Shri Bakreshwar Pandit;

Shri Bakreshwar Pandit was present with Shriman Mahaprabhu during His pastimes in Nabadwip and after His acceptance of sannyas he also accompanied Him to Jagannath Puri. During the time of the Lord's residence in Puri he continued to live with Him there as well.

Shri Bakreshwar Pandit took birth in the village of Guptipara, near Triveni. He was an especially proficient dancer and kirtaniya and could dance continuously for 72 hours. When Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu began His pastimes in Nabadwip of congregational chanting of the Holy Names of Shri Hari, Shri Bakreshwar Pandit was an important singer and dancer in that assembly. It was by his mercy that Debananda Pandit was delivered from the wrath of Mahaprabhu. He was also present during the Lord's journey to Ramakeli.

One evening Bakreshwar Pandit came to perform dancing and chanting of the Holy Names at the house of one devotee from Kulia, across the bank of the Ganga from Nadiya. Receiving this auspicious news Debananda proceeded there. When he saw the appearance of the symptoms of divine love in the person of Shri Bakreshwar Pandit he became charmed.

Gradually a great crowd gathered at that place and Debananda Pandit, took a cane in his hand to keep the crowd in order, so as not to obstruct the ecstatic dancing of Shri Bakreshwar Pandit. In this way, Bakreshwar Pandit performed chanting and dancing for two praharas (six hours), late into the night.

When he finished dancing and sat down, Debananda came and offered dandabats at the lotus feet of Shri Bakreshwar Pandit, who became pleased with this service and blessed Debananda with the words, "Krishna bhakti hauk" / "May you attain devotion to Lord Shri Krishna."

From that day devotion was awakened in the heart of Debananda by the mercy of Bakreshwar Pandit. Thereafter, when Mahaprabhu came to Nadiya to have darshan of His Mother and Mother Ganges, he bestowed His mercy on Debananda at Kulia. "Because you have served Bakreshwar I have noticed you. Bakreshwar is fully imbued with the Lord's transcendental energy, and whoever becomes devoted to him, attains to the lotus feet of Shri Krishna. His heart is the personal abode of Shri Krishna and as Shri Krishna dances, so Bakreshwar also dances. Wherever one can get the association of Bakreshwar, that place is the sum total of all Holy places and is as good as Shri Baikuntha.

"Bakreshwar Pandit's disciple was Gopal Guru Goswami and Gopal Guru Goswami's disciple was Shri Dhyancandra Goswami. In his Dhyan Candra Paddhati, Dhyan Candra Goswami has written, "That person who was previously very expert in the arts of singing and dancing, the gopi Tungabidda, is presently renowned in the world as Bakreshwar Pandit.

In the opinion of Kabikarnapur Gosvami (Gaur ganoddesh dipika), "Who was previously a member of the Caturbyuha, Shri Aniruddha, has now become Bakreshwar Pandit. Sasirekha was also present in Bakreshwar Pandit."

Totally mad with ecstatic love, he would dance in such a way as to please the Lord Gaursundor very much. Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu personally sang while Bakreshwar Pandit danced and thus Bakreshwar Pandit fell at the lotus feet of the Lord and spoke as follows, "Oh Most Merciful One! Oh Candramukha! Oh Moon-faced One! Please give me ten thousand Gandharbas. Let them sing as I dance and then I will be greatly happy."

Lord Chaitanya replied, "I have only one wing like you but if I had another I would fly in the sky!"

He has appeared on the fifth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Asar and he closed his pastimes in this world on the sixth day of the bright fortnight of the month Asar.

Bakreshwar Pandit's worshipful Deities, Shri Shri RadhaKanta, Whom he worshipped in Kasi Misra's house, (also the residence of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu {Gambhira}), are still being worshipped there to this day.
