Three Constituents of Fire

Post Author: Swami Gaurangapada    Date: 2007-11-12 04:59:39
Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Shri Guru Parampara! Pranams! There's an old saying: "you can't start a fire without a spark." But really, you need more than a spark. You need fuel and oxygen, too. In fact, you need fuel and oxygen, in addition to heat, to get even a spark.

In the same way, the Vedas describe that the three main facilitators of the great forest fire of material existence which has been burning in our hearts from time immemorial are lust, anger and greed. If we try to gradually reduce and eradicate them by the chanting of the Holy Names of Nityananda, Gauranga and Hare Krishna, then we become eligible for liberation and entry into the spiritual world. The more we indulge in them, we end up preparing the soul for transmigration into the lower painful species of life.

In this world, lust is considered a virtue and the more lusty one is, one becomes more famous. But at the time of death, we will realize that our lust will only take us to into oblivion in the 8.4 million species of life.

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

@ Bhakta Igor

Yes, Igor. Also the verse...kaama esha krodha esha, rajo guna samudbhavah...is relevant in this regard. Lust, greed and anger are three sticks which are sole causes of friction in this material world. And they arise due to our false ego.

@ Gouranga dasa

Thanks for becoming encouraged. Naam Bhajana is like heavy torrential rainfall which can totally extinguish the burning fire of material existence.

@ Jagannatha Gauranga dasa

Yes, Maya, the illusory energy of the Lord, makes us imagine that the unnatural activities are our natural activities and vice versa and we become rivetted to the bodily conception of life.

1. One should try to absorb onself fully in Naam Bhajana (Japa and Sankirtana) and gradually try to imbibe the mood of humility as described in the verse...trinad api sunichena...And when one becomes conscious that one's mind is drifting towards subtle lust, anger and greed (likes the ones you have described), one should begin loud chanting and reading or hearing the Lord's glories and try one's best to stop the mind from doing this on the subtle level. In this way, one will gradually get over the subtle anarthas. One should not worry too much of these subtle anarthas because the Holy Names of Nityananda, Gauranga and Hare Krishna will eradicate lust, anger and greed permanently from the roots if practiced with a humble mood.

2. Lust, anger and greed do exist in their eternal pristinely pure forms in Goloka solely for the increasing the pleasure of the Lord and are displayed by the Gopies and Mother Yashoda sometimes for the enjoyment of the Lord.

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krsna
All glories to Swami Gaurangapada! All glories to Srilla Ptabhupada!

In Bhagavad Gita 3.29. Lord Sri Krsna is saying
avrtam jnanam etena
jnanino nitya-vairina
kama-rupena kaunteya
duspuren analena ca

"Thus the wise living entity's pure consciousness becomes covered by his eternal enemy in the form of lust, which is never satisfied and which burns like fire."

You said it wonderfully, Gurudeva in your post "If we try to gradually reduce and eradicate them by the chanting of the Holy Names of Nityananda, Gauranga and Hare Krishna, then we become eligible for liberation and entry into the spiritual world."
So true.

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krsna
Thank you Gurudeva for your answers.
Regarding this topic:
1. It seems that Lust, greed and anger also exist on more subtle level. To recognize gross lust, greed and anger is easy, but how to deal with them on subtle level? For example - subtle lust - thinking or fantasing about opposite sex, greed - desire to accumulate many things in name of service, but more or less for own enjoyment, anger - person may become anger when corrected by more advanced devotees, or when pride is hurt...etc There seems to be many layers of lust, greed and anger from gross to most subtle?

2. Does lust, greed and anger exist in spiritual world? (in it's original form) or they are manifest only within Lord's prakrita-lila, when Lord advent in material world? (examples - intense desire of gopis in Vraja, fighting with demons etc)

I am encouraged, Thank you!

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

This is a very intelligent way to view things. The last paragraph really makes one realize how backwards and perverted this material world is. To live here one must ignore the natural tendencies of the soul and engage in unnatural activities. I am glad that the Lord has blessed us with your pure moonlike presence to give us sufficient light on our path back to Godhead.
