mahavana-adi-darshanam

Gauranga Sees Mahavana and Other Forests

 eva sankathayan vipro / bhanuja prabhuna samam

 uttiryya darshayam asa / nanda-geha maha-vanam 1

   evam - thus; sankathayan - narrating; viprah - learned brahmana; bhanu-jam - daughter of the sungod, Yamuna; prabhuna samam - with Prabhu; uttirya - having crossed; darshayam asa - showed; nanda-geham - the house of King Nanda; maha-vanam - the great forest.

  After narrating this history, the learned brahmana Krishna Dasa accompanied by Gaura Prabhu crossed the Yamuna, daughter of the sun, and showed Him the house of Nanda Maharaja in Mahavana.

 putana-mocana catra / shakatasya vimocanam

 tnavarttasya durvtter / harinatra kto vadhah 2

   putana-mocanam - liberation of Putana; ca - and; atra - here; shakatasya - of the cart demon; vimocanam - deliverance; durvtteh - of the wicked being; harina - by Hari; atra - here; ktah - done; vadhah - killing.

  "Here the witch Putana received liberation, here the cart-demon was delivered, and here Shri Hari slew the miscreant Trinavarta.

 jbhamanena knena / codare vishvam adbhutam

 darshitam atra matre sa / bhitapy ashiam adadau 3

   jbhamanena - by the yawning; knena - by Krishna; ca - and; udare - in the belly; vishvam - universe; adbhutam - amazing; darshitam - showed; matre - to His mother; sa - she; bhita - frightened; api - very; ashiam - blessing; adadau - received.

  "At this spot, Krishna opened His mouth wide and showed His mother the amazing spectacle of the universe within His belly. Although Yashoda became very frightened, still she offered heartfelt blessings to her son.

 atraiva nama-karana / gargena vihita kila

 mttika-bhakana catra / vishva-rupa-pradarshanam 4

   atra - here; eva - indeed; nama-karanam - name-giving ceremony; gargena - by Garga Muni; vihitam - performed; kila - indeed; mrittika - dirt; bhakshanam - eating; ca - and; atra - here; vishva-rupa - universal form; pradarshanam - showing.

  "Here Garga Muni performed Gopala's name-giving ceremony, and here Krishna ate dirt and displayed another vision of the universal form.

 dadhi-manthana-dandam hi / dhtavan hi harih svayam

 mat-haraya bhagavan / narttitum hy upacakrame 5

   dadhi - yogurt; manthana - churning; dandam - rod; hi - surely; dhtavan - held; hi - certainly; harih - He who takes away all inauspiciousness; svayam - Himself; mat-haraya - for the pleasure of His mother; bhagavan - the all-opulent Lord; nartitum - to dance; hi - surely; upacakrame - attempted.

  "This is the rod for churning yogurt that Yashomati-nandana Bhagavan Hari held while trying to dance for the pleasure of His mother.

 yashoda ta krode ktva / hasanti vikya tan-mukham

 stana sampayayam asa / kautuhala-samanvita 6

   yashah-da - the giver of fame, Krishna's mother; tam - her; krode - on the breast; ktva - did; hasanti - laughing; vikya - seeing; tat-mukham - His face; stanam - breast; sampayayam asa - she made drink; kautuhala - love; samanvita - filled with.

  "Laughing to see His face, Yashoda took Krishna to her breast and, filled with love, made Him drink her milk.

 dugdham uttapana vikya / ta sthapya sa-tvara sati

 culli-stha dugdham uttaryya / payan manthana-sasthitam 7

   dugdham - milk; uttapanam - boiling over; vikya - seeing; tam - Him; sthapya - having placed; sa-tvaram - quickly; sati - chaste lady; culli-stham - on the fire; dugdham - milk; uttarya - brought down; payat - for the sake of the milk; manthana-sasthitam - situated by the churning rod.

  "Then seeing the milk boiling over on the fire, that chaste lady quickly put Him down and went to take the boiling milk off the stove. Then she returned to the butter-churner.

 kno 'pi krodhena samanvitah svaya / bhanda ca bhittvadshad ashmana kila

 gha pravito navanitaka capy / ashitvolukhalanghry-upari-sthito 'hasat 8

   knah - the all-attractive; api - very; krodhena - on account of anger; samanvitah - filled with; svayam - spontaneously; bhandam - pot; ca - and; bhittva - broken; adshat - He saw; ashmana - with a stone; kila - indeed; gham - house; pravitah - entered; nava-nitakam - fresh butter; ca - and; api - also; ashitva - eating; ulukhala - grinding mortar; anghri - foot; upari - above; sthitah - situated; ahasat - laughed.

  "Meanwhile, Krishna became angry and, seeing a pot of butter, broke it with a piece of stone. Entering the house, He stood upon the wooden grinding mortar while eating the fresh butter and laughing.

 tato yashoda sva-sutasya karma tat / pralapita capi hasantam uhya

 babandha damna tam ato hi namna / damodaratraiva babhuva prema-dah 9

   tatah - then; yashoda - Yashoda-mayi; sva-sutasya - of her son; karma - deed; tat - that; pralapitam - lamentation; ca - and; api - also; hasantam - laughing; uhya - having brought; babandha - bound; damna - with a rope; tam - Him; atah - therefore; hi - certainly; namna - by the name; dama-udara - He whose belly is bound; atra - here; eva - indeed; babhuva - became; prema-dah - the bestower of love.

  "By the marks of Krishna's activities, Yashoda guessed what her son had done and hearing his prattling and laughter, she caught Him and bound His belly (udara) with ropes (dama) in this very spot. For this reason, the giver of prema is now known by the name of Damodara.

 damodaro 'tra bhagavan / babhanja yamalarjjunau

 dhanya datva phala catra / babhuje phaladeshvarah 10

   damodarah - Lord Damodara; atra - then; bhagavan - Supreme Lord; babhanja - broke; yamala - twin; arjunau - two arjuna trees; dhanyam - grains; phalam - fruits; ca - and; atra - here; babhuje - enjoyed; phala-da - giver of fruits; ishvarah - Supreme Controller.

  "Then at this placethat Bhagavan Damodara broke the twin arjuna trees. Over here the Lord offered grains to a lady-peddler in exchange for some fruits and ate them, even though He is Himself the ultimate bestower of all fruits.

 asya dakina-parshve ca / golokakhyas tu gokulam

 balya-lila hi matrapi / hy akarod atha sa harih 11

   asya - of this place; dakina-parshve - on the southern side; ca - and; goloka-akhyah - called Goloka; tu - but; gokulam - the place of the cowherds; balya-lilam - boyhood pastimes; hi - indeed; matra - with His mother; api - also; hi - certainly; akarot - performed; atha - thus; sah - He; harih - Lord Hari.

  "On the southern side of this place is Gokula, known by those in knowledge as Goloka. In this very place, Shri Hari performed His childhood pastimes in the company of His mother.

 gopeshvara devam atra / pashya sarvveshvareshvara

 sapta-samudraka kundam / atra bhuvana-pavanam 12

   gopa-ishvaram devam - Lord of the cowherds; atra - here; pashya - just see; sarva-ishvara-ishvara - controller of all controllers; sapta-samudrakam - the seven oceans; kundam - pond; atra - here; bhuvana-pavanam - the purifier of the worlds.

  "O controller of all controllers, here You may see Gopeshvara-deva. And here is Sapta-Samudra Kunda, which purifies all the worlds.

 ayanasya gha grame / pashcime rasa-purvvakam

 anandakhyo gopako 'py / avasat tasyapi dakine 13

   ayanasya - of the gopa _yana; gham - house; grame - in the town; pashcime - to the west; rasa-purvakam - filled with rasa; ananda-akhyo - named ananda; gopakah - cowherd; api - verily; avasat - dwelt; tasya - his; api - also; dakine - to the south.

  "In the town to the west of this place stands the home of the gopa named _yana, husband of Shrimati Radharani, which is an abode filled with rasa. To the south, the cowherd named _nanda also dwelt.

 upananda-gha grama-madhye kna-sukha-pradam

 asya pashcima-bhage ca / ravanasya tapovanam 14

   upananda-gham - the house of Upananda; grama - the town; madhye - in the midst; kna-sukha-pradam - bestower of happiness to Krishna; asya - of this place; pashcima-bhage - in the western side; ca - and; ravanasya - of Ravana; tapah-vanam - forest of penance.

  "In the midst of this town is the house of Upananda, where Krishna took much pleasure. On the western side of the town is the forest where Ravana performed austerities.

 durvvasaso muneh kna / ashrama hy uttare 'sya ca

 asyapi nikate loha-vana bilva-vana prabho 15

   durvasasah muneh - of the sage Durvasa; kna - O Krishna; ashramam - the place for spiritual culture; hi - certainly; uttare - to the north; asya - of this place; ca - and; asya - of this place; api - also; loha-vanam - red forest; bilva-vanam - forest of bilva trees; prabho - O Master.

  "O Krishna! To the north of this spot lies the ashrama of Durvasa Muni. Nearby, O Prabhu, are the forests of Lohavana and Bilvavana.

 atrapi pashya nandasya / kna kridayatah sukham

 balya-lila-rasa tasmai / dadati paramadbhutam 16

   atra - here; api - also; pashya - just see; nandasya - of Nanda Maharaja; knam - the all-attractive Lord; kridayatah - made many games; sukham - joyously; balya-lila-rasam - the boyhood mellows; tasmai - to him; dadati - He gives; parama-adbhutam - very wonderful.

   "Here also You may see the spot where Nanda Maharaja's son Krishna happily played many games. Krishna awarded to Nanda the very wonderful rasa of His boyhood pastimes.

 meghagama ca dtva sa / nanda aha su-gopikam

 knam adaya mad-geheshvaryyai shighra samarpaya 17

   megha - clouds; agamam - coming; ca - and; dtva - having seen; sah - he; nanda - Nanda Raja; aha - said; su-gopikam - to a nice gopi; knam - Shri Krishna; adaya - taking; mat-geha - my house; ishvaryai - to the queen; shighram - quickly; samarpaya - please bring.

  "Observing the approach of some storm clouds, King Nanda said to a nice gopi, `Quickly take baby Krishna to the queen of my home.'

 sapi ta svankam aropyacumbya cananda-vihvala

 gadham alingita tena vismita vivashabhavat 18

   sa api - that very lady; tam - Him; sva-ankam - in Her own lap; aropya - having placed; acumbya - having kissed all over; ca - and; ananda-vihvala - overwhelmed by joy; gadham - deeply; alingita - embraced; tena - by Him; vismita - astonished; vivasha - helpless; abhavat - became.

  "That lady placed Him on her lap and, feeling overwhelmed with joy, kissed Him all over. Being warmly embraced by Him, she became amazed and utterly captivated by that child."

 shrutva kna-rasollasa / balakasyaiva vaibhavam

 gaura-knah kna-dasa / premnalingitavan svayam 19

   shrutva - hearing; kna-rasa - mellows of Krishna; ullasam - shining; balakasya - of the boy; eva - surely; vaibhavam - glories; gaura-knah - Krishna with a golden complexion; kna-dasam - Krishna Dasa; premna - by love; alingitavan - embraced; svayam - spontaneously.

  After hearing about the shining rasa of Shri Krishna's childhood pastimes and transcendental glories, Gaura Krishna gave a heart-felt loving embrace to Krishna Dasa.

 atra pashya ca govinda / gopala-carita-shubham

 go-carana-gatenatra / kunda ca harina ktam 20

   atra - here; pashya - just see; ca - also; govinda - O Govinda; gopala-carita-shubham - the sublime character of Gopala; go-carana - cow-tending; gatena - by taking to; atra - here; kundam - pond; ca - and; harina - by Hari; ktam - done.

  Krishna Dasa continued, "He Gaura-Govinda! Just see! Here Gopala enacted the sublime pastime of tending the cows. And here is the kuna dug by Shri Hari.

 atraiva copanando 'pi / nandam ahuya sundarah

 gopaih parivto yukti / ktva kna-sukhaya ca 21

   atra - here; eva - surely; ca - and; upananda - when Upananda; api - indeed; nandam - King Nanda; ahuya - called; sundarah - handsome; gopaih - by the cowherds; parivtah - surrounded; yuktim - proper; ktva - doing; kna-sukhaya - for the welfare of Krishna; ca - and.

   "In this place, the handsome Upananda was surrounded by the other cowherds as he addressed Nanda in order to determine the proper course of action for the welfare of baby Krishna.

 sa-vrajah shakatam aruhya / rama-kna-samanvitah

 yayau bhadraka-bhandira / dvau masau tatra cavasat 22

   sa-vrajah - Nanda, with the community of cowherds; shakatam - carts; aruhya - mounting; rama-kna-samanvitah - together with Rama and Krishna; yayau - he went; bhadraka-bhandiram - to the forests of Bhadraka and Bhandira; dvau masau - for two months; tatra - there; ca - and; avasat - dwelt.

  "Together with the cowherd men, their wives, children and cows, Nanda Maharaja mounted a cart and travelled to the forests of Bhadraka and Bhanira. There they dwelt for two months."

   Thus ends the Sixth Sarga entitled "Gauranga Sees Mahavana and Other Forests," in the Fourth Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.
