Chapter 3

 

 

Text 1

 

 

ya eko jalavan isata isanibhih

     sarval lokan isata isanibhih

ya evaika udbhave sambhave ca

     ya etad vidur amrtas te bhavanti

 

     yah-who; ekah-one; jalavan-the master of all potencies; isate-rules; isanibhih-with His potencies; sarvan-all; lokan- planets; isate-rules; isanibhih-with His potencies; yahhwho; eva-certainly; ekah-one; udbhave-in creation; sambhave- maintenance; ca-and; ye-who; etat-in this way; viduh- understand Him. amrtah-immortal; te-they; bhavanti-become.

 

 

     They who understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of the network of maya, who alone, with His potencies, rules all the worlds, and who alone, with His potencies, rules the all the worlds in their creation and maintenance, becomes immortal.

 

 

Text 2

 

 

eko hi rudro na dvitiyaya tasthur

     ya imal lokan isata isanibhih

pratyan janams tisthati sancukopanta-kale

     samsrjya visva bhuvanani gopah

    

     ekah-one; hi-certainly; rudrah-the cause of destruction; na-not; dvitiyaya-for a second; tasthuh-the learned sages accept; yah-who; iman-these; lokan-planetary systems; isate- rules; isanibhih-with His potencies; pratyak-within; janan-the living entities; tisthati-remains; sa{.sy 241}cukopa-destroys; anta-kale-at the time of universal anihillation; samsrjay-having created; visvah-everything; bhuvanani-the planetary systems; gopah-protects.

 

 

     The Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is one without a second, with His potencies rules the worlds. He stays within the living entities. He protects the worlds. He created the worlds and at the last moment He withdraws them.

 

 

Text 3

 

 

visvatas-caksur uta visvato-mukho

     visvato-bahur uta visvatas-pat

sam bahubhyam dhamati sam patatrair

     dyav abhumi janayan deva ekah

 

     visvatah-everywhere; caksuh-with eyes; uta-certainly; visvatah-everywhere; mukhah-faces; visvatah-everywhere; bahuh-arms; uta-certainly visvatah-everywhere; pat-feet; sam- together; bahubhyam-with two arems; dhamati-equipping; sam- together; bahubhyam-with wings; dyau-in the dky; abhumi-to the earth; janayan-causes to take birth; devah-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; ekah-sole.

 

 

     His eyes are everywhere. His faces are everywhere. His arms are everywhere. His feet are everywhere. He, the one Supreme Personality of Godhead, breathed life into they who have two arms on the land and they who have wings in the sky.

 

 

Text 4

 

 

yo devanam prabhavas cod bhavas ca

     visvadhipo rudro maharsih

 hranyagarbham janayam asa purvam

     sa no buddhya subhaya samyunaktu

    

     yah-who; devanam-of the demigods; prabhavah-origin; ca- also; udbhavah-potency; ca-also; visva-of the universe; adhipah-monarch; rudrah-who appears as Rudra; maha-rsih-full of transcendental knowledge; hiranyagarbham-Brahma; janayam asa-created; purvam-at the beginning of creation; sah-He; nah-us; buddhya-with intelligence; subhaya-auspicious; samyunaktu-may endow.

 

 

     May the omniscient Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the creator and protector of the demigods, and who in the beginning fathered the demigod Brahma, give us good intelligence.

 

 

Text 5

 

 

ya te rudra siva tanur

     aghorapapa-kasini

taya nas tanuva santamaya

     giri-santabhicakasihi

 

     ya-which; te-Your; rudra-O Lord who removes the sufferings of material existance; siva-auspicious; tanuh-form; aghora-delivering from fear; apapa-kasini-pure; taya-by that; nah-to us; tanuva-form; santamaya-most peaceful; giri-santa-O Lord who grants aupsiciousness to the living entities; abhicakasihi-please become manifest.

 

 

     O Supreme Personality of Godhead, please show us Your auspicious, handsome, sinless, peaceful form.

 

 

Text 6

 

 

yam isum girisanta

     haste bibharsy astave

sivam giritra tam kuru

     ma himsih purusam jagat

 

     yam-which; isum-arrow (the illusory potency  maya); girisanta-O Lord who benedicts the living entities by revealing to them the Vedic literatures; haste-in Your hand; bibharsi-You carry; astave-for the living entities; sivam-auspicious; giritra-O Lord who protects the living entities by teaching them the knowledge of the Vedas; tam-that arrow; kuru-please make; ma-don't; himsih-harm; purusam-this living entity; jagat-in the material world.

 

 

     O good Supreme Personality of Godhead, please make auspicious the arrow You hold in Your hand for the living entities. Please don't harm the people of the world.

 

 

Text 7

 

 

tatah param brahma-param brhantam

     yathanikayam sarva-bhutesu gudham

visvasyaikam parivestitaram

     isam tam jnatvamrta bhavanti

 

     tatah-than that; param-superior; brahma-than Brahma or the Brahman effulgence; param-superior; brhantam-the greatest; yatha-according to; nikayam-the body; sarva-bhutesu-in all living entities; gudham-hidden (as the Supersoul); visvasya-of the material universe; ekam-sole; parivestitaram-all-pervading; isam-the Supreme Controller; tam-Him; jnatva-having understood; amrtah-immortal; bhavanti-they become.

 

 

     They who know the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is greater than the greatest, who is hidden in all living entities, and who is preent everywhere in the material world, become immortal.

 

 

Text 8

 

 

vedaham etam purusam mahantam

     aditya-varnam tamasah purastat

tam eva viditvatimrtyum eti

     nanyah pantha vidyate 'yanaya

 

     veda-I understand; etam-Him; purusam-the Person; mahantam-Supreme; aditya-as the sun; varnam-brilliant; tamasah-the darkness; purastat-above; tam-Him; eva-certainly; viditva-having understood; atimrtyum-immortality; eti-attains; na-not; anyah-another; pantha-path; vidyate-exists; ayanaya- for becoming liberated from the material entanglement.

 

 

     I know that Supreme Personality of Godhead who is transcendental to all material conceptions of darkness. Only he who knows Him can transcend the bonds of birth and death. There is no way for liberation other than this knowledge of that Supreme Person.*

 

 

Text 9

 

 

yasmat param naparam asti kincid

     yasman naniyo na jyayo 'sti kincit

vrksa iva stabdho divi tisthaty ekas

     tenedam purnam purusena sarvam

 

     yasmat-than whom; param-superior; na-not; aparam- another; asti-there is; kincit-anything; yasmat-than whom; na-not; aniyah-smaller; na-nor; jyayah-larger; asti-there is; kincit-anything; vrksah-a tree; iva-like; stabdhah-situated; divi-in the sky; tisthati-stands; ekah-alone; tene-by Him; idam-this; purnam-pervaded; purusene-by the Supreme Personality of Godhead; sarvam-entire universe.

 

 

     There is no truth superior to that Supreme Person because He is the supermost. He is smaller than the smallest, and He is greater than the greatest. He is situated as a silent tree, and He illumines the transcendental sky, and as a tree spreads its roots, He spreads His extensive energies.*

 

 

Text 10

 

 

tato yad uttarataram

     tad arupam anamayam

ya etad vidur amrtas te bhavanty

     athetare duhkham evapi yanti

 

     tatah-from everything else; uttarataram-greater; tat-Him; arupam-without a material form; anamayam-without any defects; ye-those who; etat-Him; viduh-understand; emrtah-immortal; te-they; bhavanti-become; atha-then; itare-others; duhkham- suffering; eva-certainly; api-even; yanti-attain.

 

 

     They who know that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is greater than the greatest, and has no material body and no faults, become immortal. They who do not know Him suffer.

 

 

Text 11

 

 

sarvanana-siro-grivah

     sarva-bhuta-guhasayah

sarva-vyapi sa bhagavams

     tasmat sarva-gatah sivah

 

     sarva-everywhere; anana-mouths; sirah-heads; grivah-and necks; sarva-bhuta-of all living entities; guha-in the hearts; sayah-residing; sarva-everywhere; vyapi-pervading; sah-He; bhagavan-the supremely opulent Personality of Godhead; tasmat- therefore; sarva-gatah-all-pervading; siva-auspicious.

 

 

     His faces, heads, and necks are everywhere. He hides in all beings. He is everywhere. The auspicious Personality of Godhead is everywhere.

 

 

Text 12

 

 

mahan prabhur vai purusah

     sattvasyaisa pravartakah

sunirmalam imam praptim

     isano jyotir avyayah

 

     mahan-supreme; prabhuh-master; vai-certainly; purusah- the Personality of Godhead; sattvasya-of the mode of goodness, or of intelligence; esah-He; pravartakah-the controller; su-nirmalam-very pure; imam-this; praptim-attainment; isanah-the controller; jyotih-effulgent; avyayah-imperishable.

 

 

     The Personality of Godhead is the source of the Brahman effulgence, and He is imperishable. He is the Supreme Controller. He controls the mode of goodness, and He awards various kinds of intelligence to the living entities. He is the controller of spiritual purity and of liberation.*

 

 

Text 13

 

 

angustha-matrah puruso 'ntaratma

     sada jananam hrdaye sannivistah

hrda manv-iso manasabhiklpto

     ya etad vidur amrtas te bhavanti

 

     angustha-of a thumb; matrah-the measurement; purusah-the Supreme Person; antah-atma-the Supersoul; sada-always; jananam-of the living entities; hrdaye-in the heart; sannivistah- entered; hrda-by the pure heart; manu-if knowledge; isah-the controller; manasa-by the pure mind; abhiklptah-seen in meditation; ye-those who; etat-this; viduh-know; amrtah- immortal; te-they; bhavanti-become.

 

 

     They become immortal who know the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who in a form the size of a thumb always stays in the living entities' hearts, who is the master of all knowledge, and who is meditated on in the heart.

 

 

Text 14

 

 

sahasra-sirsa purusah

     sahasraksah sahasra-pat

sa bhumim visvato vrtva-

     tyatisthad dasangulam

 

     sahasra-with uncountable thousands; sirsa-of heads; purusah-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; sahasra-with thousands; aksah-of eyes; sahasra-and thousands; pat-of feet; sah-He; bhumin visvatah-the entire universe; vrtva-pervading; atyatisthat-stepped outside; dasa-angulam-the measurement of ten fingers.

 

 

     That Supreme Personality of Godhead is all-pervading within the material world. His uncountable thousands of heads, eyes, and feet are situated everywhere. His form is so large that not only does it cover the entire universe, but it has surpassed the boundries of the material creation by the measurement of ten fingers.*

 

 

Text 15

 

 

purusa evedam sarvam

     yad bhutam yac ca bhavyam

utamrtatvasyesano

     yad annenatirohati

 

     purusah-the Supreme Person; eva-certainly; idam-this; sarvam-everything; yat-what; bhutam-has been; yat-what; ca- also; bhavyam-will be; uta-certainly; amrtatvasya-of immortality; isanah-the controller; yat-which; annena-the karmic reactions of the conditioned souls; atirohati-crosses beyond.

 

 

     That Supreme Personality of Godhead is everything, all that has been, and all that ever will be, for everything is simply the manifestation of His energy. When He wishes He frees the conditioned living entities from the bondage of past karmic reactions, and grants them liberation and eternal residence in the spiritual world.*

 

 

Text 16

 

 

sarvatah pani-padam tat

     sarvato 'ksi-siro-mukham

sarvatah srutimal loke

     sarvam avrtya tisthati

 

     sarvatah-everywhere; pani-hands; padam-legs; tat- that; sarvatah-everywhere; aksi-eyes; sirah-head; mukham-face; sarvatah-everywhere; srutimat-hearing; loke-in the world; sarvam-everywhere; avrtya-covering; tisthati- exists.

 

 

     Everywhere are His hands and legs, His eyes and faces, and He hears everything. In this way the Supersoul exists.*

 

 

Text 17

 

 

sarvendriya-gunabhasam

     sarvendriya-vivarjitam

asaktam sarva-bhrc caiva

     nirgunam guna-bhoktr ca

 

     sarve-all; indriya-senses; guna-qualities; abhasam- original source; sarva-all; indriya-senses; vivarjitam-being without; asaktam-without attachment; sarva-bhrt-maintainer of everyone; ca-also; eva-certainly; nirgunam-without material qualities; guna-bhoktr-simultaneously master of the gunas; ca-also.

 

 

     The Supersoul is the original source of all senses, yet He is without senses. He is unattached, although He is the maintainer of all living beings. He transcends the modes of nature, and at the same time He is the master of all modes of material nature.*

 

 

Text 18

 

 

nava-dvare pure dehi

     hamso lelayate bahih

vasi sarvasya lokasya

     sthavarasya carasya ca

 

     nava-nine; dvare-gates; pure-in the city; dehi-the  resident of the material body; hamsah-the Supersoul; lelayate- manifested; bahih-outside; vasi-the Supreme Controller; sarvasya-of all; lokasya-living entities; sthavarasya-the non-moving; carasya-and the moving; ca-also.

 

 

     The Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is living within the body of a living entity, is the controller of all living entities all over the universe. The body consists of nine gates: two eyes, two nostrils, two ears, one mouth, the anus and the genital. The living entity in his conditioned stage identifies himself with the body, but when he identifies himself with the Lord within himself, he becomes just as free as the Lord, even while in the body.*

 

 

Text 19

 

 

apani-pado javano grahita

     pasyaty  acaksuh sa srnoty akarnah

sa vetti vedyam na ca tasyasti vetta

     tam ahur agryam purusam mahantam

 

     apani-without hands; padah-or feet; javanah-the fastest; grahita-accepting; pasyati-sees; acaksuh-without eyes; sah- He; srnoti-hears; akarnah-without ears; sah-He; vetti-knows; vedyam-the object of knowledge; na-not; ca-and; tasya-of Him; asti-there is; vetta-the knower; tam-Him; ahuh-they describe; agryam-original; purusam-person; mahantam-great.

 

 

     Learned transcendentalists explain that God is the greatest, the original person. He has no material hands, but He can take anything. He has no material legs, but He can travel faster than anyone. He has no material eyes, but He sees everything. He has no material ears, but He hears everything. He knows everything, but not one knows Him.*

 

 

Text 20

 

 

anor aniyan mahato mahiyan

     natma guhayam nihito 'sya jantoh

tam akratum pasyati vita-soko

     dhatuh prasadan mahimanam isam

 

     anoh-than the smallest; aniyan-the smallest; mahatah-than the great; mahiyan-greater; na-not; atma-the Supersoul; guhayam-in the heart; nihitah-remaining; asya-of him; jantoh- the living entity; tam-Him; akratum-free from material desires; pasyati-sees; vita-free; sokah-from lamentation; dhatuh-of the creator; prasadat-by the mercy; mahimanam-the glories;  isam-the Supreme Lord.

 

 

     Both the Supersoul (Paramatma) and the atomic soul (jivatma) are situated on the same tree of the body within the same heart of the living being, and only one who has become free from all material desires as well as lamentations can, by the grace of the Supreme, understand the glories of the soul.*

 

 

Text 21

 

 

vedaham etam ajaram puranam

     sarvatmanam sarva-gatam vibhutvat

janma-nirodham pravadanti yasya

     brahma-vadino hi pravadanti nityam

 

     vedam aham-I understand; etam-Him; ajaram-free from old-age; puranam-allthough the oldest; sarva-atmanam-the Supersoul residing in the hearts of all living entities; sarva-gatam-all-pervading; vibhutvat-by His potencies; janma-birth; nirodham- and death; pravadanti-the foolish describe; yasya-of whom; brahma-vadinah-the learned transcendentalists; hi-certainly; pravadanti-say; nityam-that He is eternal.

 

 

     I know the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the oldest, who never grows old, who is in everyone's heart, who is everywhere, and who the transcendentalists say is eternal and is never born.
