Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krsna!
Jaya Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga!

Dear Swami Gaurangapada,
please accept my humble obiesances.

Where I live there is no indian grocery store and the supermarkets sell limited products for indian cooking. For dahl I have only found green split peas, yellow split peas, and red and (rarely) brown lentils.

I have been using red lentils for dahl soups as they cook very quickly and conveniently. And are affordable.
Basically each day I take vegetables and rice, with spiced dahl and yoghurt. Very simple eating each day.

Just today I downloaded the 'Devotee Cookbook' from ... cipes.html: ""

I read in it that red lentils are not taken by devotees. I had not heard this before.
Is this correct? And is avoidance of red lentils essential in making preparations for Lords Nityananda-Gauranga?

I desire to eat the correct diet Maharaja, could you please instruct me what to do.

                                                          y.s. Nava.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Guru Parampara!  Pranams and  Blessings! Yes, when the sage's wife threw the piece of meat out of the window fearing her husband, the bones in the meat became garlic, the meat became onions and the blood is said to have become the red lentils. This event is somewhere in the Rig Veda though I do not know of the exact reference. What is certain is that traditionally in Gaudiya Math, red lentils are not cooked or offered to the Lord. Some devotees who cannot follow avoid them fully, use them sparingly.

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Are red lentils the same thing as masoor dal? Just wondering. I usually cook only toor dal.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Guru Parampara!  Pranams and  Blessings!

@Amiya: Red carrots are originally a kind of hybrid vegetable i.e. they were crossed to form the red colouration for the King of Holland, an Orangeman in the 16th century. So traditionally in Gaudiya Math, carrots are not cooked and offered to the Lord and neither in the Shri Jagannatha temple here in Puri Dhaam. Shrila Prabhupada allowed them as they do not fall in the same category as meat, onions, garlic and red lentils.

@Neil: Yes, red lentils are known as masoor dal. All other dals including toor, mung, urad etc. are perfectly allowed to be cooked, offered to the Lord and eaten by us.
