Sananda Govinda

(Blissful Govinda)

(1)

suciramanunayena prinayitva mrgakhim

gatavati krtavese kessave kunjasajyam

racita rucira bhusam drstimose pradose

sphurati nira vasadam kapi radham jagada

As the sky becomes dark turning into night, Krsna succeeds in dismantling doe-eyed Radha's mana*. Seeing Her happy again, krsna beautifully attires Himself, and goes to lie upon the flower bed which She prepared. Meanwhile, Radha also begins to attractively dress, as her sakhi offers the following advice:

(2)

viracit cam vacana racanam carane ract aprariipatam

samprati manjula vajulasmani keli sayanam anuyatam

mugdhe madhu mathanamanugatamanusara radhike

Hey shy Radhike! Krsna fell at Your feet and spoke all sorts of select words to please You. He has left for the enchanting betasa kunja and is waiting for You upon the keli sajjya **. So just follow after Madhusudana who has taken Your shelter.

(3)

ghana jaghana stana bhara bhare dara

manthara carana viharam

mukharita mani manjiramupaihi vidhehi maralanikaram

mugdhe madhu mathanamanugatamanusara radhike

Carrying the heavy weight of Your huge breasts and large, beautiful bottom, You can slowly proceed ahead. Your tinkling ankle bells will sound sweeter than the calling swans. (Chorus : Ayi shy Radhe! Just follow after Madhusudana who has taken Your shelter.)

(4)

smu ramaniyataram tatunijana mohana madhuripu ranam

kusuma sarasana sasan vandinipika nikare bhaja bhavam

mugdhe madhu mathanamanugatamanusara radhike

Listen to Madhuripu's sweet words which are trauni-mana-mohana (enchanting to all of the pretty, young girls)... and fol¬low the royal order of Cupid's reciters, the maudlin kokilas. This will enhance Your love for Krsna. (Ayi shy Radhe! Just follow after Madhusudana who has taken Your shelter.)

(5)

anila tarala kisalaya mikarena karena lata nikuramvam

preranamiva karabhoru karoti gatim prati munca

vilambam

mugdhe madhu mathanamanugatamanusara radhike

Ayi Rai! The lovely latas tossing in the wind are like hands inviting You to go to Krsna. So don't delay. (Ayi shy Radhe! Just follow after Madhusudana who has taken Your shelter.)

(6)

sphuritam ananga taranga vasadiva sucita hari parirambham

prccha manohara hara vimala

jaiadharamamum kucakumbham

mugdhe madhu mathanamanugatamanusara radhike

Radhe (..You don't believe me?) Then just ask Your beau¬tiful, jug-like breasts which are topped by a stream-like pearl necklace...aren't they palpitating within the waves of Cupid's ocean simply for the chance to receive Krsna's fondling em¬brace? ( Ayi shy Radhe! Just follow after madhusudana who has taken Your shelter.)

(7)

adhigatamakhila sakhl bhiridam tava vapurapi rati rana sajjam

candi ranlta rasana rava dimdimamabhisara sarasama lajjam

mugdhe madhu mathanamanugatamanusara radhike

Radhe! Your sakhis have fessed Your beautiful limbs ravishingly to befit Cupid's love tournament.. So armed with Your bottom's bell-chain that resounds like Siva's dim dim drum, gallantly enter Krsna's rati mandira. (Ayi shy Radhe! Just follow after Madhusudana who has taken Your shelter.)

(8)

smara sara subhaga nakhena karena

sakhlmabalambya salilam

cala balaya kkanitairavabodhaya harimapi nijagati silam

mugdhe madhu mathanamanugatamanusara radhike

Resting Your hand upon a sakhl's shoulder with its en¬chanting fingernails that resemble Cupid's five flower arrows, Your bracelets and bangles will tinkle rati's message unto madhava who eagerly awaits Your arrival. ( Ayi shy Radhe! Just follow after Madhusudana who has taken Your shelter.)

(9)

srijayadeva bhanitamadharikrta haramudasitaramam

hari vinihita mansamadhitisthatu knathatatimaviramam

This song of Jayadeva's is more precious than a gem neck¬lace, and more attractive than a mind-stealing ramani. Let it always rest in the hearts of those surrendered unto Krsna.

(10)

sa mam draksyati bkasyati smarakatham

pratyangam alinganaih

pritim yasyati ramsyate sakhl smagyaeti samcintayan

sa tvam payati vepate pulakayatyanandati svidyati

pratyudgacchati muracchati sthiratamah punje nikunje priyah

Sakhl Rai! Your Priya ramana sits waiting in the nikunja thinking : "Aha! My RadharanI will come and speak sweet words to me, She will embrace and rub Her body against mine feeling great bliss, then she will make love with Me.".Thus imagining your arrival , He trembles, horripulates, perspires and after running to meet You, embraces the darkness and faints!

(11)

aksnor niksipadanjanam sravanayostapiccha guchavalim

murniddha syama saroja dama kucayoh kasturika patrakam

'dhurttanamabhisara satvara hrdam visvam nikunje sakhl

dhvantam nila nicla cam sudrsam pratyangamalingati

Sakhl Radhe! Many beautiful gopis have already left to meet Krsna. They have decorated their eyes with Kajjal, placed tamala leaves over their ears, put garlands of blue lotus around their necks, and painted designs over their breasts using kasturi. Hidden by the veil of darkness, that debouch, Krsna, takes on many forms to firmly embrace them all! (So don't delay).

(12)

kasmira gaura vapusamabhisarikana

mabddha rekhamabhito ruci manjaribhih

etat tamaladala nila tamam tamisram

tatprema hema nikasopaltam tanoti

As they eagerly proceed to meet Krsna, the golden light waves from the flower-soft gopa kisoris body' mark the dense tamala leaf like darkness. Aho! It looks like countless golden inscription marking a black stone slab.

(13)

haravali tarala kanchana kanchi dama

manjira kankana mani dyuti dipitasya

dvare nikunja milayasya harim viliokya

vridavatim atha sakhim iyam ityuvaca

As She arrives at the forest cottage, Radharani's effulgent necklace, bracelets, waist-bells and ankle-bells light up the darkness. Standing at the doorway, She peeks inside, sees Krsna, and shyly lowers Her head. Thus her sakhl begins to address Her :

(20)

madhutara pika nikara ninada mukhare

pravisa radhe madhava samipamiha

vilasa dasana ruci rucira sikhare

O Rai! (While chewing Pan) Your lovely teeth will look like sikhara gems (the color of pomegranate seeds). Now you can approach Madhava in the keli Mandira surrounded by melodious cooing kokilas and be¬gin lovemaking.

(21)

vihita padmavati sukha samaje

kuru murare mangala satani

bhanati jayadeva kaviraja raje

Hey Murari! Kaviraja Jayadeva has composed this song for Padmavati's* pleasure. Let it bestow auspiciousness to the world in hundreds of ways.

(22)

tvam citte caram vahannayamati sranto bhrasam tapitah

kandarpena ca patumicchati sudha samvadha vimvadharam

asyankam tadalankuru ksanamiha bhruksepa laksmilava

krite dasa itopsevait apadambhoje kutah sambhramah

O Rai! For a long time Krsna has carried You within His mind; But now He is exhausted. Thus burning with passion, He longs to soothingly sip the nectar from Your bimba red lips. So hey Vinodini* ! Why not place Yourself in His lap? For haven't You noticed : Your flirting eye gestures have toppled Him into becoming Your subservient dasa. So why hesitate?

(23)

sa sasadhavaka sanandam goinde lola locana

sinjana manju manjiram pravivesa nivesanam

Thus following Her sakhl's advice, Rai kisori looks at Govinda with restless, love-thirsty eyes, and enters the keli mandira followed by the sweet tinkling sound of Her ankle bells. Her mind now reels in both fear and ecstasy.
