Title: Why Nityananda Gauranga has no offenses?

User: Swami Gaurangapada Date: 2005-03-24 08:16:34

Q. If Lord Gauranga is the combined form of Shri Shri Radha Krishna Themselves, can you explain me in brief why there are offenses considered in the Holy Names, Pastimes and Abodes of Shri Shri Radha Krishna and no offenses in the Holy Names, Pastimes and Abodes of Shri Shri Nityananda Gauranga?

A. by Swami Gaurangapada:

The reply is given by Shrila Sacchidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura is Jaiva Dharma which I will try to explain and summarize.

The Supreme Ultimate Personality of Godhead who is second to none is Lord Gauranga Krishna. The basic characteristic of Lord Gauranga Krishna is Madhura Rasa for which He is sweetest of the sweet in creation. The Madhura Rasa in turn is characterized by two specific attritibutes: (1) Madhurya or Ambrosial enchanting sweetness and (2) Audarya or the Most advanced benevolence or magnanimity.

Both of these characteristics are essential in God, as God cannot be only sweet without the quality of distributing that sweetness to His part and parcels. When the quality of madhurya (sweetness) dominates and audarya (mercy) is subordinate, the form of that Supreme Personality of Godhead is Krishna. When the audarya (mercy) dominates and madhurya (sweetness) is subordinate, the same Personality of Godhead manifests the form of Gauranga. Please remember that both the forms are the original and supreme forms of the same Lord and there is nothing in creation higher than these two forms. The Lord can be thus be addressed perfectly with the Name Gauranga-Krishna. Some do not understand why we address the Lord as Lord Gauranga Krishna but this is actually the reason.

Please remember in this whole discussion that the form of Lord Krishna fully possesses mercy or audarya and the form of Lord Gauranga fully possesses madhurya or sweetness but is only the question of which characteristic is prominent in which form.

Now over to the question. For the Lord to be sweetness personified which is relished by His most intimate devotees, the Lord needs to restrict entry to only the most qualified souls into His madhurya pastimes so that there is no disturbance created in His confidential pastimes. This is the form of Lord Krishna and that is why Lord Krishna has kept the barrier of the 10 offenses in the chanting of His Holy Names, 64 offenses in His worship, and 10 offenses in residence in His Abode of Shri Vrindavana Dhama.

After this Lord Krishna thought, "What is the use of possessing this extraordinary sweetness if I do not give an opportunity for all my part and parcels (souls) including the eternally conditioned souls to relish this sweetness? Till now I have made My Holy Names, Pastimes and Abodes accessible to only the eternally liberated souls. Now I want to give the very same treasure to the eternally conditioned (nitya baddha) souls. And no one else in creation can give this treasure except Me."

Thinking like this the Lord took the most important singular decision in creation and that is to manifest the supreme form of Gauranga in which mercy will be even more predominant than sweetness. This form was manifested by Lord Krishna simply for the purpose of magnanimously distributing His own sweetness to one and all, even those who do not ask for it. And that is why the Lord in His form of Lord Gauranga deliberately removed all the obstacles in approaching Him which are basically the 10 offenses in the chanting of His Holy Names.

If the 10 offenses would be also considered in the Holy Names, Pastimes and Abodes of Lord Gauranga, then the very purpose of Lord Krishna in manifesting the freely distributing form of Lord Gauranga would have been defeated. And since Krishna and Gauranga are the Holy Names of the same person, so it became very easy to approach the Holy Name of Krishna through the offenseless and conditionless Holy Name of Gauranga.

Thus by manifesting the Holy Names, Pastimes and Abodes of Lord Gauranga, Lord Krishna has granted access to all the eternally conditioned souls in the material creation, who are originally manifested in the marginal (tatastha) line between the spiritual and material worlds, and thus who have never seen the Lord face to face nor have entered the spiritual planets. Thus Lord Gauranga and His Holy Name is the ultimate limit of all magnanimity. So one who does know about Lord Gauranga and the chanting of His Holy Name is missing the most rarest opportunity in creation and cannot be extricated from the cycle of birth and death for the next trillions of milleniums according to Shrila Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami.
