Title: Beautiful shloka

User: Damodara Svarupa dasa Date: 2007-01-08 12:11:22

Nityananda, Gauranga, Hare Krishna! All glories to our Guru Parampara. All glories to Swamiji Gaurangapada! Dandavats to all the Vaishnavas!

Each week I try to learn a specific verse by heart. Trying to memorize a sloka (plus the necessary translation) from a language I don't even know, is very hard for me. But memorizing verses is a very important part of Krishna Consciousness.

So in my preparation towards Nityananda Trayodasi, I found this most lovely verse from CC Adi 1.2 and 1.84, which I would like to share with you all.

Vande Shri Krishna Chaitanya

Nityanandau sahoditau

Gaudodaye puspavantau

citrau sandau tamo nudau

Translation

I offer my respectful obeisances unto Shri-Krishna Chaitanya and Lord Nityananda, who are like the sun and moon. They have arisen simultaneously on the horizon of Gauda to dissipate the darkness of ignorance and thus wonderfully bestow benediction upon all.

This sloka sounds very poetic with this dau-ending. Just like the sun and the moon are always around our earth, Shri Chaitanya mahaprabhu and Lord Nityananda Prabhu are always there for us. It is impossible to think of Lord Nityananda without thinking of Shri Chaitanya, or the other way around. Through the mercy of the Guru, Their Lordships take away the darkness and ignorance in which we're living.

Yours in the service of the Holy Names of Nityananda, Gauranga and Hare Krishna,

Damodara Svarupa dasa

That's a wonderful way of remembering the Lord, andana. One verse a day, keeps maya away. It means 365 verses in a year, which would mean you will become a nice preacher at the end of one year. When we memorize and repeat the verses and prayers composed the great Acharyas, the great Acharyas become very please and pass on our offering to the Lord who is controlled by Them. Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Guru Parampara! Pranams :pranams: and Blessings :bless:!

Nityananda!Gauranga!Hare Krishna!

All Glories to Shrila Vrindavana dasa Thakura

Dandavats at lotus feet of Shri Gurudeva and all devotees

I remebered this verse, when I read your post. This is also poetic 'au' ending verse. This is very beautiful and very very nectarian verse. This is the first verse of the supremely magnamious scripture Shri Chaitanya Bhagvata.

CB Adi Ch1 verse 1

aajaanu-lambita-bhujau kanakaavadaatau

sankirtanaika-pitarau kamalaayaatakshau

vishvambharau dvija-varau yuga-dharma-paalau

vande jagat priya-karau karunaavataarau

Translation:

I offer my respectful obeisances unto Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Shri Nityananda Prabhu whose arms extend down to Their knees, who have golden yellow complexions, and who inaugurated the congregational chanting of Holy Names of the Lord. Their eyes resemble the petals of the lotus flower; They are the maintainers of the living entities, the best of bramhanas, the protectors of religious principles for this age, the benefactors of the universe, and the most merciful of all incarnations.

His Divine Grace Vishnupad Paramhansa Parivrajakacharya Shrimad Shrila Bhaktisiddhanata Saraswati Thakura Prabhupada Gosvami Maharaja's commentary on the above verse is most nectarian. Shri Shrila Prabhupada has explained each and every word in the above verse in a most wonderful way.

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna

Thank you for sharing this sloka. So wonderfull verse. :ty:

memorizing verses is a very important part of Krishna Consciousness.

It will be wonderfully if you will be able to share verses that you will learn, so that we can memorise them too. Please post more and more...

Dear Gurudeva, meyby is good idea in future to have some list of important verses that should be memorised by all devotees and disciples. Essentional verses that should be memorised. We should sort them and make small ebook or .pdf file. It would be usefull to all. Just a idea..

Yes, this will be an important project. I remember someone asked Shrila Prabhupada that he or she had no time to read the Holy Books daily. And Shrila Prabhupada surprisingly replied then they should memorize verses during the day and remember and meditate on it's meaning (transliteration) throughout the day. Unless one understands the meaning, one cannot actually remember the verse.. That is where the word-to-word transliterations are very helpful for Bengali and Sanskrit speaking devotees. This is the great gift of Shrila Prabhupada and Shri Shrila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura to us.

Ok I have tagged this thread as todo so that later we can see all todo's in one place: "http://www.nitai.us/tag.php?name=todo". Anyone can start this service. One will have to go book by book. I think a good start would be to take the best verses from the Shrila Prabhupada Shloka book which I published in India when I was in BBT and the Gaudiya Kanthahara by Shri Shrila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura.

Just a side note, if you have find a thread on this forum where I had mentioned that I will do something, please post in that thread and remind me and I will tag it as todo also. Let's at least get it all in one place so they can be done one by one. Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Guru Parampara! Pranams :pranams: and Blessings :bless:!

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

This is a very good idea. i have been thinking many times already about it and wanted to ask it too. Thank You Svarupa Damodara for the Gita Verses. i am very much looking forward also for Swami Gaurangapada's list of verses for learning. Every day some verse and meaning to meditate on would be really great. Even in form of an calendar or something like that...

Yours in appreciation,

Matus
