Title: Dressing of Deities before 5 am

User: Swami Gaurangapada Date: 2006-07-30 09:11:04

I get up at 4 00 am in the morning as I need to leave at 5 30 am so I do the Shringar (dressing) for my Deities early in the morning that is before  5 30 the shringar is done..... I wanted to know that is it proper to do the Shringar so early because that is the time when KRISHNA has just woken up from sleep so I always have a feeling in mind that am i  disturbing them in any way just because I need to go early - Kamala Manjari devi dasi

Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:

In the Vraja's nitya-lila in the spiritual world, Lord Krishna "wakes" up at around 6 am and His bathing and shringar (dressing) is done from around 6 to 6.45 am.

Before that Lord Krishna is resting with Shrimati Radharani in the nikunja till around 5-5.30 am when He leaves for home. The gopies do some quick shringar (dressing) of Lord Krishna and Shrimati Radha before They leave the nikunja back to Their respective homes so that Their nightly pastimes are not revealed. So the pre 5 am dressing would correspond to the dressing by the gopies in the nikunja (groves of Vrindavana) and the post 6 am dressing would correspond to the bathing and dressing by Mother Yashoda at Nanda bhavan. So it should be ok.

The same time-frame is there for Lord Gauranga's eternal pastimes in the nitya-lila of Navadvipa. He wakes up around 6 am and then goes to the Ganga to bathe with His associates. Lord Gauranga is exquisitely dressed on the banks of the Ganga itself by all His intimate associates after Their divine bathing.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Guru Parampara! :pranams: Pranams! and :bless: Blessings!  The mangal arati is the arti (worship) performed in the nikunja (groves) of Vraja before Shri Shri Radha Krishna leave for Their respective homes and the arati performed in the groves of Shrivasa Angan before Lord Gauranga leaves for His home. Mangal arati is normally performed in the Brahma Muhurta i.e. the 48 minute period which ends at 48 minutes before sunrise.

Traditionally in Gaudiya Math, the devotees sing the Nikunja Mangal Arati song written by Seventh Goswami Shrila Sacchidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura for Mangal Arati. Though Shri Guruvashtakam of Shrila Vishwanatha Chakravarti Thakura is to be sung in the Brahma Muhurta, in the most ideal and strictest sense, if we see very technically as per the scriptures, it should not be sung in front of the Deities with the curtains open as we dont even sing the glories of Tulasi devi with the curtains open so how can we sing the glories of Gurudeva with the Deities curtain open.

Shrila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada most mercifully instructed us to sing Shri Guruvashtakam for Mangal Arati because he wanted to establish the siddhanta that the worship of the Lord's pure devotee is even higher and should be performed before the worship of the Lord and the Lord is pleased by the glorification of His devotee. And also the Guruvashtakam includes the verse...nikunja yuno rati keli siddhyai...which hints about the end of nishanta lila or at least I meditate like that while singing it. The nishanta lila (end of the night pastimes) is from 3.36 to 6 am and the pratar lila (morning pastimes) is from 6 to 8.24 am.

Ofcourse these calculations of the timings of the nitya-lila in the spiritual world and mangal arati are done with the ideal consideration of the sunrise time being 6 am. But this can greatly vary according to seasons and locations so it can be adjusted as per the local sunrise time etc.
