  Twenty-fourth Sarga

bhakta-manala-vilasah

Gaura's Pastimes Among the Circle of His Devotees

 tatah shri-gauranga-candrah / svarupadyaih samanvitah

 shri-radha-bhava-madhuryyaih / purno na veda kincana 1

   tatah - then; shri-gauranga-candrah - the golden moon-like Lord; svarupa-adyaih - with the devotees headed by Svarupa Damodara; samanvitah - in company; shri-radha-bhava-madhuryaih - with the sweetnesses of Shri Radha's ecstasy; purnah - full; na - not; veda - knew; kincana - anything else.

  Meanwhile, Shri Gauranga Candra was in Jagannatha Puri, accompanied by intimate devotees headed by Svarupa Damodara, and He became fully absorbed in the sweetnesses of the ecstatic moods felt by Shrimati Radharani, and He knew nothing else.

 ramanandena sahitah / kna-madhuryya-vaibhavam

 asvadyasvadayad bhaktan / bhakta-vashyah svaya harih 2

   ramanandena - with Ramananda; sahitah - together; kna-madhurya-vaibhavam - the glory of Krishna's sweetness; asvadya - having relished; asvadayat - He caused to relish; bhaktan - the devotees; bhakta-vashyah - controlled by His devotees; svayam - voluntarily; harih - the thief of the mind.

   By His own wish, Shri Hari accepts the control of His devotees' pure love. Thus, through the assistance of Ramananda Raya, He tasted the glories of Krishna's sweetness and then induced His other devotees to also taste it.

 vndavana-smarakani / vanany upavanani ca

 shri-knanveana tatra / yamuna-smarakena ca 3

 samudra-patana capi / svarupadyair nidarshitam

 kna-panca-gunenaiva / pancendriya-vikaranam 4

   vndavana-smarakani - reminding of Vrindavana; vanani - forests; upa-vanani - groves; ca - and; shri-kna-anveanam - searching for Krishna; tatra - there; yamuna-smarakena - by remembrance of Yamuna; ca - and; samudra-patanam - falling in the ocean; ca - and; api - also; svarupa-adyaih - headed by Svarupa Damodara; nidarshitam - seen; kna - the son of Nanda Maharaja; panca-gunena - by the five qualities of; eva - indeed; panca-indriya - five senses; vikaranam - attracting.

  He was constantly engaged in remembrance of Vrindavana.  of There He would search for Shri Krishna in the divine groves and bowers. Once, thinking the ocean to be the Yamuna, He fell into the ocean and was later found by His bhaktas led by Svarupa Damodara. At all times, His five senses - eyes, ears, tongue, nose, and skin - were forcibly attracted to the five features of Krishna, namely His transcendental form, sound, taste, smell, and touch.

 surabhi-madhya-patena / kurmakarena bhavanam

 shri-rasa-lila-smaranat / pralapady-anuvarnanam 5

   surabhi-madhya - in the midst of cows; patena - by falling; kurma-akarena - by the form of a tortoise; bhavanam - trance; shri-rasa-lila-smaranat - on account of remembering the rasa dance; pralapa - conversing; adi - and so on; anuvarnanam - description.

   Once, in a devotional trance He fell down amidst a herd of cows, and His body took on the shape of a tortoise. After returning to external consciousness, He chattered incessantly and described the rasa dance pastimes while absorbed in deep remembrance of that experience.

 govardhana-bhramenaiva / cataka-giri-darshanam

 knadharamtasvada / gopi-bhavena sarvvatah 6

   govardhana-bhramena - mistaking for Govardhana; eva - indeed; cataka-giri - sand dune; darshanam - seeing; kna-adhara - the lips of Krishna; amta-asvadam - relishing the nectar; gopi-bhavena - with the ecstasy of the gopis; sarvatah - everywhere.

  Seeing the Cataka sand dune, He mistook it for Govardhana Hill. Wherever He was, being absorbed in the ecstatic mood of the gopis, He would relish the nectar of Krishna's lips.

 madhura-smti-matrena / divyonmada-vicetitam

 jata svaya bhagavato / bhakti-prema-rasatmanah 7

   madhura-smti - sweet remembrance; matrena - simply; divya-unmada - divine madness; vicetitam - behavior; jatam - appeared; svayam - involuntarily; bhagavatah - of the Lord; bhakti-prema - devotional love; rasa - mellows; atmanah - whose personality.

  Simply by such sweet remembrance, the symptoms of divine madness automatically appeared in the body of Bhagavan Chaitanya, who is the very personification of the mellows of prema-bhakti-rasa.

 sattvikadyair atabhish ca / bhavaih sampurna-vigrahah

 ramananda-svarupabhya / sevito rasa-sanjnaya 8

   sattvika-adyaih - headed by sattvika; atabhih - by eight; ca - and; bhavaih - by the ecstacies; sampurna-vigrahah - complete form; ramananda-svarupabhyam - with Ramananda and Svarupa Damodara; sevitah - served; rasa-sanjnaya - with full knowledge of rasa.

   Shri Gauranga's entire body was thus always pervaded by the eight sattvika-bhavas, the physical manifestations of transcendental ecstasy. He was rendered service by Ramananda and Svarupa, who were well conversant with the science of rasa.

 bhavanurupa-shlokena / rasa-sankirttanadina

 shri-radha-knayor lila-rasa-vidya-nidarshanam 9

   bhava-anurupa - in accordance with His particular mood; shlokena - by the verses; rasa-sankirtana-adina - headed by chanting about the rasa pastimes; shri-radha-knayoh - of Shri Radha-Krishna; lila-rasa-vidya - knowledge of the various pastime rasas; nidarshanam - proclaiming.

  In accordance with the Lord's ecstatic moods, they sang verses describing Shri Shri Radha-Krishna's rasa-lila. Thus, the science of pleasure-pastimes was proclaimed.

 shri-radha-shuddha-premna hi / shravanamtam adbhutam

 pitva nirantara shrimac-chaitanya-rasa-vigrahah 10

   shri-radha-shuddha-premna - by the pure love of Shri Radha; hi - certainly; shravana-amtam - nectar for the ear; adbhutam - wonderful; pitva - having drunk; nirantaram - incessantly; shrimat-chaitanya - the personality of the living force; vigrahah - the form of rasa.

  Because of His spotless love for Krishna in the mood of Shri Radha, Shri Chaitanya, the original form of transcendental rasa, incessantly drank from that wonderful fountain of ambrosia for the ears.

 sac-cid-ananda-sandratma / radha-kanto 'pi sarvvada

 tad-bhava-bhavitananda-rasa-magno babhuva ha 11

   sat-cit-ananda - eternity, knowledge and bliss; sandra - concentrated; atma - person; radha-kantah - the lover of Radha; api - also; sarvada - always; tat - Krishna; bhava-bhavita - feeling the feelings of; ananda-rasa - in the mellows of bliss; magnah - absorbed; babhuva - He was; ha - indeed.

  The Lord's person is formed of condensed eternity, cognizance and bliss, and He is at all times the lover of Radha. Thus, while cherishing the moods felt by Her, the son of Shaci became drowned in the liquid mellows of bliss.

 ya ya lila prakurvvati / knah sarvveshvareshvarah

 ta ta ko vaktu shaknoti / tat-kpa-bhajana vina 12

   yam yam - whatever; lilam - pastimes; prakurvati - performs; knah - Krishna Chaitanya; sarva-ishvara-ishvarah - the controller of all controllers; tam tam - that very thing; kah - who?; vaktum - to say; shaknoti - is able; tat-kpa - of His mercy; bhajanam - recipient; vina - without.

  Without being a recipient of His mercy, could anyone possibly describe the pastimes performed by Shri Krishna, the supreme controller of all controllers?

 ramanandah svarupash ca / paramananda-namakah

 kashishvaro vasudevo / govindadyaish ca sarvvada 13

 aparaish ca rasabhijnaih / kna-sankirtanatmakaih

 sevyamanah sa ca kno / bhakta-bhava-vibhavitah 14

   ramanandah; svarupah; ca - and; paramananda; namakah - the person named; kashishvarah; vasudevah; govinda; adyaih - headed by; ca - and; sarvada - always; aparaih - by the others; ca - and; rasa-abhijnaih - by those learned in rasa; kna-sankirtana - the congregational chanting of Krishna's names; atmakaih - whose nature was embued with; sevyamanah - served; sah - He; ca - and; knah - Chaitanya; bhava - ecstatic moods; bhakta - of a devotee; bhava - ecstasy; vibhavita - made to awaken.

  While absorbed in the mood of a devotee, Krishna Chaitanya was rendered service by devotees who were highly learned in the science of rasa and immersed in Krishna-sankirtana, such as Shri Ramananda Raya, Svarupa Damodara, Paramananda Puri, Kashishvara Panita, Vasudeva Datta, and still others headed by Govinda, his doorkeeper.

 shri-navadvipam asadya / shri-nityananda ishvarah

 shri-chaitanya-rasonmattas / tan-nama-guna-kirttanaih 15

   shri-navadvipam - at Shri Navadvipa; asadya - arriving; shri-nitya-anandah - the original form of a devotee; ishvarah - the Supreme Lord; shri-chaitanya-rasa-unmattah - enmaddened by the rasa of Shri Chaitanya; tat - Him; nama-guna-kirtanaih - through the chanting of the names and qualities.

  After Shri Nityananda I~shvara arrived in Navadvipa, He became intoxicated by the divine rasa of Shri Chaitanya through the process of chanting His names and qualities.

 paripurnah sada bhati / gauranga-guna-garvvitah

 tad-ajna-palanad gaude / sthito 'pi tat-prakashatah 16

   paripurnah - fully satisfied; sada - forever; bhati - He shines; gauranga-guna-garvitah - proud of the qualities of Gauranga; tat-ajna - His order; palanat - because of observing; gaude - in Gauda; sthitah - remained; api - still; tat-prakashatah - because of Gaura's revelation in His heart.

  Being proud of the transcendental qualities shown by Shri Gauranga, Nityananda experienced total fulfillment. Following Gauranga's order, He remained in Gauda-desha, experiencing the expansion of Mahaprabhu within His heart.

 sveccha-mayo rasa-jno 'sau / ko veda tasya cetitam

 tad-darshana-samutkantho / yayau shri-puruottamam 17

   sva-iccha-mayah - free-willed; rasa-jnah - savant of rasa; asau - He; kah - who?; veda - knows; tasya - His; cetitam - activities; tat-darshana - the sight of Him; samutkanthah - very eager; yayau - went; shri-puruottamam - Puri.

  However, that sage of rasa is fully independent in His desires. Who can comprehend the purpose of His activities? Feeling a great eagerness to behold His Lord, Nityananda returned to Shri Purushottama Kshetra.

 pupa-vati samasadya / dhyayan gauranga-sundaram

 utthaya pranamad bhumau / nipatya pranaman muhuh 18

   pupa-vatim - a flower garden; samasadya - reaching; dhyayan - meditating; gauranga-sundaram - on the beautiful Golden Lord; utthaya - rising; pranamat - He bowed down; bhumau - on the earth; nipatya - falling; pranaman - bowing down with prayers; muhuh - repeatedly.

  Upon reaching the flower garden where the Lord was resting, Nityananda saw the form of Gauranga Sundara and entered into trance. Then He arose and bowed down on the earth. Again and again He rose and fell while offering prostrated obeisances and prayers to Shri Chaitanya.

 hunkara-gambhiraravair / jaya-gauranga-nisvanaih

 tutava parama-prito / gaura-candra maha-sukhi 19

   hunkara-gambhira-aravaih - with deep roars and cries; jaya-gauranga-nisvanaih - with cries; tutava - He praised; parama-pritah - very loving; gaura-candram - the Golden Moon; maha-sukhi - very happy.

  With deep roaring cries of "Jaya Gauranga!" Nityananda Prabhu praised Gaura Candra in great love and happiness.

 eva paraspara kna-ramau hi parameshvarau

 prema-bhakti-rasaktau / cakratur abhivandanam 20

   evam - thus; parasparam - mutual; kna-ramau - Gaura and Nitai; hi - certainly; parama-ishvarau - Supreme Controllers; prema-bhakti - loving devotion; rasa-aktau - attracted to the mellows; cakratuh - performed; abhivandanam - offering honor.

  In this same manner, the two Supreme Lords, Rama and Krishna, offered one another praise, Their hearts fascinated with the mellows of prema-bhakti.

 shri-shaci-nandanah praha / shri-nityanandam ishvaram

 nanda-putra bhavan nanda-gotha-bhakti-pradah sada 21

   shri-shaci-nandanah - the son of Shaci; praha - said; shri-nityanandam - to the eternally blissful Lord; ishvaram - the Supreme Lord; nanda-putra - O son of Nanda; bhavan - Your honor; nanda-gotha - Nanda's family; bhakti-pradah - bestower of devotion; sada - always.

  The splendid son of Shaci said to Shri Nityananda I~shvara, "O son of Nanda, Your Grace is forever devoted to the service of Your father's cows.

 alankaradi-rupena / navadha bhaktim uttamam

 pashyami tava dehe ca / kna-keli-sukharnave 22

   alankara-adi - ornaments, etc.; rupena - by the form; navadha - nine-fold; bhaktim - devotion; uttamam - transcendental; pashyami - I see; tava - Your; dehe - in the body; ca - and; kna-keli - of Krishna's sports; sukha-arnave - in the ocean of pleasure.

  "Yet I perceive that within Your body, which is the blissful oceanic abode of Krishna's sportive lilas, the nine-fold processes of bhakti are present in the form of various ornaments.

 nanda-gokula-vasina / bhaktir eva su-durlabha

 bhavyate shuddha-bhavaish ca / labhyate va naraih kvacit 23

   nanda-gokula-vasinam - of the residents of Gokula, under Nanda's rule; bhaktih - devotion; eva - indeed; su-durlabha - very difficult to obtain; bhavyate - it is comprehended; shuddha-bhavai - by pure consciousness; ca - and; labhyate - is obtainable; va - perhaps; naraih - by men; kvacit - occasionally.

  "That extremely rare devotion exhibited by the residents of Nanda's Gokula can only be experienced by devotees in totally purified consciousness. Thus it may rarely be attained by humankind, if at all.

 ta bhakti tva ca pritya hi / stri-baladibhyah svecchaya

 dadasi ko bhavas tatra / datastiti vadashu me 24

   tam bhaktim - that devotion; tvam - You; ca - and; pritya - by love; hi - certainly; stri-bala-adibhyah - amongst those headed by women and children; sva-icchaya - by Your own wish; dadasi - You give; kah - who?; bhavan - your honor; tatra - there; data - donor; asti - it is; iti - thus; vada - do tell; ashu - immediately; me - to Me.

  "But by Your own sweet will, You lovingly award that most rare jewel of bhakti even to women, children and others. Oh! Frankly tell Me - is there any other charitable person to be found such as Your Grace?"

 sa praha prahasan natha / data harta ca rakita

 prema-dah karunas tea / tvam eva sarvva-prerakah 25

   sah - He; praha - said; prahasan - laughing; natha - O Lord; data - donor; harta - thief; ca - and; rakita - protector; prema-dah - giver of love; karunah - mercy; team - their; tvam - You; eva - indeed; sarva-prerakah - He who sets everything into motion.

  Nityananda laughed and replied, "He Natha! It is You who give, who take away, and who maintain us all. It is only You who mercifully bestows prema on those souls, for You inspire all living beings within their hearts."

 ekah sa-parado nityanando vishvambharo 'parah

 svarupadyaih sada prema-purna-ananda-vigrahau 26

   ekah - one; sa-paradah - with associates; nitya-anandah - perpetual joy personified; vishvambharah - the maintainer of the universes; aparah - the other; svarupa-adyaih - with those headed by Svarupa; sada - ever; prema-purnah - full of love; ananda-vigrahau - the two forms of bliss.

  On one side stands Nityananda with His associates, and on the other stands Vishvambhara, accompanied by Svarupa and his assistants such as Raghunatha Dasa. Both of the Lord's blissful forms are forever filled with prema.

 gadadharena ca sama / sevyamanau nirantaram

 kridatah sva-sukha kna-kirttana-prema-vihvalau 27

   gadadharena - by Gadadhara; ca - and; samam - by; sevyamanau - served; nirantaram - continously; kridatah - diverting; sva-sukham - in the pleasure of Their own nature; kna-kirtana - through chanting Krishna's names; prema-vihvalau - overwhelmed by love.

  The two Lords enjoy Themselves according to Their unique natures, and They are rendered service continuously by Gadadhara. They become overwhelmed with love for Krishna as They chant His various names as follows:

 yashoda-nandanah knah / shri-gopi-prana-vallabhah

 shri-radha-ramano ramanujo rasa-rasotsukah 28

   yashoda-nandanah - the delight of Yashoda; knah - the all-attractive; shri-gopi-prana-vallabhah - whose love is the life of the gopis; shri-radha-ramanah - the lover of Shri Radha; rama-anujah - the younger brother of Rama; rasa-rasa-utsukah - eager for the mellow of the rasa-lila.

  "The delightful son of Yashoda (Yashoda-nandana) is all-attractive (Krishna) and more dear to the gopis than their own life-breath (Shri Gopi-prana-vallabha). He is the lover of Shri Radha (Shri Radha-Ramana), the younger brother of Rama (Rama-anuja), and is ever eager for the mellows of the rasa dance (Rasa-rasa-utsuka)."

 rohini-nandanah kno / yajno ramo balo harih

 revati-prana-nathash ca / rasa-keli-mahotsavah 29

   rohini-nandanah - the delight of Rohini; k-nah - the ender of the cycle of birth and death; yajnah - sacrifice; ramah - the supreme enjoyer; balah - powerful; harih - the remover of sin; revati-prana-nathah - the Lord of Revati's life; ca - and; rasa-keli - rasa-fun; maha-utsavah - very festive.

  "The delightful son of Rohini (Rohini-nandana) stops the repetition of birth and death (Krishna). He is personified sacrifice (Yajna), the supreme enjoyer (Rama), and all-powerful (Bala). He steals away the misfortune of conditioned souls (Hari), and is the Lord of Revati's life-breath (Revati-prana-natha). He revels in the great festival of rasa sports (Rasa-keli-mahotsava)."

 iti nama pragayantau / bhakta-varga-samanvitau

 shri-kna-chaitanya-nityananda-ramau smaret tu tau 30

   iti - thus; nama - name; pragayantau - singing; bhakta-varga-samanvitau - together with the group of devotees; shri-kna-chaitanya - the avatara for the age of quarrel; nityananda-ramau; smaret - He should remember; tu - indeed; tau - the Two.

  Thus should one indeed remember these two - Shri Krishna Chaitanya and Shri Nityananda Rama - as They proclaim in song Their own holy names accompanied by their devotees.

   Thus ends the Twenty-fourth Sarga entitled "Gaura's Pastimes Among the Circle of His Devotees," in the Fourth Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.
