Prayers by the demigods for Lord Krishna in the womb.
Thereafter, Kansa put himself under the protection of his father-in-law, Jarasandha, the King of Magadha. He also aligned himself with many demons like Pralamba, Baka, Chanura, Trinavarta, Aghasura, Mushtika, Arishta, Dvivida, Putana, Keshi, and Dhenuka- as well as demoniac kings, such as Banasura and Narakasura. With their support, Kansa began persecuting the kings of the Yadu dynasty, forcing them to leave their kingdom and reside in other states, such as those of the Kurus, Panchalas, Kekayas, Shalvas, Vidarbhas, Nishadhas, Videhas and Koshalas. However, some engaged in Kansa’s service, such as Vidura, and they eagerly awaited the Lord’s appearance.
Kansa killed six of Devaki’s sons, and then Lord Ananta, Sankarshana, who belongs to the second chatur-vyuha (quadruple expansion), and is a plenary portion of Lord Krishna, entered her womb as her seventh child. Devaki became very joyful because of this, but at the same time she was fearful for her child’s safety.
Being compassionate upon Devaki- and desiring to protect His devotees, the Yadus, from Kansa’s persecution- the Supreme Lord ordered Yogamaya: “O My potency, go now to Vraja, where Vasudeva’s wife, Rohini is living at Nanda Maharaja’s house. Other wives of Vasudeva are also living there incognito, out of fear of Kansa. Within Devaki’s womb is My plenary expansion known as Sankarshana or Shesha. Please transfer Him to Rohini’s womb.”
Vishvanatha Chakravarti Thakura explains that, symbolically, Devaki represents bhakti and Kansa represents fear. When one always fears material association, his real position of bhakti can become manifested. From the mind, Marichi is said to appear, and his six sons are Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Mada and Matsarya (lust, anger, greed, illusion, madness and envy). When a devotee awakens his natural Krishna consciousness, Lord Krishna appears. After Marichi’s six sons are killed (by the awakening of pure bhakti), the Shesha incarnation creates a suitable condition for the appearance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The Supreme Lord continued, “Yogamaya, I shall appear as the son of Devaki, and you will appear as the daughter of mother Yashoda, the wife of Nanda Maharaja. Because, as Mayadevi, you are supreme in fulfilling the material desires of everyone, people will worship you very gorgeously with sacrifices. At various places you shall become known by various names- such as Durga, Bhadrakali, Vijaya, Vaishnavi, Kumuda, Chandika, Krishna, Madhavi, Kanyaka, Maya, Narayani, Ishani, Sharada and Ambika.”
“The son of Rohini will be celebrated as Sankarshana, due to His having been transferred from the womb of Devaki. He will be called Rama because He gives great pleasure to the inhabitants of Gokula, and He will be known as Balabhadra because of His physical prowess.”
After being thus instructed, Yogamaya immediately agreed, by vibrating the Vedic mantra om. After circumambulating the Supreme Lord, she departed for Nanda-gokula, where she executed everything as instructed.
Thereafter, while Rohini was sleeping, in the seventh month of her pregnancy, she dreamed that she had a miscarriage. Upon awakening, when Rohini found this to be an actual fact, she became very anxious. Yogamaya then informed her that her embryo was being replaced with a child from Devaki’s womb.
Meanwhile, as Devaki’s child was being attracted to Rohini’s womb, it appeared as if she was having a miscarriage. Thus, all of the palace residents loudly lamented, “Oh! Devaki has lost her child!” In fact, Kansa felt that Devaki might have purposely induced the abortion.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead then appeared within Vasudeva’s mind. As Vasudeva continued to carry the Lord within his heart, he became as bright as the sun due to His effulgence, so that he was very difficult to look at. The Supreme Personality of Godhead was then transferred from Vasudeva’s heart to Devaki’s heart, and thus she became beautiful, as the eastern sky becomes beautiful by carrying the rising moon. There was no question of semenal discharge.
Because the Supreme Personality of Godhead was within her, Devaki illuminated Kansa’s entire prison. But, because of being under arrest, she appeared to be like a fire covered by a pot, or like a person of knowledge who cannot distribute it for the benefit of the world.
Seeing her to be pure, happy and smiling, Kansa thought, “The Supreme Personality of Godhead is now within Devaki, and He will certainly kill me. What can I do? The Lord will accomplish His purpose, of this there is no doubt. Devaki is a woman, she is my sister, and she is pregnant. If I kill her, my reputation will surely be vanquished, and the Lord will punish me all the more severely. Indeed, a person who is too cruel is regarded as dead even while living. After death, people condemn him more vehemently, and his destination is hell.”
In this way, Kansa decided to wait for the Lord’s birth and then do whatever was needed. However, he remained fully absorbed in feelings of enmity toward the Supreme Lord. While seated upon his throne, while lying in bed, while eating or while walking, Kansa saw only his enemy, the Supreme Personality of Godhead- everywhere. In this way he became fully Krishna conscious, but in a way that was unfavorable.
Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva, accompanied by great sages like Narada, Devala and Vyasa, as well as other demigods, such as Indra, Chandra and Varuna invisibly approached the room where Devaki was staying. After offering their obeisances, these demigods and sages offered their prayers to Lord Krishna: “O Lord, You are the Supreme Absolute Truth. Being infallible, You never deviate from your vow to destroy the miscreants and deliver the pious. Therefore, offering our obeisances, we fully surrender unto You. Please give us protection.”
“The material body may be compared to a tree, from which come two kinds of fruit- the enjoyment of happiness and the suffering of distress. The cause of the tree, in the form of three roots, is association with the three modes of material nature. The fruit of bodily happiness has four tastes- religiosity, economic development, sense gratification, and liberation- which are experience through five organs for acquiring knowledge, in the midst of six unfavorable circumstances (lamentation, illusion, old age, death, hunger and thirst). The seven layers of bark covering the tree are skin, blood, muscle, fat, bone, marrow and semen- and the eight branches of the tree are the five gross and three subtle elements. The tree has nine hollows- the eyes, the ears, the nostrils, the mouth, the rectum and the genitals. The tree also has ten leaves- the ten airs passing through the body. In this tree, two birds are perched- one is the individual soul, and the other is the Supreme Soul.”
“The original cause of this tree is You, my Lord. Although there are various agents for creation, maintenance and destruction, it is from You alone that everything has become manifested, it is by You alone that all is maintained, and it is within You alone that all will be conserved after annihilation. Therefore, we surrender unto You. There are others, nondevotees, who perform severe austerities and consider themselves to be liberated, but actually, their intelligence is impure. They fall down from their position of imagined superiority because of disregarding Your lotus feet.”
“Devotees may also fall down from their position, but it is not like the downfall of non-devotees. Because of Your protection, they will traverse the heads of their opponents and continue to progress in devotional service.”
“O Lord, when you appear within this world, your body is not material, but is transcendental. Without Your appearance, no one would be able to understand Your true nature, but upon Your appearance, all kinds of imaginary conceptions are dispelled. Your transcendental name and form can never be understood by any kind of speculation. Your name, form and qualities can only be understood by the execution of devotional service.”
“O Lord, we are very fortunate because the heavy burden of the demons upon the earth will be removed by Your appearance. We are also fortunate because we shall be able to see upon the earth the marks of lotus, conch shell, club and disc that adorn Your lotus feet.”
“O supreme controller, You previously accepted incarnations as a fish, a horse, a tortoise, Narasinghadeva, a boar, a swan, Lord Ramachandra, Parashurama and Vamanadeva- to give protection to the entire world. Now, please protect us again by Your mercy. O Krishna, best of the Yadus, we respectfully offer our obeisances unto You.”
The demigods and sages then said, “O mother Devaki, by good fortune, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, along with His plenary portions, is now within your womb. Therefore, you should not be afraid of Kansa, who has made up his mind to continue his enmity toward the Lord and thus be killed by Him.”
After offering these prayers, the demigods and sages returned to their respective residences, and indeed, they used to regularly come in this way.
