The Fours Orders

Q.  Is there a record of the mantrarajas Nityananda and Gauranga being  passed down (not necessarily during diksa) until present? Did Shrila Bhaktivinoda or Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta receive them?
Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:

My Gurudeva at the time of Diksha told me the glories of the Nityananda and Gauranga Mantrarajas along with the glories of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra and said that he had heard these two nectarean Holy Names from his Gurudeva Shri Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada along with the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. So I received the spiritual sound vibration of the Holy Names of Nityananda and Gauranga also through the disciplic succession along with Diksha in the Hare Krishna Mahamantra and the Gayatri mantras.

As described in the Shri Chaitanya Charitamrita, the potency of the Holy Names may be transferred through Shiksha also..diksha vidhi purascharya apeksha na kare...the Holy Names do not necessarily depend upon official initiation but They deliver anyone who hears Them from a bonafide source and chants Them with his or her tongue. Official initiation speedens up the process of deliverance but the deliverance process of the Holy Names does not mandatorily depend on official initiation.

(1) My merciful Gurudeva then specifically instructed me to spread Gaura Naam far and wide while quoting the verse...prithvite yata ache nagaradi grama, sarvatra prachara haibe more naam...Lord Gauranga said, "My Holy Name will spread in all the villages, cities and towns of this world" and told me to give Gaura Naam to one and all without discrimination along with Hari Naam. I took this instruction very seriously, as my life and soul. I could understand that since my Gurudeva was a scholar in the Bengali Holy Books written by Saccidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura, he was fully aware of the supreme importance of Gaura Naam in Kali Yuga. It is only by his causeless mercy that the glories of Gaura Naam in the scriptures were revealed to my lowly self.

(2) Shrila Prabhupada said in Shri Chaitanya Charitamrita said neophyte students should not directly indulge in chanting of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra but instead should take full shelter of Nitai Gaura Naam first and that chanting of the Holy Name of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is even more essential than the chanting of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra.

(3) Shri Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada instructed that chanting of Nityananda Gauranga Naam is the most beneficial thing for the offensive souls of this world and in the conditioned (anartha yukta) stage, Nityananda Gauranga Naam is the only remedy.

(4) And Seventh Goswami Shrila Saccidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura clearly stated that without Gauranga Naam, no souls in Kali Yuga can be delivered.

So to practically implement the above instructions of these four beloved Gurus of mine, I am trying to spread Nityananda Gauranga Naam with full enthusiasm and imparting Diksha in These two most merciful Holy Names (Mantrarajas) in Kali Yuga.

There is no record of the Gayatri Mantras being given by any Guru before Shri Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada neither there is record of his receiving the Gayatri Mantras from Shrila Gaura Kishore Dasa Babaji. He received Hari Naam Diksha from Shrila Gaura Kishore Dasa babaji who gave him the name Shri Varshabhanavi-devi dayita dasa. But Shri Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada introduced the Gayatri Mantra Diksha specifially to establish the Daivi Varnashrama system which was an order to him from His Divine Grace Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakura and also to demonstrate that Vaishnavism includes Brahminism. He did not manufacture his own Gayatri Mantras but they were all bonafide Krishna Mantras from the scriptures and were chanted by many previous Acharyas so he just implemented them and no one can say that he compromised the the Hare Krishna Mahamantra by giving Gayati Mantra Diksha as he always stressed that Naam Diksha is the highest attainment.

Sometimes previous Acharyas may inspire some followers to reveal some confidential truths which they may have written in their writings but they may have not necesarily have practically preached it themselves. As per Jaiva Dharma, one can understand that all associates of the Lord in the eternal Navadvipa worship Him by chanting the Gauranga Mantra and all associates in Vrindavana by chanting Hari Naam. That is why the eternal associates of the Lord need not necessarily have to receive the Mantras as they are already chanting them in their siddha deha in Goloka but they do it to set an example for us.

The ultimate evidence in Shri Chaitanya Charitamrita that Shrila Shivananda Sena, the rasika associate of Lord Gauranga, was chanting the four-syllable Gauranga (Gaura Gopala) Mantra and that Shrila Prabhupada said that chanting of Gauranga and Hare Krishna is on the same level, should be enough to show us that the chanting and diksha in the Gauranga Mantra is an authorized process and has been practiced by our previous Acharyas. No Acharya would neglect the order of the original Guru Lord Nityananda, so it is certainly sure that all Acharyas were constanty chanting the Holy Name of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

Q. I had been chanting 32 rounds of the mahamantra for about a year, but due to a lot of opposing arguments as to my chanting, I decided to go down to 16 about two weeks ago. It's curious that when I was chanting 32 rounds I would finish very early and now sometimes it takes me until the night to finish 16 rounds.
Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:

Those who oppose the increase of quantity and quality of our Naam Bhajan are not our real friends. Please read my book Maha Mantra Yoga about the paramount importance of chanting 100,000 Holy Names daily to make a certain success of this human form of life.

Q. I also chanted the mantrarajas for a few days, but committed the mistake of telling others who don't understand about it. One said I could be labeled a puffed-up innovator and that I could chant the names of Gaura-Nitai all day but not on my beads. According to him, there was no evidence of any acarya doing that.
Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:

Actually we are humble (not puffed-up) since we are accepting that we are full of offenses, and that is why are taking shelter of the Nityananda and Gauranga Mantrarajas in addition of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra.

It does not sound logical, why one can chant Nityananda Gauranga Naam without beads but not on Tulasi beads. Lords Nityananda Gauranga are the source of Vishnu Tattva so Tulasidevi constantly worships Them. Is it a crime to chant Their divine Holy Name of Tulasi beads? Is Tulasi devi offended that one chants the Holy Names of her Masters on her beads? It does not make sense to me why the Holy Names of Nityananda and Gauranga should not be chanted on Tulasi beads when we can offer Tulasi leaves to Their lotus feet and when we can chant the Names and Mantras of other expansions and incarnations of Them like Lord Raam, Lord Nrisingha etc. on Tulasi beads.

There are many scriptural evidences of the Japa of Gauranga Naam. In the Shri Navadvipa Dhama Mahatmya, the seven sages came to Navadvipa on the order of Lord Brahma and chanting Gaura Naam day and night without eating anything and achieved the direct audience of Lord Gauranga...kichu naahi khaaya, nidraa naahi jaaya, gaura naam kare JAPA.

There are many other great acharyas like Markandeya, Parvati, Narada, Suvarna Sena who have received the Gauranga Mantra and chanted the Gauranga Mantra in japa.

Lord Nityananda Prabhu Himself constantly chanting the Name of Gauranga in japa as described in Shri Chaitanya Bhagavata. It is clearly said no other Name comes out from His Holy mount.

Shrila Haridasa Thakura chanted Gaura Naam in japa with his beads in hand at the time of holy disappearance.

It is described in Shri Chaitanya Charitamrita that Shrila Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya would constantly chant and meditate on Gaura Naam. ei japa...again the japa word is used here.

There are so many other Acharyas who have continuously chanted Nityananda and Gauranga Naam and in no scripture japa of These two Mantras have been prohibited.

If japa can be done of the Mantras of other incarnations like Lord Raam, Lord Nrisingha etc. why can't we do japa of the most principle Mantras of Lord Gauranga who is Lord Krishna Himself, the source of all incarnations. Why would Lord Gauranga say that my Name should spread in all the town and villages of this world if He did not want His Holy Name to be chanted in japa?

Q. My wife and daughter have also experienced chanting the mantrarajas and have found it very pleasing. However, some discouraged us from doing that.
Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:

Please chant the Nityananda and Gauranga Mantrarajas along with the Hare Krishna Mahamantra for your own spiritual advancement and bhajan. The verdict of the Acharyas is very clear for chanting Nityananda Gauranga Naam in addition to the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. So one should remain satisfied with this Acharya Vani and perform of our own bhajan instead of going and asking the whole world about it where one may get contradictory answers since the instructions of the Acharyas are confidential and everyone may not be fully aware of their existence and importance.

Q. Some say I should not impose a quota on my rounds because then I don't chant from the heart but simply try to satisfy a prescribed sumber of rounds.
Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:

From quantity, quality will come, if we simply adhere to the qauntity day after day, come what may. That is why Naam Acharya Shrila Haridasa Thakura and the Six Goswamis gave so much importance to sankhya (number) of rounds daily...sankhya purvaka naam gaan natibhih...sankhya kirtana ei maha-yagya manye...ami dikshita prati dine.

Q. Also, a few years ago I came across the reference in Hari Bhakti Vilasa about mental japa by reading your website. I have been discouraged from chanting mentally, which is my preferred method of doing japa. I do my japa loudly now but do miss mental japa. Why if the sastra say it is the best method so many devotees are against it? Is this predominant in the Gaudiya line?
Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:

Vaachika (loud) japa, Upaanshu (soft) japa and Manasika (mental) japa are all three bonafide methods to chant the Names in Japa and one should adopt that method which enables us to focus and meditate more better on the meanings of Naam while chanting. But one should make it a point that one loudly sings or chants the Holy Names daily at least for some time to eradicate the inertia ro lack of taste for the Holy Names and Pastimes of the Lord.
