Shri Gurvashtakam

Shrila Vishvanatha Cakravarti Thakura

samsara-davanala-lidha-lokatranaya

karunya-ghanaghanatvam

praptasya kalyana-gunarnavasya

vande guroh shri caranaravindam (1)

Just as a raincloud extinguishes a blazing forest fire by showering its rain upon it, Shri

Gurudeva, by his rain of divine mercy, delivers the people burning in the fire of material

existence, suffering the threefold miseries - adhyatmika, adhibhautika and adhidaivika.

I offer prayers unto the lotus feet of Shri Gurudeva, who manifests when Krishna’s mercy

becomes very thick and who is an ocean of auspicious qualities.

mahaprabhoh kirtana-nritya-gitavaditra-

romanca-kampashru-taranga-bhajo

vande guroh shri caranaravindam (2)

Shri Gurudeva is inspired by Mahaprabhu’s sankirtana and is always dancing, singing,

and playing musical instruments. Because he is tasting Mahaprabhu’s prema-rasa in

his heart, like a madman he sometimes exhibits ecstatic symptoms - his hairs stand

on end, he shivers, and waves of tears flow from his eyes. I offer prayers unto Shri

Gurudeva’s lotus feet.

shri-vigraharadhana-nitya-nanashrin

yuktasya bhaktamsh ca niyunjato ’pi

vande guroh shri caranaravindam (3)

Always worshiping Shri Vigraha and absorbed in shringara-rasa, Shri Gurudeva daily dresses

Them differently with beautiful clothes and ornaments designed to enhance Their meetings.

He cleans the temple and performs other services for Them. He also engages his disciples

in these services. I offer prayers unto the lotus feet of Shri Gurudeva.

catur-vidha-shri-bhagavat-prasadasvadv-

kritvaiva triptim bhajatah sadaiva

vande guroh shri caranaravindam (4)

Shri Gurudeva is always satisfied to see Shri Krishna’s devotees relishing four kinds of

foodstuffs that have been offered, namely, those which are chewed, sucked, licked,

and drunk. Thus the devotees become satisfied by tasting maha-prasada. (That is,

by accepting prasada in the mood of service, material life is destroyed and the bliss

of divine love is awakened in the heart.) I offer prayers unto the lotus feet of Shri

Gurudeva.

shri-radhika-madhavayor aparamadhurya-

lila-guna-rupa-namnam

prati-kshanasvadana-lolupasya

vande guroh shri caranaravindam (5)

At every moment Shri Gurudeva is experiencing intense greed in his heart to taste the unlimitedsweetness of the holy names, forms, qualities, and pastimes of Shri Shri Radha-Madhava in Vrindavana. I offer my prayers unto the lotus feet of Shri Gurudeva.

nikunja-yuno rati-keli-siddhyai

ya yalibhir yuktir apekshaniya

tatrati-dakshad ati-vallabhasya

vande guroh shri caranaravindam (6)

Shri Gurudeva is always present with the sakhis, planning the arrangements for the perfection

of yugala-kishora’s amorous pastimes (rati-keli) within the kunjas of Vrindavana. Because he

is so expert in making these tasteful arrangements for Their pleasure, he is very dear to Shri

Radha and Krishna. I offer prayers unto the lotus feet of Shri Gurudeva.

sakshad-dharitvena samasta-shastrair

uktas tatha bhavyata eva sadbhih

kintu prabhor yah priya eva tasya

vande guroh shri caranaravindam (7)

All the scriptures proclaim Shri Gurudeva is sakshat hari, the direct potency of Shri Hari, and

is thus considered by saintly authorities to be His non-different representative. Because Shri

Gurudeva is so dear to the Lord, being His confidential servitor (acintya-bhedabhedaprakasha- vigraha, the inconceivable different and non-different worshipable manifestation of the Lord), I offer prayers unto his lotus feet.

yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasado

yasyaprasadan na gatih kuto ’pi

dhyayam stuvams tasya yashas tri-sandhyam

vande guroh shri caranaravindam (8)

Only by the mercy of Shri Gurudeva can one receive the mercy of Krishna; without his grace

the living entities cannot make any advancement nor be delivered. Meditating three times

a day on the glories of Shri Gurudeva and reciting stava-stuti, I offer prayers unto his lotus

feet.

shrimad-guror ashtakam etad uccair

brahme muhurte pathati prayatnat

yas tena vrindavana-natha-sakshatsevaiva

labhya janusho ’nta eva (9)

That person who very attentively recites this ashtakam to Shri Gurudeva during the

brahma muhurta is sure to achieve direct service to the lotus feet of Shri Krishna, the

very life and soul of Vrindavana (vrindavana-natha), upon attaining his vastu-siddhi,

or pure spiritual form.
