Chaitanya Deva Beholds
tato bhaktair vtah kno / rama-keli jagama ha
shrutva tatragamad dratu / prabhu-pada
tata - then; bhaktai - with the devotees;
vtah - surrounded; kna - Shri Krishna Chaitanya; rama-kelim - the town of
Rama-keli; jagama - He went; ha - indeed; shrutva - hearing; tatra - there;
agamat - He came; dratum - to see; prabhu-padam - the feet of the Master;
sanatanah - Sanatana Gosvami.
Then surrounded by the bhaktas, Shri Krishna
went to the town of Ramakeli. When Sanatana heard of this, he came to see the
feet of Mahaprabhu.
prabhu dtva prita-manah / prapatan dharani-tale
dashanagre tna dhtva / sanuja praha keshavam 2
prabhum - the Master; dtva - seeing;
prita-manah - joyous heart; prapatan - fell flat; dharani-tale - on the earth
floor; dashana-agre - between his teeth; tnam - grass; dhtva - holding;
sa-anuja - with his younger brother; praha - he said; keshavam - to the Lord
who has beautiful hair.
Seeing the Lord, his heart became much
engladdened. Sanatana and his younger brother, Rupa, fell to the earth before
Mahaprabhu, holding grass in their teeth,
and they addressed Gaura Keshava:
mad-vidho nasti papatma / naparadhi ca kashcana
parihare 'pi lajja me / ki bruve puruottama 3
mat-vidha - of my category; na asti - there
is not; papa-atma - a sinful soul; na - not; aparadhi - offender; ca - and;
kashcana - anyone; parihare - having given up; api - even; lajja - shame; me -
my; kim - what?; bruve - I say; purua-uttama - O best of persons.
"There is nowhere a sinful person nor
such an offender as us. And although I have now abandoned all shame to speak to
You, still what have I that is worth saying, O best of persons?"
sva-pada tasya shirasi / dhtva praha janarddanah
vndavana-nivasi tva / satya satya na sashayah
sva-padam - His foot; tasya - his; shirasi -
on the head; dhtva - holding; praha - He said; jana-ardanah - who inspires the
hearts of mankind; vndavana-nivasi - resident of Vrindavana; tvam - you; satyam
satyam - the unequivocal truth; na - not; sashayah - doubt.
Lord Janardana placed His own foot upon
Sanatana's head and declared, "Truly! Truly! Without doubt, you are a
resident of Vrindavana!
mathura gantum icchami / tvaya sarddha yatha-sukham
lupta-tirthasya prakatya / tatha vndavanasya
mathuram - Krishna's birth-place; gantum -
to go; icchami - I desire; tvaya - with you; sardham - in company; yatha-sukham
- if it pleases you; lupta-tirthasya - of the lost holy places; prakatyam -
revealing; tatha - so; vndavanasya - of Vrindavana; ca - and.
"If you wish, I shall go with you to
Mathura Manala, to reveal the lost tirthas of Mathura and Vrindavana.
karttum arhasi tat sarvva / mat-kpato bhaviyati
bhakti-svarupini sakat /
kartum - to do; arhasi - you ought; tat - that;
sarvam - all; mat-kpata - by my mercy; bhaviyati - it shall be;
bhakti-svarupini - the original form of devotion; sakat - in person;
prema-bhakti - devotional love of God; pradayini - bestowing.
"It is your duty to accomplish all of
this. Certainly by My mercy it will come to pass, for that mercy is devotional
service personified, the bestower of prema-bhakti."
shrutva praha maha-buddhih / sanujah shri-sanatanah
aramah kna-candrasya / ramya vndavana shubham
shrutva - hearing; praha - he said;
maha-buddhih - highly intelligent; sa-anujah - with his younger brother, Rupa
Gosvami; shri-sanatanah - Sanatana Gosvami; aramah - pleasure garden;
kna-candrasya - of the moon-like Lord Krishna; vnda-vanam - the forest of
Vrinda; shubham - sublime.
After hearing this, the highly intelligent
Sanatana and his younger brother then said, "Vrindavana is the pleasure
garden of Shri Krishna Candra. It is delightful and sublime.
shri-radhaya saha kno / yatra kridati sarvvada
agamya yogibhir nitya / deva-siddhair
shri-radhaya - by Shri Radha; saha -
accompanied; kna - the all-attractive; yatra - where; kridati - sports; sarvada
- eternally; agamyam - unattainable; yogibhi - by the yogis; nityam - forever;
deva-siddhai - by divinities and perfect beings; nara-itaraih - by men and
"Shri Radha and Krishna forever sport
there. That place is unattainable even by yogis, devas, perfected beings, men
nirjjana taj-janadyaish ca / gatva ki syat sukhaya ca
tvat-kpa-shastra-rupena / chittva me
raja-patradi-rupa ca / prapayya nija-sannidhim
shakti-sancarana krtva / kuru kna yatha-sukham
nirjanam - solitary; tat-jana - your
followers; adyai - and with others; ca - and; gatva - going; kim - what?; syat
- it may be; sukhaya - for happiness; ca - and; tvat-kpa - Your mercy;
shastra-rupena - in the form of a weapon; chittva - having cut; me - my;
dha-shnkhalam - strong shackles; raja-patra - king's minister; adi - and so on;
rupam - form; ca - and; prapayya - achieving; nija-sannidhim - own presence;
shakti - of energies; sancaranam - empowerment; krtva - doing; kuru - do; kna -
O Krishna; yatha-sukham - as it pleases You.
"Dear Lord, if You go to that solitary place in the company of so many followers, what happiness will You feel there?
O Shri Krishna Chaitanya, with the sword of
Your mercy, You have cut the strong shackles of my ministerial post and so
forth which bound me to sasara. Now that I have obtained Your direct
association, if it pleases You, kindly empower me to fulfill Your
tad-vakyamtam eva hi / pitva praha hasan prabhuh
bhavan-manoratha knah / sada puna kariyati 11
tat - his; vakya-amtam - words of nectar;
evam - thus; hi - indeed; pitva - having drunk; praha - He said; hasan -
smiling; prabhuh - the Master; bhavat - your grace; mana-ratham - desire; knah
- the all-attractive; sada - always; punam - fulfill; kariyati - He will do.
After drinking the ambrosia of Shri
Sanatana's words, Prabhu replied laughingly, "Certainly Shri Krishna
always satisfies every desire of His great bhaktas like your good self."
eva ta parisantoya / kno natya-sthala gatah
rajanya cintayam asa / satyam ukta na sashayah
sanatanena ktina / tan-mukhena ca madhavah
mam aha nirjjana satya / vndaranya sudurlabham
evam - thus; tam - him; parisantoya - fully
satisfying; kna - who puts an end to birth and death; natya-sthalam - to the
dancing pavilion; gatah - went; rajanyam - at night; cintayam asa - He thought;
satyam - the truth; uktam - said; na sashayah - without doubt; sanatanena - by
Sanatana; ktina - by the learned; tat-mukhena - through his mouth; ca - and;
madhavah - the personification of madhu, honey; mam - to me; aha - he said;
nirjanam - solitary; satyam - true; vnda-aranyam - the forest of Vrinda;
su-durlabham - most difficult to obtain.
After fully satisfying heart of Sanatana,
Shri Krishna Chaitanya then went to Kanai Natashala. That night He thought,
"The statement of the learned Sanatana is undoubtedly true. Lord Madhava
has spoken to Me through his mouth. Alas! Truly the solitary forest of Vrinda
is very difficult to attain.
loka-sanghair gate nitya / duhkham eva na sashayah
sanga tyakta gamiyami / dakina cadhuna vraje
loka-sanghai - with groups of people; gate -
to have gone; nityam - always; duhkham - unhappiness; eva - certainly; na -
not; sashayah - a doubt; sangam - groups; tyakta - giving up; gamiyami - I
shall go; dakinam - south; ca - and; adhuna - now; vraje - I am going.
"Without doubt, it is always a source of
botheration to travel with many people on pilgrimage. Only after giving up this
group of followers shall I go to Vrindavana. Presently I shall proceed
eva vicaryya bhagavan / sandrananda-rasatmakah
pratar utthaya shri-krishno /
evam - thus; vicarya - considering; bhagavan
- the all-opulent Lord; sandra-ananda - of condensed bliss; rasa - mellow;
atmakah - personification; prata - early; utthaya - rising; shri-krishna - the
all-attractive; nityananda-samanvitah - accompanied by Nityananda.
So considering, Bhagavan Shri Krishna, the
embodiment of condensed ananda-rasa, rose early that morning with Nityananda.
advaitacaryya-nilaya / jagama sa-tvara muda
tena sampujitas tatra / sthito
advaita-acarya - the incarnation of a
devotee; nilayam - to the abode; jagama - He went; sa-tvaram - with speed; muda
- joyously; tena - by Him; sampujita - nicely worshipped; tatra - there; sthita
- staying; bhakta-sukha - of happiness; pradah - the bestower.
In a joyous mood, He travelled speedily to
the abode of Advaitacarya. Engladdening that bhakta's heart, He rested there
and was well honored by Him.
acyutenapy avirata / kautukananda-varddhanah
parihasa-rasamodi / hari-dasa-dayaparah 17
acyutena - with Acyutananda; api - very;
aviratam - constantly; kautuka - enthusiasm; ananda-vardhanah - increasing joy;
parihasa - joking; rasa-amodi - enjoying the mellows; hari-dasa - to Haridasa;
daya-aparah - unsurpassed mercy.
The Lord expanded ceaselessly in blissful
eagerness, delighting in joking mellows with Advaita's son, Acyutananda. He
also showed incomparable mercy to hakura Haridasa.
hari-sankirttana ratrau / kurvvan sa bhakta-vetitah
nanartta parama-prito / nityananda-samanvitah
hari - of Hari's names; sankirtanam -
congregational chanting; ratrau - at night; kurvan - making; sa - He;
bhakta-vetitah - surrounded by devotees; nanarta - He danced; parama-prita -
supreme love; nityananda-samanvitah - with Nityananda.
At night, surrounded by His devotees, He
performed hari-nama-sankirtana, dancing with Nityananda in the spirit of
matara bhakta-vnda ca / mat-bhakta-shiromanih
navadvipat samanayya / tad-duhkha parimocayan
mataram - mother; bhakta-vndam - the
multitude of devotees; ca - and; mat-bhakta - devoted to His mother;
shira-manih - crest-jewel; navadvipat - from Navadvipa; samanaya - summoned;
tat-duhkham - their sorrows; parimocayan - liberating.
That crest-jewel among devoted sons then
called for His mother and all the Navadvipa-bhaktas. Thus they become fully
freed from all melancholy.
taya pacitam anna ca / catur-vvidhya yathocitam
bhaktahlada-shatair bhukto /
taya - by her; pacitam - cooked; annam -
foods; ca - and; catu-vidhyam - of four kinds; yatha-ucitam - according to
suitability; bhakta-ahlada-shatai - with hundreds of blissful devotees; bhukta
- enjoyed; nityananda - personified eternal bliss; kutuhali - celebrant.
In accordance with Shaci-nandana's
requirements, Shaci Devi cooked the four kinds of food, and the Lord enjoyed
them in the company of hundreds of blissful bhaktas, of whom Nityananda was the
eva shri-bhakta-vargana / grame grame ghe ghe
bhuktva pitva sukha ktva / yayau
evam - in the same way; shri-bhakta-varganam
- of the various groups of devotees; grame grame - from town to town; ghe ghe -
from home to home; bhuktva - eating; pitva - drinking; sukham - happily; ktva -
having done; yayau - He went; shri-purua-uttamam - (abode of the ultimate
Person) Jagannatha Puri.
In the same way, from home to home, from
village to village, to wherever His bhaktas dwelled, Mahaprabhu went accepting
food and drink and awarding joy. Then He departed for Shri Purushottama Dhama.
shriman-nityananda-ramah / panditah shri-gadadharah
shrimat-nityananda-ramah - the avatara of
Balarama; panditah - the learned scholar; shri-gadadharah - the personified
devotional energy; gaura-prema - love of Gaura; sudha-matta - intoxicated by
the nectar; gauranga - the golden Lord; prana - life-breath; vallabhah -
Shriman Nityananda Rama and Panita Shri
Gadadhara were intoxicated by the nectarean love they felt for Gauranga.
Indeed, that love was the vital energy which sustained their life.
tabhyam anugatah kno / gopinatha dadarsha ha
sakan nanda-kumara ca / shri-vashi-vadana
tabhyam - with those two; anugatah -
followed; kna - Krishna Chaitanya; gopinatham - the Deity of Gopinatha, the
milk-sweet thief; dadarsha - He saw; ha - indeed; sakat - in Person;
nanda-kumaram - the son of Nanda; ca - and; shri-vashi-vadanam - playing on the
bamboo flute; vibhum - the all-pervasive.
Followed by them, Krishna Chaitanya went
take darshana of Shri Kshira-Cora Gopinatha, who is the all-pervading player of
the bamboo flute, the son of Nanda Maharaja in person.
gopi-manorathamodi / samalingya sthito harih
dtva gadadharas tatra / gaura-knatmaka sukhi
gopi - of the gopis; mana-ratha - the
desire; amodi - taking pleasure; samalingya - warmly embracing; sthita -
standing; harih - the remover of sin; dtva - seeing; gadadhara - the ahladini
energy, pleasure potency personified; tatra - there; gaura-kna-atmakam - the
two Lords Gaura and Krishna being one Self; sukhi - happy.
Delighting in Gopinatha in the mood of the
gopis, Gaura Hari embraced Him, and at that moment Gadadhara's heart grew happy
as he saw Gaura and Krishna as a single identity.
sakad radha-svarupo 'sau / ta dhtva nija-vakasi
samaniya kautukena / sthapayam asa nishcalam
sakat - in person; radha-svarupa - the
original form of Radha; asau - Gadadhara; tam - Him; dhtva - held; nija-vakasi
- to his chest; samaniya - taking; kautukena - out of eagerness; sthapayam asa
- He replaced; nishcalam - unmoving.
Since Shri Gadadharah in his original form,
is Shrimati Radharani, Herself, he also eagerly drew Gopinatha to his chest,
and then left Him standing motionless.
tasya pacitam anna ca / gopi-nathavasheitam
gada-bhg gaura-candrasya / samipe pulakavtah
tasya - by him; pacitam - cooked; annam -
foods; ca - and; gopi-natha - of the Lord of the gopis; avasheitam - remnants;
gada-bht - Gadadhara; gaura-candrasya - of Gaura Candra; samipe - near;
pulaka-avtah - covered by erect hairs.
Gadadhara cooked for Gopinatha. Then, with
his hairs bristling out of ecstacy, he brought Gopinatha's remnants before
tenanumodito harat / satra-traya-samanvitam
prasada gopinathasya / vibhajya bubhuje pura
tena - by him; anumodita - permitted; harat
- out of jubilation; satra - parts; traya - three; samanvitam - with; prasadam
- mercy-food; gopinathasya - of the Lord of the gopis; vibhajya - dividing;
bubhuje - He ate; pura - first.
As approved by Gaura, Gadadhara happily
divided the prasada of Gopinatha into three portions. Shriman Mahaprabhu ate
bhojayitva sva-hastena / nityanandaya ca punah
gadadharah svaya capi / bubhuje rasa-kautuki
bhojayitva - feeding; sva-hastena - with his
hand; nitya-anandaya - to the ever blissful Lord; ca - and; punah - further;
gadadharah; svayam - himself; ca api - also; bubhuje - ate; rasa-kautuki -
eager for transcendental mellows.
Gadadhara fed the prasada to Nityananda with
his own hand. Then being eager to taste rasa, Gadadhara also delighted in those
tatash ca gaurangah sukhopavito / gadadharenapi svaya rasa-jnah
rasotsuko rasa-rasena matto / ramoparame
tata - then; ca - and; gaurangah - the
Golden Lord; sukha-upavita - sitting comfortably; gadadharena - by Gadadhara;
api - indeed; svayam - spontaneously; rasa-jnah - wise in the rasas;
rasa-utsuka - eager for news of the rasa-lila; rasa-rasena - by the mellows of
the rasa-lila; matta - intoxicated; rama-uparame - ceasing all external
pleasures, or as Nityananda rested; rasa - who is the complete form of
transcendental mellows; rama - of the reservoir of pleasure; rame - delighting.
While Nityananda Rama rested, Shri Gauranga
became pleasantly seated in the company of Gadadhara, and out of spontaneous
attraction that connoisseur of rasa
eagerly heard from him of the rasa-lila. Thus inebriated by
madhurya-rasa, Gaura left the world of externals and solely delighted in the
reservoir of all delight and the form of all rasa, Lord Gopinatha.
Thus ends the Eighteenth Sarga entitled "Chaitanya Deva Beholds Lord Gopinatha," in the Third Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.
