Chapter 6

 

 

Text 1

 

 

sva-bhavam eke kavayo vadanti

     kalam tathanye parimuhyamanah

devasyaisa mahima tu loke

     yenedam bhramyate brahma-cakram

 

     sva-bhavam-existing because of their own nature; eke-some; kavayah-philosophers; vadanti-say; kalam-time; tatha-in the same way; anye-others; parimuhyamanah-bewildered; devasya-of the Supreme Personality of Godhead; esah-this; mahima-glory; tu-but; loke-in the material world; yena-by whom; idam-this; bhramyate-is moving; brahma-cakram-cycle of repeated material existance.

 

 

     Some thinkers say the material universe is self-manifest. Other bewildered men say time created the universe. The truth is the universe turns by the power of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

 

 

Text 2

 

 

yenavrtam nityam idam hi sarvam

     jnah kala-karo guni sarva-vid yah

tenesitam karma vivartate ha

     prthvy-ap-tejo-'nila-khani cintyam

 

     yena-by whom; avrtam-pervaded; nityam-eternally; idam- this; hi-certainly; sarvam-entire material manifestation; jnah-all-knowing; kala-karah-the creator and controller of time; guni-full of all auspicious transcendental attributes, or the master of the three modes of material nature; sarva-vit-knows everything; yah-who; tena-by Him; isitam-controlled; karma- fruitive actions and their results; vivartate-are set into motion; ha-certainly; prthvi-earth; ap-water; tejah-fire; anila-air; khani-and enter; cintyam-conceivable.

 

 

     The Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is present everywhere, who knows everything, who controls time, and who has all auspicious qualities, created earth, water, fire, air, and ether.

 

 

Text 3

 

 

tat karma krtva vinivartya bhuyas

     tattvasya tattvena sametya yogam

ekena dvabhyam tribhir astabhir va

     kalena caivatma-gunais ca suksmaih

 

     tat-that; karma-action; krtva-having performed; vinivartya-having set into motion; bhuyah-again; tattvasya-of one principle; tattvena-with another; sametya yogam-having brought ino contact; ekena-with ignorance; dvabhyam-with piety and sin; tribhih-with the three modes of material nature; astabhih-with the eight elements; va-or; kalena-with time; ca-also; eva-certainly; atma-gunaih-with the thoughts and desires of the conditioned souls; ca-also; suksmaih-subtle.

 

 

     Having created these He mixed one with another. He mixed one, two, three, and eight. He mixed them with time and with the subtle elements.

 

 

Text 4

 

 

arabhya karmani gunanvitani

     bhavams ca sarvan viniyojayed yah

tesam abhave krta-karma-nasah

     karma-ksaye yati sa tattvato 'nyah

 

     arabhya-performing; karmani-activities; guna-anvitani- pious; bhavan-thoughts; ca-also; sarvan-all; viniyojayet- engages in the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead; yah-one who; tesam-of them; abhave-when not performed for his personal benefit; kkrta-karma-nasah-free from the bondage of past fruitive actions; karma-ksaye-when karmic reactions are exhausted; yati-goes; sah-he; tattvatah-in truth; anyah-the individual spirit soul, different from matter.

 

 

     Serving the Supreme Personality of Godhead with every thought and deed, the soul destroys the reactions of past deeds. When the reactions of past deeds are detroyed, in truth he leaves this world.

 

 

Text 5

 

 

adih sa samyoga-nimitta-hetuh

     paras tri-kalad akalo 'pi drstah

tam visva-rupam bhava-bhutam idyam

     devam sva-citta-stham upasya purvam

 

     adih-the origin of creation; sah-He; samyoga-nimitta-hetuh-who brought together the ingredients of material creation; parah-above; tri-kalat-the three phases of time-past, present, and future; akalah-whose form is not material; api-although; drstah-seen by the devotees; tam-Him; visva-rupam-the Universal Form, or the Supersoul present as the witness in everyone's heart; bhava-bhutam-from whom the material cosmos has emenated; idyam-supremely worshippable; devam-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; sva-citta-stham-remaining in the spiritual  world; upasya-having worshipped; purvam-the foremost.

 

 

     The devotee worships the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the cause of all causes, who is above the three phases of time, whose form is not material, who is seen by His devotees, whose form is the entire universe, who created the universe, and who stays in His devotee's heart.

 

 

Text 6

 

 

sa vrksa-kalakrtibhih paro 'nyo

     yasmat prapancah parivartate 'yam

dharmavaham papa-nudam bhagesam

     jnatvatma-stham amrtam visva-dhama

 

     sah-He; vrksa-kala-akrtibhih-the tree of material time; parah-above; anyah-not material; yasmat-from whom; prapancah- the material cosmos; parivartate-is manifested and is in a state of flux; ayam-He; dharma-of religion; avaham-the protector; papa-of sins; nudam-the anihillation;{.fn 2} bhaga-of oppulences; isam-the master; j{.sy 241}atva-having understood; atma-stham-the Supersoul present in everyone's heart; amrtam-immortality; visva-dhama-within whom the universes rest.

 

 

     The Supreme Personality of Godhead is not touched by the material nature and He is free from the entaglement of the complex tree of material time. He is the origin of material creation, and it is due to Him only that everything changes. He is the protector of religion, and the annihilator of all sinful activities. He is the master of all opulences and everything rests within Him. He is the Supersoul present in everyone's heart. They who understand and worship Him become free from the cycle of birth and death in the material world and return to the eternal spiritual world.*

 

 

Text 7

 

 

tam isvaranam paramam mahesvaram

     tam devatanam paramam ca daivatam

patim patinam paramam parastad

     vidama devam bhuvanesam idyam

 

     tam-Him; isvaranam-of controllers; paramam-supreme; maha-heart; isvaram-controller; tam-Him; devatanam-of the demigods; paramam-the supreme; ca-also; daivatam-Lord; patim- master; patinam-of masters; paramam-supreme; parastat-than the highest; vidama-we meditate; devam-the Supreme Lord; bhuvana- of the world; isam-the master; idyam-worshippable by all.

 

 

     We meditate on the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is the controller of all other controllers, and He is the greatest of all the diverse planetary leaders. Everyone is under His control. All entities are delegated with particular power only by the Supreme Lord; they are not supreme themselves. He is also worshipable by all demigods and is the supreme director of all directors. Therfore, He is transcendental to all kinds of material leaders and controllers and is worshipable by all. There is no one greater than Him, and He is the supreme cause of all causes.*

 

 

Text 8

 

 

na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate

     na tat-samas cabhyadhikas ca drsyate

parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate

     sva-bhaviki jnana-bala-kriya ca

 

     na-not; tasya-of Him; karyam-a material body; karanm-or material senses; ca-also; vidyate-exist; na-not; tat-samah- equal to Him; ca-also; abhyadikah-superior; ca-also; drsyate- is seen; para-supreme; asya-of Him; saktih-potency; vividha- various; eva-certainly; sruyate-is heard in the Vedic literatures; svabhaviki-natural; jnana-knowledge; bala- strength; kriya-activities; ca-also.

 

 

     He does not possess bodily form like that of an ordinary living entity. There is no difference between His body and His soul. He is absolute. All his senses are transcendental. Any one of His senses can perform the action of any other sense. Therefore, no one is greater than Him or equal to Him. His potencies are multifarious, and thus His deeds are automatically performed as a natural sequence.*

 

 

Text 9

 

 

na tasya kascit patir asti loke

     na cesita naiva ca tasya lingam

sa karanam karanadhipadhipo

     na casya kascij janita na cadhipah

 

     na-not; tasya-of Him; kascit-anyone; patih-master; asti-is; loke-in this world; na-nor; ca-also; isita-controller; na-nor; eva-certainly; ca-and; tasya-of Him; lingam-a form imagined by the worshipper; sah-He; karanm-cause of all causes; karan-adhipa-of the demigods who control the senses; adhipah-the master; na-not; ca-also; asya-of Him; kascit- someone; janita-the father; na-nor; ca-also; adhipah-master.

 

 

     No one is His master. No one controls Him. He does not have a material body. He is the cause of all causes. He is the master of all masters of the senses. No one is His father. No one is His king.

 

 

Text 10

 

 

yas tantu-nabha iva tantubhih pradhana-jaih

     sva-bhavato deva ekah svam avrnot

sa no dadhatu brahmapyayam

 

     yah-who; tantu-nabhah-a spider; iva-just like; tantubhih-with a web; pradhana-jaih-the illusory potency maya; sva-bhavatah-naturally; devah-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; ekah-one without a second; svam-His own part and parcel (the individual living entity); avrnot-covers; sah-He; nah-to us; dadhatu-may grant; brahma-with the Supreme Personality of Godhead; apyayam-meeting.

 

 

     As a spider with its web, the Supreme Personality of Godhead with His potencies captures His devotees and grants them His association in the spiritual world.

 

 

Text 11

 

 

eko devah sarva-bhutesu gudhah

     sarva-vyapi sarva-bhutantaratma

karmadhyaksah sarva-bhutadhivasah

     saksi ceta kevalo nirgunas ca

 

     ekah-one without a second; sarva-bhutesu-in all living entities; gudhah-hidden; sarva-vyapi-all-pervading; sarva-bhuta-all living entities; antah-atma-the Supersoul; karma-of all activities; adhyaksah-the witness; sarva-bhuta-within all living entities; adhivasa-who resides; saksi-the witness; cetah-the living force; kevalah-transcendental; nirgunah- above the material qualities; ca-also.

 

 

     The Supreme Personality of Godhead manifests Himself as the all-pervading Supersoul, the witness present in the hearts of all living entities. He witnesses all activities of the living entity. He is the supreme living force, and yet He is transcendental to all material qualities.*

 

 

Text 12

 

 

eko vasi niskriyanam bahunam

     ekam bijam bahudha yah karoti

tam atmastham ye 'nupasyanti dhiras

     tesam sukham sasvatam netaresam

 

     ekah-one without a second; vasi-master; niskriyanam-of the liberated souls; bahunam-many; ekam-single; bijam-origin of creation; bahudha-in many ways; yah-who; karoti-expands; tam-Him; atma-stham-situated as the Supersoul in the hearts of all living entities; ye-those who; anupasyanti-see; dhirah- saintly devotees; tesam-of them; sukham-happiness; sasvatam- eternal; na-not; itaresam-of others.

 

 

     Wise men who in their hearts see the Supreme Personality fo Godhead, who controls all living entities, and who created great variety from the seed of material energy, attain eternal peace. Others cannot.

 

 

Text 13

 

 

nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam

     eko bahunam yo vidadhati kaman

tat-karanam sankhya-yogadhigamyam

     jnatva devam mucyate sarva-pasaih

 

     nityah-the single eternal; nityanam-among the many eternal; cetanah-the single conscious living entity; cetananam- among the many conscious living entities; ekah-the one; bahunam-of the many; yah-who; vidadhati-who grants; kaman-the desires and necessities; tat-karanm-tat-karanm-the ultimate cause of everything; sankhya-yoga-by the process of sankhya-yoga; adhigamyam-approachable; jnatva-having understood; devam-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; mucyate-becomes liberated; sarva-pasaih-from all bonds of material existance.

 

 

     They who know the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the supreme eternal among all eternals and the supreme conscious entity among all conscious entities, who fulfills everyone's desires and needs, who is the cause of all causes, and who is attained by sankhya-yoga, become free of all bonmdage.

 

 

Text 14

 

 

na tatra suryo bhati na candra-tarakam

     nema vidyuto bhanti kuto 'yam agnih

tam eva bhantam anu bhati sarvam

     tasya bhasa sarvam idam vibhati

 

     na-not; tatra-in the abode of the Lord; suryah-the sun; bhati-shines; na-nor; candra-the moon; tarakam-or stars; na- not; imah-these; vidyutah-electricity; bhanti-shines; kutah- what to speak of; ayam-this; agnih-fire; tam-that abode; eva- certainly; bhantam-shining; anu bhati-that abode; eva- certainly; bhantam-shining; anu bhati-reflects; sarvam- everything; tasya-of that; bhasa-effulgence; sarvam- everything; idam-this; vibhati-shines.

 

 

     In the sva-dhama (the abode) of the Lord there is no need of sun, moon or stars for illumination. Nor is there need of eletricity, so what to speak of ignited lamps? On the other hand, it is because those planets are self-illuminating that all effulgence has become possible, and whatever there is that is dazzling is due to the reflection of that sva-dhama.*

 

 

Text 15

 

 

eko hamso bhuvanasyasya madhye

     sa evagnih salile sannivistah

tam eva viditvati-mrtyum eti

     nanya-pantha vidyate 'yanaya

 

     ekah-one; hamsah-swan; bhuvanasya-of the material; asya- this; madhye-in the midst; sah-He; eva-certainly; agnih- blazing sun; salile-on the water; sannivistah-entered; tam- Him; eva-certainly; viditva-having understood; ati-mrtyum eti- one becomes free from death; na-not; anya-another; pantha- path;  vidyate-exists; ayanaya-for liberation.

 

 

     He is the only swan in the middle of the world. He is a fire burning on the water. They who know Him cross beyond death. There is no other path to liberation.

 

 

Text 16

 

 

sa visva-krd visva-vid atma-yonih

     jnah kalakaro guni sarva-vid yah

pradhana-ksetrajna-patir gunesah

     samsara-moksa-sthiti-bandha-hetuh

 

     sah-He; visva-of the material universe; krt-the creator; visva-of the material universe; vit-the knower; atma-yonih- without a cause; j{.sy 241}ah-omniscient; kala-akarah-the form of time; guni-with transcendental qualities; sarva-vit-omniscient; yah- who; pradhana-ksetraj{.sy 241}a-of the cosmic manifestation; patih-the master; guna-of all transcendental qualities; isah-the master; samsara-in the material world; moksa-of liberation; sthiti- situation; bandha-of bondage; hetuh-the cause.

 

 

     The Supreme Lord, the creator of this cosmic manifestation, knows every nook and corner of His creation. Although He is the cause of creation, there is no cause for His appearance. He is fully aware of everything. He is the Supersoul, the master of all transcendental qualities, and He is the master of this cosmic manifestation in regard to bondage to the conditional state of material existence and liberation from that bondage.*

 

 

Text 17

 

 

sa tan-mayo hy amrta isa-samstho

     jnah sarvago bhuvanasyasya gopta

ya ise 'sya jagato nityam eva

     nanyo hetur vidyata isanaya

 

     sah-He;  tat-mayah-spiritual ; hi-certainly; amrtah- immortal; isa-samsthah-the Supreme Controller; jnah-all-knowing; sarva-gah-all-pervading; bhuvanasya-of the material manifestation; asya-this; gopta-the protector; yah-who; ise- controls; asya-of this; jagatah-universe; nityam-eternally; eva-certainly; na-not; anyah-another; hetuh-cause; vidyate- exists; isanaya-in the matter of controlling.

 

 

     The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the spiritual, immortal, all-knowing, all-pervading, protector of the world. He eternally rules the world. No one else rules it.

 

Text 18

 

 

yo brahmanam vidadhati purvam

     yo vai vedams ca prahinoti tasmai

tam ha devam atma-buddhi-prakasam

     mumuksur vai saranam aham prapadye

 

     yah-who; brahmanam-Brahma; vidadhati-gave; purvam- formerly; yah-who; vai-certainly; vedan-the Vedas; ca-also; prahinoti-gave; tasmai-to him; tam-to Him; ha-certainly; devam-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; atma-buddhi-prakasam- the original source of all enlightenment; mumuksuh-desiring liberation; vai-certainly; saranam-prapadye-let me surrender.

 

 

     Because I desire liberation, let me surrender unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who first enlightened Lord Brahma in Vedic knowledge through Lord Brahma's heart. The Lord is the original source of all enlightenment and spiritual  advancement.*

 

 

Text 19

 

 

niskalam niskriyam santam

     niravadyam niranjanam

amrtasya param setum

     dagdhendhanam ivanalam

 

     niskalam-perfect and complete; niskriyam-without any material activities; santam-unchanging; niravadyam-completely pure and free from fault; niranjanam-untouched by the material nature; amrtasya-of immortality; param-the supreme; setum- bridge (to cross beyond the material nature); dagdha-burning; indhanam-fuel; iva-just like; analam-fire.

 

 

     Let me surrender to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is perfect, complete, free from material activities, peaceful, pure, and free from the touch of matter. who is a bridge to immortality, and who is a blazing fire greedily consuming fuel.

 

 

Text 20

 

 

yada carmavad akasam

     vestayisyanti manavah

tada devam avijnaya

     duhkhasyanto bhavisyati

 

     yada-when; carmavat-with a tent; akasam-outer space; vestayisyanti-cover; manavah-human beings; tada-then; devam- the Supreme Personality of Godhead; avijnaya-without understanding; duhkhasya-of material miseries; antah-the termination; bhavisyati-will be.

 

 

     Only when they can cover all outer space with a tent the living entities will become free of suffering without knowing the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

 

 

Text 21

 

 

tapah-prabhavad deva-prasadac ca

     brahma ha svetasvataro 'tha vidvan

atyasramibhyah paramam pavitram

     provaca samyag rsi-sangha-justam

 

     tapah-of austerities; prabhavat-by the strength of; deva- of the Supreme Personality of Godhead; prasadat-by the mercy of; ca-also; brahma-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; ha- certainly; svetasvatarah-Svetasvatara Muni; atha-thus; vidvan- understood; atyasramibhyah-to the saintly paramahamsas; paramam-the Supreme; pavitram-supremely pure; provaca-described; samyak-properly; rsi-sanga-by the great devotees and sages; justam-worshipped.

 

 

     By the power of his austerities, and by the Lord's mercy, learned Svetasvatara Muni thus described the pure Supreme Personality of Godhead to the best of the saintly sages.

 

 

Text 22

 

 

vedante paramam guhyam

     pura-kalpe pracoditam

naprasantaya datavyam

     naputrayasisyaya va punah

 

     vedante-in the Vedic literatures; paramam-supreme; guhyam-secret; pura kalpe-in former times; pracoditam-spoken; na- not; aprasantaya-to one who is not peaceful; datavyam-should be given; na-nor; aputraya-to one who is sonless; asisyaya-to one who does not have disciples; va-or; punah-again.

 

    

     This ancient Svetasvatara Upanisad, which is the supreme secret of Vedic literature, should not be spoken to one who is not peaceful or in control of his senses, nor to one who is not a dutiful son or an obedient disciple.

 

 

Text 23

 

 

yasya deve para bhaktir

     yatha deva tatha gurau

tasyaite kathita hy arthah

     prakasante mahatmanah

 

     yasya-of whom; deve-for the Supreme Lord; para-implicit; bhaktih-faith; yatha-just as; deve-for the Lord; tatha-in the same way; gurau-for the guru; tasya-of him; ete-they; kathitah-described; hi-certainly; arthah-meanings;{.fn 2} prakasante-become manifest; maha-atmanah-of the great soul.

 

 

     Only unto those great souls who have implicit faith in both the Lord and the spiritual master are all the imports of Vedic knowledge automatically revealed.*
