 Thirteenth Sarga

gopa-anugrahah

The Lord Shows Mercy to the Gopa

 tatash ca kna-dasena / darshito vraja-mandalam

 vanditah paraya bhaktya / praha ta karuna-nidhih 1

   tatah - then; ca - and; kna-dasena - by Krishna Dasa; darshitah - shown; vraja-mandalam - the circle of Vraja; vanditah - honored; paraya bhaktya - with exalted devotion; praha - He said; tam - to him; karuna-nidhih - ocean of mercy.

  After Krishna Dasa had shown Vraja Manala to Lord Shri Gauranga, he worshipped Him with pure devotion. Then the ocean of mercy addressed that vipra:

 yatha me hdaya snigdha / kna-katha-rasamtaih

 tatha te kna-candrash ca / prasanno bhavatu svayam 2

   yatha - so; me - My; hdayam - heart; snigdham - soft; kna-katha - Krishna topics; rasa-amtaih - by the rasa nectar; tatha - so; te - of you; kna-candrah - Krishna moon; ca - and; prasannah - very pleased; bhavatu - let it be; svayam - naturally.

  "Because My heart has now become softened by hearing the rasa-filled nectar of Krishna-katha from you, therefore Krishna Candra Himself must naturally be very pleased with you."

 sa aha tava daso 'ha / tva knah shri-niketanah

 tva vina na hi janiya / yatha tat kuru me prabho 3

   sah - he; aha - said; tava - Your; dasah - servant; aham - I; tvam - You; knah - the all-attractive; shri-niketanah - the shelter of Shri, the goddess of fortune; tvam - You; vina - without; na - not; hi - indeed; janiyam - I may know; yatha - as; tat - that; kuru - do; me - to me; prabho - O master.

  Krishna Dasa replied, "I am Your servant, and You are Lord Krishna, the shelter of goddess Shri. Without Your sanction I am incapable of knowing anything, so kindly do with me as You see fit, O Prabhu!"

 tathastv iti vara dattva / tam alingya shaci-sutah

 jagan-natha ca sasmtya / yayau brahmana-savtah 4

   tatha astu - so be it; iti - thus; varam - blessing; dattva - giving; tam - him; alingya - embracing; shaci-sutah - the son of Shaci; jagan-natham - Lord of the universe; ca - and; sasmtya - recalling; yayau - He went; brahmana-savtah - surrounded by brahmanas.

  The son of Shaci embraced him and blessed him, saying, "So be it." Then remembering Lord Jagannatha, He departed, surrounded by brahmanas.

 yamuna-tiram asadya / prayaga punar agamat

 veni snatva madhava ca / dtva tatra sthito harih 5

   yamuna-tiram - Yamuna's bank; asadya - arriving; prayagam - the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and Sarasvati rivers; punah - again; agamat - went; venim - confluence; snatva - bathed; madhavam - the Deity of Bindu Madhava; ca - and; dtva - seeing; tatra - there; sthitah - rested; harih - the remover of sin.

  Travelling along the bank of the Yamuna, Shri Hari again arrived at the city of Prayaga. After bathing at the confluence of the three holy rivers, and after seeing the Deity of Bindu Madhava, He rested there.

 tatra shri-rupa agatya / sanujo jagad-ishvaram

 dadarsha prema-sampurno / danda-vat patito bhuvi 6

   tatra - there; shri-rupah - Rupa Gosvami; agatya - coming; sa-anujah - with his younger brother; jagat-ishvaram - the Lord of all sentient beings; dadarsha - he saw; prema-sampurnah - filled with love; danda-vat - like a rod; patitah - fell; bhuvi - on the earth.

  Shri Rupa Gosvami arrived there in the company of his younger brother, Anupama. When Rupa saw the Lord of all sentient beings, His heart filled with prema and he fell flat like a rod to the ground.

 tam alingya sva-carana / dattva tasya shiropari

 praha prayahi mathura / mad-ajna pratipalaya 7

   tam - him; alingya - embracing; sva-caranam - own feet; dattva - having given; tasya - His; shira-upari - on his head; praha - He said; prayahi - go forth; mathuram - to Krishna's birth-place; mat-ajnam - My order; pratipalaya - cherish.

  Gaura Hari embraced Shri Rupa and blessed him by placing His feet upon his head, saying, "Go forth to Mathura, and always cherish My teachings.

 shri-radha-knayor lila / vndavana-vibhuitam

 vyakti-kariyasi tatra / mama pritir na sashayah 8

   shri-radha-knayoh - of Radha-Krishna; lilam - pleasure-pastime; vnda-vana-vibhuitam - the ornament of Vrindavana; vyakti-kariyasi - you shall manifest; tatra - there; mama - My; pritih - pleasure; na sashayah - doubtlessly.

  "There you shall manifest the pastimes of Radha-Krishna, which are the ornaments of Vrindavana. Have no doubt, this will bring Me pleasure.

 gauda-desha-pathe shrimaj-jagannathasya darshane

 agamiyasi cen mahya / darshana bhavi sarvvatha 9

   gauda-desha-pathe - on the path to Bengal; shrimat-jagat-nathasya - of Lord Jagannatha; darshane - while seeing; agamiyasi - you shall come; cet - if; mahyam - with Me; darshanam - sight; bhavi - there will be; sarvatha - by all means.

  "If you should come back by the path that leads through Gauda in order to take darshana of Shri Jagannatha, then at that time you can by all means also have My association and darshana."

 sa aha carana dhtva / gacche 'ha pada-sevakah

 na hiti bhagavan praha / gaccha tva mathura prati 10

   sah - he; aha - said; caranam - feet; dhtva - holding; gacche - I am going; aham - I; pada-sevakah - Your foot-servant; na - not; hi - certainly; iti - thus; bhagavan - Lord; praha - He said; gaccha - go; tvam - you; mathuram - to the birthplace of Krishna; prati - towards.

  After taking the dust of Shri Chaitanya's feet, Rupa said, "I shall now travel with You as Your foot-servant." The Lord replied, "No, indeed you shall not. Now you must travel to Mathura."

 evam uktva yayau knah / kashi brahmana-veshmani

 sthitas tatragatah shriman / sanatanah prabhu-priyah 11

   evam - thus; uktva - saying; yayau - He went; knah - Krishna Chaitanya; kashim - Kashi; brahmana-veshmani - in the house of a brahmana; sthitah - staying; tatra - there; gatah - went; shriman - noble; sanatanah - Sanatana; prabhu-priyah - dear to Prabhu.

  So saying, Krishna Chaitanya left for Kashi, where He stayed in the house of a brahmana. Then the noble Sanatana arrived, who was dear to the heart of Prabhu.

 ta dshtva sahasa kna / utthaya paramadarat

 ddham alingana ktva / gadgadantam uvaca ha 12

   tam - him; dshtva - seeing; sahasa - immediately; knah - Krishna Chaitanya; utthaya - rising; parama-adarat - with extreme respect; ddham - firmly; alinganam - embrace; ktva - made; gadgadantam - faltering; uvaca - said; ha - indeed.

  When He saw him, Krishna Chaitanya at once stood up with great respect. After embracing him firmly, He said falteringly:

 shri-kna-karuna ko 'pi / vaktu shaknoti panditah

 ya tva viaya-kupa-stha / samuddhtya baliyasi 13

   shri-kna-karunam - the mercy of Krishna; kah api - who truly?; vaktum - to speak; shaknoti - is able; panditah - learned man; ya - which; tvam - you; viaya-kupa - the well of sense objects; stham - situated; samuddhtya - lifted up; baliyasi - powerful.

  "Who is that scholar competent to describe the mercy of Krishna? Truly that mercy is immeasurably powerful, for it has extricated you from the dark well of sense-gratification.

 shri-kna-nikata nitva / tan-madhuryyam apayayat

 sadhu sadhv iti harena shikayam asa ta punah 14

   shri-kna-nikatam - near Shri Krishna; nitva - brought; tat-madhuryam - His sweetness; apayayat - it has made you drink; sadhu sadhu - very good!; iti - thus; harena - with joy; shikayam asa - He taught; tam - him; punah - again.

  "It has brought you near Shri Krishna and has forced you to drink His sweetness. Very good! Oh very good!" Highly exhilarated, Gaura instructed him further:

 vndavanaya gantavya / bhakti-shastra-nirupanam

 lupta-tirtha-prakasha ca / tan-mahatmyam api sphutam 15

   vndavanaya - to Vrindavana; gantavyam - should go; bhakti-shastra-nirupanam - propounding the bhakti-scriptures; lupta-tirtha - lost holy places; prakasham - revealing; ca - and; tat-mahatmyam - the glories of Krishna's holy abode; api - also; sphutam - expand.

  "You must go to Vrindavana. Propound the bhakti-shastras there and reveal the lost holy places. In this way you will spread far and wide the glories of Vraja-dhama.

 kartavya bhavata yena / bhaktir eva sthira bhavet

 yam ashritya sukhenaiva / shri-kna-prema-madhurim 16

 pibanti rasika nitya / sarasara-vicakanah

 sa aha tvat-kpa sarva-phala-da mama pavani 17

   kartavyam - to be done; bhavata - by your grace; yena - whereby; bhakti - devotion; eva - indeed; sthira - fixed; bhavet - may become; yam - whom; ashritya - taking shelter; sukhena - happily; eva - indeed; shri-kna-prema-madhurim - the sweetness of love for Krishna; pibanti - they drink; rasika - the rasa-relishers; nityam - always; sara-asara - essential and non-essential; vicakanah - clear-sighted souls; sah - he; aha - said; tvat-kpa - Your mercy; sarva-phala-da - giving all fruits; mama - my; pavani - purifier.

   "All this your grace must do so that the goddess of devotion, Bhakti-devi, becomes firmly established in this world. Then by taking shelter of her, the rasikas who are able to discern between matter and spirit may always drink with joy the sweet beverage of Krishna-prema." Sanatana replied, "It is solely by Your mercy that all these transcendental fruits may flourish, and it is by Your mercy also that my heart may become clean."

 shri-kneti tvayokta ca / tadaiva manasarthakam

 hasan praha hikeshas / tvam eva buddhi-sattamah 18

   shri-kna - O Shri Krishna; iti - thus; tvaya - by You; uktam - spoken; ca - and; tada - then; eva - indeed; manasa-arthakam - satisfying to the mind; hasan - laughing; praha - He said; hika-ishah - the master of the senses; tvam - you; eva - indeed; buddhi-sattamah - most intelligent.

  "O Shri Krishna, all that you have spoken satisfies My mind." Hrishikesha smiled and said, "Certainly you are the most intelligent of men.

 dtva madhu-puri vndaranyam eva punar bhavan

 ayasyati jagannatha-darshanartha mad-ajnaya 19

   dtva - having seen; madhu-purim - the city of Madhu; vnda-aranyam - the forest of Vrinda; eva - indeed; punah - again; bhavan - your honor; ayasyati - you will come; jagat-natha-darshana-artham - for the purpose of seeing Jagannatha Svami; mat-ajnaya - by My order.

  "After seeing the city of Madhupuri and Vrindaranya, by My order your grace must return to see Jagannatha Svami."

 kashi-vasi-janan sarvvan / kna-bhakti-pradanatah

 uddhtya kpaya kno / bhaktana sukha-hetave 20

   kashi-vasi-janan - residents of Kashi; sarvan - all; kna-bhakti-pradanatah - bestowing devotion to Krishna; uddhtya - uplifting; kpaya - by mercy; knah - Krishna Chaitanya; bhaktanam - of the bhaktas; sukha-hetave - for the happiness.

  Then, to bring happiness to His bhaktas, Krishna mercifully delivered all the residents of Kashi and bestowed Krishna-bhakti on them.

 sanatana samalingya / tapanadin yatha-sukham

 jagama sa-tvara shriman / jagannatha-didkaya 21

   sanatanam - Sanatana; samalingya - embracing; tapana-adin - Tapana Mishra and the other bhaktas; yatha-sukham - according to their pleasure; jagama - He went; sa-tvaram - swiftly; shriman - splendid; jagat-natha-didkaya - with a desire to see Jagannatha.

  After embracing Sanatana, Tapana Mishra, and the other devotees to their full satisfaction, the illustrious Lord swiftly set off, eager to see Jagannatha Svami.

 eva sa bhagavan knah / pathi gacchan kpa-nidhih

 dtva gopam uvaceda / sa-takra-kalasa prabhuh 22

   evam - thus; sah - He; bhagavan - the all-opulent Lord; knah - Krishna Chaitanya; pathi - on the path; gacchan - going; kpa-nidhih - the jewel of mercy; dtva - seeing; gopam - cowherd boy; uvaca - said; idam - this; sa-takra-kalasam - with a pot of diluted buttermilk; prabhuh - Master.

  Then, as the all-opulent Lord Krishna Chaitanya, the jewel of mercy, travelled on the path, He saw a cowherd boy with a pot of buttermilk, and said to him:

 pipasito 'ha takra me / dehi gopa yatha-sukham

 shrutva parama-harena / sampurna-kalasa dadau 23

   pipasitah - thirsty; aham - I; takram - buttermilk; me - to Me; dehi - give; go-pa - O cowherd; yatha-sukham - if it pleases you; shrutva - hearing; parama-harena - with great joy; sampurna-kalasam - full pot; dadau - he gave.

  "O gopa, I am thirsty. If it pleases you, give Me some buttermilk." Hearing this, the cowherd boy very jubilantly gave Gaura Sundara the whole pot.

 hastabhya kalasa dhtva / sa-takra bhakta-vatsalah

 pitva gopa-kumaraya / vara dattva yayau harih 24

   hastabhyam - with His hands; kalasam - pot; dhtva - held; sa-takram - with buttermilk; bhakta-vatsalah - fond of devotees; pitva - having drunk; gopa-kumaraya - unto the cowherd boy; varam - blessing; dattva - gave; yayau - He went; harih - Hari.

   Lord Hari, who is affectionate to His devotees, took the pot of buttermilk in His hands. After drinking it, He blessed the cowherd boy and then departed.

   Thus ends the Thirteenth Sarga entitled "The Lord Shows Mercy to the Gopa," in the Fourth Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.
