In a purport of the Caitanya-caritdmrta, Srila Prabhupada wrote: Srila Rupa GosvamI is described as the bhakti-rasdcarya, or one who knows the essence of devotional service. His famous book Bhakti-rasdmrta-sindhu is the science of devotional service, and by reading this book one can understand the meaning of devotional service. Another of his famous books is the Ujjvala-nilamani. In this book he elaborately explains the loving affairs and transcenŽdental activities of Lord Krsna and Radharanl. In the Bhakti-ratndkara there is a list of the books Sri Rupa GosvamI compiled. Of all his books, the following sixteen are very popular among Vaisnavas: (1) Hamsaduta, (2) Uddhava-sandesa, (3) Krsna-janma-tithi-vidhi, (4 and 5) Rddhd-krsna-ganoddesa-dlpikd, Brhat (major) and Laghu (minor), (6) Stavamdld, (7) Vidagdha-mddhava, (8) Lalita-mddhava, (9) Ddna-keli-kaumudi, (10) Bhakti-rasdmrta-sindhu (this is the most celebrated book by Sri Rupa GosvamI), (11) Ujjvala-nilamani, (12) Akhydta-candrikd, (13) Mathurd-mahimd, (14) Padydvall, (15) Ndtaka-candrikd and (16) Laghu-bhagavatdmrta.
In the Caitanya-caritamrta, Krsnadasa Kaviraja wrote: Srlla Rupa GosvamI also wrote many books, the most famous of which is the Bhakti-rasdmrta-sindhu. From that book one can understand the essence of devotional service to Krsna and the transcendental mellows one can derive from such service.Srlla Rupa GosvamI also compiled the book named Ujjvala-nilamani, from which one can understand, to the fullest limits, the loving affairs of Sri Sri Radha and Krsna. We should very carefully understand the exalted position of this book and also appreciate the qualifications that are required for hearing it. In this regard, the following conversation between Srlla Prabhupada and an university professor:
Professor: Have you translated also the Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu
Prabhupada: Oh yes. Professor: All of it...? Or...
Prabhupada: Yes, all of it. Nectar of Devotion.
Paramahamsa: Do you have, Nectar of Devotion?
Professor: And also this Ujjvala-nilamani.
Prabhupada: Ujjvala-nilamani. No, Ujjvala-nilamani is not for
Professor: No, it's...
