 Ninth Sarga

shri-lakshmy-udvaha

Shri Gauranga's Marriage with Shrimati Lakshmi Devi

 tatah papatha sa punah / shriman shri-vinu-panditat

 sudarshanat panditac ca / shri-ganga-dasa-panditat 1

   tatah - thereafter; papatha - He studied; sah - He; punah - again; shriman shri-vinu-panditat - from the eminent scholar named Shri Vishnu Panita; sudarshanat panditat - from Shri Sudarshana Panita; ca - and; shri-ganga-dasa-panditat - from Shri Gangadasa Panita.

  Thereafter Vishvambhara made further studies under the eminent scholars Shri Vishnu Panita, Sudarshana Panita and Gangadasa Pandita.

 brahmanebhyo dadau vidyam / ye pandita mahattamah

 tea mahopakaraya / tebhyo vidya ghitavan 2

   brahmanebhyah - to the brahmanas; dadau - He gave; vidyam - knowledge; ye - who; panditah - learned men; mahattamah - great men; team - of them; maha-upakaraya - for their great benefit; tebhyah - from them; vidyam - knowledge; ghitavan - took.

  He gave knowledge to those highly learned brahmanas, and for their great benefit He accepted knowledge from them.

 loka-shikam anucaran / maya-manuja-vigrahah

 tatah pathan panditeu / shrimat-sudarshaneu ca 3

   loka-shikam - teaching the world; anucaran - following; maya-manuja-vigrahah - the illusory form of a man; tatah - then; pathan - studying; panditeu - amongst the scholars; shrimat-sudarshaneu - Shri Sudarshana and the others; ca - and.

   In order to instruct humanity, Shri Hari accepted a man-like form apparently made of the illusory energy, and thus followed the path of study under the direction Shri Sudarshana and the other Panitas.

 sa-tirthaih prahasan vipraih / hasadbhih parihasakam

 uvaca bangajair vakyai / rasa-jnah sa-smitananah 4

   sa-tirthaih - on pilgrimage; prahasan - laughing; vipraih - with the learned brahmanas; hasadbhih - with joking; parihasakam - jesting; uvaca - said; bangajaih - with Bengali; vakyaih - with words; rasa-jnah - conversant in the rasas; sa-smitananah - with His smiling face.

  He who is conversant in every rasa would with merrily tell jokes in the Bengali language with brahmanas traveling on pilgrimage, and He also laughed as they told amusing tales.

 tatah kalena kiyatacaryasya vana-malinah

 jagama purya ta dratum / kautukat pranatasya sah 5

 

 abhaya gacchatacarya / harina dadshe pathi

 vallabhacarya-duhita / sakhi-jana-samavta 6

   tatah - then; kalena - by time; kiyata - after so much; acaryasya - of the _carya; vana-malinah - of Vanamali; jagama - went; puryam - in the city; tam - him; dratum - to see; kautukat - out of curiosity; pranatasya - for offering obeisances; sah - He; abhaya - having spoken; gacchata - while going; acarya - the _carya; harina - by Lord Hari; dadshe - saw; pathi - on the path; vallabhacarya-duhita - the daughter of Vallabha _carya; sakhi-jana - girl friends; samavta - surrounded.


  After some time had passed, being eager to see Gaura went to the home of _carya Vanamali, the matchmaker, with purpose of accepting a spouse. While Shri Hari respectfully bade farewell and chatted with the _carya, He saw the daughter of Shri Vallabha _carya on the footpath surrounded by her girlfriends.

 snanartha jahnavi-toye / gacchanti ruciranana

 dtva ta tadshi jnatva / manasa janma-karanam 7

   snana-artham - for the purpose of bathing; jahnavi-toye - in the water of the Ganga; gacchanti - going; rucira-anana - attractive face; dtva - having seen; tam - her; tadshim - such a lady; jnatva - knew; manasa - in His heart; janma-karanam - the purpose for His birth.

  That lady of radiant countenance was walking to the Jahnavi to take her bath. When Shri Hari saw that maiden, in His heart He recognized her to be the very purpose for His birth.

 tasya jagama nilaya / svam eva sva-janaih saha

 shriman vishvambharo devo / vidya-rasa-kutuhali 8

   tasya - His; jagama - He went; nilayam - residence; svam - own; eva - indeed; sva-janaih - with His friends; saha - with; shriman vishvambharah - the glorious Vishvambhara; devah - the Lord; vidya-rasa-kutuhali - eager for the mellows of scholarship.

  Then illustrious Vishvambhara departed for His residence delighting with His companions in talk of vidya-rasa.

 apare dyuh punas tatra / vanamali dvijottamah

 acaryah shri-harer geham / agatya pranaman shacim 9

   apare dyuh - on the next day; punah - again; tatra - there; vanamali - Vanamali _carya; dvija-uttamah - excellent brahmana; acaryah - teacher; shri-hareh - of Shri Hari; geham - home; agatya - coming; pranaman - offering homage; shacim - to Shaci Mata.

  On the next day, the transcendental brahmana, Vanamali came to the home of Shri Gaura Hari, and bowed respectfully to Shaci Devi.

 uvaca madhura vani / shrimad-vishvambharasya te

 sutasyodvahanarthaya / kanya sura-sutopamam

 vallabhacarya-varyasya / varayasva yadicchasi 10

   uvaca - he said; madhuram - sweet; vanim - words; shrimat-vishvambharasya - of Shri Vishvambhara; te - your; sutasya - of your son; udvahana - marrying; arthaya - for the purpose of; kanyam - your daughter; sura-suta - daughter of a god; upamam - like; vallabhacarya - Vallabha _carya; varyasya - of the excellent person; varayasva - choose; yadi - if; icchasi - you desire.

  He spoke sweetly to her thus, "If you wish to get your son Vishvambhara married, I suggest that you select Lakshmi Devi, the goddess-like daughter of that excellent brahmana, Vallabhacarya."

 etat shrutva shaci praha / balo 'sau mama putrakah

 pitra vihinah pathatu / tatrodyogo vidhiyatam 11

   etat - this; shrutva - hearing; shaci - Shaci Mata; praha - said; balah - boy; asau - He; mama - my; putrakah - son; pitra - by His father; vihinah - without; pathatu - He must study; tatra - there; udyogah - efforts; vidhiyatam - should be placed.

  Hearing this, Shaci Devi replied, "My son is but a fatherless boy. At present His efforts must be directed towards his studies."

 iti shrutva vacas tasya / nati-hta-mana yayau

 acaryo dtavas tatra / pathi kna mudanvitam 12

   iti - thus; shrutva - hearing; vacah - words; tasyah - her; na - not; ati-hta - very joyful; mana - mind; yayau - went; acaryah - the _carya; dtavan - saw; tatra - there; pathi - on the path; knam - Lord Krishna; muda - happiness; anvitam - filled with.

  Hearing her words, the _carya went his way somewhat dejected. But after walking a while on the path he caught sight of GauraKrishna whose heart was brimming over with gladness.

 bhagavas ta pranamyashu / samalingya sunirbharam

 kva bhavan adya gantasi / papraccha madhura vacah 15

   bhagavan - the Supreme Lord; tam - to him; pranamya - bowing down; ashu - swiftly; samalingya - having embraced; su-nirbharam - very tightly; kva - where?; bhavan - your honor; adya - today; gantasi - you will go; papraccha - he inquired; madhuram - sweet; vacah - words.

  Gaura Bhagavan at once bowed to Vanamali and embracing him very firmly, he inquired in a sweet voice, "Where is your honor going today?"

 sa aha matush carana / tava dtva samagatah

 nivedita maya tasyai / tavodvahaya tatra sa 14

 shraddha na vidhate tena / vimanah savrajamy aham

 ity ukte nottara datva / prahasya prayayau harih 15

   sah - he; aha - said; matuh - of Your mother; caranam - feet; tava - Your; dtva - seen; samagatah - come; niveditam - offering; maya - by me; tasyai - unto her; tava - Your; udvahaya - for marriage; tatra - there; sa - she; shraddham - faith; na - not; vidhate -she placed; tena - for this reason; vimanah - dejected; savrajami - I am going; aham - I; iti - thus; ukte - having said; na - not; uttaram - answer; datva - having given; prahasya - laughing; prayayau - went forth; harih - Shri Hari.

  Vanamali replied, "I have just come from seeing the feet of Your mother. There I made a suggestion to her regarding Your marriage, but she had no faith in my proposal. For this reason I am now walking despondent-ly." Gaura Hari made no commment on the _carya's words but walked on laughing.

 agatya svashrama praha / matara ki tvayoditam

 acaryaya vacah so 'pi / vimanah pathi gacchati 16

   agatya - arriving; sva-ashramam - His own ashrama; praha - said; mataram - O mother; kim - why?; tvaya - by you; uditam - said; acaryaya - to the _carya; vacah - statement; sah - he; api - and; vimanah - depressed; pathi - on the path; gacchati - goes.

   Arriving back at His own ashrama, Gaura said, "Mata, what did you say to the _carya that made him so depressed as he walked on the path?"

 katha na tasya sapritah / kta matah priyoktibhih

 etaj jnatva sutasyashu / matam apta-jana punah 17

 acarya tvaraya netu / preayam asa sa shubha

 acaryah sahasagatya / namasktvabravid idam 18

   katham - how?; na - not; tasya - of him; sapritah - well-loved; kta - done; matah - O mother; priya-uktibhih - by dear sayings; etat - this; jnatva - knowing; sutasya - of the son; ashu - soon; matam - mind; apta-janam - a trusted person; punah - again; acaryam - the _carya; tvaraya - swiftly; netum - to bring; preayam asa - sent; sa - she; shubha - blessed; acaryah - the teacher; sahasa - speedily; agatya - having come; namasktva - having offered obeisances; abravit - said; idam - this.

  "Why did you not make him feel well-loved by offering pleasing words?" Suddenly His blessed mother became aware of the state of her son's mind, and she sent a trustworthy person to call back the _carya. Quickly Vanamali returned and after respectfully bowing to her, he spoke thus:

 katham ishvari mamajnam / akarot tad bravitu me

 saprahto vacah shrutva / bhavatyah sannidhav aham 19

   katham - what?; ishvari - O queen; mam - me; ajnam - order; akarot - did; tat - that; bravitu - just say; me - to me; saprahtah - very happy; vacah - statement; shrutva - having heard; bhavatyah - of your good self; sannidhau - in the vicinity; aham - I.

  "Dear queen! What is your order? Please instruct me. Upon receiving your message, I have become most elated and returned to your gracious presence."

 evam ukte tatah praha / ta shaci yat tvaya vacah

 udhvahartha tu kathita / tat kartu tvam iharhasi 20

   evam - thus; ukte - having spoken; tatah - then; praha - she said; tam - to him; shaci - Shrimati Shaci Devi; yat - what; tvaya - by you; vacah - words; udhvaha-artham - for the purpose of marriage; tu - but; kathitam - said; tat - that; kartum - to do; tvam - you; iha - now; arhasi - ought.

   At this, she replied, "Kindly carry out the suggestion which you made to me earlier concerning the marriage of Vishvambhara.

 tva suhd-vatsalo 'tiva / sutasya svayam eva tat

 pura prokta sneha-vashat / tatra tva ki vadamy aham 21

   tvam - you; suht - a good friend; vatsalah - affectionate; ativa - very much; sutasya - of my son; svayam - spontaneous; eva - indeed; tat - that; pura - formerly; proktam - spoken; sneha-vashat - controlled by affection; tatra - there; tvam - you; kim - what; vadami - I say; aham - I.

  "Of your own accord you are acting as a good and affectionate friend of my son. Whatever I said before to you was also motivated by love for my son. What more can I say?"

 etat shrutva vacas tasyah / prahacaryo naman vacah

 ishvari tvad-vaco nitya / karomi shirasa vahan 22

 etat - this; shrutva - hearing; vacah - words; tasyah - of her; praha - said; acaryah - the _carya; naman - bowing; vacah - words; ishvari - O queen; tvat-vacah - your words; nityam - always; karomi - I do; shirasa - with my head; vahan - carrying.

  Hearing her words, the _carya bowed his head and said, "O queen, I shall ever carry out your orders, bearing them on my head.

 ity uktva prayayau tatra / vallabho mishra-sattamah

 yatra tithati tatraiva / so 'py udyamya tvaranvitah 23

 dideshasanam aniya / svayam eva yatha-vidhi

 misrah papraccha vinayad / acarya-vanamalinam 24

   iti - thus; uktva - having spoken; prayayau - went off; tatra - there; vallabhah - Shri Vallabha; mishra-sattamah - the best of scholars; yatra - where; tithati - he stays; tatra - there; eva - surely; sah - he; api - and; udyamya - rising up; tvara-anvitah - full of speed; didesha - he directed; asanam - seat; aniya - brought; svayam - spontaneously; eva - indeed; yatha-vidhim - according to etiquette; mishrah - the scholar; papraccha - inquired; vinayat - out of respect; acarya-vanamalinam - of Vanamali _carya.

  So saying, Vanamali went to Shri Vallabha's house. That noble brahmana quickly stood up and showed him to a seat, as etiquette requires. Then with respect he inquired from Vanamali _carya about his welfare:

 mamanugraha evatra / tavagamana-karanam

 anyad vasti kiyat karya / tad ajna kartum arhasi 25

   mama - my; anugrahah - mercy; eva - surely; atra - here; tava - your; agamana-karanam - the cause of your coming; anya - other; va - or; asti - there is; kiyat - how much?; karyam - service; tat - that; ajnam - order; kartum - to make; arhasi - you ought.

  "Your reason for coming is surely to show me mercy. However, if there is any service that I can render you, please order me."

 evam ukte tatah prahacarya shnu vaco mama

 mishra-purandara-sutah / shri-vishvambhara-panditah 26

 

 sa eva tava kanyaya / yogyah sad-guna-sashrayah

 patis tena vadamy adya / dehi tasmai suta shubham 27

   evam - thus; ukte - having spoken; tatah - then; praha - he said; acarya - O teacher; shnu - hear; vacah - words; mama - my; mishra purandara - titled Purandara; sutah - the son; shri-vishvambhara - Shri Vishvambhara; panditah - the scholar; sah - He; eva - indeed; tava - your; kanyayah - of the daughter; yogyah - suitable; sat-guna - good qualities; sashrayah - shelter; patih - husband; tena - therefore; vadami - I say; adya - today; dehi - give; tasmai - to Him; sutam - daughter; shubham - lovely.

  When Vallabha had spoken thus, Vanamali _carya replied,"O _carya, please hear my words! The son of Mishra Purandara named Shri Vishvambhara Panita, who is an abode of divine qualities, is the suitable husband for your daughter Lakshmi. Therefore I declare that today you should present your lovely daughter to Him."

 tat shrutva vacana tasya / mishrah karya vicarya ca

 uvaca shruyata bhagya-vashad etad bhaviyati 28

   tat - that; shrutva - hearing; vacanam - statement; tasya - his; mishrah - the scholar; karyam - duty; vicarya - considering; ca - and; uvaca - said; shruyatam - hear; bhagya - good fortune; vashat - by the influence; etat - this; bhaviyati - will be.

  Hearing this statement, the scholar considered his duty and said, "Hear me. By the power of divine Providence this marriage must indeed come to pass.

 maya dhana-vihinena / kincid datu na shakyate

 kanyakaiva pradatavya / tatrajna kartum arhasi 29

   maya - by me; dhana-vihinena - bereft of wealth; kincit - any; datum - to give; na - not; shakyate - it is possible; kanyaka - daughter; eva - surely; pradatavya - should be given; tatra - there; ajnam - order; kartum - to do; arhasi - you ought.

  "But I have no wealth, and thus it is not possible for me to give any dowry. I can give only my my daughter. Therefore kindly offer me some advice in this matter.

 yadi va me harih prito / bhagavan duhitur bhavet

 tadaiva me sambhavati / jamata panditottamah 30

   yadi - if; va - or; me - of me; harih - Lord Hari; pritah - dear; bhagavan - the Supreme Lord; duhituh - on account of my daughter; bhavet - it may be; tada - then; eva - certainly; me - my; sambhavati - become; jamata - son-in-law; pandita - scholar; uttamah - the excellent.

  "If Shri Hari, the Master of all opulence, is pleased with me then by means of my daughter this best of scholars can certainly become my son-in-law.

 ratnena mukta-sayogo / gunenaiva yatha bhavet

 yatha bhavad-gunenaivanayor yogo bhaviyati 31

   ratnena - with a jewel; mukta-sayogah - joined with a pearl; gunena - by quality; eva - certainly; yatha - as; bhavet - may be; yatha - as; bhavat - your; gunena - by quality; eva - certainly; anayoh - of these two; yogah - union; bhaviyati - it shall be.

  "But as a pearl is joined with a gem by means of a valuable thread, so these two can be joined in wedlock only through your invaluable connec-tion."

 ity ukte parama-prita / acaryah praha sadaram

 bhavad-vinaya-vatsalyat / sarva sampadyate shubham 32

   iti - thus; ukte - having spoken; parama-pritah - very pleased; acaryah - the _carya; praha - said; sa-adaram - with respect; bhavat - your; vinaya - humility; vatsalyat - on account of affection; sarvam - all; sampadyate - it comes about; shubham - auspicious.

  When Vallabha spoke thus, Vanamali became very pleased and replied respectfully, "Because of your humility and affection for your daughter, everything must surely come about auspiciously."

 ity uktva punar agamya / sarva shacyai nyavedayat

 acaryo gaura-candrasya / vivahananda-nirvtah 33

   iti - thus; uktva - speaking; punah - again; agamya - coming; sarvam - all; shacyai - unto Shaci Devi; nyavedayat - made known; acaryah - the _carya; gaura-candrasya - of Gaura Candra; vivaha - marriage; ananda - bliss; nirvtah - immersed.

  So saying, he again returned to Shaci Devi and informed her of all that had happened. Just by thinking of Gaura Candra's wedding, the _carya became immersed in bliss.

 etat sarva saviditva / suta provaca sa shaci

 samayo 'ya kuruvatra / tata vaivahika vidhim 34

   etat - that; sarvam - all; saviditva - having known; sutam - son; provaca - told; sa - she; shaci - Shaci Mata; samayah - time; ayam - this; kuruva - perform; atra - now; tata - dear son; vaivahikam - wedding; vidhim - ritual.

  Upon being apprised of everything, Shaci Mata spoke to her son, "Dear boy, the time has now come for You to take a wife in accordance with the principles of dharma.

 tat shrutva vacana matur / vimshya manasa harih

 ajna tasyah purasktya / dravyany ashu samaharat 35

   tat - that; shrutva - hearing; vacanam - words; matuh - of His mother; vimshya - considering; manasa - in His mind; harih - the remover of sin; ajnam - order; tasyah - of her; purasktya - honoring; dravyani - materials; ashu - quickly; samaharat - collected.

  Hearing this instruction from His mother, Gaura Hari considered them in His heart. Then honoring her order, He quickly collected the materials for the ceremony.

 tato vaivahike kale / mangale sad-gunashraye

 sarveam eva shubha-de / mdanga-panavahate 36

   tatah - then; vaivahike - at the wedding; kale - time; mangale - auspicious; sat-guna - good qualities; ashraye - taken shelter of; sarveam - of all; eva - indeed; shubha-de - bestowing auspiciousness; mdanga-panava - mdangas and kettledrums; ahate - beaten.

  At an auspicious moment for marriage, in which all good qualities took shelter, when mdangas were deftly played and kettledrums beaten...

 bhu-deva-gana-sangasya / veda-dhvani-ninadite

 dipa-mala-patakadyair / alankta-dig-antare 37

   bhu-deva-gana - the assembly of brahmanas; sangasya - of the association; veda-dhvani - Vedic mantras; ninadite - sounded; dipa - lights; mala - garlands; pataka - flags; adyaih - et cetera; alankta - decorated; dik-antare - in all directions.

  ...when Vedic mantras were intoned by the assembly of brahmanas, when all directions were decorated by lamps, garlands of flowers, flags, festoons and so forth...

 deva-darv-aguru-shira-candanadi-pradhupite

 adhivasa haresh cakre / vivaha dvija-sattamah 38

   deva-daru - pine; aguru - aloes; shira-candana - sandalwood; adi - and so forth; pradhupite - perfumed; adhivasam - preliminary marriage rituals; hareh - of Gaura Hari; cakre - conducted; vivaham - the wedding; dvija-sattamah - the best of brahmanas.

  ...then did saintly brahmanas began the adhivasa ceremony to purify the household of Shri Hari with pine scent, aguru, scented grasses, sandal and other pleasing fragances.

   Thus ends the Ninth Sarga entitled "Shri Gauranga's Marriage with Shrimati Lakshmi Devi" in the First Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.
