Dear Swami Gaurangapada,
Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Please accept my humble obeisances at Your Lotus Feet.

i am posting here one question of a devotee friend of mine, which i have been asked to answer. Please, could You give Your illuminating answer   , so that my friend gets full benefit:

Nam is prema-vidhata, giver of prem. But due to offenses, premnam is not coming.
Goura-Nam is not considering offenses. We are chanting Goura-Nam. Why is prema not coming?

Thank You very much.

Title: My answer attempt to Gaura Naam - Prema is not coming
User: Matus    Date: 2007-04-24 12:51:13

Dear Swami Gaurangapada Maharaja, dear devotees
Please accept my humble obeisances.

In connection to my previous post about Gaura Naam, i am allowing myself to post here also my sincere attempt to give some reasonable answer. i am doing it so that Gurudeva may point out the lacks, deficiencies and faults, out of which we all can learn and also to possibly open up a space for spiritual discource about our experience and understanding in this regard.

Actually there are two points to be considered in relation to Your question:

1.) Are You taking full shelter of Nityananda Gauranga Naam? Full shelter means to chant some thousands of times the Holy Names of Nityananda Gauranga daily (japa or kirtan). Of course, it should be a resonable quantity if one wants to feel the stirrings of love.

2.) No Gauranga without Nityananda and Nityananda Naam. Only through Nityananda Bhakti one can enter into Gaura Naam, Gaura Bhakti and Harinaam, Radha-Krishna Bhakti.

´s why our acharyas has given so much stress to Nityananda Prabhu, devotion to Him, chanting His Holy Name. Nitai na bolilo mukhe, majilo samsara mukhe... Those who don´t chant the Holy Name of Nityaaaaaaaananda, surely they will have to be drown again into material pursuits and low pleasures. Simply unfortunate...

Also one very important point: Nitai-Gaura Naam will assure You success to 90%. What is the rest 10 %, which They cant assure? Vaishnava-apparadha. Even Gauranga and Gaura Naam will not help someone, who is indulging in criticizing, offending the Vaishnavas. So that is why we have to be very very careful about it. There is one whole chapter in Chaitanya Bhagavata about it. One should read it repeatedly. Shrila Vrindavana dasa Thakura is very very merciful in this regard...

i hope it helps. Please accept Nitai as Your life and soul. All is accomplished then. Simply Nityananda, happiness and bliss.

Yours sincerely

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krsna
All glories to Swami Gaurangapada

I would like to add that spiritual progress is step by step progress. There are no magic. Ceto darpana marjanam...that is proces. By hearing Naam our mind and hearth, slowly is becoming pure. It is not that prema will enter in our materialy dirty hearth. Ceto darpana marjanam. First we should surender and then if guru and Krsna are mercifull we will get prema one day.  We are rebels, we want to imitate Lord. Therefore we do not have taste for Naam. But if we just continue, best we can, by mercy of guru and Krsna we will make progress step by step.
In chanting Gaura Naam there are no offencess.  In some special cases, off course guru and Krsna may bless sincere soul (Swami Gaurangapada explained that in post sadhana and krpa siddha), but generally we should always act on lower lewel and we should aspire to attain taste for Naam.
Actually we should not expect to get prema or bhava or anything for our chanting, we should be satisfy by chanting of Naam itself. adarsanam marma-hatam karotu va... if guru and Krsna do not give us prema, anyway we should continue... yatha tatha... va vidadhatu lampato
mat-prana-nathas tu sa eva naparah. Lord Gauranga gave us that advice. Withouth any condition. We should noy expect to get enything for our insignificant devotional attempts.

Naam is prema-vidhata, giver of prem. But due to offenses, premnam is not coming.

Yes, because of the ten offenses against Krishna Naam, prema is not coming. So if someone wants to chant only Krishna Naam, then one would have to constantly chant Krishna Naam day and night (minimum Laksha Naam) with great humility and repentance guarding against the ten offenses and then slowly Prema will come according to Hari Naam Chintamani.

Goura-Naam is not considering offenses. We are chanting Goura-Naam. Why is prema not coming?

Sometimes Gaura Naam is very merciful, sometimes Gaura Naam is very strict just like Lord Gauranga who was sometimes as soft as a rose and sometimes as hard as a thunderbolt. But Nitai Naam (Lord Nityananda's Holy Name) is always causelessly merciful irrespective of qualification or the disqualification the person chanting. Are we taking enough shelter of Nitai Naam?

Seventh Goswami Shrila Sacchidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura states in Shri Navadvipa Dhama Mahatmya that by chanting Nityananda Gauranga just once, one destroys all one's karmic reactions from all one's previous lives. But all the ten Naam Aparadhas (offenses) against Krishna Naam are not fully destroyed by chanting Nityananda Gauranga Naam once. They are destroyed by chanting Nityananda Gauranga Naam regularly with full shelter. I would recommend chanting at least 64 rounds or more of Nityananda Gauranga Naam daily with great devotion in addition to the the Hare Krishna Mahamantra if the devotee really wants to see Krishna Prema manifest in his or her body in an even shorter period of time. At least 64 rounds of Nityananda Gauranga Names daily! Yes, that is the proper Ashraya of Nityananda Gauranga Naam for those who want to destroy the offenses very quickly not just a few times daily. We have the basic stages of chanting and those are meant to gradually elevate one to the higher stages of chanting.

Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakura goes on to state: nitaai chaitanya boli jei jiva daake, suvimala krishna prema anveshaye taake..."Krishna Prema will come searching after a soul who devotedly cries out Holy Names of Nityananda and Gauranga." So if we are not getting Krishna Prema by chanting Nityananda Gauranga Naam, then it means we are not crying out devotedly while chanting Nityananda Gauranga Naam. And we are not able to cry out while chanting because we are maybe chanting only one time or only 16 times or maybe only 108 or a little more times of Nityananda Gauranga Naam daily. So again, if one is really impatient, the way to get Krishna Prema very quickly as in the above question is to chant Nityananda Gauranga Naam very regularly with feeling, devotion and full faith at least 64 rounds or even more on a daily basis for more quicker results. As in anything we do, we have to work more hard to see the results faster. And even if one cannot chant 64 rounds or more Names of Nityananda Gauranga daily, by chanting Nityananda Gauranga Naam along with the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, one is certain to attain Krishna Prema much faster than while chanting only the the Hare Krishna Mahamantra according to Shrila Narada Muni in Shri Navadvipa Dhama Mahatmya. Fully avoiding Vaishnava Aparadha (offense or criticism) towards any devotee in our deeds, words and even thoughts will also speeden it up further. Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Dear Swamiji, god-brothers and god-sisters, and friends,

Please, accept my humble obeisances. All glories to the guru parampara. All glories to the most merciful Lordships Niyananda and Gauranga. All glories to Sri Sri Radha Krishna. All glories to the devotees of the Lord.

The very question
‘why is prema not coming?is the answer. By assuming that prema is not coming, by turning away from prema, we can’t experience it. That is the secret (and the beauty) of free will. We are parts and parcels of the Lord and according to His nature we have inherited our free will. The Lord doesn’t force love upon us nor does he demand it. It’s our free choice to allow His prema to overflow our lives or to reject it. The Lord Himself is an ocean of prema, he is identical to prema the same as He is identical to His Name. When we think, murmur, chant, or sing His Holy Names, we are naturally tapped into that unlimited ocean of prema. So when you think that prema is not coming, you may not be allowing prema into your experience. In order to let prema in we have to empty our own pre-occupied mind. When we are full of ourselves, how can we be filled with the Divine? When we are totally focussed on finding one rupee (dollar), how can we be open to find trillions of rupees (dollars) at once? We have to have the faith that prema is always there. Prema is continuously knocking on your inner door. But it is up to you to let it in. You have the free will to reject it or to let it in. When you accept, Lord Gauranga Krishna is immediately giving without delay. That’s His unlimited mercy. So prema is always coming, always. Prema is the very nature of the Lord. He is so sweet, so incredibly beautiful, so intensely loving, so full of mercy that we cannot make any material imposed imagination about His glories. We can do something about it. We need to dive deeper and deeper into the chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord and our prayer ‘please engage me in Your transcendental service?becomes more sincere.

I totally agree with Igor that it is best that we don
’t have any expectations. That we just surrender and chant for the pleasure of the Lord. Personally I have seen that many devotees make the mistake to chant hastily. It’s as if they are more focussed on quantity than quality. Sure quantity (the more you do it) improves quality (the better you get at it). However it is good to check ourselves from time to time. Are we really addressing the Supreme Lord in Person? Are we really thinking of Him while we are chanting? Are we really communicating? Or are we thinking about all the other everyday stuff that is on our minds? Are we just saying the Names but not addressing the Names? When every syllable of the Holy Names leads us deeper and deeper into the mystery of His unlimited love we can be sure that we are addressing Him. Everything else is lower quality. Quality causes quantity even more than quantity causes quality. Because when you are submerged into that oceanic attraction of the Holy Names you can’t stop. You can’t even sleep. When the ecstatic excitement is constantly increasing how could you stop? So the real question is how does that supreme prema of the Lord becomes a reality in our lives? I suggest that we check ourselves on the moments we find ourselves ‘just repeating?the holy Names in a habitual way. Personally I sit down and start to chant the holy Names very, very slowly silently within myself carefully moving from syllable to syllable. I allow my attention to do only one thing: listening to those sublime beautiful sounds of the Holy names. And whenever my attention drifts away (as soon as I notice it) I bring my attention back to be on the Holy Names see Authentic Silent Meditation section at: ... ofasm.html: ""

This slowing down of the process of chanting transcends my hastiness and increases my attention manifold. Then as soon as the Lord has my careful attention I may increase the speed of my chanting again. And sometimes I am so lucky that the Lord in His unlimited mercy allows me to taste the supreme nectar of his Holy Names to the extent that I can nearly stand the oceanic happiness that overflows me. At such moments there is no way of stopping and chanting becomes a spontaneous expression of love upon love upon love. It is so beautiful, so sweet, so super attractive, that it is way beyond the words I could ever use to express what I am actually experiencing.

As a conclusion I fall down in front of all our devotees and all the fortunate souls who come in contact with them. I beg at their lotus feet to use their free will wisely and to allow the Supreme Lord to overflow their lives abundantly. Please, hear the knocking on your inner door, open, and let the Lord in. I also beg at their lotus feet that when the Lord has entered them to remember this insignificant soul and make a plea for me to be allowed into that same inner circle of unlimited transcendental happiness. Dear devotees, I can
’t wait to hold your hands and dance with you together in that divine transcendental love for the most attractive Being of the entire creation; Lord Gauranga Krishna.

Nityananda. Gauranga. Hare Krishna.

Your servant,

Hadai Nityananda dasa

Title: Prema never went anywhere
User: Anonymous    Date: 2007-05-09 00:44:05

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna, I would like to say my view on prema.

Prema never comes to anyone, it is something everyone already has in their hearts, it isnt coming and going anywhere. It is like the sun which sometimes gets covered by clouds, the clouds are maya and the material world, and when clouds cover the sun, some might say that the sun has gone, when is it coming back, when it is just behind a cloud. So we dont need to ask when will prema come, we need to ask when will maya leave, when will the clouds stop covering the sun. We need to open our hearts and minds to chanting more, because the sound vibration of the Holy Names Nityananda Gauranga can dissipate the clouds that exist in our hearts, our anarthas, and like a cool breeze can blow away all the clouds and make the sun come out...

I just want to add that we should not expect to get prema. It is sweet Lord's will and will of spiritual master. We should be satisfy with our chanting and effords in spiritual life. We should not be worried when where, how, why, prema will or not come. We are here to give something not to take.
Lord Gauranga gave us this advice how we shoud render our devotional service:
aslisya va pada-ratam pinastu mam
adarsanam marma-hatam karotu va
yatha tatha va vidadhatu lampato
mat-prana-nathas tu sa eva naparah

I know no one but Krsna as my Lord, and He shall remain so even if He handles me roughly by His embrace or makes me brokenhearted by not being present before me. He is completely free to do anything and everything, for He is always my worshipful Lord unconditionally.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Yes, Igor, but Lord Gauranga did desperately pray to get Prema because it is only on the level of Prema that can we can factually render devotional service to Lord Gauranga Krishna in Goloka:

Shri Chaitanya Charitamrita Antya 20.37

"prema-dhana vina vyartha daridra jivana
'dasa' kari' vetana more deha prema-dhana"

prema-dhana -- the wealth of ecstatic love; vina -- without; vyartha -- useless; daridra jivana -- poor life; dasa kari' -- accepting as Your eternal servant; vetana -- salary; more -- unto Me; deha -- give; prema-dhana -- the treasure of love of Godhead.

"Without love of Godhead, My life is useless. Therefore I pray that You accept Me as Your servant and give Me the salary of ecstatic love of God."

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

Yes, we should pray to Lord to get prema like you said, tatha prema bhaktir svakame prayacha. I just wanted to say that  we should depend on His will, not expecting to get anything. mama janmani jamanisvare bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi... All I want, life after life, is unmotivated devotional service unto You. We should give our best, and depend on Supreme Lord and His sweet will.
