Title: the mind

User: Matus  Date: 2006-07-29 11:26:20

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Today i again had the opportunity to realize how strong and dangerous the mind can be. i got defeated. No one in the world has actually the power to fight against the mind. No one in the world possesses the means to conquer the mind. The help and power has to come form the Supreme Source. Only the one, who understands and accepts the philosophical truths about the Transcendental Nature of Lord's Holy Name, Form, Qualities and Pastimes and thus constantly engages in remembering and meditating upon Lord's Holy Name and Lotus Feet can conquer the mind.

i therefore pray to You, Oh Lord Nityananda and Lord Gauranga! i am completely helpless and weak-minded. There is no other way out from my fallen and unfortunate condition other than Your Suprelemy Merciful and all-potent Holy Names, which are the only means to fix my restless and cruel mind.

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Haribol Matus,

I have read how the mind can be the greatest enemy of the living entity or the best friend and so in some cases, when the mind is defeated, if the mind were acting as an enemy, then this can be a very good thing.

I think it is important though to believe you can get a grip on the mind, as even though seemingly impossible,  if we dont at least try then we are vulnerable to surrender to our lower selves, and our lower selves rather than the intelligence will control the mind and we head into difficulty, as when we surrender that way, that is when the mind really does become the greatest enemy.

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna

   Dear Matus,

In Bhagavad Gita 6.34. Arjuna exposed his doubts to Lord Krishna how he will be able to subdue and control mind.

His words are very significant for us. Arjuna describes mind on following way - cancalam hi manah – mind have flickering nature. Arjuna uses word hi just to confirm that nature of mind, hi means certainly. So that is very important for us to know – mind have flickering nature.

Next Arjuna said – pramathi. Mind have agitating nature. Disturbing nature. That is second characteristic of mind. First he is flickering and then he is always disturbed. We have practical reality about that. So many persons are trying to satisfy mind with endless variety of mental and sensual enjoyment, but they are never becoming satisfy. Mind always want something new and it is never satisfy with material arrangements.

Then Arjuna is saying balavad. Mind is strong, there is so much power.

Actually due to ones mind activities and his or her thoughts all activities are directed in that way, therefore mind have that strength to direct us in certain way. If you want to learn French or to play guitar if you concentrate your mind enough in certain amount of time you will learn it well. Therefore mind is bala-vat or very strong,

And Arjuna continues saying that mind is drdham obstinate, stubborn. That is also nature of mind. We may know theoretically very well what is for our benefit, but mind is drdham, so stubborn that he wants something else.

When person understands how powerful and strong mind is – he or she may wonder how will I ever be able to control mind?

Arjuna asked same question to Lord Krishna tasyaham nigraham manye

vayor iva su-duskaram O Krishna, and to subdue it (mind) is, it seems to me, more difficult than controlling the wind.

And Lord Krishna said that it is really so, asamsayam, without doubt. It is very hard thing to do. Krishna is saying that mind is durnigraham or very difficult to curb, to control. When Krishna said that than this is the fact. But also he is giving us how we can do it! It is almost imposiabble, but it can be done! How?

First thing is abhyasena by practice. That is first thing, by activity practice. We should practice regularly and rebellious mind will be subdued. I heard that Shrilla Prabhupada said that he practiced chanting for 30 years before he went to Amerika. 30 years! That is first thing practice. And what practice means? We should not thing that we will become experts in seconds or week. We should practice and some day we will be able to reap fruits of our endeavors.

Second thing is vairagyena by detachment. And if we apply that - practice and detachment in our chanting we will be able to control mind. Therefore there is no other way than practice chanting Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna with determination.

Shrilla Prabhupada gave very nice Purports about that in Gita "" ""

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Thank You dear Chandrika and dear Igor for Your inspiring and instructive words. It is just by Your mercy, the mercy of the Vaishnavas and the mercy of Shrila Gurudeva that i will be able to take up the chanting and surrendering to the Holy Names of Nityananda Gauranga and Hare Krishna  more seriously and in that way be able to control my mind.

Please bestow Your mercy upon me.
