Title: How can we tell if what we do is for the Lord or for ourselves?

User: candrika         Date: 2006-07-29 13:33:19

This is a question I have asked myself for so many years. I am interested in everyones opinions on this subject.

There is a famous line in a popular American TV show called "Friends", where Joey tells Phoebe that there is no selfless act.

So Phoebe goes out to prove that indeed she could do a selfless act and is foiled at every turn because for every action she gets something in return and in terms of doing good for others that reaction is pleasurable and so her good deeds become a source of pleasure for herself and hence she can no longer deem them selfless.

I often wonder how we can know what the Lord wants us to do in our everday actions and lives. As the individual soul with free will is always there in the heart along with the Supersoul and so to know which it is that is directing us or being served at any point in time seems to me to be a grey area.

Any ideas anyone?

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna!

Good question! It is puzzle for me to! How to know - is it mind? Is it super-soul? Is it mind's desire or Lord's desire? We need to be pure enough to hear or know what Lord wants? What to do when we are not pure enough?

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

I think the Lord wants everything of ours and more, So I'd give it to him!

and then someday we may realize that nothing is ours and that everything is actually the Lord's including ourselves and we will cry in deep love thinking about his mercy.

I have read that the Lord is atmarama (completely self satisfied), he does not want or need anything, which is completely understandable as he is omnipotent and omniscient and all those things.

And so what could he possibly need from me or anyone else?

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Guru Parampara! :pranams: Pranams! and :bless: Blessings! He does not need anything from us but we need to offer Him everything to purify ourselves as everything belongs to Him.

There are three ways to know what is expected of us by the Lord at every moment in life:

1. Guru (Diksha and Shiksha Gurus)

2. Sadhu (Advanced Devotees)

3. Shastra (Holy Vedic Scriptures)

So how do the advanced devotees know what is to be done? I hear them saying God speaks to them? So how do they know what is God speaking to them and what is their own mind tricking them?

But what I am asking is how. Is that a mental attitude to take, as the Lord although he was descended on this Earth many years ago, now he is not descended here, we have deities and the Holy Names, and there is Supersoul. And so how do we ofer everything to the Lord?

I mean some might say that by serving other people, and supersoul in their heart they are effectively serving the Lord, some may say that by giving  all everything to their Guru representative of the Lord, but the Lord himself, where is he? How to effectively offer everything to him and be sure we are not just using a mental leapfrog to justify our own desires and satisfy our senses.

I mean many years ago there were men who would sacrifice humans and say that is for the Lord and now there will be Rain and we have offered to the Lord.

Offering everything to the Lord still we cant do what we like and say it is offered to the Lord and so that is OK.

Even the 4th offense against the Holy Names, is to chant the Holy Names, believing that by so doing, by so offering we are freed of all reaction and can do what we like. It is said to be the worst offense.

How do we know when our stomach gets full when we eat? No one else has to tell us. We just know. That is how advanced devotees experience the Lord through Naam bhajan. They dont need anyone else to tell them that they are experiencing God. They just know. And those realizations can be confirmed with the Scriptures and the writings and realizations of our previous Acharyas.

It is not just a mental attitude. We can offer everything to the Lord simply by referring to and following the instructions of Guru (Spiritual Masters), Shastra (Scriptures written by our previous Acharyas) and Sadhu (advanced devotees in Naam bhajan). It is not a matter of simply doing what one likes since it should be in line with the above three authorities otherwise it is not an offering to God. All the above three authorities basically state the same thing as Guru and Sadhus simply repeat the word of the Scriptures.
