Seventeenth Sarga

bhakta-gotha-melanam

The Assembly of Devotees

 atha bhakta-ganah sarve / ye ye gauda-nivasinah

 gantum icchanti gauranga-darshanaya nilacalam 1

   atha - once; bhakta-ganah - the group of bhaktas; sarve - all; ye ye - whoever; gauda-nivasinah - residents of Bengal; gantum - to go; icchanti - were desiring; gauranga-darshanaya - for a sight of Gauranga; nila-acalam - to the temple like an unmoving blue mountain (Jagannatha Puri).

  Once all the bhaktas residing in Gaua desired to go to Nilacala to see Shri Gauranga.

 acaryah shrimad-advaita / ishvaro jagata guruh

 sa-ganah paramanandah / shrivasah saha bhratbhih 2

   acaryah shrimat advaitah - the splendid Advaita; ishvarah - Supreme Lord; jagatam - of the universes; guruh - weighty teacher; sa-ganah - with His group; parama-anandah - very jolly; shrivasah - the pure devotee; saha bhratbhih - with his brothers.

  There was Shri Advaitacarya, the Supreme Lord and guru of all living entities in the company of His associates, and also Shrivasa hakura, who was in a very blissful mood, together with his brothers.

 acaryah ratnah shri-candra-shekharacarya eva ca

 pundarikakako vidya-nidhih prema-nidhis tatha 3

   acaryah ratnah - the Jewel Teacher; shri-candra-shekhara-acarya; eva - indeed; ca - and; pundarika-akakah - the lotus eyed; vidya-nidhih - the ocean of wisdom; prema-nidhih - the ocean of love; tatha - also.

  There was Candra Shekhara, known as the Jewel _carya, and Pundarikaksha Vidyanidhi, also known as Prema-nidhi.

 khola-veceti vikhyatah / sa bhakta-shridharah sukhi 8

   ganga-dasa akhyakah - the teacher of Vishvambhara; ca - and; eva - indeed; panditah - scholar; sat-guna-anvitah - filled with good qualities; vakra-ishvarah panditah - the master of twists, a scholar; ca - and; pradyumna-brahmacari; api - also; hari-dasa - the incarnation of Brahma; akhya - known; thakkurah - as good as God; haridasa-dvijah; tatha - also; shri-vasudeva-dattah - the incarnation of Prahlada Maharaja; shri-mukunda-dattah; eva - indeed; ca - and; shri-shivananda-senah - the maintainer of the devotees; ca - and; putra-dara-samanvitah - with his wife and sons; shri-govinda-ghoah; eva - indeed; mukunda-gayaka-uttamah - Mukunda the excellent singer; lekhakah - writer; vijayah; ca - and; eva - indeed; shri-sada-shiva-panditah; purua-uttamah - transcendental personality; sanjayah; ca - and; shriman; akhyaka - known as; panditah - scholar; shri-nandana; akhyah - known as; brahmacari - celibate; shuklambarah; tatha - also; khola-veca - banana salesman; iti - thus; vikhyatah - renowned; sah - he; bhakta-shridharah;sukhi - happy.

  There was also the scholar known as Gangadasa, who was endowed with godly qualities, as well as Vakreshvara Panita and Pradyumna Brahmacari. Both hakura Haridasa and Dvija Haridasa were there, as well as Vasudeva Datta and Mukunda Datta. Shri Shivananda Sena also came along with his wife and sons. Indeed Govinda Ghoa was there with Mukunda, the best of singers. There was the scribe Vijaya, the scholar Sadashiva, Purushottama, Sanjaya, and Shriman Panita. There were the brahmacaris, Shri Nandana and Shuklambara, and also the famous self-satisfied bhakta named Shridhara, who was known as Khola-vecha, the salesman of banana products.

   lekhaka-panditah - writer and scholar; ca - and; eva - indeed; gopinatha; akhya - called; panditah - scholar; shri-garbha-panditah; ca - and; api - also; panditah; vana-malikah; jagat-isha-panditah; ca - and; hiranya; akhyah - called; ca - and; vainavah - the devotee of the Lord; buddhi-manta; akhya - called; khanah - emperor; ca - and; acaryah shri-purandarah; raghava-panitah; ca - and; eva - indeed; vaidya-siha - lion among physicians; murarikah; shri-garuda-panditah; ca - and; eva - indeed; gopinatha; akhya - called; sihakah - lionlike; shri-rama-panditah; ca - and; eva - indeed; shri-narayana-panditah; damodarah panditah; ca - and; raghunandana-thakkurah; shri-mukunda; narahari; ciranjiva; sulocanah; ramananda-vasuh; ca - and; eva - indeed; satyaraja; adayah - and so on; tatha - also.

  There was the writer and scholar, Gopinatha Panita, as well as Shri Garbha Panita and Panita Vanamali. There was Jagadisha Panita, Vaishnava Hiranya, Buddhimanta Khana and _carya Shri Purandara, Shri Raghava Panita, Murari, the lion among physicians, Garuda Panita and Gopinatha Siha, Shri Rama Panita, Shri Narayana Panita, Damodara Panita and Raghunandana hakura, Shri Mukunda, Narahari, Ciranjiva, Sulocana, Ramananda Vasu, Satyaraja and others.

 sarve shri-kna-chaitanya-pranah prema-samanvitah

 acaryya-prabhuna sarddham / ayayuh puruottamam 14

   sarve - all; shri-kna-chaitanya-pranah - who held the Lord as their life-breath; prema-samanvitah - endowed with prema; acarya-prabhuna - with the _carya; sardham - in company; ayayuh - went; puruottamam - Jagannatha Puri.

   All of these bhaktas were as attached to Shri Krishna Chaitanya as to their own life-breath. Thus in a mood of great love, they travelled to Purushottama Dhama along with Advaita Prabhu.

 shriman-narendram ayatan / bhaktan sarveshvaro harih

 nikata-sthan bhakta-ganan / preayam asa sa-tvaram 15

   shriman-narendram - the splendid lake of the king; ayatan - coming; bhaktan - devotees; sarva-ishvarah - controller of all; harih - the remover of evil; nikata-sthan - situated near Him; bhakta-ganan - groups of devotees; preayam asa - sent; sa-tvaram - quickly.

  Shri Hari, the Master of all, immediately sent the group of devotees who were standing near Him to receive the arriving bhaktas at Narendra Sarovara.

 pashcad eva svayam api / gantu cakre manah prabhuh

 bhakta-prano bhakta-vasho / bhaktana priti-dah sada 16

   pashcat - afterwards; eva - indeed; svayam - Himself; api - also; gantum - to go; cakre manah - fixed His mind; prabhuh - the Master; bhakta-pranah - life force of His devotee; bhakta-vashah - controlled by His devotee; bhaktanam - for His devotees; priti-dah - giver of love; sada - always.

  Afterwards He, who is the very life force of His devotees, who is controlled by His devotees and who bestows love on His devotees, determined to set forth.

  Nityananda Prabhu together with Panita Shri Gadadhara, Puri Shri Paramananda, and Bhatta Shri Sarvabhauma, Panita Jagadananda and Shri Kashi Mishra, Damodara Svarupa and Panita Shankara, Shri Kashishvara Gosvami, Panita Bhagavan, Pradyumna Mishra and Shri Paramananda Patra, Shri Ramananda Raya and Govinda, the Lord's doorman, Brahmananda Bharati, Shri Rupa and Shri Sanatana...

   shri-raghunatha-dasah; ca - and; vaidyah - physician; shri raghunathakah; shri-narayana-nanda; akhya - named; acarya-putra-nandanah - the delightful son of Shri Advaita; acyutananda-gosvami; gauranga-prana-vallabhah - whose life force is his love for Gauranga; shikhi-maheti; vikhyatah - renowned; vani-nathah; tatha - also; apare - others; ye - who; ksetra-vasinah - residents of Kshetra; bhaktah - the devotees; ayayuh - went; prabhuna - with Prabhu; saha - with; etaih - with them; samanvitah - accompanied; kna-chaitanyah - the avatara for the age of quarrel; bhakta-vatsalah - affectionate to His devotees; shri-narendra-sarah - the lake of the King; tiram - bank; agatah - came; parama-ishvarah - supreme Lord; tatra - there; advaitah - Advaita; api - also; bhagavan - Lord; sa-bhaktah - with His devotees; samupasthitah - approached.

  ...Shri Raghunatha Dasa and the physician Raghunatha, Shri Narayana Nanda and the delightful son of Advaita _carya named Acyutananda Gosvami, whose life and soul was the love he held for Shri Gauranga, the renowned Shikhi-Maheti as well as Vaninatha and all the other bhaktas who resided in Kshetra went along with their Prabhu. In their company, the Supreme Master, Shri Krishna Chaitanya, whose heart is always filled with affectionate for His devotees, came to the bank of Narendra Sarovara, where at that very moment the great Personality Shri Advaita was arriving with the devotees from Gaua-desha.

 ubhayor darshanad eva / sarvve jata-mahotsavah

 ashru-kampadayo bhava / murtimantas tada babhuh 25

   ubhayoh - of the two; darshanat - by seeing; eva - indeed; sarve - all; jata-maha-utsavah - became very festive; ashru-kampa-adayah - tears, trembling and so on; bhavah - ecstacies; murtimantah - personification; tada - then; babhuh - were.

  When the two parties of devotees glimpsed one another, everyone became extremely enlivened by a spontaneous festive spirit, and it seemed as if the various symptoms of ecstasy such as weeping and trembling appeared in personified form at that place.

   Thus ends the Seventeenth Sarga entitled "The Assembly of Devotees," in the Fourth Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.
