tat etat satyam yatha su-diptat pavakad visphulingah
sahasrashah prabhavante sa-rupah
tathaksharad vividhah saumya bhavah
prajayante tatra caivapi yanti
tat-that; etat-this; satyam-truth; yatha-as; su-diptat-effulgent; pavakat-fire; visphulingah-sparks; sahasrashah-thousands; prabhavante-are; sa-rupah-with forms; tatha-so; aksharat-from the imperishable; vividhah-various; saumya-O gentle one; bhavah-being; prajayante-are born; tatra-there; ca-also; eva-indeed; api-also; yanti-attain.
The Supreme is real and eternal. As many thousands of sparks come from a blazing fire, so many different living entities are manifested from the imperishable Supreme and then again go to Him.
divyo hy amurtah purushah
sa bahyabhyantaro hy ajah
aprano hy amanah shubhro
hy aksharat paratah parah
divyah-transcendental; hy-indeed; amurtah-without form; purushah-person; sa-He; bahyabhyantarah-within and without; hy-indeed; ajah-unborn; apranah-without breath; hy-indeed; amanah-without mind; shubhrah-glorious; hy-indeed; aksharat-than the imperishable; paratah-supreme; parah-above.
The Supreme is a person. He has no material form. He is within and without. He is unborn. He has neither material breath nor material mind. He is handsome and glorious. He is superior to the impersonal Brahman.
etasmaj jayate prano
manah sarvendriyani ca
kham vayur jyotir apah
prithivi vishvasya dharini
etasmat-from Him; jayate-is born; pranah-life; manah-mind; sarvendriyani-all senses; ca-and; kham-ether; vayuh-air; jyotih-fire; apah-water; prithivi-earth; vishvasya-of the world; dharini-the maintainer.
From Him are born life, mind, all senses, ether, air, fire, water, and earth, the resting place of the worlds.
agnir murdha cakshushi candra-suryau
dishah shrotre vag vivritash ca vedah
vayuh prano hridayam vishvam asya
padbhyam prithivi hy esha sarva-bhutantaratma
agnih-fire; murdha-head; cakshushi-eyes; candra-suryau-moon and sun; dishah-directions; shrotre-ears; vak-speech; vivritash-various; ca-and; vedah-Vedas; vayuh-air; pranah-life; hridayam-heart; vishvam-world; asya-of Him; padbhyam-by the feet; prithivi-the earth; hy-indeed; esha-He; sarva-bhutantaratma-present in everyone's heart.
Fire is His head. The sun and moon are His eyes. The directions are His ears. The Vedas are His words. Air is His breath. The world is His heart. From His feet the earth has come. He is present in the hearts of all living beings.
tasmad agnih samidho yasya suryah
somat parjanya oshadhayah prithivyam
puman retah sincati yoshitayam
bahvih prajah purushat samprasutah
tasmat-from Him; agnih-fire; samidhah-fuel; yasya-of whom; suryah-the sun; somat-from the moon; parjanya-rain; oshadhayah-plants; prithivyam-on teh earth; puman-male; retah-semen; sincati-sprinkles; yoshitayam-in the female; bahvih-many; prajah-children; purushat-from the male; samprasutah-born.
From Him comes fire. From fire comes the sun. From the sun comes the moon. From the moon comes rain. From rain come crops on the earth. Because of crops males impregnate females and many offspring are born. Thus everything is manifested from the Supreme Person.
tasmad ricah sama yajumsi diksha
yajnash ca sarve kratavo dakshinash ca
samvatsarash ca yajamanash ca lokah
somo yatra pavate yatra suryah
tasmat-from Him; ricah-the Rg Veda; sama-the Sama Veda; yajumsi-the Yajur Veda; diksha-initation; yajnah-yajna; ca-anmd; sarve-all; kratavah-kratus; dakshinash-daksina; ca-and; samvatsarash-years; ca-and; yajamanash-performers olf yajna; ca-and; lokah-worlds; somah-soma; yatra-where; pavate-shines; yatra-where; suryah-the sun.
From Him come the Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda, diksha, yajnas, kratus. dakshina, the year, the performer of yajnas, and the worlds of the moon and the sun.
tasmac ca deva bahudha samprasutah
sadhya manushyah pashavo vayamsi
pranapanau vrihi-yavau tapash ca
shraddha satyam brahmacaryam vidhish ca
tasmat-from Him; ca-and; deva-demigods; bahudha-many; samprasutah-born; sadhya-sadhyas; manushyah-human beings; pashavah-animals; vayamsi-ages; pranapanau-the incoming and outgoing breaths; vrihi-yavau-rice and barley; tapash-austerity; ca-and; shraddha-faith; satyam-trtuhfulness; brahmacaryam-celibacy; vidhish-rules; ca-and.
From Him are born the many demigods, sadhyas, human beings, animals, the ages of life, the incoming and outgoing breaths, rice, barley, austerity, faith, truthfulness, celibacy, and the rules of worship.
sapta pranah prabhavanti tasmat
saptarcishah samidhah sapta homah
sapteme loka yeshu caranti prana
guhashaya nihitah sapta sapta
sapta-seven; pranah-breaths; prabhavanti-born; tasmat-from Him; sapta-seven; arcishah-flames; samidhah-burning; sapta-seven; homah-homas; sapta-seven; ime-they; loka-worlds; yeshu-in whuch; caranti-move; prana-breaths; guhashaya-in the heart; nihitah-situated; sapta-seven; sapta-seven.
From Him come the seven life-breaths, the seven flames, the seven homas, the seven worlds, and the forty-nine life-forces hidden in the heart.
atah samudra girayash ca sarve
'smat syandante sindhavah sarva-rupah
atash ca sarva oshadhayo rasash ca
yenaisha bhutais tishthate hy antaratma
atah-from Hom; samudra-oceans; girayash-mountains; ca-and; sarve-all; asmat-from Him; syandante-flow; sindhavah-the rivers; sarva-rupah-all forms; atash-from Him; ca-and; sarva-all; oshadhayah-plants; rasah-tastes; ca-and; yena-by whom; esha-He; bhutaih-by living entities; tishthate-stays; hy-indeed; antaratma-within the heart.
From Him come all oceans, mountains, rivers, plants, and tastes. He is the Supersoul in the hearts of all living entities.
purusha evedam vishvam karma
tapo brahma paramamritam
etad yo veda nihitam guhayam
so 'vidya-granthim vikiratiha saumya
purushah-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; eva-indeed; idam-this; vishvam-universe; karma-karma; tapah-austerity; brahma-Brahman; paramamritam-supreme nectar; etat-this; yah-who; veda-knows; nihitam-hidden; guhayam-in the heart; sah-He; avidya-of ignorance; granthim-the knot; vikirati-unties; iha-here; saumya-O gentle one.
The Supreme Person is this entire universe. He is austerity and He is karma. He is the impersonal Brahman. He is full of nectar. O gentle one, one who knows that the Supreme Person stays in his heart cuts the knot of ignorance.
avih sannihitam guhacaran nama
mahat padam atraitat samarpitam
ejat pranat nimishac ca yad etat janatha sad-asad-varenyam
param vijnanat yad varishtham prajanam
avih sannihitam-manifested; guhacaran-in the heart; nama-indeed; mahat-gerat; padam-place; atra-where; etat-this; samarpitam-offered; ejat-moving; pranat-breathing; nimishat-winking; ca-and; yat-what; etat-this; janatha-please know; sad-asat-of the high and low; varenyam-the best; param-supreme; vijnanat-than knowledge; yat-what; varishtham-best; prajanam-of living entities.
The Supreme Person stays in the heart. He is the final resort for all who move, breathe, or wink. Please know that He is the best of the high and the low, better than mere knowledge, the best of all who live.
yad arcimat yad anubhyo 'nu ca
yasmil loka nihita lokinash ca
tad etad aksharam brahma sa pranas tad u van manah
tad etat satyam tad amritam tad veddhavyam somya viddhi
yat-who; arcimat-effulgent; yat-who; anubhyah-than the smallest; anu-smaller; ca-and; yasmit-in whom; lokah-the world; nihita-placed; lokinah-the living entities; ca-and; tat-that; etat-this; aksharam-imperishable; brahma-Brahman; sah-He; pranah-life; tat-that; u-indeed; vak-speech; manah-mind; tat-that; etat-this; satyam-truth; tat-that; amritam-immortal; tat-taht; veddhavyam-to be known; somya-O gentle one; viddhi-please know.
The Supreme Person is effulgent. He is smaller than the smallest. All the worlds and all living entities rest within Him. He is the imperishable Brahman effulgence. He is life, words, and mind. He is the truth. O gentle one, know that He is immortal and full of nectar.
dhanur grihitvaupanishadam mahastram
sharam hy upasa-nishitam sandadhita
ayamya tad bhava-gatena cetasa
lakshyam tad evaksharam somya viddhi
dhanuh-a bow; grihitva-taking; aupanishadam-of the Upanisads; mahastram-great weapon; sharam-arrow; hy-indeed; upasa-with worship; nishitam-sharp; sandadhita-placing; ayamya-withdrawing; tat-that; bhava-gatena-with love; cetasa-with the heart; lakshyam-to be seen; tat-that; eva-indeed; aksharam-immortal; somya-O gentle one; viddhi-please know.
O gentle one, withdraw the senses from all else, take up the bow of the Upanishads, place in it the sharp arrow of devotional service, and with a heart filled with love, aim at the immortal Supreme Person.
pranavo dhanuh sharo hy atma
brahma tal lakshyam ucyate
sharavat tan-mayo bhavet
pranavah-Om; dhanuh-bow; sharah-arrow; hy-indeed; atma-the self; brahma-Brahman; tal-that; lakshyam-to be targeted; ucyate-is said; apramattena-by the serious; veddhavyam-to be known; sharavat-like an arrow; tan-mayah-consisting of that; bhavet-should be.
Om is the bow. The self is the arrow. The Supreme Person is the target. A sober person should make himself like an arrow.
yasmin dyauh prithivi cantariksham
otam manah saha pranaish ca sarvaih
tam evaikam janatha atmanam anya
vaco vimuncatha amritasyaisha setuh
yasmin-in whom; dyauh-heaven; prithivi-earth; ca-and; antariksham-space; otam-the warp and the woof; manah-mind; saha-with; pranaish-life; ca-and; sarvaih-with all; tam-Him; eva-indeed; ekam-one; janatha-please know; atmanam-the Supersoul; anya-other; vacah-words; vimuncatha-abandon; amritasya-of immortality; esha-He; setuh-the bridge.
In Him rest the heavens, the earth, space, mind, and life. Everything is woven on Him. Know that He is the all-pervading Supersoul. Give up talking of anyone else. He is the bridge to immortality.
ara iva ratha-nabho samhate yatra nadyah
sa esho 'ntash carate bahudha jayamanah
om ity evam dhyayatha atmanam
svasti vah paraya tamasah parastat
arah-the spokes; iva-like; ratha-nabhah-the center of a wheel; samhate-culimate; yatra-where; nadyah-the artieries; sa-He; eshah-He; antah-within; carate-goes; bahudha-many; jayamanah-born; om-Om; ity-thus; evam-thus; dhyayatha-meditate; atmanam-the Supersoul; svasti-auspiciousness; vah-to you; paraya-to the Supreme; tamasah-darkness; parastat-above.
The Supersoul stays in the living entities' hearts, where the arteries converge like spokes in a wheel. Chant Om and meditate on Him as the Supersoul. Then you will attain auspiciousness. You will attain the Supreme Lord, who is beyond the darkness of matter.
yah sarva-jnah sarva-vid
yasyaisha mahima bhuvi
divye brahma-pure hy esha
vyomny atma pratishthitah
yah-who; sarva-jnah-knows all; sarva-vit-knows all; yasya-of whom; esha-this; mahima-glory; bhuvi-in the earth; divye-in heaven; brahma-pure-in the spiritual world; hy-indeed; esha-this; vyomny-in the sky; atma-the Supersoul; pratishthitah-situated.
The Supreme Person knows everything. He knows everything. His glory is manifest in this world. He is the Supreme Lord who stays in the spiritual world.
pratishthito 'nne hridayam sannidhaya
tad vijnanena paripashyanti dhira
ananda-rupam amritam yad vibhati
mano-mayah-consiting of mind; prana-sharira-neta-the leader of life and body; pratishthitah-situated; anne-in food; hridayam-the heart; sannidhaya-placing; tat-that; vijnanena-with knowledge; paripashyanti-see; dhira-wise; ananda-of bliss; rupam-form; amritam-eternal; yat-what; vibhati-is manifested.
He stays in the mind. He is the controller of life and body. He stays in food and He stays in the heart. Knowing this, the wise gaze on Him, the eternal Lord whose form is full of bliss and nectar.
kshiyante casya karmani
tasmin drishte paravare
bhidyate-pierced; hridaya-heart; granthih-knot; chidyante-cut to pieces; sarva-all; samshayah-misgivings; kshiyante-terminated; ca-and; asya-his; karmani-chain fo fruitive actions; tasmin-when; drishte-seen; paravare-above all.
The knot in the heart is pierced, and all misgivings are cut to pieces. The chain of fruitive actions is terminated when one sees the Supreme Person.*
hiranamaye pare koshe
virajam brahma nishkalam
tac chubhram jyotisam jyotis
tad yad atma-vido viduh
hiranamaye-golden; pare-supreme; koshe-center; virajam-pure; brahma-Brahman; nishkalam-pure; tac-that; chubhram-effulgent; jyotisam-of lights; jyotih-the l;ight; tat-that; yat-what; atma-vidah-they who know thew self; viduh-know.
In the spiritual realm, beyond the material covering, is the unlimited Brahman effulgence, which is free from material contamination. That effulgent white light is understood by the transcendentalists to be the light of all lights.*
na tatra suryo bhati na candra-tarakam
nema vidyuto bhanti kuto 'yam agnih
tam eva bhantam anubhati sarvam
tasya bhasa sarvam idam vibhati
na-not; tatra-there; suryah-sun; bhati-shines; na-not; candra-tarakam-moon and stars; na-not; ima-they; vidyutah-electricity; bhanti-shines; kutah-where?; ayam-this; agnih-ignited lamps; tam-that; eva-indeed; bhantam-shining; anubhati-reflected; sarvam-all; tasya-of that; bhasa-effulgence; sarvam-all; idam-this; vibhati-shines.
In that realm there is no need of sunshine, moonshine, fire, or electricity for illumination. Indeed, whatever illumination appears in the material world is only a reflection of that supreme illumination.*
brahmaivedam amritam purastad
brahma pashcad brahma dakshinatash cottarena
adhash cordhvam ca prasritam
brahmaivedam vishvam idam varishtham
brahma-the Supreme; eva-indeed; idam-this; amritam-immortal; purastat-east; brahma-the Supreme; pashcat-west; brahma-the Supreme; dakshinatah-in the south; ca-and; uttarena-the north; adhash-below; ca-and; urdhvam-above; ca-and; prasritam -manifested; brahma-the Supreme; eva-indeed; idam-this; vishvam-world; idam-this; varishtham-the best.
That Brahman is in front and in back, the north, south, east, and west, and also overhead and below. In other words, that supreme Brahman effulgence spreads throughout both the material and spiritual skies.*
