Third Sarga

radha-desha-bhramanam

Wandering in Raha-desha

 atha natva guroh pada / tam anujnapya madhavah

 tadajnayavrajad desha / radha gudho maha-bhujah 1

   atha - then; natva - bowing; guroh - of guru; padam - feet; tam - him; anujnapya - taking permission; madhavah - the husband of Lakshmi; tada - then; ajnaya - by his order; avrajat - He went; desham - land; radham - the land in Bengal on the western bank of the Ganga; gudha - secretly, confidential; maha-bhujah - mighty-armed.

  Then and bowing to the feet of His guru , the mighty-armed Madhava then requested permission to depart. Following his order, He left secretly for Raha-desha, absorbed in confidential thoughts.

 nityavadhutena saha / kna-gatha muhur muhuh

 pathi gacchan lapan ntyan / gayan sva-bhakti-bhavitah 2

   nitya - eternal; avadhutena - by He who is free from convention; saha - together with; kna-gatham - songs of Krishna; muhu muhuh - repeatedly; pathi - on the path; gacchan - going; lapan - conversing; ntyan - dancing; gayan - singing; sva-bhakti-bhavitah - with moods of His own devotion.

  While travelling on the path in the company of the avadhuta, Shri Chaitanya again and again untiringly discussed the ever-fresh qualies of Shri Krishna and danced and sang  bhakti-inspiring songs for His internal identity of Shri Shri Radha-Krishna.

 dhyayan kna-padambhojam / atmanatmatma-vigraham

 vrajan premashru-dharabhir / nirjharair giri-shngavat 3

   dhyayan - contemplating; kna-pada-ambhojam - the lotus feet of Krishna; atmana - by His heart; atma-atma - the soul of all souls, Paramatma; vigraham - form; vrajan - going; prema-ashru - tears of love; dharabhi - with currents; nirjharai - by waterfalls; giri-shnga-vat - like the peak of a mountain.

  While wandering, He would meditate on the lotus feet of the Soul of all souls. Then becoming covered by torrents of love-tears, He appeared like a mountain peak surrounded by cascading waterfalls.

 viluptakah kvacit kampa-pulakancita-vigrahah

 vihvalah skhalitah kvapi / kvacid druta-gatir vrajan 4

   vilupta-akah - eyes blinded by tears; kvacit - sometimes; kampa - trembling; pulaka-ancita - hairs bristling with ecstacy; vigrahah - form; vihvalah - entranced; skhalitah - stumbling; kva api - sometimes; kvacit - sometimes; druta-gati - swift gait; vrajan - going.

  Sometimes His eyes became blinded by tears, His body trembled, and His hairs bristled out of ecstacy. Entranced in consciouness of Krishna, He would sometimes stumble and sometimes run swiftly.

 matta-karindravat kvapi / tejasa vavdhe kvacit

 kvacid gayati govinda / kna kneti sadaram 5

   matta - intoxicated; kari-indra-vat - like a lord of elephants; kva api - sometimes; tejasa - with His power; vavdhe - He increased; kvacit - sometimes; kvacit - sometimes; gayati - He sings; govinda - O Govinda!; kna kna - O Krishna, O Krishna!; iti - thus; sa-adaram - with reverence.

   Sometimes He would expand in power like an intoxicated war elephant, and sometimes with great reverence, He would utter, "Govinda! Krishna! Krishna!"

 tatra deshe harer namashrutva cativa vihvalah

 pravishyaha jale kipra / tyajami deham atmanah 6

   tatra - there; deshe - in the country; hare - of Hari; nama - the name; ashrutva - not hearing; ca - and; ativa - intensely; vihvalah - overwhelmed; pravishya - entering; aham - I; jale - in the water; kipram - swiftly; tyajami - I am giving up; deham - My body; atmanah - own.

  Since Shri Gauranga was unable to hear the names of Shri Hari chanted in that land,  felt great distress and declared, "I shall at once enter this water and give up this body.

 na shnomi harer nama / katha brahmana-sasthitau

 iti nishcitya toyasya / samipa sa vrajan prabhuh 7

   na - not; shnomi - I hear; hare - of Hari; nama - the name; katham - how?; brahmana-sasthitau - in which there are brahmanas; iti - thus; nishcitya - determining; toyasya - of water; samipam - near; sa - He; vrajan - going; prabhuh - the Master.

  "In this land, which is populated by so many brahmanas, why do I not hear chanting of the names of Shri Hari?" Thus, with fixed determination our Prabhu approached the water's edge .

 dadarsha balakan tatra / gava sangha-viharinah

 nityanandavadhutena / shikitan hari-kirttanam 8

   dadarsha - He saw; balakan - boys; tatra - there; gavam - cows; sangha-viharinah - enjoying one another's company; nityananda-avadhutena - by Nityananda Avadhuta; shikitan - taught; hari-kirtanam - chanting the names of Hari.

   Nityananda Avadhuta saw several boys who were tending their cows and sporting amongst one another and he instructed them on the chanting of the names of Shri Hari.

 tatraiko balako 'tyuccair / hari vada hari vada

 iti provaca harena / punah punar udara-dhih 9

   tatra - there; eka - one; balaka - boy; ati-uccai - in a very loud voice; harim vada - chant the names of Hari; harim vada - Hari Bol; iti - thus; provaca - he proclaimed; harena - with exhilaration; punah puna - repeatedly; udara-dhih - broad-minded.

  Amongst them was a boy of prodigious intelligence, who with great exhilaration proclaimed loudly again and again, "Hari Bol! Hari Bol!"

 tat shrutva harshito devah / sarakan deham atmanah

 tatraiva prarurodartto / vihvalash capatad bhuvi 10

   tat - that; shrutva - hearing; harshita - joyous; devah - the Divinity; sarakan - saved; deham - body; atmanah - His own; tatra - there; eva - indeed; praruroda - He wept loudly; arta - afflicted; vihvala - entranced; ca - and; apatat - He fell; bhuvi - on the earth.

  Hearing this, the Lord felt happy and thus decided to desist from from destroying His body.  Then He wept loudly out of feeling anguish of separation from Krishna and fell entranced to the earth.

 santvitash cavadhutena / vndaranyasya varttaya

 kim adbhuta tato gatva / shika cakre maha-matih 11

   santvita - pacified; ca - but; avadhutena - by the avadhuta; vnda-aranyasya - of Vrindavana; vartaya - with news; kim - how?; adbhutam - wonderful; tata - then; gatva - going; shikam cakre - He gave instruction; maha-matih - one having munificent desires.

  Then Gaura Hari was pacified by the avadhuta, who spoke to Him news of Vrindaranya. Oh! what marvellous news that was. And while proceeding on the path, filled with the great and munificent desires of pure devotion, He gave me some instructions:

 navadvipa pragaccha tva / ma praha shri-niketanah

 tato 'ha shoka-duhkhartto / navadvipa vrajann api 12

   navadvipam - to Navadvipa; pragaccha - go swiftly; tvam - you; mam - to me; praha - He said; shri-niketanah - the shelter of the goddess of fortune; tata - then; aham - I; shoka-duhkha - lamentation and grief; arta - afflicted; navadvipam - to Navadvipa; vrajan - going; api - as if.

  "At once yo must depart for Navadvipa," the Lord of Lakshmi said. Then, afflicted by grief and lamentation, I readied myself to leave.

 namo narayanayeti / mad-vakya bhakta-sannidhau

 vaktavya bhavata yena / mamanando bhaviyati 13

   nama - obeisances; narayanaya - to the shelter of all living beings; iti - thus; mat-vakyam - My words; bhakta-sannidhau - in the presence of the devotees; vaktavyam - should be spoken; bhavata - by Your grace; yena - whereby; mama - My; ananda - joy; bhaviyati - there will be.

  The Lord further said, "Your grace must deliver this message from Me to all My devotees, `namo narayanaya, Let us offer our obeisances uno Narayana.' This will bring Me joy."

 shrutva sarvva harer vakya / gaurange nyasta-jivanah

 sthito 'ha paramartto 'pi / gaura-candra-vicetitam 14

   shrutva - hearing; sarvam - all; hare - of Hari; vakyam - words; gaurange - unto Gauranga; nyasta-jivanah - given up my life; sthita - remained; aham - I; parama-arta - extremely disturbed; api - although; gauracandra-vicetitam- - the activities of Gaura Candra.

  I heard this command of Gauranga Hari, but because I had completely given up my life for His sake and thus felt without any shelter other than Him, I simply remained there in His presence, feeling much perturbed.

 jnata bahyopasankranta / nibhta paramadbhutam

 sa-gadgada sa ca praha / shri-kna-nama-mangalam 15

   jnatam - knowing; bahya - external; upasankrantam - reflection; nibhtam - confidential; parama-adbhutam - very wonderful; sa-gadgadam - with faltering voice; sa - He; ca - and; praha - said; shri-kna-nama-mangalam - the auspicious name of Shri Krishna.

  I understood the very astonishing activities of Shri Gaura Candra to be confidential, in that His external state was merely a reflection of His inner trance. Then with a faltering voice the Lord uttered the auspicious name of Krishna.

 hasati skhalati kvapi / kampati gayati kvacit

 roditi vrajati kvapi / patati svapiti kitau 16

   hasati - He laughs; skhalati - He stumbles; kvapi - sometimes; kampati - He trembles; gayati - He sings; kvacit - sometimes; roditi - He cries; vrajati - He wanders about; kvapi - sometimes; patati - He falls; svapiti - He sleeps; kitau - on the earth.

  At times He would laugh, at times His voice became choked, and sometimes He would tremble or sing. At times He would weep or wander here and there, and at times He would fall down and sleep upon the earth.

 gopi-bhavair dasa-bhavair / isha-bhavai kvacit kvacit

 atma-tantrah svatma-ratah / shikayan sva-janan ayam 17

   gopi-bhavai - with moods of a gopi; dasa-bhavai - moods of a servant; isha-bhavai - moods of the Lord; kvacit kvacit - sometimes; atma-tantrah - self-sufficient; sva-atma-ratah - self-satisfied; shikayan - teaching; sva-janan - His own men; ayam - this.

  At times He would taste the moods of a gopi, at other times the moods of a servant of the Lord, and sometimes the moods of the Supreme Lord Himself. Through these moods, the self-sufficient and self-satisfied Lord taught His people lessons.

 ttiya-divasa yavan / na sasmara sva-vigraham

 maha-bhito vyakulo 'ha / ki karomiti cintitah 18

   ttiya-divasam - third day; yavat - until; na - not; sasmara - He remembered; sva-vigraham - His body; maha-bhita - very anxious; vyakula - disturbed; aham - I; kim - what?; karomi - I am doing; iti - thus; cintitah - anxious.

  Until the third day, Gaura Hari continuously lost remembrance of His body. At that, I became very anxious and disturbed, and I worried, "What should I do now?"

 tatah para-dine deha / sasmara madhusudana

 tato 'ham agato geham / ajnaya nyasina guroh 19

   tata - then; para-dine - on the next day; deham - body; sasmara - He became conscious; madhusudana - the killer of Madhu; tata - then; aham - I; agata - came; geham - home; ajnaya - by the order; nyasinam - of renunciants; guroh - of the guru.

  On the following day, Shri Gaura regained consciousness of His external body. Then I took permission from that guru of all renunciants and returned to my home.

 acaryya-gehe shri-knah / para-shvo va gamiyati

 tatraiva bhavata bhavi / darshana tasya nishcitam 20

   acarya-gehe - in the home of the _carya; shri-knah - Chaitanya Prabhu; para-shva - on the day after tomorrow; va - or; gamiyati - He will come; tatra - there; eva - certainly; bhavatam - of your honors; bhavi - there will be; darshanam - vision; tasya - of Him; nishcitam - assuredly.

  There I gave the message to the devotees, "On the day after tomorrow, Shri Krishna Chaitanya will come to the house of the _carya. At that time, your good selves shall have His darshana. This is certain."

 iti shruta shri-hari-kirtanadika / maya ca dtva bhagavat-kta shubham

 samagram etat kathita sumangala / harer guna sarvva-sukha-prada nnam 21

   iti - thus; shrutam - heard; shri-hari-kirtana-adikam - the singing and other activities of Shri Hari; maya - by me; ca - and; dtva - seen; bhagavat-ktam - done by the Lord; shubham - sublime; samagram - completely; etat - this; kathitam - described; su-mangalam - very auspicious; hare - of Hari; gunam - qualities; sarva-sukha-pradam - bestowing all happiness; nnam - for humanity.

  Thus did I see and hear sublime chanting and other pastimes performed by Shri Hari, the all-opulent Personality of Godhead. I have described in full these most auspicious qualities of Hari, which can award all happiness to mankind.

   

   Thus ends the Third Sarga entitled "Wandering in Raha-desha," in the Third Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.
