Title: Lord Nityananda and Madhurya Rasa User: Swami Gaurangapada Date: 2007-04-21 22:20:11
Q. Also, those who desire the moods of dasya-rasa, sakha-rasa and vatsalya-rasa take shelter of Nitynanda prabhu as guru-tattva and those in the mood of madhurya-rasa take shelter of Nitynanda's shakti, Srimati Jahnava devi. Last Wednesday we were discussing this and it was mentioned that Gadadhara is also guru-tattva for this rasa. Is it the proper understanding that Jahnava devi is in the mood of Radha and the gopis of Vrindavan and Gadadhara is in the mood of Rukmini and the queens of Dwarka?
Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:
Please give me a quotation from the Acharyas or Scriptures which states that one should not take shelter of Lord Nityananda Prabhu if one is in the mood of madhurya rasa and take shelter of only His eternal consort Shrimati Jahnava devi. This is a misconception being spread widely in the name of madhurya rasa and it minimizes the supreme mercy of Lord Nityananda Prabhu. Was the prayojana acharya and greatest devotee in madhurya rasa Shrila Raghunatha Dasa Goswami a fool when he accepted shelter at the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda? And what about Shrila Jiva Goswami and Shrila Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami who attained Shri Vrindavana Dhaam and Shri Shri Radha Krishna by the exclusive order and mercy of Lord Nityananda? Anyone who wants to bypass or minimize Lord Nityananda's mercy and attain Shri Shri Radha Krishna will get only zero, absolutely nothing. Bypassing or minimizing Lord Nityananda's mercy in the name of madhurya rasa is very dangerous and is precisely what is known as Sahajiyaism or cheap showbottle devotion.
Shrila Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya states in his 108 Names of Lord Nityananda that Lord Nityananda grants us the Mantra to worship Shrimati Radharani in madhurya rasa...radhika-mantra-do...
Shrila Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami has said in Shri Chaitanya Charitamrita...jaya jaya nityaananda charanaarvinda, jaha haite aami painu shri radha govinda..."All glories to Lord Nityananda Prabhu because by the causeless mercy of His lotus feet I have attained Shri Shri Radha Govinda in Shri Vrindavana Dhaam."
"All glory, all glory to Lord Nityananda Balarama, by whose mercy I have attained shelter in the transcendental abode of Vrndavana. All glory, all glory to the merciful Lord Nityananda, by whose mercy I have attained shelter of Sri Rupa and Sanatana. By His mercy, I have attained the shelter of the great Sri Raghunatha dasa Gosvami, and by His mercy I have found the refuge of Sri Svarupa Damodara. By the mercy of Sanatana Gosvami I have learned the final conclusions of devotional service, and by the grace of Sri Rupa Gosvami I have tasted the highest nectar of devotional service. All glory, all glory to the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda, by whose mercy I have attained Sri Radha-Govinda." (Cc. Adi. 5.200-204)
Shrila Narottama Dasa Thakura states: heno nitai vine bhai, radha krishna paite nai..."Without Lord Nityanananda's mercy, no one will attain Shri Shri Radha Krishna." And so on...there are hundreds of other quotes in this regard.
It is only by the causeless mercy of Lord Nityananda Prabhu that one attains shelter of Shrimati Ananga Manjari (younger sister of Shrimati Radhika) who is Shrimati Jahnava Thakurani in Gauranga's pastimes. So even to attain Shrimati Jahnavadevi's mercy, we still require the causeless of Lord Nityananda Prabhu. So madhurya rasa is impossible without the causeless mercy of Lord Nitai.
It is completely wrong and speculative to say Shri Gadadhara Pandita is in the mood of Rukmini or the the Dvaraka queens. Shri Gadadhara Pandita is Shrimati Radha Herself (the ultimate personification of Madhurya Rasa) beyond doubt as it is proved in the scriptures. And Shrimati Jahnava Thakurani is Shrimati Ananga Manjari, the younger sister of Shrimati Radhika. So by the mercy of the Manjari Gopies, one can approach Shrimati Radha, but the mercy of the Manjari Gopies can only be attained by the causeless mercy of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu which in turn can only be attained if one receives the magnanimous mercy of Lord Nityananda Prabhu. So I hope these speculations have been eradicated.
