Shri Shyama-Kundashtakam

Shrila Raghunatha dasa Gosvami

vrishabha-danuja-nashanantaram yat sva-goshthim

ayasi vrishabha-shatro ma sprisha tvam vadantyam

iti vrisha-ravi-putryam krishna-parshnim prakhatam

tad ati-vimala-niram shyama-kundam gatir me (1)

After Krishna killed Vrishabhasura, Shrimati Radhika said to Him, “O Vrishabha-shatru! You

are approaching us, but don’t touch us!” Hearing these words, with a single blow from

His heel Krishna manifested Shri Shyama-kunda. May that Shyama-kunda, composed of

exceptionally pure water, be my shelter.

tri-jagati nivasad yat tirtha-vrindam tamoghnam

vraja-nripati-kumarenahritam tat samagram

svayam idam avagadham yan mahimnah prakasham

tad ati-vimala-niram shyama-kundam gatir me (2)

Having been called there by Shri Krishna, all the sin-vanquishing holy places within the

three worlds began residing together within Shyama-kunda, thereby broadcasting the

extensive glories of that place. May that Shyama-kunda, composed of exceptionally

pure water, be my shelter.

yad ati-vimala-nire tirtha-rupe prashaste

tvam api kuru krishangi! snanam atraiva radhe

iti vinaya-vacobhih prarthana-krit sa krishnas

tad ati-vimala-niram shyama-kundam gatir me (3)

"O Krishangi Radhe, You please also bathe in the pristine waters of this purifying pond

which is now a beautiful holy place” - with these words Shri Krishna implored even

Shrimati Radhika to bathe in Shri Shyama-kunda. May that Shyama-kunda, composed of

exceptionally pure water, be my shelter.

vrishabha-danuja-nashad uttha-papam samaptam

dyumani-sakha-jayoccair varjayitveti tirtham

nijam akhila-sakhibhih kundam eva prakashyam

tad ati-vimala-niram shyama-kundam gatir me (4)

Seeing how Krishna’s “sin” of killing Vrishabhasura was absolved by His bathing in this

pond which is inhabited by all the holy places and which was manifest from a single

blow of His heel, Vrishabhanu-nandini Shrimati Radhika, accompanied by all Her sakhis,

manifested a similar pond nearby. Shri Shyama-kunda, composed of exceptionally pure

water, is my shelter.

yad ati sakala-tirthais tyakta-vakyaih prabhitaih

sa-vinayam abhiyuktaih krishnacandre nivedya

agatika-gati-radha varjanan no gatih ka

tad ati-vimala-niram shyama-kundam gatir me (5)

After being forbidden by Shrimati Radhika to enter Her pond, the personified holy

places became very fearful and humbly prostrating themselves at Shri Krishnacandra’s

lotus feet, said, “Having been rejected by Shrimati Radhika, the sole shelter for the

shelterless, what will be our destination?” May the pure waters of Shri Shyama-kunda,

the place where this entreaty was spoken, be my shelter.

yad ati-vikala-tirtham krishnacandram prasustham

ati-laghu-nati-vakyaih suprasanneti radha

vividha-catula-vakyaih prarthanadhya bhavanti

tad ati-vimala-niram shyama-kundam gatir me (6)

Upon seeing the distress of the personified holy places and desiring to bestow upon

them the qualification to enter Shrimati Radhika ’s pond, Shri Krishna displayed various

bodily poses and facial expressions and appealed to Radhika with clever words.

Then, very softly and courteously, Radhika replied that She was very pleased - may

the pure waters of that Shri Shyama-kunda, where these words where spoken, be my

shelter.

yad ati-lalita-padais tam prasadyapta-tair thyais

tad atishaya-kripardraih sangamena pravishtaih

vraja-nava-yuva-radha-kundam eva prapannam

tad ati-vimala-niram shyama-kundam gatir me (7)

Then those holy places, which had assumed the form of water and entered Shri Shyamakunda,

pleased Shrimati Radhika with verses of exceptionally brilliant poetry and, upon

attaining Her mercy, penetrated the land between the two kundas and entered the pond

of the ever-fresh Youthful Lovers of Vraja, Shri Radha-kunda. Shyama-kunda, composed of

exceptionally pure water, is my sole shelter.

yad ati-nikata-tire klapta-kunjam suramyam

subala-batu-mukhebhyo radhikadyaih pradattam

vividha-kusuma-valli-kalpa-vrikshadi-rajam

tad ati-vimala-niram shyama-kundam gatir me (8)

On the banks of Shri Shyama-kunda, Shrimati Radhika and Her sakhis created kunjas

beautified by desire trees and burgeoning vines with varieties of flowers and then

awarded those kunjas to Subala, Madhumangala and the other primary sakhas. That Shri

Shyama-kunda, composed of exceptionally pure water, is my shelter.

nava-jaladhara-rupe svarna-kantyam ca ragat

That intelligent person who regularly recites this Shyama-kundashtakam with great

devotion will develop loving attraction for Vrajendra-nandana Shri Krishna, whose

complexion is like that of a fresh monsoon cloud and who is accompanied by Shrimati

Radhika, whose complexion is like pure gold and who is always surrounded by Her

sakhis, thereby easily entering into Their worship and attaining Their eternal company

very soon.
