Arunodaya-Kirtana

Sunrise Song

Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakura

udila aruna purava bhage,

dvija-mani gora amani jage,

bhakata-samuha laiya sathe,

gela nagara-vraje

When the red-tinged sun began to rise on the eastern horizon, Shri Gauranga, the jewel

amongst brahmanas, at once awoke and took His devotees out into the villages of

Navadvipa.

‘tathai tathai’ bajala khola,

ghana ghana tahe jhajera rola,

preme dhala dhala sonara anga,

carane nupura baje (1)

“Tathai tathai” the mridangas resounded; the kartalas played in time. Overflowing

with prema, Shri Gauranga’s golden form swayed gracefully, causing His anklebells

(nupuras) to jingle at His feet.

mukunda madhava yadava hari,

bolo re bolo re vadana bhari’,

miche nida-vashe gela re rati,

divasa sharira-saje

“Mukunda! Madhava! Yadava! Hari! Everyone, chant! Chant! Fill your mouths with

the holy names of the Lord! Oh, you pass your nights in vain, captivated by sleep,

and your days decorating your body.

emana durlabha manava-deha,

paiya ki kara bhavana keha,

ebe na bhajile yashoda-suta,

carame padibe laje (2)

“You have achieved this rare human birth! What are you doing? Don’t you care for

this gift? Now, if you don’t worship the son of Yashoda, ultimately, at the time of death

you will fall into a shameful condition.

udita tapana haile asta,

dina gela bali’ haibe vyasta,

tabe kena ebe alasa hoi’

na bhaja hridaya-raje

“With every rising and setting of the sun, a day passes and is lost. Then why are you

still idle; why are you not worshiping the Lord in the heart?

jivana anitya janaha sara,

tahe nana-vidha vipada bhara,

namashraya kari’ yatane tumi,

thakaha apana kaje (3)

“Understand this essential fact - material life is temporary and filled with many

dangers and woes. You should earnestly take shelter of the holy names, and perform

only the bare necessities required to maintain your life.”

krishna-nama-sudha kariya pana,

judao bhakativinoda-prana,

nama vina kichu nahika ara,

caudda-bhuvana-majhe,

Having drunk the pure nectar of krishna-nama, Bhaktivinoda’s burning heart has been

fully soothed. There is nothing except nama in all the fourteen worlds.

jivera kalyana-sadhana-kama,

jagate asi’ e madhura nama,

avidya-timira-tapana-rupe

hrid-gagane viraje, (4)

Desiring to bless the activities of all living entities, these sweet holy names have

descended to this worldly plane. They shine like the sun in the sky of the heart,

destroying the darkness of ignorance.
