om keneshitam patati preshitam manah

cakshuh--the eye; shrotram--and the ear; kah--what; u--indeed; devah--divinity;  yunakti--engages.

Om. Impelled by what or whom does the mind pursue its desires? Yoked by whom does the first of the vital airs begin its movement? Impelled by whom do people speak what they speak? What divinity engages the senses of the eye and ear?

1.2

shrotrasya shrotram manaso mano yad

vaco ha vacam+ sa u pranasya pranah

cakshushash cakshur atimucya dhirah

 pretyasmal lokad amrita bhavanti

shrotrasya shrotram--the ear's ear; manasah manah--the mind's mind; yat--which;

vacah--of speech; ha--indeed; vacam--the speech; sah--it; u--indeed; pranasya pranah--the breath's breath; cakshushah cakshuh--the eye's eye; atimucya--becoming free; dhirah--wise persons; pretya--leaving; asmat--this; lokat--word; amritah--deathless; bhavanti--become.

It is the hearing sense's power of hearing, the mind's mental capacity, the voice's speaking power, the vital breath's breathing power, and the visual sense's sight. Knowing this, the wise free themselves from entanglement and upon leaving this world become immortal.

1.3

na tatra cakshur gacchati na vag gacchati no manah

nah--to us; tat--that; vyacacakshire--described.

The sense of sight does not reach to this, nor does speech, nor the mind. We do

not really know it, or know how to teach about it. It is other than the known

and also other than the unknown, situated beyond both. So much we have heard from previous authorities who informed us.

1.4

 yena shrotram idam+ shrutam

tad eva brahma tvam viddhi

2.1

yadi manyase su-vedeti dabhram evapi

If you think you know this Supreme well, you only little know what it is. But if

you see the need to carefully study what this Supreme's presence is among yourselves and among the gods, then I think you understand  it.

I do not say I fully understand the Supreme, nor that I understand it not at all. I do understand something about it. He among us who thinks he knows it does not at all, while he who thinks he does not know it actually does.

2.3

yasyamatam tasya matam

 matam yasya na veda sah

One who thinks he does not know it in fact knows it. One who thinks he knows it in fact does not. It is not understood by those who claim to understand it, and understood by those who claim they do not.

2.4

The Supreme is known when one has come to understand it by personal realization. Then, indeed, one can attain immortality. By diligent endeavor

one focuses his intention, and by devoted meditation one ultimately attains

the eternal Supreme.

2.5

iha ced avedid atha satyam asti

If during this life one learns to understand the Supreme, he will achieve true perfection. But if one fails in this life to understand the Supreme, his life will be a total failure. Because wise persons look for the Supreme among all its creations, when they depart from this world they become immortal.
