Chapter 4

 

 

Text 1

 

                                       

ya eko 'varno bahudha sakti-yogad

     varnan anekan nihitartho dadhati

vi caiti cante visvam adau sa devah

     sa no buddhya subhaya samyunaktu

 

     yah-who; ekah-one without a second; avarnah-without any material form or material qualities; bahudha-in many ways; sekti-yogat-by His potencies; varnan-living entities; anekan- many; nihita-arthah-having made the decision; dadhati-placed; vi ca eti-caused to merge; ca-and; ante-at the end; visvam-the universe; adau-in the beginning; sah-He; devah-the Supreme Lord; sah-He; nah-us; buddhya-with intelligence; subhaya-auspicious; samyunaktu-may equip.

 

 

     May the one Supreme Personality of Godhead, who has no material qualities, who by His potencies created the varieties of the material world in the beginning, and who dissolves the material world in the end, grant us good intelligence. 

 

 

Text 2

 

 

tad evagnis tad adityas

     tad vayus tad u candramah

tad eva sukram tad brahma

     tad apas tat prajapatih

 

     tat-that; eva-certainly; agnih-fire; tat-that; adityah- the sun; tat-that; vayuh-the wind; tat-that; u-certainly; candramah-the moon; tat-that; eva-certainly; sukram-the stars; tat-that; brahma-the demigod Brahma; tat-that; apah- the water of the Garbhodaka ocean; tat-that; prajapatih-the Universal Form.

 

 

     He is fire. He is the sun. He is air. He is the moon. He is the stars. He is Brahma. He is Prajapati. He is water.

 

 

Text 3

 

 

tvam stri tvam puman asi tvam

     kumara uta va kumari

tvam jirno dandena vancasi tvam

     jato bhavasi visvato-mukhah

 

     tvam-You; stri-woman; tvam-You; puman-man; asi-are;    tvam-You; kumarah-boy; uta-certainly; va-or; kumari-girl; tvam-You; jirnah-an old-man; dandena-with a cane; vancasi- walk; tvam-You; jatah-birth; bhavasi-You take; visvatah-mukhah-all-prevading.

 

 

     You are woman. You are man. You are boy. You are girl. As an old man You walk with a cane. You are born again, O all-pervading Lord.

 

 

Text 4

 

 

nilah patango harito lohitaksas

     tadid-garbha rtavah samudrah

anadimat tvam vibhutvena vartase

     yato jatani bhuvanani visva

 

     nilah-black; patangah-bee; haritah-green parrot; lohita-aksah-the Kokila bird, whose eyes are red; tadit-garbhah-rain-cloud with lightning; rtavah-the seasons; samudrah-and oceans; anadimat-without beginning; tvam-You; vibhutvena-with potency; vartase-You manifest; yatah-from whom; jatani-taken birth; bhuvanani-the entire world; visva-the moving and non-moving living entities.

 

 

     You are the black bee, the green parrot, the red-eyed cuckoo, the storm-cloud with lightning, the seasons, and the oceans. You are everywhere. You are beginningless. The worlds are born from You.

 

 

Text 5

 

 

ajam ekam lohita-sukla-krishnam

     bahvih prajah srjamanam sarupah

ajo hy eko jusamano 'nusete

     jahaty enam bhukta-bhogam ajo 'nyah

 

     ajam-unborn; ekam-one; lohita-red; sukla-white; krishnam- black; bahvih-many; prajah-many; prajah-living entities; srjamanam-creating; sa-rupah-with their forms; ajah-unborn; hi-certainly; ekah-one; jusamanah-serving; anusete-follows; jahati-rejects; eham-this; bhukta-bhogam-materialistic sense-gratification; ajah-unborn; anyah-another.

 

 

     An unborn man enjoys an unborn red, white, and black woman who bears many children like herself. Another unborn man first enjoys and then forsakes her.

 

 

     Note: The unborn woman is the material nature. The colors red, white, and black are the modes of passion, goodness, and ignorance. The many children are the ingredients of the material universes. The first unborn man is the conditioned soul. The second unborn man is the soul who, after trying to enjoy matter, finally renounces the world and attains liberation.

 

 

Text 6

 

 

dva suparna sayuja sakhaya

     samanam vrksam parisasvajate

tayor anyah pippalam svadv atty

     anasnann anyo 'bhicakasiti

 

     dva-two; supana-birds; sayuja-meeting; sakhaya-friends; samanam-the same; vrksam-tree; parisasyajate-taking shelter of; tayoh-of them; anyah-other; pippalam-pippale fruit; svadu-sweet; atti-eats; anasnan-not eating; anyah-the other; abhicakasiti-manifested.

 

 

     The individual spirit-soul and the Supersoul, Personality of Godhead, are like two friendly birds sitting on the same tree. One of the birds (the individual atomic soul) is eating the fruit of the tree (the sense-gratification afforded to the material body), and the other bird (the Supersoul) is not trying to eat these fruits, but is simply watching His friend.*

 

 

Text 7

 

 

samane vrkse puruso nimagno

     'nisaya socati muhyamanah

justam yada pasyati anyam isam

     asya mahimanam iti vita-sokah

 

     samane-on the same; vrkse-tree; purusah-the conditioned living entity; nimagnah-drowned; anisaya-by the illusory potency; soacti-laments; muhyamanah-bewildered; justam- blissful; yada-when; pasyati-sees; anyam-the other; isam-the Supreme Lord; asya-of Him; mahimanam-the glories; iti-thus; vita-free; sokah-from lamentation.

 

 

     Although the two birds are on the same tree, the eating bird is fully engrossed with anxiety and moroseness as the enjoyer of the fruits of the tree. But if in some way or other he turns his face to his friend who is the Lord and knows His glories, at once the suffering bird becomes free from all anxieties.*

 

 

Text 8

 

 

rco aksare parame vyoman

     yasmin deva adhi visve niseduh

yas tam na veda kim rca karisyati

     ya iti tad vidus ta ime samasate

 

     rcah-the Vedic hymns; aksare-imperishable; parame vyoman- in the spiritual sky; yasmin-in whom; devah adhi visve-all the demigods; niseduh-have taken shelter; yah-one who; tam-Him; na-does not; veda-understand; kim-what; rca-with the Vedic hymns; karisyati-will he do; ye-those who; iti-thus; tat-the truth of the Supreme Personality of Godhead; viduh-understand; te ime-they; samasate-attain the success of spiritual life.

 

 

     In the eternal spiritual sky the demigods and the Vedic hymns serve the Supreme Personality of Godhead. What will he who does not know Him do with the Vedic hymns? They who know Him have attained the goal of life.

 

 

Text 9

 

 

chandamsi yajnah kratavo vratani

     bhutam bhavyam yac ca veda vadanti

asman mayi srjate visvam etat

     tasmims canyo mayaya sannirudhah

 

     chandamsi-the hymns of the Vedas; yajnah kratavah-the Vedic rituals and sacrifices; vratani-vows; bhutam-past; bhavyam-future; yat-which; ca-also; vedah-the Vedas; vadanti-describe; asmat-from His potency; mayi-the Supreme Lord, the controller of innumerable potencies; srjate-creates; visvam- material universe; etat-this; tasmin-in that; ca-also; anyah- another person; mayaya-by the illusory potency; sannirudhah- trapped.

 

 

     The Vedas describe a bewildering variety of hymns, prayers, sacrifices, rituals, vows, austerities, history, and predicitions of the future. Simply by studying the Vedas, it is very difficult for the conditioned soul, illusioned by maya and trapped in the material world, to understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the controller of the illusory potency and the creator of the material universes.*

 

 

Text 10

 

 

mayam tu prakrtim vidyan

     mayinam tu mahesvaram

tasyavayava-bhutais tu

     vyaptam sarvam idam jagat

 

     mayam-illusion; tu-but; prakrtim-the material energy; vidyat-one should know; mayinam-the magician; tu-but; maha-isvaram-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; tasya-of Him; avaya-bhutaih-by the parts and parcels; tu-but; vyaptam- pervaded; sarvam-everything; idam-this; jagat-material universe.

 

 

     One should know that although maya (illusion) is false or temporary, the background of maya is the supreme magician, the Personality of Godhead, who is Mahesvara, the Supreme Controller,* and whose limbs are everywhere in the material universe.

 

 

Text 11

 

 

yo yonim yonim adhitisthaty eko

     yasminn idam sam ca vi caiti sarvam

tam isanam varadam devam idyam

     nicayyemam santim atyantam eti

 

     yah-who; yonim yonim-the material manifestation; adhissthati-creates; ekah-alone; yasmin-in whom; idam-this; sam ca vi ca eti-merges; sarvam-everything; tam-Him; isanam- the Supreme Controller; vara-dam-the bestower of benedicitions; devam-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; idyam-worshippable; nicayya-understanding; imam-this; santim-peace; antyantam- great; eti-one attains.

 

 

     One who knows the generous and glorious Supreme Personality of Godhead, who alone created the material world and in whom it enters at the end, attains perfect peace.

 

 

Text 12

 

 

yo devanam probhavas codbhavas ca

     visvadhipo rudro maharsih

hiranyagarbham pasyati jayamanam

     sa no buddhya subhaya samyunaktu

 

     yah-who; devanam-of the demigods; prabhavah-creator; ca- and; udbhavah-source of power and opulence; ca-and; visva-of the universe; adhipah-ruler and protector; rudrah-destroyer; maha-rsih-omniscient; hiranyagarbham-Brahma; pasyati-sees; jayamanam-taking birth; sah-He; nah-us; buddhya-with intelligence; subhaya-auspicious; samyunaktu-may equip.

 

 

     May the omniscient Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the demigods' father and the material universes' creator, maintainer and destroyer, and who with a glance fathered the demigod Brahma, give good intelligence to us.

 

 

Text 13

 

 

yo devanam adhipo

     yasmil loka adhishritah

ya ise asya dvipadas catuspadas

     tasmai devaye havisa vidhema

 

     yah-who; devanam-of the demigods; adhipah-master; yasmin-in whom; lokah-all planets; adhishritah-are situated; yah-who; ise-controller; asya-of whom; dvipadah-human beings; catuspadah-and fourlegged animals; tasmai-to Him; devaya- Supreme Personality of Godhead; havisa vidhema-we worship.

 

 

     With offerings of clarified butter let us worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the master of the demigods, in whom the worlds rest, and who rules the two-footed and the four-footed.

 

 

Text 14

 

 

suksmati-suksmam kalilasya madhye

     visvasya srastaram aneka-rupam

visvasyaikam parivestitaram

     jnatva sivam santim atyantam eti

 

     suksma-ati-suksmam-the most subtle; kalilasya-of the cosmic manifestation; madhye-in the middle; visvasya-of the universe; srastaram-the creator; aneka-in many; rupam-forms; visvasya-of the universe; ekam-one without a second; parivestitaram-all-prevading; jnatva-having understood; sivam- auspicious; santim-peace; atyantam-great; eti-attains.

 

 

     One who knows the auspicious Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is more subtle than the subtlest, who is the creater of the material universe, who has many forms, and who is present everywhere, attains perfect peace.

 

 

Text 15

 

 

sa eva kale bhuvanasya gopta

     visvadhipah sarva-bhutesu gudhah

yasmin yukta brahmarsayo devatas ca

     tam eva jnatva mrtyu-pasams chinatti

 

     sah-He; eva-certainly; kale-during the period of cosmic manifestation; bhuvanasya-of the universe; gopta-the protector; visva-of the universe; adhipah-the ruler; sarva-bhutesu-in the hearts of all living beings; gudhah-hidden; yasmin-in whom; yuktah-taken shelter; brahma-rsayah-the saintly sages; devatah-demigods; ca-and; tam-Him; eva-certainly; jnatva-having known; mrtyu-of death; pasan-the ropes; chinatti-cuts.

 

 

     One who knows the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who protects the worlds, who hides in all living entities, and in whom the demigods and sages take shelter, cuts the ropes of death.

 

 

Text 16

 

 

ghrtat param mandam ivati-suksmam

     jnatva sivam sarva-bhutesu gudham

visvasyaikam parivestitaram

     jnatva devam mucyate sarva-pasaih

 

     ghrtat-from butter; param-superior; mandam-essence; iva- just like; ati-suksmam-very subtle; jnatva-having understood; sivam-auspicious; sarva-bhutesu-in the hearts of all living entities and within all material elements; gudham-hidden; visvasya-of the material universe; ekam-one without a second; parivestitaram-all-prevading; jnatva-having understood; devam- the Supreme Personality of Godhead; mucyate-one becomes free; sarva-pasaih-from the bondage of material existance.

 

 

     One who knows the auspicious, all-pervading Supreme Personality of Godhead, who hides in everyone's heart as butter hides in milk, becomes free of all bondage.

 

 

Text 17

 

 

esa devo visva-karma mahatma

     sada jananam hrdaye sannivistah

hrda manisa manasabhiklpto

     ya etad vidur amrtas te bhavanti

 

     esah-He; devah-the Lord; visva-of the universe; karma- creator; maha-atma-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; sada- always; jananam-of the living entities; hrdaye-in the heart; sannivistah-present; hrda-with the heart; manisa-by the wise devotees; manasa-by the intelligence; abhiklptah-meditated upon; ye-those who; etat-this; viduh-understand; amrtah-free from the cycle of birth and death; te-they; bhavanti-become.

 

 

     They become immortal who know the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the universes' creator, who always stays in everyone's heart and is the object of the wise heart's meditation.

 

 

Text 18

 

 

yada tamas tan na diva na ratrir

     na san na casan chiva eva kevalah

tad aksaram tat savitur varenyam

     prajna ca tasmat prasrta purani

 

     yada-at the time of anihillation; tamah-darkness; tat- that; na-not; diva-day; na-nor; ratrih-night; na-not; sat- the gross material energy; na-not; ca-also; asat-the subtle forms of material energy; sivah-the auspicious Personality of Godhead; kevalah-alone; tat-that; aksaram-imperishable; tat- that; savituh varenyam-more brilliant than the sun; prajna- spiritual intelligence, manifested as the Vedas;  ca-also; tasmat-from Him; prasrta-manifested; purani-ancient.

 

 

     When the darkness of universal destruction comes there is no day. There is no night. There is no cause. There is no effect. Then only the auspicious, eternal, splendid, omniscient, ancient Supreme Personality of Godhead exists.

 

 

Text 19

 

 

nainam urdhvam na tiryancam

     na madhye parijagrabhat

na tasya pratima asti

     yasya nama mahad yasah

 

     na-not; enam-this; urdhvam-upward limit; na-not; tiryancam-horizontal limit; na-not; madhye-in the middle; parijagrabhat-manifested; na-not; tasya-of Him; pratima- equal; asti-there is; yasya-of whom; nama-Holy name; mahat- great; yasah-glory.

 

 

     For Him there is no up, so across, and no middle. For Him there are no limits. His name is His great glory.

 

 

Text 20

 

 

na sandrse tisthati rupam asya

     na caksusa pasyati kascanainam

hrda hrdi-stham manasa ya enam

     evam vidur amrtas te bhavanti

 

     na-not; sandrse-in the perception of the senses; tsithati-is situated; rupam-the form; asya-of the Supreme Lord; na- not; caksusa-with material eyes; pasyati-sees; kascana-anyone; enam-Him; hrda-by devotional service; hrdi-stham-situated within the core of the heart; manasa-by understanding the philosophy of devotion; ye-they who; enam-Him; evam-in this way; viduh-understand; amrtah-free from the cycle of birth and death; te-they; bhavanti-become.

 

 

     They become immortal who know the Supreme Personality of Godhead, whose form is not within the perception of material senses, whose is not seen by the material eye, whose form in the heart is seen only by the heart of love.

 

 

Text 21

 

 

ajata ity evam

     kascid bhiruh prapadyate

rudra yat te daksinam

     mukham tena mam pahi nityam

 

     ajatah-free from birth and death; iti-thus; evam-in this way; kascit-someone; bhiruh-frightened; prapadyate-takes shelter; rudra-O destroyer of the illusions and sufferings of the devotees; yat-which; te-Your; daksinam mukham-merciful aspect; tena-by that; mam-me; pahi-please protect; nityam- always.

 

 

     O Lord, because You are beyond the world of birth and death this frightened soul surrenders unto You. Please show me Your merciful face. Please save me.

 

 

Text 22

 

 

ma nas toke tanaye ma na ayusi

     ma no gosu ma na asvesu ririsah

viran ma no rudra bhamito 'vadhir

     havismantah sadamit tva havamahe

 

     ma-may there not be; nah-our; toke-children; tanaye- grandchildren and dynasty; ma-may there not be; nah-our; ayusi-in the life; ma-let there not be; nah-our; gosu-among the cows; ma-may there not be; nah-our; asvesu-among the horses; ririsah-calamities; viran-heroic friends and servants; ma-may there not be; rudra-O destroyer of ignorance and suffering; bhamitah-passionate; avahih-harm; havismantah-offering oblations into the sacrificial fire; sadamit-continually; tva- to You; havamahe-we sacrifice.

 

 

     In this life let there be no calamities for our children. grandchildren, cows, and horses. Let there be no harm to our heroic protectors. We always worship You with sacrifices of clarified butter.
