Although Cupid showers Radhika with his arrows, She cov¬ers Her breasts with a lotus leaf. This is not to protect Herself from Cupid;s torture, but to shelter Your presence within Her heart.

Sitting alone, Radhika uses deer musk to draw a picture of You depicted like Cupid riding a makara* fish. Then with rev¬erence She bows to the portrait's lotus feet holding a palmful of mango buds**.

Radhika repeatedly offers pranama, falling to the ground exclaiming: Hey Madhava! I take shelter at Your lotus feet; if You neglect Me, the moon's rays will surely burn My body to a crisp!

(Hey Madhava! In suffering Your separation, meek and fearful Radhika thinks only of You; so please come and save Her from Cupid's onslaught.)

Knowing Your darsana to be very rare, Radhika meditates on Your picture and laments....Then seeing You, She laughs in joy... But losing sight of You, She cries. Then after intense prayer, Your vision returns., and while imagining Your embrace, She relieves Her distress.(Hey Madhava! In suffering Your separation, meek and fearful Radhika thinks only of You; so please come and save Her from Cupid's onslaught.)

(9)

srijayadeva bhanitamidamadhikam jadi manasa nataniyam

hari virahakula vallaba juvati sakhi vacanam pathaniyam

Hey bhaktas! Let your heart dance along with Jayadeva's description of a sakhi conveying Radha's viraha sadness to Krsna.

(10)

avaso vipinayate priya sakhi malapi jalayate

tapohapi svasitena dava dahana jvala kalapayate

The Sakhi continues :

Hey Krsna! In Your separation, Radha's home appears like the forest, Her priya sakhis appear like a noose around the neck, and Her deep breathing sets Her heart ablaze! Thus She flees like a frightened deer from the hunter, Cupid.
