shri-gundica-mandira-vilasah

The Lord's Pastimes Within Gundica Mandira

 ekada ptavan knah / shri-damodara-panditam

 satya kathaya man-matuh / kna-bhaktir ddhasti kim 1

   ekada - once; ptavan - inquired; knah -the all-attractive Lord; shri-damodara-panditam - of the learned scholar; satyam - truly; kathaya - tell; mat-matuh - of My mother; kna-bhaktih - devotion to Krishna; ddha - firm; asti kim - is there?

  

  One day, Gaura Krishna inquired from Shri Damodara Panita, "Tell Me truly - is My mother's devotion firmly fixed at the feet of Shri Krishna?"

 shrutva sa praha sa-krodhas / tat-prasadat para tvayi

 sasti kna-rasa bhaktir / nityananda-svarupini 2

   shrutva - having heard; sah - he; praha - he said; sa-krodhah - angrily; tat-prasadat - by her mercy; param - supreme; tvayi - on You; sa asti - she is; kna-rasa - embued with the mellows of Krishna; bhaktih - devotion; nityananda-svarupini - in the form of Nityananda.

  Hearing this, Damodara angrily replied, "It is by her unbounded mercy upon You that the goddess of bhakti, whose nature is full of eternal bliss, exists in You."

 shrutva vipra parivajya / praha sa-karuna prabhuh

 yatha tva praha ma bandho / satya tat sarvvam eva hi 3

   shrutva - hearing this; vipram - learned brahmana; parivajya - warmly embracing; praha - He said; sa-karunam - mercifully; prabhuh; yatha - as; tvam - you; praha - He said; mam - Me; bandho - O friend; satyam - truth; tat - that; sarvam - all; eva - indeed; hi - indeed.

  Hearing this, Mahaprabhu warmly embraced that learned vipra and mercifully said, "My friend, certainly what you said to Me is all true.

 tadajnaya hi ketre 'smin / vasami natra sashayah

 tat-premna niyate tasyah / sannidhim apy ala khalu 4

   tat-ajnaya - by her order; hi - surely; ketre - in Kshetra; asmin - in this; vasami - I dwell; na - not; atra - here; sashayah - doubt; tat-premna - by her love; niyate - I am drawn; tasyah - her; sannidhim - presence; api - although; alam - enough!; khalu - certainly.

  "Indeed, it is solely by her order that I reside in Shri Kshetra. Even then, the power of her love draws Me into her presence."

 tatah shri-jagad-ishasya / snana-yatra-mahotsavam

 dadara parama-pritah / sa-bhaktah sagrajo harih 5

   tatah - then; shri-jagat-ishasya - of the Lord of the universe; snana-yatra - bathing-festival; maha-utsavam - great celebration; dadara - He saw; parama-pritah - very lovingly; sa-bhaktah - with the devotees; sa-agra-jah - with His first-born (brother); harih.

  Thereafter, in the company of His devotees and His elder brother, Shri Hari saw with great happiness the grand celebration of Lord Jagannatha's bathing festival.

 tato 'navasara vikya / rama-madhavayoh prabhuh

 sa-bhakto duhkha-santapto / gatva 'py alala-nathakam 6

   tatah - then; anavasaram - the absence; vikya - after seeing; rama-madhavayoh - of Baladeva and Jagannatha; prabhuh - the Master; sa-bhaktah - with His devotees; duhkha-santaptah - burning with grief; gatva - having gone; api - although; a-lala-nathakam - to the Lord who cherishes all.

  Seeing that Their Lordships Rama and Madhava were absent during the period after the bathing ceremony known as anavasara, Mahaprabhu's heart burned with sorrow, and He left with His bhaktas to see _lalanatha-deva.

 pashyan deva sapta-ratri / sthitvayatah sa sa-tvaram

 netrotsava ca sampashyan / sagrajasya jagat-pateh 7

   pashyan - seeing; devam - the Lord; sapta-ratrim - for seven days; sthitva - having stayed; ayatah - came; sah - He; sa-tvaram - with speed; netra-utsavam - festival for the eyes; ca - and; sampashyan - looking upon; sa-agrajasya - with His elder brother; jagat-pateh - of the Lord of the universe.

  He stayed there for seven days, gazing at the Deity of _lalanatha, and then swiftly returned to look upon the protector of the universe and His elder brother. That sight was a great festival for His eyes.

 sankirttana-rasanandair / nanartta sva-janaih saha

 bhaktabhimani bhagavan / nityananda-karashritah 8

   sankirtana - congregational chanting; rasa-anandaih - by joys of the rasa; nanarta - He danced; sva-janaih - with His men; saha - together; bhakta-abhimani - the giver of love to His devotees; bhagavan; nityananda-kara-ashritah - taking shelter of the hand of Nityananda.

  Inspired by the joys of sankirtana-rasa, Gaura Bhagavan, the bestower of love upon His devotees, danced in their company while holding Nityananda's hand.

 tatah svam alaya gatva / sva-bhaktaih savto harih

 bhuktva maha-prasada ca / bhakta-datta sukha babhau 9

   tatah - then; svam - own; alayam - abode; gatva - having gone; sva-bhaktaih - by His devotees; savtah - surrounded; harih - the remover of sin; bhuktva - enjoyed; maha-prasadam - food-remnants sanctified by the Lord; ca - and; bhakta-dattam - given by the devotee; sukham - happiness; babhau - shone.

  Returning to His own room, surrounded by His bhaktas, Shri Hari enjoyed the maha-prasada brought by a devotee, and thus He shone in happiness.

 eva sadananda-rase 'ti-mattah / shri-gaura-candro hari-ramayoh shubham

 maha-vibhutyoh kila syandanotsava / dratu sva-bhaktaih saha sa-tvara yayau 10

   evam - thus; sada - always; ananda-rase - in the rasa of joy; ati-mattah - very intoxicated; shri-gaura-candrah - the splendid Golden Moon; hari-ramayoh - of Hari and Rama; shubham - auspicious; maha-vibhutyoh - who had great opulence; kila - truly; syandana-utsavam - chariot festival; dratum - to see; sva-bhaktaih - with His devotees; saha - together; sa-tvaram - swiftly; yayau - He went.

  Continuously inebrieted by ananda-rasa, Shri Gaura Candra then went swiftly in the company of His devotees to see the splendid chariot festival of the greatly opulent Lords, Hari and Rama.

 dtva ca rama madhusudana ca / sudarshanenapi yuta subhadram

 ratha-sthitau tau ratha-sasthita ta / savikya harena nanama sagrajah 11

   dtva - seeing; ca - and; ramam - Balabhadra; madhu-sudanam - Jagannatha; ca - and; su-darshanena - with Sudarshana, His disc; api - also; yutam - with; subhadram; ratha-sthitau - seated on Their chariots; tau - They two; ratha-sasthitam - seated on Her chariot; tam - Her; savikya - seeing; harena - with joy; nanama - bowed down; sa-agrajah - with His elder brother.

  When He saw the killer of Madhu and Lord Rama seated on Their chariots and also Subhadra accompanied by the sudarshana-cakra on Her chariot, Mahaprabhu joyously bowed down before Them along with His elder brother.

 shri-gundica-mandiram eva sa-tvara / rathash ca gacchanti sumeru-tulyah

 sa-bhakta-vargah kila gaura-candrama / yayau tad-agre 'khila-bhava-bhavitah 12

   shri-gundica-mandiram - temple of Gunica, name of the wife of Indradyumna, the first king to worship Jagannatha Svami; eva - indeed; sa-tvaram - quickly; rathah - chariots; ca - and; gacchanti - they are going; su-meru-tulyah - as high as Mount Sumeru; sa-bhakta-vargah - with the group of bhaktas; kila - truly; gaura-candrama - the moon of Gaura; yayau - went; tat-agre - in front of Lord Jagannatha; akhila-bhava-bhavitah - absorbed in all ecstatic moods.

  As the chariots went speedily to the Gundica Mandira, they appeared as high as Mount Sumeru. The moon of Gaura along with His company of bhaktas went before Jagannatha Svami, fully absorbed in all varieties of ecstatic moods.

 pashyan jagan-natha-mukharavinda / smaran kuru-ketra-vishala-vaibhavam

 sankirttanananda-samudra-magnaih / sva-bhakta-vargaih kila vetito harih 13

   pashyan - beholding; jagat-natha - of the Lord of the universe; mukha-aravindam - the lotus face; smaran - remembering; kuru-ketra - of the place of pilgrimage; vishala-vaibhavam - the vast magnificence; sankirtana - congregational chanting; ananda - bliss; samudra-magnaih - by those merged in the ocean; sva-bhakta-vargaih - with His group of bhaktas; kila - truly; vetitah - surrounded; harih - the dispeller of evil.

  Beholding the lotus face of Jagannatha-deva and recalling the vast magnificence of Kuru-kshetra, Shri Hari together with His assembly of bhaktas were submerged in an ocean of blissful sankirtana.

 shri-radhika-prema-bharati-matto / hasan rudan praha tvam eva natha

 agaccha yami vraja-mandala vibho / vndavana yatra su-vashika-dhvanih 14

   shri-radhika - of worshippers, better than all; prema-bhara - the affliction of love; ati-mattah - intoxicated; hasan - laughing; rudan - weeping; praha - He said; tvam - You; eva - indeed; natha - O Lord; agaccha - come; yami - I am going; vraja-mandalam - to the circle of the land of Vraja; vibho - O great one; vndavanam - the forest of Vrinda; yatra - where; su-vashika-dhvanih - the sweet sound of the bamboo flute.

  Highly intoxicated by the affliction of Shri Radhika's love for Krishna, Gauranga sometimes laughed and sometimes wept as He addressed Lord Jagannatha, "He Natha! I am going to Vraja Mandala. Please come with Me there, where the sweet sound of the bamboo flute is heard in the Vrindavana forest-bowers."

 iti bruvan narttana-gana-madhuri / samudra-magnati mano-matanga-jah

 shri-gundica-mandiram apa sa-tvara / rathena sarddha jagad-ishvarasya ca 15

   iti - thus; bruvan - saying; nartana-gana - dancing and song; madhuri - sweetness; samudra-magna - drowned in the ocean; ati - beyond; mana-matanga-jah - the elephant of His mind; shri-gundica-mandiram - the temple of Gunica; apa - reached; sa-tvaram - quickly; rathena - by chariot; sardham - with; jagat-ishvarasya - of the Lord of the cosmos; ca - and.

  So saying, the elephant of Gauranga mind utterly drowned within the sea of sweet dance and song, and He swiftly reached the Gundica Mandira together with the Lord of the universe, who was seated on His chariot.

 shri-mandire ratna-mayiu vediu / svaya prakashasu ca sangatau tau

 viveshatu rama-janarddanau sukha / pashyann ati praha tvam agatah kim 16

   shri-mandire - in the radiant temple; ratna-mayiu - made of gems; vediu - on altars; svayam - voluntarily; prakashasu - shining; ca - and; sangatau - come together; tau - the Two; viveshatuh - entered; rama-janardanau - Balarama and Jagannatha; sukham - happily; pashyan - seeing; ati - above; praha - He said; tvam - You; agatah - come; kim - have?

  

  Rama and Janardana entered together into the radiant temple and sat on shining altars of gems. Seeing Them happily situated, Gauranga felt the mood of Radharani and asked Krishna, "Have You now come home?"

 vndavane agata eva shri-harir / iti sv-avadij janata-svanaih prabhuh

 sarvva vana ramyam anupravishya ca / svananda-tno 'khila-bhava-purnah 17

   vndavane - in Vrindavana; agatah - come; eva - indeed; shri-harih - the remover of sin; iti - thus; su-avadit - He said nicely; janata - the multitude; svanaih - by the sounds; prabhuh - the Master; sarvam - all; vanam - forest; ramyam - charming; anupravishya - entering after; ca - and; sva-ananda-tnah - thirsty for His own happiness; akhila-bhava-purnah - filled with complete ecstasy.

  Using the tumultuous roar of the crowds as His voice, Shri Hari replied in a very sweet tone, "Yes, I have indeed returned to Vrindavana." Then eager to taste the happiness of their own original rasa, He became replete with all divine ecstacies and with Shri Radha entered the most charming of all the groves of Vndavana.

 jagannathasya sarvva hi / bhogadi-rasa-vaibhavam

 pashyan bhakta-janaih sarddha / karoti kirttana mahat 18

   jagat-nathasya - of Jagannatha; sarvam - all; hi - certainly; bhoga - enjoyment; adi-rasa - the original rasa; vaibhavam - the magnificence; pashyan - seeing; bhakta-janaih - with the bhaktas; sardham - in company; karoti - He performs; kirtanam - describing the Lord in name; mahat - great.

  Beholding the magnificent arrangements for Jagannatha-deva's enjoyment of this adi-rasa, Gaura Hari together with His bhaktas performed a great kirtana.

 vndaranya-vilasino mura-ripoh shri-rasa-lila shubha

    sakad eva vilasa-lasya-lahari-purna manan shri-harih

 shri-radha-rasa-madhuri-dhuri-tanur gauranga-murttih svaya

    shri-nandatma-ja eva bhakti-rasikah svarajya-lakmi dadhe 19

   vnda-aranya - of the forest of Vrinda; vilasinah - of the enjoyer of pleasure-pastimes; mura-ripoh - of the enemy of Mura; shri-rasa-lilam - the rasa dance; shubham - sublime; sakat - direct; eva - indeed; vilasa-lasya - pastime dance; lahari - great wave; purnam - full; manan - thinking; shri-harih - the delightful thief of the mind; shri-radha - the sublime worshipper; rasa-madhuri - the sweetness of the rasa; dhuri - peak; tanuh - form; gauranga - the golden Lord; murtih - form; svayam - spontaneously; shri-nanda-atmaja - the son of Nanda; eva - indeed; bhakti - devotional service; rasikah - connoisseur of rasa; svarajya - monarchy; lakmim - opulence; dadhe - bestowed.

  Shri Gaura Hari experienced His own limitless wave of pastime dancing to be none other than the sublime Vndavana rasa-lila performed by the enemy of Mura. Surely Shri Gauranga is none other than that same son of Nanda come to relish the superexcellence of Shri Radha-rasa, but He has now appeared in the form of a rasika-bhakta in order to distribute the wealth of His sovereign realm of Goloka.

   Thus ends the Twentieth Sarga entitled "The Lord's Pastimes Within Gundica Mandira," in the Fourth Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.
