripture, only by eating the betel nuts in the womb of his mother. Just like Kavi Karnapura, he wrote great scriptures like Chaitanya Carita Mahakavya, Ananda Vrndavan Campu Vrndavan lila, and Chaitanya Carita Mahakavya of the Gauranga lila, and Gaura Ganodesa Dipika the lamp illuminating all the pastimes of Gauranga’s associates in Krishna lila and he wrote the Chaitanya Candrodaya, the beautiful pastime, the drama of Gauranga lila. He wrote so many beautiful exquisite scriptures because he >>>>>>>>>Audio fail 56.20

shrivasera bhratr-suta—balika ajnana

tahare bhojana-sesa prabhu kare dhana

The innocent young girl Narayani who was the daughter of Shrivasa’s brother became the recipient of the Maha Prasada of Lord Gauranga MahaPrabhu because the Lord knew his great associate Vrndavan das was going to appear from the womb of Narayani and glorify the pastimes for the benefit of the whole universe. So if Chaitanya Bhagavata was not written by Vrndavan das Thakura would not have gotten the remnants or if he wouldn’t have appeared in this world, what would we be talking about now? We would be talking gossip, we would be talking materialistic mundane subject matters, we would have wasted our life away in prajalpa, in mundane matters, and our human life would have been wasted without Chaitanya Bhagavata. So we should fall down at the feet of Vrndavan das and Narayani, the recipients of the Maha Prasada of the Lord.

Text 292

parama anande khaya prabhura prasada

sakala vaishnava tanre kare asirvada

As she joyfully was eating the Lord’s betel nuts and the Lord’s Maha Prasada, all the Vaishnavas blessed her, being such a small girl, all the Vaishnavas in Shrivasa’s home they blessed her that again gave her blessings and empowered Vrndavan das who writes Chaitanya Bhagavat because he wouldn’t have received those blessings

Text 293

dhanya dhanya ei se sevila narayana

balika-svabhave dhanya ihara jivana

Vrndavan das is talking about his own mother, he’s saying, “ dhanya, dhanya, se balika,” as a small girl she is glorious she is supremely glorious because she worshipped Narayana right from the childhood and she was so fortunate that she got the remnants, the Maha Prasada of the Lord at such a young age, and if the Lord once he said to Shrivasa, “see Shrivasa don’t have doubt in my mercy, I will make Narayani cry with love of God right now.” And he looked at Narayani and said,” why don’t you cry right now in Love of God,” and Narayani fell to the ground in trance and she started crying. So Lord Gauranga MahaPrabhu gave direct love to Narayani, the niece of Shrivasa.

Text 294

khaile prabhura ajna haya,--“narayani

krsnera paramanande kanda dekhi suni”

So because of her connection with Shrivasa, Narayani got the remnants of Lord Gauranga. And because of his connection with Narayani, Vrndavan das achieved his exalted position of being the Vyasa of Chaitanya lila, of Gauranga lila, Veda vyasa, Vyasadeva. Even Krishna das Kaviraja glorifies him as Vyasa, the original author of Gauranga’s pastimes. So by the order of the Lord, Narayani ate the remnants of Lord Gauranga MahaPrabhu and she became fully imbued and infused with paramanande, Krishna paramanande, pure love of Krishna, and she began crying in ecstasy and the Lord said, “ My dear Narayani why don’t you cry in love of Krishna.”

Text 295

hena prabhu caitanyera ajnara prabhava

‘krishna’ bali’ kande ati balika-svabhava

So this is the power of Lord Gauranga’s order, he ordered Narayani to cry in love of God and she instantly started crying, because no soul can ever disobey the order of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

He’s present in everyone’s heart, he can awaken that pure love in an instant, that pure love which we cannot achieve in millions of lives of sadhana bhakti, by practicing, it can be awakened simply by the desire and order of Lord Gauranga like it happened to Narayani.

Text 296

adyapiha vaishnava-mandale ei dhvani

“gaurangera avasesa-patra narayani”

So when they saw this great mercy of Gauranga to Narayani, all the Vaishnavas started loudly shouting, “Gaurangera avasesa-patra Narayani.” Narayani is the recipient of Gauranga’s remnants. ”Jaya Jay Narayani, Jaya Narayani, Jaya Jaya Narayani.” Chanting his glories.

Text 297

advaitera priya prabhu chaitanya thakura

Ithe advaitera bada mahima pracura

Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu is the thakura of Advaita, the dear most Lord of Advaita acarya and that’s why Advaita-acarya’s glories are being so magnified in this world because he had a such a great magnanimous Lord like Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

Text 300

caitanyera priya ati—thakura nitai

ei se mahima tana cari vede gai

The most dear Lord of Gauranga Mahaprabhu is Lord Nitai, Lord Nityananda Prabhu. The four Vedas try to sing the glories of Lord Nityananda but they feel they cannot even touch a drop of these glories.

Text 301

‘caitanyera bhakta’ hena—nahi yara nama

yadi sevya vastu,--tabu trnera samana

Even if, if a person is non, a designation, here Vrndavan das Thakura is saying here that every devotee has only one designation and that is to become Chaitanya bhakta or Gauranga bhakta. If a person does not have this designation, this is the real designation of the soul, if a person does not have this designation even if that person has served millions of people in this world, but he or she is no better than the straw on the street.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

Lord Nityananda is himself the Supreme Lord and he has millions of servants, but still he identifies himself as Chaitanya bhakta, Gauranga bhakta. So if an ordinary soul does not identify oneself as Gauranga bhakta then he is just like a straw, an insignificant straw.

Text 302

nityananda kahe,--‘muni caitanyera dasa’

aharnisa ara prabhu na kare prakasa

Nityananda 24 hours day and night his only words that came from his mouth were, “I am Gauranga das, Iam Chaitanya das.” This position was his life and soul and he did not say anything else contrary to this statement, anytime, anywhere.

Text 303

tahana krpaya haya caitanyete rati

nityananda bhajile apad nahi kati

People in kali-yuga have so many difficulties in their life, and distresses and problems in their life. Vrndavan das Thakura is giving an easy formula to become free from all kinds of miseries and distress. He says that, “tahana, by the mercy of Nityananda one attains attachment to Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu.” Caitanyete rati, one attains Caitanyete rati or attachment to Lord Chaitanya. Simply by worshipping Lord Nityananda by chanting his holy names, by hearing his pastimes, one will not face danger anywhere in life.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

Just like you see the great tsunami waves, we are chanting the glories of Nityananda in our humble ashram, which is very close to the sea, but the tsunami waves came eighteen miles to the ocean just near to this place, but they receded away, they couldn’t touch the shore because, “ nityananda bhajile apad nahi kati,” when one glorifies Lord Nityananda and his holy names one will not face any danger anywhere, anytime. Nitai will protect us, forever, in birth and death.

Text 304

amara prabhura prabhu gauranga-sundara

e bada bharasa citte dhari nirantara

These are the famous words of Chaitanya Bhagavata in which he describes the mood of Lord Nitai, Lord Nityananda. He says that, “amara prabhura prabhu,” Vrndavan das Thakura is saying this statement, he says that, ”the Lord of my Lord is Gauranga-sundara.”

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

Who is the Lord of Vrndavan das? The Lord of Vrndavan das is Lord Nityananda. The Lord of my Lord is Lord Gauranga-sundara, that is the mood of Vrndavan das while writing Chaitanya Bhagavata. He doesn’t even approach Lord Gauranga directly, he says, “amara prabhura prabhu gauranga-sundara.” He’s approaching Lord Gauranga through Nitai, through Lord Nityananda. “e bada bharasa citte dhari nirantara,” he has a very strong faith and conviction, constantly that Lord Nityananda is the master of my, my master Lord Nityananda is the servant of my Lord Gauranga.

Text 305

dharani-dharendra nityanandera carana

deha’ prabhu gauracandra amare sarana

We have 15 verses left in this chapter, so here Vrndavan das Thakura is praying; all the devotees have asked their own benedictions to Lord Gauranga in the Maha-Prakasa lila, now Vrndavan das Thakura wants to ask his benediction because he has described this Maha-Prakasa lila, so he wants to take the liberty, he wants to beg Lord Gauranga for one benediction, he’s the author of these pastimes, he says that, “ O my dear Lord Gaurangacandra Prabhu, please give me shelter, constant shelter of the lotus feet of dharani-dharendra, Lord Nityananda Prabhu, who is upholding all of the millions of universes, and thousands and millions of hoods, please give me the shelter and Lord Nityananda’s lotus feet.”

Text 306

balarama-prite gai chaitanya-carita

kare balarama prabhu jagatera hita

I am singing this, Chaitanya-Carita, this Chaitanya Bhagavata, this Gauranga lila, I am singing for satisfying my Lord Balarama, Nityananda Balarama, for his pleasure I am singing these pastimes, for I know if he will be pleased, then Gauranga will be pleased, Radha-Krishna will be pleased. Lord Balarama-Nityananda, Lord Balarama thought that when Krishna came as Gauranga came in kali-yuga, Lord Balarama thought that I will advent in kali-yuga as an avadhuta, because my only business will be to, “jagatera hita,” will be to work for the welfare of this world, by giving them the holy name of Lord Gauranga. So when Lord Balarama came as Lord Nityananda in kali-yuga, his only business was to benedict and benefit the living entities, very very merciful incarnation of Lord Balarama, Lord Nitai, Nityananda himself is Balarama.

Text 307

caitanyera dasya bai nitai na jane

caitanyera dasya nityananda kare dane

Lord Nityananda does not know anything except servitorship to Lord Gauranga. “Caitanyera dasya, Caitanyera dasya,” and it is only Lord Nityananda Prabhu who can grant us this Gauranga dasya, it is only by his mercy that we can get it.

Commentary Swami Gaurangapada:

In Navadvipa Dhama Mahatyma, it is described that Gauranga, “dasya rasa hare prarakasa.” In Gauranga’s pastimes one achieves a mood of servitorship of Gauranga, one achieves all one’s rasas, mellows with Radha and Krishna automatically, effortlessly. That is why the mercy of Nityananda is the most crucial, one has to get the mercy of Nityananda to become a Gauranga das, and one becomes Gauranga das one automatically becomes Radha-Krishna das.

Text 308

nityananda-krpaya se gauracandra cini

nityananda-prasade se bhakti-tattva jani

Only by the mercy of Lord Nityananda can one understand Lord Gaurangacandra in truth, there is no other way, no other way, no other way. Only by the mercy, prasada of Nityananda can one understand bhakti-tattva. Bhakti-tattva is covered with thorns even in kali-yuga. Bhakti is the only path in kali-yuga but even bhakti is covered with thorns, so many obstacles, so many deviations. So if one wants real bhakti one has to become a staunch devotee of Lord Nityananda, then one will not be distracted or diverted from the pure bhakti path.

Text 309

sarva vaisnavera priya nityananda-raya

sabe nityananda-sthane bhakti-pada paya

Lord Nityananda is dear to one and all, all the Vaishnavas in creation because nobody goes empty handed from Nityananda Prabhu’s lotus feet. Every one, each and every devotee gets bhakti-pada, bhakti-pada, the eternal platform of pure bhakti, pure devotion is awarded by Lord Nityananda to each and every one who approaches him.

Text 310

kona pake yadi kare nityananda hela

apane chaitanya bale, --‘sei jana gela’

Beautiful verse, beautiful rhyming by Vrndavan das. He says that if somehow or the other even unknowingly disrespects Lord Nityananda Prabhu, even just a little bit, then Gauranga himself declares, “sei jana gela,” that person is gone, that person is finished, he is destroyed forever, he will never get my mercy, such a person who disrespects Nityananda for even one moment.

Text 311

adi-deva mahayogi isvara vaishnava

mahimara anta inha na janaye saba

Even the Lord, “adi-deva mahayogi isvara vaishnava,” mahayogi adi-deva is the name of Lord Shiva. Even Shiva being the greatest of all Vaishnavas, he cannot find an end to the glories of Lord Nityananda Balarama, he cannot even touch a drop of his glories.

Text 312

kahare na kare ninda, ‘krishna krishna’ bale

ajaye chaitanya sei jinibeka hele

Now the formula for achieving success to achieve Krishna is given by Vrndavan das Thakura, he says, “ You do not criticize anyone in your life, kahare na kare ninda, please do not even criticize a single soul, and just chant the name of Krishna, Krishna, Gauranga, Nityananda, just chant their holy names and by this action you can conquer ajaye ajaye.” Ajaye is the name of Lord Garuanga it means nobody can win over him, but you can win over him, you can win over the Lord Gauranga and Lord Krishna if you do not criticize any soul in this world and if you simply chant his holy names constantly.

Text 313

nindaya nahika labhya’ –sarva sastre kaya

sabara sammana bhagavata-dharma haya

All the scriptures declare that you will not be able to achieve anything by criticizing anyone in this world. Just like you spit on the air. You spit in the air in the sky, what will happen? The spit will fall on you. Similarly by criticizing others your mouth is becoming foul, you cannot change anyone in this world, we cannot change anyone, so why should we blaspheme anyone, why should we criticize anyone. Bhagavata dharma declares, “ give respect to all living entities in creation, don’t offend any living entity, don’t criticize any living entity.” That is the process of achieving success Bengali 74:40

And then one will achieve Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

Text 314

madhya-khanda-katha yena amrtera khanda

maha-nimba-hena vase yateka pasanda

The topics of Madya-khanda are like khanda, the abode of amrtera, nectar, but unfortunately the pasanda, the atheistic sinful people, they consider these topics like bitter neem juice.

Commentary by Swami Gaurangapada:

They cannot read these topics, they hate to even hear these topics, when they hear the madhya-khanda of Chaitanya Bhagavata they run away, they run like black plague. They run away far, they think these same nectarean topics which are the life and soul of the devotees, they become like bitter juice, neem juice, for those who are against the path of devotion. Those who are atheists and those who are very sinful, they don’t have enough piety to understand

Text 315

If someone considers the condensed form of molasses, the sugar candy, if someone thinks the sugar candy is like bitter neem juice, then it is his greatest misfortune, what can be done. But just by saying, “this is bitter, this is bitter, this is bitter,” the sugar candy does not become bitter. The sugar candy always remains sweet and it can be the sweetness can be relished by those who have faith in the sugar candy, those who believe, those who approach the sugar candy in the proper consciousness.

Text 316

ei mata caitanyera parananda-yasa

In that way Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s pastimes and his holy names are “parananda” have the supreme relationship and happiness and his fame are full with bliss and nectar. Those who do not achieve happiness by hearing these pastimes, these holy names, they are actually become enveloped in the topmost misfortune and they fall down from their position in this human form of life.

Text 317

sannyasi o yadi nahi mane gauracandra

janiha se khala jana janma janma andha

This is the greatest statement, strong statement given by Vrndavan das Thakura that, “ even if the greatest sannyasi in this world, if he takes sannyasi and he renounces the whole world, but if he does not accept Lord Gaurangacandra as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. They are so many ways of rejecting Gaurangacandra, even if one becomes a sannyasi and one takes up preaching and has thousands of disciples, but if one does is renounced but does not accept Gaurangacandra then such a person becomes crooked and decietful person and he will be born blind birth after birth. “Janma janma andha khala,” he’s only cheating the people.

Text 318

Because even if a bird unknowingly hears or chants Gauranga’s name, that bird will certainly attain, “satya satya” 100% that bird will attain Gauranga’s abode. That bird doesn’t even have to take a human form of life, directly from the bird species the bird will go back to Gauranga’s abode, eternal abode from there there is no return, eternal bliss.

Text 319

All glories, all glories to Gaurachandra who is the life and soul of Lord Nityananda Prabhu. My dear Gauranga I ask only this benediction let Nityananda become the treasure of my life, my very life breath. Let Nityananda’s name and his glories become the only solace, the only shelter for me.
